- At the height of the Cold War, the Soviet Army built a massive top secret military base in the forests outside Berlin. The base housed their tank division and served as a launch and storage site for nuclear arms. At its peak it was home to 15,000 soldiers and their families. This meant that a self contained town had to be purpose-built: complete with schools, gyms, stores, restaurants, movie theater, etc. Today, much of it has been lost or demolished but there are still some remnants of this clandestine military town. Vogelsang Kaserne.
Really cool! I've been here three times. Sadly they are tearing it down now. It was a great place and I had wonderful days looking around there!
Three times, nice!👌 Yes, unfortunately it seems its days are numbered...

Fun fact: a little boy and a girl on that original wall art represent Soviet children in their school uniforms. The red star was given to the children of their first school years, who were forming so called Little Octobrist (Russian Октябрята = Oktyabryata) groups. In these groups children were prepared to join the Young Pioneers groups later on around the 3rd grade.
Wow, interesting!🙌😮
@@onlineorphanage Yeah, it's pretty interesting how the communism movement was already integrated at such a young age.
