My mini-PC is a Dell 5050 micro, that has a i7-7700 CPU and 32gb of RAM, and the Dolphin emulator for GameCube takes advantage of the strong CPU and video memory adjustment I made in the BIOS. Quick tip for non techy users who are afraid of going into BIOS to change boot order: as soon as the pc/laptop is turned ON, press F12 to get into the "quick boot" menu. The quick boot menu is simpler as all it shows are the devices that can be choose to boot the pc/laptop. From here they just need to pick the name of their drive by brand. Worst case they choose their windows boot or something else and they can restart and try again. I work with computers and F12 has proven to be a "universal" key for quick boot menu for different models of DELL, Lenovo, HTP, etc. It may be not for ALL models but is "almost" guarantee and easier to execute 😊

Recommend Emulation Station (ES-DE) with a standalone HDD, and set it up with RetroArch along with other standalone emulators. I wanted to use SSD however for the large amount of retro ROMs it works better with a 3-5 TB HDD. Also the slower speed of a HDD is not a problem with older console systems. Save the SSD to use with newer PC games. No need to boot into a separate environment as ES-DE works well.

You probably wouldn't want to do batocera like in this vid if you also want modern pc games. Afaik Batocera doesn't support them since it's emulation focused, and more importantly while linux gaming is amazing compared to years ago it's still not to the standard of windows in terms of compatibility unfortunately. Instead you'd maybe want to look into just installing all the games on a portable drive and then using something like playnite or launchbox as a front end that way if you cared about that. I don't know how well Steam plays with removable storage but it should be a solvable issue.

Do you think an external HDD that's USB 3.0 is good for this, external SSD's are still pretty expensive in Germany? There's 4TB external HDD 3.0 for ~$100 and 8TB for ~$160 (Some off name brands as low as $120). I'm sure the transfer speed would be one of the most important things to look at. I already have a PC that boots into Windows and use Launch Bow/Big Box on it, but I'd like to get a small mini PC to use on the t.v. for everyone to be able to play. I already have a WD Elements 5TB, USB 3.0 external HDD, so could I just follow your steps here for the drive and get a mini PC for it that would be dedicated just for retro gaming and boot into that drive every time? Thanks for any help/advice, love the videos but gives so much more to think about instead of just plug and play.

I also use retrobat as I find it easier. Turns out, there isn't that much difference between the 2 as they both use emulation station as the backend...several reviews have tested both and some games run better on one than the other but that has more to do with the optimization of the emulators on windows or Linux...
I say retrobat is better due to the windows integration since you can find a game and be up and running within a few clicks as opposed to transferring files back and forth with batocera on a separate drive....
however, the best overall frontend from what I've seen and read is Launchbox/Bigbox...it has just about every feature you could want for a small 1 time fee. Although they do have a free version.

Ordered the same equipment as reviewed here, followed the instructional video that RGG has created (top notch btw). Ran into an issue and have been stuck for a couple days trying to find a work around. I'm at the part where my laptop boots up with the Fikwot Solid State Drive, it looks just like the video with the latest Batocera version 38 launching, after the Batocera Linux splash screen (the 17:25 mark of this instructional video) my screen goes black. This of course is where the next step, Pressing F1 to gain access to Linux file system is suppose to occur. So I'm unable to transfer the Bios and Rom files from the usb flash drive. I did some digging around, Reddit, Batocera Forums etc, but haven't been able to find a workaround. I even took a USB Keyboard and attached it to my laptop, my laptop recognized the new keyboard but still no help. I also tried various different bios settings with the laptop changing keyboard settings. Function key combinations didn't work for me as well. Anyone have this happen during installation? I've thought of rolling back the version of Batocera as my next attempt.

If its an old 32bit PC you will have to download the older version that on the site.
      V5.25 I think it is.
If its an older PC but is 64bit then latest version may still work, you can only test and see.
If you end up using 5.25 then older iit wont have as many systems supported, less settings as I think it uses older versions of emulators.
As for usb2. I read on the official forum there should be no difference for actual game performance whether you are using usb2,usb3,hdd or an ssd.
For most systems anyway, perhaps the very high tier of emulation like ps3 then usb3 may be beneficial
But if you are using an old PC you wouldnt be able to run ps3 anyway.
An advantage of usb 3 and higher is your system may boot a little quicker and disc based games may load a little quicker.
However if you are also transferring files over via its usb port file transfer are very slow over usb2,so a pain when moving lots of files or larger disc based roms.

Love everything but the garbage SSD suggestion! That's $50 down the drain!

Batocera with a pc which I'd recommend over a pi unless you already have a pi.

@RetroGamingGuy I have an extra PC. I can download batocera and it will be better than pi? I can understand bc of ram and space, but I think it would be loud in the 1up cabinet

Depends on the pc you have but majority of the time yes you'll have much higher level of performance than a pi 4. You could get a $150 mini pc and it would be light years better than a pi 4. You could go that route if your pc is too big loud or performance isn't great.

@@RetroGamingGuy on Amazon now, do you have a mini PC you recommend?? I've watched countless hours of mini PC videos. What do YOU recommend?
