When you have nothing to lose, that's when you are truly free.
The villain becomes a hero because he frees others from what keeps them still in the face of so many problems, fear; fear of the consequences of directly challenging the system.
The joker becomes the archetype for others because he loses the fear of what might happen to him for directly challenging the system. It is the straw that breaks the camel's back, the murder of a rich man by a "throwaway" from society/system on television.
The subsequent revolution is then driven by that example, but it is the consequence of the consequence, in that it is the result of individual realization of how screwed we all are and indeed, how screwed the system/society is. Violence is a result of a subconscious desire for self-destruction also by the loss of one's own physical boundaries to what surrounds us in pursuit of that change of the maintained order (it is cause/effect, if you do something good, you expect something good, if you do something bad, you expect something bad).
Then individuals are destroyed, the system is destroyed and in a general framework, order is lost and chaos appears. Chaos or anarchy would then be the true freedom of individuals, the starting point for real change.
That smile painted with blood is extremely symbolic. It alludes to the fact that happiness in today's life is synonymous with madness, because in the face of so many problems that afflict the world, we should be extremely concerned and desperately trying to generate a change even with our own lives, it is madness because we are far removed from that problematic reality in our bubbles of comforts and privileges ( movie made in the "first world" for the "first world" mainly ). We live in an extremely unequal and cruel society, in a utilitarian society, but also extremely indifferent to all its problems.
The joker would not have been a murderer if he had not been discarded by others, but would have been discriminated and mistreated throughout his life by others/society/system; There are physical irreversible facts (like a physical murder) but there are also metaphysical ones (like a mental and psychological murder). In that order of ideas, the joker is not the only murderer, the others are also murderers, not only those who directly generate the mistreatment, but also those who do nothing about it; those who are indifferent to the problem allow it to continue occurring.
The system based on selfishness and indifference to the problems of others is smeared with blood... that smile is painted with blood, because that smile kills, indifference kills
