Cost: $15 and up, depending on the drop cloth
Skill Level: Beginner
Shopping List:
Tarp [amzn.to/2qfJmnq]
Canvas drop cloth [amzn.to/2XpUxpu]
Canvas backed plastic drop cloth [amzn.to/2NWH4T8]
Thick plastic drop cloth [amzn.to/2XqfWPg]
Thin plastic drop cloth [amzn.to/2CWLd37]
Paper drop cloth [amzn.to/2CTboYe]
Steps:
1. Professional painters avoid standard canvas drop cloths, as they’re not great at preventing paint spills from absorbing and staining the floor. Instead, they prefer canvas backed, plastic lined drop cloths.
2. Thick plastic drop cloths should be used outdoors, particularly for covering plants, shrubs, etc. Mauro recommends not using them on the ground or on the floor because they can get slippery.
3. Thin plastic drop cloths are used for protecting furniture and other materials that can’t be removed from the room being worked in. They should not be used on the floor because they can tear easily and because they also can get slippery.
4. Tarps are good for exterior projects, particularly scraping paint off the sides of a house. They shouldn’t be used when it’s time to start painting.
5. Paper drop cloths are great for trim and edge work. Mauro likes to cut 4-5 inch sections of paper, tape it along the bottom edge of the baseboard, and then lay his canvas drop cloth on top of that to work.

All the drop cloths Mauro mentioned he uses, including the canvas, plastic, and tarps, can all be found at home centers and painting supply stores

Good basic educational video. Nwxt time I'm painting wall board trim will use the paper product as mentioned.

It also depends if you're painting for a living, or you're a homeowner just painting a room. Most homeowners would probably buy the cheapest thing.
Is buying the cheapest the best thing as new homeowner tho? He makes a good point about the potential of making an accident.
It’s still not safe actually
Used grey tarps for collecting shake off a re roof. they are stronger than a blue tarp.

He should really teach y'all how to use that masking film. Amazing product, really speeds up the painting process.

It’s too bad that someone didn’t have this discussion with the homeowner on a job that I did this past week. The homeowner painted the walls and I painted the trim and doors. Hopefully, when she gets the carpet shampooed, the paint spots are removed. Unfortunately, someone will have to scrape off the paint off of the bathroom and hardwood floors. She mainly used old sheets as drop cloth.

I've been using the blue drop cloths that have the plastic on the other side for years now and love them. Pretty similar to the canvas ones that have the plastic on the opposite side for leak proof, just a little cheaper money wise. I did buy 3 of the canvas ones with plastic on the other side for a large deck staining outside job because they don't blow away as easy as the blue cloth ones. Paid more but they are a little better quality. Love them so far.

@@flat-earther I think I like the Butyl 11 drop cloths better. Heavy duty plus they have the protective membrane on the reverse side.
I just use my ex wife’s clothes as a drop cloth.

@@flat-earther i’m actually an astronaut and have seen the earth from space. It is indeed flat.

Anybody else curious how Roger cook is doing ?
My guess is its just his time.i just wish they'd let us know what's up though.
Interesting how so many people think they have a personal relation with Roger. It was a TV presenter not your personal friend. Go find your own friends.

all you need is canvas dust sheets what will last you a long time and can be washed in the washing machine as a decorator all ive used you dont need all these other stuff plastic sheets etc absolute waste of money and only good for one job cutting into your profits if you want to plastic use tarpaulin that will last if every decorator used one use plastic sheets and every tradesperson just imagine the landfill

This once interesting show is running on fumes these days. What person that even once picked up a paint brush would need help buying a canvas tarp ?
Uh me. Why would I buy an expensive canvas tarp over a cheap plastic one? Now I know the pros and cons of each.
Dumb comment. A 2 minute clip running through what covering product to use where and in what application does not mean the show is going down hill kn the slightest.
@@Luckingsworth Agree to disagree.
@@jgood005 Agreed, and I bet the vast majority of people who "even once picked up a paint brush" don't know these pros and cons. Painting is the most common DIY project--if you polled all those DIY painters on the pros and cons, the vast majority would have no clue.

OK, TOH. How to choose a drop cloth? I think you're reaching a bit here in the originality department. How about some new projects for ATOH instead of "new" videos that are just reused clips or some new Build It's with Tommy? There's plenty of stuff you haven't explored yet that would be way more interesting than which type of sheet to put on the floor.
Jake Schroeder slim pickings
