  • We had held out for over a month in the hope one of our favourite pods - the 27s pod would turn up and we're so glad we did! The conditions leading up to our encounter were horrendous, the famous Scottish Haar made it near impossible spotting conditions but thankfully the sun came out on the day of our encounter!
We were searching the Caithness coastline for orca when we saw that orca had been sighted around 40 miles away along the north coast, so we jumped into the van and headed up, trying to get ahead of the Orca. After a couple of hours waiting for them on the headland we were rewarded seeing 5 HUGE black fins heading right for us - it was the 27s! At the time of this recording the pod was still split - this pod including bull 34 going around as a pod of 5 and the other 3 including bull 72 are currently going around together also (upcoming video!).
The last time we saw the 27s was as a full pod of 8 last October and we were so happy to finally be reunited with them!

Just spend as much time as you can looking out to see. They can and do turn up anywhere, look at maps and look for headlands that may stick out and look good to watch out from 😊 It all involves a lot of luck of them being in the area at the right time. Good luck! 💙

I know you do your whale watching from he coast but isn't there a way to hire a boat or get someone to take you out ,or is that not for you?,just going on what happens on the American/Canadian coast ,there seems to be loads that take people out on their boats ,I know there's a difference weather wise and in the sea but I would have thought maybe more Scottish boat owners in the north would take this opportunity to offer a service during summer months

Unfortunately a lot of the boats around Scotland don't behave as they should around cetaceans, wether that's tour companies or fishermen from our experiences watching them around orca. We just prefer watching them from land with the least amount of disturbance possible, the only time we really go on a boat is if it's a ferry crossing which is usually on a set route 💙

@@findingfinsukyeah I don't think as a country we are making the most of his ing these amazing creatures in our waters, the boat owners are missing out on money if they really had their wits about them but that's on them ,I grew up near the sea in the south west of Scotland so kinda appreciate what the sea has to offer us but yeah it's their loss ,btw I gotta admit your enthusiasm for these amazing creatures is infectious ,keep up the good work
