    Never relate AFL to rugby

      This.
      @thecommodity
One played on a rectangular oval - rugby leave and rugby union (similar to a soccer field).
Other played on an oval playing field - Australian rules football.
In simple terms, both rugby codes are more of a passing game, where the aim is to stop the other side making ground up the field, where you look to score in your end zone by placing the ball over the line. Both teams move up and down the field in a line, passing the ball side to side of the pitch.
Australian Rules Football is a combo of kicking and passing the ball, & more of a game of 'keepings off' (keep the other team from getting possession) while you progress to a position up the field where you can score by kicking the ball between the posts. It's also played all over the oval.

There's a better one floating around by someone with a British-like accent. Deadly serious, these hits are the tame ones! Aussie Rules was developed in the 1850s. It's technically the oldest codified football game in the world. The Grand Final (super bowl equivalent) is played each year at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of a crowd pushing 100k. Thanks for taking an interest in the sport. AFL is actually more like NHL. Lots of turnovers, big hits and continuous play. It's just played on a massive field and not a tiny ice rink and there aren't really annoying offside rules and there is a lot more scoring. And unlike American sports, its an endurance sport as much as it is about strength, agility and skill. Players usually run between 8-10miles (12-16kms) a game. 18 players per side on the field with only 4 on the bench, unlike basketball with 5 on the field and 9 on bench or NFL with 11 on field and around 40 on the bench.

Gentlemen, Australian football is unique to this country as a big professional sport. We also have national professional Rugby League, Rugby Union, Soccer and Basketball competitions. We also play American football, Baseball, Ice Hockey and also Lacrosse. These four are considered minor sports but have decent players . We did win a silver medal at an Olympics back in the 90s for baseball. We also compete in the Lacrosse world championships. The final is generally fought out between the US and Canada but one year we upset the status quo by beating Canada in a semi but couldn't beat the USA in the final. Also, Australian football is pretty popular in the US . Its governing body is USAFL. There are currently 50 teams across the whole country and you actually have 4 clubs in Texas. They are- Austin Crows, Dallas Dingoes, Houston Lonestars and North Texas Devils based in Plano. Check it out, fellas. You also have national rugby league and rugby union competitions in the USA. Of course, there is very little media or television support for these sports in the US, you have to be in the know, and plenty of people are.

Nice reaction video fellas. No Australian would consider your opinions/preconceptions "dumb". This is a sport that really only exists to any great extent in Australia. It is definitely not some Australian version of rugby, soccer or American football. It is actually one of the oldest codes of football in the world. It was invented in Melbourne in 1858 as a way to keep cricketers fit in winter and was codified in 1859. It is the biggest sport in Australia and has the fourth highest attendance of any domestic sport competition in the world. There is definitely no throwing. You have to either kick or handball the ball. The latter means holding the ball in one hand and striking it with the other fist. Here is a good video that explains the game: ruclips.net/video/XMZYZcoAcU0/видео.html.
A couple of explanations for this video: The quarters are 20 mins + time on for when the play has stopped, which is around 10 mins per quarter (the video just says "10 mins"); the scores they show are goals (multiply by 6) + behinds (1 point each) = total; the Grand Final attendance is usually 100,000, not 90,000.
You mentioned that there are not many black players. Actually, Aborigines (native Australians) are overrepresented - 3% of the population but 11% of players. The playing surface is grass. Scoring a gaol occurs by kicking the ball between the middle posts and gains 6 points. Kicking between the goal and point post is a behind and is worth 1 point. Yes, you have to bounce the ball every 15 m (16 yd) when you are running. This is to give the opposition a chance to catch the player with the ball. Otherwise, players would just run the length of the playing field. You can only tackle the player with the ball and the tackle must be between the shoulders and knees. Contact to the head is definitely not allowed and can result in suspension of the offending player for a few weeks if it is deliberate or careless, especially if the player affected is injured by the contact. My favourite player: Cyril Rioli: ruclips.net/video/jD1Fygq9OcU/видео.html. The times he walks up on a stage in the middle of there ground is when he is receiving each of his four premiership medals (think Super Bowl ring) and once when he received the Norm Smith medal, which is for the best player in the Grand Final (the game for the premiership).

Why not they barely even got into the video and are saying if someone saw it for the first time they would think it’s rugby passing scoring defending are generally the way most sports are played any person that sees a sport for the first should look out for that and the manner in wich said players are playing compared to other familia sports not just assume and expect everything is the same as what you know that’s the height of arrogance just looking at the players play and comparing those 3 things I said is more than enough to see familiarity or difference to what you’ve seen before

Fields are huge, average 3acres and an oval shape. 18 players per team on the field with 4 on the interchange bench. Object move the ball towards your goal line & defends against you opponents goal line. Move the ball 3 ways, 1 run with the ball but must bounce the ball every 15meters (16yards) and cannot be tackled with the ball. Caught with the ball without legally disposing of the ball and opposition relieves a free kick. 2 hand ball, must hit/punch ball with a clenched fist from an open palm holding the ball. Cannot throw the ball or drop the ball. 3, Kick the ball, kicking the ball to a team member further than 15meters who catches the ball on the full & without it being touched is called a mark. Played gets a free kick from the spot of can play on. Tackling, can be tackled from any direction. But tackling must be between the shoulders and the knees, and mustn’t impart forward momentum into the opponents back. Head high contact is a penalty, sliding in below the knees is a penalty.
To score ball must be kicked and not touched between 2 larger central posts = 6 points. If ball is touched & goes through or hits the post = 1 point. Also if goes through between large and shorter outer post = 1 point. So score could be 1 4 10 (1goal=6points + 4behinds=4points = 10total points).
Has been played for over 150yrs, mostly in the southern states. Now a national competition with the 4th highest attendance of any sports league in the world.
16 teams play 22 regular season games, top 8 teams make finals (play offs), then top 2 teams play Grand Final (super bowl) normally at the MCG in Melbourne (due to Covid was moved last year) and normally with a crowd of 90,000+ in attendance.

There has been a relatively recent few rule changes regarding concussion. They introduce a specific "medical emergency" replacement player JUST to cater for concussion events. If a player takes any sort of significant head hit, they are obligated to undertake a 20 minute concussion test. If they fail, they are removed from the game and MUST miss the following 12 days, and the medical emergency is put into the game. The game isnt usually stopped for this, it all happens "live"

Codified in 1859, was started tp keep cricketers fit in the off season. Crashes happen because everyone is focused on the ball. Tackle betweem knees amd shoulders. If you wrap up a players arms while they have the ball and they cant get rid of it, you are done for holding on to the ball. If you dont punch it while passing penalty for throwing the ball. If you catch the ball on the full from a kick you can get a free kick (to be done in 10 seconds) unless umpire blows whistle for "play on" that's the basics from your queries anywho. Well fellas you’ve just found the greatest game in the world. Seriously once you learn the rules, you will be hooked. You only see one aspect of the game here.
Best to watch What is AFL released by the AFL. It explains the main rules but there’s about another 20% you need to know to fully appreciate the sport.
The field is huge. Much bigger than NFL. Varies but roughly 180 yards by 150 yards.
Players must bounce the ball every 16 yards. All players can kick and handball with both feet and hands. There are forwards, defenders and on ballers but every player to be able to do both (attack and defend). It’s the most strenuous sport of all. Players run for 10 miles plus a game. It’s hard aerobic and you can see here anaerobic (strength) sport.
The circular ring is 55 yards from goal.
Concussions do occur in most round but hit high contacts are now highly scrutinised. Players can be suspended for at least 2 weeks for negligent hits. Intent matters. Sometimes it’s just bad luck.
A medical substitute has been introduced this year. A 23rd player that can replace an injured player. Concussed players can’t play for 12 days now.
    Best players,check out Lance Franklin,Dusty Martin,Gary Ablett Junior,Nic Natanui.
Best of Eddie Betts and best of Cyril Rioli will really show the skill level these guys have. Amazing goals.
    The best 50 goals
    The 50 marks (catches).
Once you watch these clips, you’ll understand why so many Aussies are hooked.
4th highest average attendance in the world with an average of 36000. Some games attract 80 to 90000. The Grand Final (Super Bowl) attracts 100000 on the last Saturday in September. Round 15 of 22 in the minor round has just been completed.
Watch the rules clip first though then you’ll get a better idea.

scoring in AFL is easy, you get 6 points if you get it between the 2 centre poles by foot, if you the ball is touched by anything other then a foot or the ground when going through (eg knee and above, fist, opposition players hand, touching the goal post) it is not a goal and only worth 1 point.
if you miss and get it between the little post and big post its a point, if it hits the little post it counts as going out of bounds, resulting in a turn over if it does this on the full, or a throw in if it does this after bouncing.
moving the ball is done by either kicking it, punching. it(hand ball), or running (but must be bounced every 15 meters/15 steps).
Marking is a way to keep possession, a mark is a catch that is resulted in a kick of greater then 15 meters, doing so gives you a free kick from the spot of the catch and 10 seconds of game time to do so, unless your inside the forward 50circle where they give you 30 seconds.

Ok so, these are my points as I'm watching: With the four poles, its because of a kinds two-part scoring system of goals and behinds (a goal is 6 points, a behind is 1). You get a goal if you kick the ball through the taller (middle) poles and you get a behind if you kick the ball through the gap between the taller and shorter (outer) poles or if the ball goes in between the taller poles but it hits them on the way in (if you hit the poles on what would be a behind its no point). The people behind the posts do like a pointing thing to say if its goal or behind (one arm in behind, two is goal). Also its actually played in a cricket stadium, hence the field being the same). The refs are the ones in the neon. If someone kicks the ball and someone else catches in the full, it's a mark and people can't tackle them (one team can kick the ball and the other team catch it and that still applies).

To answer some of your questions
    1) definitely a very different sport to rugby. Aussie Rules has been around since 1858, the oldest club is Melbourne Football Club formed in 1858 as a subsidiary of the Melbourne Cricket Club.
    2) yes, they have to bounce the ball every 15 metres. No, they’re not throwing the ball, that would result in a free kick against you if you threw the ball. What they’re actually doing is handballing it, Ie punching it to their teammates.
    3) tackling is a major part of the game. If you’re tackled, you have to legally dispose of the ball ( either by kicking or handballing it). If you don’t, or if you drop the ball, it’s ruled holding the ball and your tackler is awarded a free kick. If however you tackle a player who doesn’t have the ball, that’s holding the man, and the person you tackled gets the free kick. You can’t tackle too high or low, above the shoulder or below the knee is considered dangerous and you’ll be penalised.
    4) to score you have to kick the ball between the two large goal posts - that’s a goal and is worth 6 points. If the ball is touched, or it hits the post, or you miss and it goes between the talk post or the short post (the behind post) that’s a behind and is worth 1 point.
    5) it is a very large ground - it’s a cricket ground.
    6) there are 18 players on the ground for each team and 4 on the bench.
    7) if you catch the ball from a kick that hasn’t been touched or hasn’t touched the ground (ie on the full) that’s a mark, and that is a free kick
    8) yes, rules have changed in recent years because of concussion
    9) there are 18 teams in the AFL, and yes, over the years, rivalries have been formed.
    10) footy is definitely not a slow scoring team!
    11) they’re not called refs in footy, they’re umpires
    12) my team is Melbourne Demons, the oldest club in the competition. They’re currently top of the ladder, but they’re the team with the longest premiership drought (1964)
    13) this is a highlights video, but hits like this is not the major part of the game. The game is very much a free flowing, running game.
    14) there are 3 field umpires, 4 boundary umpires and 2 goal umpires.

It was originally played on cricket fields which are round, still played on a lot of cricket fields but there's a lot more purpose build stadiums now and they've maintained the tradition. Fun fact: There's no set size for the size of the field, for example, the Sydney Cricket Ground (AFL in the winter) is significantly smaller than the Adelaide Oval (AFL in the winter).

    • @TheCommodity
      @TheCommodity  3 года назад

Does that give a team an advantage over another?

    • @dresdyn100
      @dresdyn100 3 года назад

@The Commodity Sort of, when it comes to home games and what the players are used to playing on but like NFL there's a lot of movement of players between teams particularly end of season so they adapt pretty quickly. It's originally a Melbourne based league so the finals (play-offs) are largely played on the Melbourne Cricket Ground to maintain the tradition, which is one of the larger fields in the professional game.
With regards to concussion, there's now very strict protocols in place. In the past, teams were only allowed 4 on the bench but now, they've allowed for an extra sub. If a player is sent for a head injury assessment (HIA) during the game, that extra sub is put on the field. There's also mandatory stand-down periods if a player suffers a concussion, depending on the severity of the injury it can be from 1 to 4 weeks or even longer.
As for no pads? In Australia we often wonder if the players in NFL wear pads to protect themselves from the other players pads lol.
I've lived in the US twice for a couple of years each time and I love NFL (go Ravens!) and when I introduce AFL to an NFL fan they tend to love it once they understand it. Fast, hard hitting, high scoring; lot of similarities. The main difference being there's almost no stoppages in game-play so the players have a lot more endurance fitness and train specifically for that rather than explosive bursts.
I played Rugby Union most of my life and the few times I played AFL it was tough. In Rugby (both forms) you have a pretty good idea where the hits are going to come from, much like the NFL. But in AFL, there's no off-side rule so a hit can come from anywhere at any time when you least expect it.
I'm not even going to start the Tom Brady or Michael Jordan of AFL discussion, way too controversial and like most fans of any sport, it's hard to remain objective.

you can kkick it from any part of the field to ateammate and most players try to get or inside the 50metre line before they kick for a goal. The two tall posts in the center are the goal posts and kicking between them scores a goal which is six points and between the large post and small post on either side is one point, otherwise referred to as a behind. Some players have kicked goals from as far as 80 to 90 metres out from the goals.

Most of these hits you are seeing are actually quite legal. What makes a "bump" illegal is if the player runs PAST the ball to make the bump, or if its too high, or too low (protecting heads and knees). So if 2 players are heading, head on, towards the ball, they can hit each other side on AT the ball, but if one player runs past the ball before contact is made its illegal. Also if they meet face to face (chest to chest for example, its legal unless contact is made by hands or arms above the shoulders (neck, head area). If one player dives down to get the ball and takes out the other players legs below the knees this is also illegal .

Correct disposal = kicking, handball where ball is hit with the fist only. Player can run with the ball but only 15 metres before he has to bounce it. Players can mark the ball and can either continue to play or stop and take a deliberate kick. The score = goal through the two big sticks is worth 6 points and a behind when it goes between the small and big post or hits the goal post and is worth 1 point. So a team that kicked 10 goals 6 behinds would have a total score of 66 points. The opposition player can try to get the ball from a player by tackling and a legitimate tackle is grabbing the player between the shoulder and knees. Not allowed to have fling tackles or anything. Bumping players is allowed if the ball is near the player and it's not above the shoulder. Many of the bumps and hits you see highlighted are illegal and will result in the player being charged and missing games. When it comes to the best player, this game is over a hundred years old and there's been so many brilliant players. Currently, Dustin Martin is touted as being the best, but the players have different roles on field and it's hard to judge who's the 'best'.

You also don't need to pin the back to the ground, its just illegal to fall into someones back when tackling, so you generally try and turn them so they end up on their back or side (making it harder for you to fall on their back).

    X-Y-Z
X is behinds (1pt), Y is a goal (6), and Z is the sum of the two, like this:
    1-1-7
It evolved around the time American football did but was officially codified much earlier: someone said "hey what if we just pick it up and run"

The video you were watching is highlighting bumps and tackles - there is a lot more to this game than that. High jumping marks (catching the ball), long distance and pin point accuracy kicking, running and bouncing an unpredictable ball, a field 160metres (300+ feet) across and longer on the goal to goal distance, No padding or body armour - it's a game for gladiators.
As for ethnicity in the game, Aboriginal people in communities make up the largest percentage of players, and in the top league they are over represented per head of population, Black Africans who have immigrated are making their presence felt, as are SE Asian descent Aussies.
Some "gridiron" players have come here to make names for themselves as Aussie Rules players and gone home smashed physically and mentally. Few rugby players have translated their skills to AFL and succeeded.
The game was invented in Melbourne to keep cricketers fit during the winter, some say based on a game played by the local Aborigines

Onthe run you have to bounce the ball every 10 metres otherwise it is a penalty free kick to the other side. Any player caught with the ball in a tackle is caught holding the ball and it is a free kick to other side.

Rugby, both Union and League are played on a rectangular field similar to the NFL; AFL(Aussie Rules) is played on an oval shaped field, cricket is played on the same oval field. In Rugby, each team starts at opposite ends of the field; in AFL, the players are of both teams are spread over the entire oval. Rugby has two upright post with a cross bar as their goals; Aussie rules have two middle posts and two outer post as their goals. To score In Aussie rules if you get the ball between the two middle post, that is a goal and worth it 6 points; if the ball passes between a middle and outer posts, that is a 'behind' and worth 1 point. The team with the highest number of points wins the game. If you have a score of 20 10 130, the way to read this is the first number is the Goals (each goal equals 6 points); the second number is the Behinds (each behind equals 1 point), and the final number is the total of the Points for goals and behinds.

The semi circle at each end of the field is the 50 metre line. It has no value in regards to rules as you can kick a goal from 1 metre from the goal or 65 metres from the goal and as long as no one else touches the ball, the ball can dribble trough, bounce through or be 5, 10 metres above the ground.

Yes 6 points for kicking it between center posts and 1 point for between the inner post and outer posts, also if the call hits the center posts it's classed as a behind which is worth 1 point and if a defending player touches the ball before it goes through the center then the attacking side gets 1 point.
AFL is nothing like Rugby/ soccer or US NFL, it's completely different in every way, starting with the field size and yes bouncing is required, a tackle above the shoulders give a penalty of a free kick to the player being tackled and the field is the same shape as the ball only it's flat.
Our biggest ground is the MCG ( Melbourne Cricket Ground) holds 110,000 people at max attendance.
The refs are in Yellow usually. try www.AFL.com for the rules.

In terms of AFL we use to have a liaison with Ireland as they play something similar in Gaelic Football. We sometimes drew players from Ireland to play in our league. And yes we have quite a few Indigenous players in our football leagues as they are fast and really agile. As our Nation has grown we now have players representing all sorts of places on our planet. Our sports and the players are vibrant and dam tough.

AFL was founded in 1858, first NFL teams were founded in 1892, so NFL wasn't around yet, both NFL and rugby work plays in measured distances and constant stop start play. AFL plays make for running plays often end to end often for a few minutes at a time. NFL and rugby carry the ball in hand whereas AFL kicks the ball, handballs as theyre running from man to man or runs with it himself but bouncing the ball at least 16 yard per bounce on the run but kicking man to man is definately the best way as they can kick often up to 60 yards. A ball from a kick from either side player can be jumped for and caught as long as it's not touched mid air it's called a mark and gives a free kick to the high flying player

You have to either kick the ball or punch it out of your hand. You cannot throw it. If running with the ball you have to bounce it ar least every 15 metres. A catch is called a mark and the marker receives an unimpinged free kick. It is played on the largest playing field of any sport in the world on natural turf. To score you have to kick the ball, without it being touched, through the two center poles (a goal worth 6 points -called behinds) or scores a point (behind) if kicked between one of the outside and centre posts. If the ball is touched and passes through through the centre sticks it's worth one behind. Players are the fittest of any football code with the most stamina. There are 4 quarters each of 20 minutes with added time for stoppages. If you tackle a player it has to be below the head and the hips. The referees (umpires) are on the field and have a single colour top. The stadiums are the largest in the world. The MCG can hold over 100,000 spectators.

To get a goal it must be kicked from below the knee by the attacking team, through the big posts , it can bounce through , but it must not be touched by anybody from either team . If it IS touched and still goes through, it scores a point.if it hits one of the big posts, or gives through a big and Little post it’s also a point. You must bounce the ball at least every 15 metres. “ what Is AFL explains everything else! Happy watching.

Guys, you really, really have to check out a series of rugby league games that come under the banner of "state of origin". Apart from that, all major codes of "football" played in Australia differ from grid iron in one big way. The play doesn't stop, apart from penalties, injuries (sometimes) and breaks and allows a dianamic in the games where the impact of a team can either fall or lift as the game progresses depending on which side maintain or even lift their effort. There is also a less emphasis on the size players with differing rolls in the game suited to differing sized players a big factor in both rugby league and rugby union (yep, two totally different codes) is that tackles are legal around the ankles of a player and not seen as a trip.

  • @stevesymonds7724

Australian Football is played on grass without exception. There is nothing artificial about the turf. Hitting grass hard does far less damage to the player than hitting astroturf or any other artificial surface. When running with the ball, the player must bounce it every 15 metres or pass it to another player. The players know how many of their steps is 15m. High scores are common. A goal is 6 points and a behind is one point. A goal is scored if an attacking player kicks the ball between the two large posts without anyone else touching it. If it is touched, hits the post or goes between a big and a small post, it is a behind and worth one point. The score you were seeing was 94 to 74 which could have been 15 goals 4 points, to 12 goals 2 points but an accurate game like that would be unusual. It is more likely to be 14 10 94 to 11 8 74.

The most common injury is acl. I played for several years and I only bruised my ribs twice. I got worse injuries playing basketball, fractured/ broken bones and a dislocation. But in football you'll get scratches and bruises every week. If you didn't you weren't playing hard enough

Agree with others here, "What is AFL" is a better descriptive compilation of the action and rules of the game, and will help Miles get his head around the scoring and bouncing issues. Also, the dudes in fluro are the umpires fellas. You mentioned you couldn't see them, yet there were two onscreen. There are also trainers that run on and off with water and first aid. In one video you saw guys in pink fluro in one shot. My dad did this for years and years for his beloved Eastlake Footy Club in Canberra, ACT. I call AFL our religion, seriously. A midweek ritual of training and comradery, followed by weekend patronage and fellowship. It originated from cricket players, clubs and grounds wanting a sport to play in the winter off-season. Hence the size of players and grounds used. So love your channel, I'm addicted. It doesn't hurt that y'all are focussing your content on downunder. Would gladly host you should you ever come to Gold Coast, Queensland.

6 points if between 2 big posts. 1 point if ball goes between tall post and short post. if ball hits tall post on the full it is 1 point

Bounce the ball every 15 metres.
Must fist (handball) the ball or kick it to pass. Ball must go 15m for a kick to count as a mark when grabbed.
Middle sticks is worth 6 points. Between the sides or hitting the post is 1 point.
If you dont kick or handball and had time to, you get a free kick for incorrect disposal or holding the ball.
You hold onto the player on the ground so the ball doesn't get out. So then the umpire throws it up like the start of basketball and the ruckman tap it down to the other players.
6 players in each 3rd of the ground to start and general positions, but players free to go anywhere.
Can't tackle high or low, can't tackle into the back with players landing face down (push in the back)
They're some of the main points of the game. More to it, but basics.

I agree with other comments; watch the ‘what is AFL?’ Video.
Also a couple other notes for the video, we actually have plenty of indigenous Australian players as well as a few Sudanese and believe it or not a couple Irishmen.
Ankle injuries, knee injuries and shoulder injuries a plenty. Concussions are very common and normal pretty much. People don’t even really blink an eye at concussions.
The scoring works in that if you kick the ball between the middle two posts, it’s six points (a goal). If the ball is going between the two big posts but is touched by another player before going through it is one point (a behind). Between the big inside post and the smaller outside post that is a behind. The other team can also ‘rush’ a behind which scores the opposing team a behind but also gives you possession and control of the game.
There’s a lot of rules around tackling and such that has been brought in to help injuries but injuries are still a plenty. You can get suspended for as little as week up to a fair few weeks depending on the rule breaking and the injury caused to the other player. Not only having to miss games, if you’re suspended you also can’t win the Brownlow which is one of the most prestigious awards of the AFL season.
Richmond are considered the best team of the last 5 years and their best player Dusty Martin is considered the best current player in the AFL. But if you want some other greats of the current game, Marcus Bontempelli and Christian Petracca are both excellent players.
Our refs or umpires as we call them do stay away from play, so as to not get injured obviously but they’re the ones in Fluro yellow.
Kicking is the most effective way of getting the ball from one end (your defensive end) to the other end (your offensive end) but a lot of the footy has evolved into quick handball footy where you have to hit it with your fist to team members.
There are so many rich rivalries in the AFL and supporters are incredibly passionate. For example; my state has two teams and one of the first things you ask when meeting someone new is what team you support. Twice a year the two teams in my state meet and play what is called a showdown and it will be the biggest crowd our state draws in for a football game every single year.
I could go on for days; AFL supporters are some of the most passionate fans you’ll see of all time. A lot of families in Australia have been supporting the same footy team for generations. For example my grandmother was the biggest Port Adelaide supporter when they were just in our state league and have continued to follow them when they joined the national league.
Queensland and NSW are very much considered ‘rugby states’ but the other Australian states, AFL is the biggest sport by far. Most people I know only really loyally follow AFL and will only occasionally watch other sports.
Editing to add; the grand final is one of the biggest days on the Australian calendar and will quite literally stop the country almost. I know a few years ago I had to work on grand final day when a team from my state was playing and lunch time on a Saturday the store was completely empty other than staff. We ended up having a staff member bring in a tv and we watched the game at work.

Two tall centre poles - kick between them 6 pts - if between the side poles it’s 1 pt - start from centre after every gosl

To score 6 points you must kick it between the two big poles. To score one point you can kick it between a big and small post, have the ball go through the big post not by kicking it or hitting the post

Kick the ball through the middle sticks equals 6 points. If you kick it between the side posts and one of the bigger middle ones you get one point and it's called a behind

It is mandatory to bounce the ball EVERY 15 Metres, or the umpire deems it Holding the ball. That means the opposition player gets a Free Kick. When a player kicks the Football between the Two Large Posts, that is called a Goal, which is worth 6 points. Between the Large and Outer Lower Post, that is worth 1 Point.

yeah pretty similar in Australia as well.. most of us don't go much on low scoring sports. basketball is probably the biggest it's ever been here. though ice hockey is not a high scoring contest, i still think it's exciting to watch due to the hard hitting and insane goalie saves.

There were already rules to protect the head. Now there is a concussion test if a player gets a head knock. I think they may have changed a few things. Also some players have had to retire very young because of concussions. If you get a concussion, I think you miss one week (rested) at minimum.

I’m always baffled about how anyone could mistake Australian rules for any form of rugby.
