Great classic (but a prime example of why it’s best to listen to the studio version first).
In this case, yes. This performance omitted an entire verse.
awful version of this song
Completely agree. I love live performances but this song is oddly heavy for a mostly acoustic song. The studio version deserves to be heard.
I didn't see that moment of recognition when you realize what the song is about...
"But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola....
You know what, around the 5:30 mark i began to really question it in my head, I didn't say it aloud as I didn't want to potentially misgender Lola haha, but I was starting to think "Hold up, is Lola a man?!" I was thinking either a man, or a very masculine woman. I kinda wish I shared the thought now watching this back, after we finished the video I did put my mind to rest by looking up the meaning, and it became very obvious what the lyrics were trying to imply - Dayle (Brother on the left)
They both smirked at the "boys will be girls line" and she smirked at the "so is Lola" line.
Unfortunaly they didnt concentrate on the music and didnt feel it. They was talking about their dresses after the last verse...
Next time they will unserstand music better :)
Ha, i was thinking after i saw you guys enjoyed the instruments, "Wait until these guys mom tells them what the song is about."
Hahaha yeah
Well I'm not the world's most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola
There's a Weird Al parody of this called Yoda. Worth taking a listen!
I don't think they got that line!
@@charlottewood8964 I don't think they got it either, because I saw no reaction on their faces like with other reactors. LOL
Ray Davies is a legend among British singer/songwriters, the Kinks were up there with the other 60's British supergroups like the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Who (to name a few!). As for Lola, despite the risque (for the time) subject matter, the main controversy was them having to change the lyrics to 'Cherry Cola' from 'Coca Cola' because the BBC didn't allow advertising!
I think you missed the fact that LOLA IS A MAN! It was based on a true story. The Kinks manager was clubbing in Paris, when a beautiful “ woman “ caught his eye. They spent the evening drinking and dancing. It wasn’t until later that he found out Lola was a man ( transvestite )
hahahah love the comments "LOLA IS A MAN!"
The song is about an actual experience the band's manager had when he first came to London.
Two points ... this is a short and edited version as there is more to the song. You are also seeing a live performance later in their career as they had short hair and were dressed differently in the earlier years. This song was already out for years so the audience knew it and the rest of the song.
It went over my head the first time I heard it in the 60s.
The Kinks are great live. Saw them in San Antonio back in the 80's.
I'm so glad I heard this as a kid. It helped make me more open minded and accepting.
It went right over their heads.
Saw the Kinks back in the early seventies, in Washington DC. Great songs and a reputation for fighting on stage. was lived up to, Memorable concert.
The studio version woud have been so much better to introduce you to what was one of our top bands.
Yes.. they were around back then too.
I grew up in London and played drums and sang in several local bands during the 1960s...I have to say that The Kinks were my favourite band in the 60s all of their songs are great and have real meaning to them and were very relevant for the times and still today...This song was released in 1970 and I emigrated to Australia the same year...I highly recommend you check out their other songs "Waterloo Sunset" would be a good start...Good luck to you both!
Priceless!
I've heard this song thousands of times.
Great reaction. You will love "come dancing" by the Kinks.
A classic! TheKinks were rubbing lyrics&chops elbows with folks like Cream, RollingStones, & Beatles...
I think those other groups were better able ultimately to jump culture across ThePond than TKs, although they did make their mark in the USA of the '60s as well.
Thanx for the memories your reaction evokes!
Most people who know them , love them. I think that their relatively light catalogue didn't help. they weren't overly productive.
The Kinks, They were ahead of the Times, the first LGBTQ+ song.
Should do the album version first. I saw Ray by himself touring doing acoustic show and chat . It was a magical experience hearing the stories of his songs and life. As the night went on we realized a 7:30 show it was almost midnight and the audience had to yell up to Ray our subway was closing and we had to leave. We all had so much fun .
I'd love to see you react to Led Zeppelin's 1973 live performance from Madison Square Garden of "Since I've Been Loving You."
Hear, hear! They'll be pleasantly surprised.
Brilliant.
Check out
Led Zeppelin "Since I've Been Loving You" live at Madison Square Gardens 1973 😉
Such an old song that it was already an old song when I was young and heard it for the very first time…
This is the second reaction video on Lola that I've watched and neither time did the people figure out what the story was about. I mean it's completely obvious
I have wondered if Lou Reed was influenced by the Kinks and Lola with his Transformer album.
If you want more Kinks try Waterloo Sunset or Autumn Almanac. For other music from this era check out Jethro Tull their Locomotive breath is really special.
Shame back then us yanks kicked the kinks out then😢
Lola is one of the songs my Generation of German scouts sung on those early summer camps at the campfire. My basic guitar skills were just about enough to scrub this off my campfire guitar. (edit: I was born in 1972)
Great job. For an excellent live performance with hair, passion and skilled musicianship by a 3 piece band from 50+ years ago, check out “Inside Looking Out” (Live 1969) by Grand Funk Railroad
This one's missing a couple of verses.
It's a 4 piece band. John Gosling is on pianp
@@harlanginsberg7269 not on the live version from 1969. No piano
The Kinks had to change “Coca-Cola” on Lola, because they wanted their song played on the radio. The BBC wouldn't allow that with the commercial plug, so they changed it to cherry calo.
2 guitars and a bass
Listen to the song Lola is a MAN

@@RNDReactsi think she is trans
Ray Davis wrote this song after the bands manager pulled what he thought was a young lady when they was on the piss somewhere one night ! I dread to think how it ended 🤣
I feel like you didn't hear what they sang..."I'm not the world's most masculine man but I know what I am, and I'm glad I'm a man, and so is Lola, lo lo lo lo, Lola"...
Sir Raymond Douglas Davies CBE is probably in assisted care by now, but he is a genius.
An incredibly brave guy too, a truer knight than most bearers of that title - how many of us would try to take on a purse-snatcher on the streets of New Orleans?
always fun to watch the lyrics "I know what I am, and I'm glad I'm a man, and so is Lola" go flying over people's heads..... and calling the band The Kinks is no clue either.
Lola was not a she. Lola was a dude!😂😂
He forgot to sing all these lines or they edited them out:
Well, we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said "Dear boy, won't you come home with me?"
Well, I'm not the world's most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes, well I almost fell for my Lola
La-la-la-la Lola

Personally, I’m not too into reactions to live versions for a first listen. Hope you do some studio reactions. I’d like to check out your channel. Personal recommendation. Try studio versions first. If you like it, you can still react to a live version ☺️ Also, for true music lovers, 2 songs for ya.
Martin Sexton-Can’t stop thinking about you
Now ironically I’m going to recommend a live performance. In this case tho, there are no studio performances and I’m picking the best live version I’ve found.
Tedeschi Trucks Band-Keep on Growing live at Fox theater.
Both have tons of great music. Hopefully I just led you to two great rabbit holes!!
Depends on the live version...but yeah this is not a great version
I Love the Lyrics "In a Dark Brown Voice" .... Can You Guess What That Means?
This song is all about transvestism. Lola is a Mr not a Miss.
Ray Davies was a hell of a front man and The KInks are very underated by some.
Do yourselves a favor. Listen to the studio version. This is cut and the voices are not at the same level. Fun though.
I'm sorry to spell this out for you, but Lola was a male transvestite of the late English club scene, and Ray D was a bit confused. Hopefully... 😂
Based on an actual occurrence with the bands manager, in a bar, drunk and a transvestite
Must’ve been a pretty wild story to tell back then! Haha it’s cool that the manager shared this with the band and they made a song about it
@@RNDReacts oh no, they were all there and realized “she” was a “he”. He was very drunk and they just had a great time watching 😂
Guys, did you "GET" the line saying what Lola IS??
(guy on the left) haha I briefly considered what was being said but didn't want to jump to conclusions or potentially misgender lola, around 2 thirds into the song i started to think about it, but I didn't speak my thoughts completely and just considered lola my be a somewhat masculine woman...obsiously now I'm very much aware from reading the lyrics and re-listening to the song
- - - - - ya missed the lyrics - - - - -
FYI, the Kinks were banned from performing in the US after playing this song.
A Linebacker in a dress is still a Linebacker in a dress. No matter what color the dress is.
Lola should be pretty popular. And you're saying come on at such used to think about it. So i'm trying to understand you're just coming out and
Where is this Grey hoddie from? It looks nice.
And its a shame, that you missed so much of the Lyrics of this masterpiece.
Please react to Falco - Jeanny, preferably with Translation and Video.
If you still need context Afterwards, Im there for you.
Falco was also a great Artist and ahead of his time. RIP
My sister in the video made the grey hoodie 🎨✏️
@@RNDReacts compliments to your sister.
And react to Falco, but please authentically and for the first time
Listen to the lyrics
They skipped half of it!
You totally missed the payoff
Do you know what the song is about?
We do now 😅😅😅
Responder in the most British of accents, "Neva heard of the Kinks" about the most British of bands. Bruv!?!
For some odd reason, the famous 'reveal' line often gets misquoted. Ray actually sings...'I'll bet I'm a man and so's Lola'.
The official lyrics are below check it out it has always been these lines I'm 67 and had the original lyrics when it first was released.
Well, I left home just a week before
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said "Dear boy, I'm gonna make you a man"
Well, I'm not the world's most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
Lola
@@TerenceShortman I've listened to this hundreds of times, repeating it on RUclips. I always hear Ray sing 'bet'. Maybe he changed it at the last minute during recording?. There's a famous screw up on Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Centre of the Earth where the choir sing the wrong verse in one song, but the lyrics in the album sleeve say another, so its possible.
@@mark-nm4tc For the last 501+ years,I always, thought it was "I'm glad I'm A Man and so is Lola"..
@@Isleofskye I've listened to this time and time again....pretty sure it's 'I'll bet'...he clearly sings 'I'll'... which would have to be 'I'm'... if matched with 'glad'. He pronounces a 'b' not a 'g'. Don't know where 'glad' comes from?.
@@mark-nm4tc MARK, Please! I bought my first records in London in 1960 and there have been a couple of records where I have gone decades and not heard the words correctly and this IS what you have done, mon ami.
I have just listened to "The Kinks-Lola(Official Audio and at EXACTLY 3 Minutes on the 4'02' Seconds tape,it CLEARLY, says, "I'm GLAD I'm a Man, and so is Lola!"...
Have a listen,mi amigo:)
I prefer the The Kinks - Lola (Official Music Video) ruclips.net/video/6CzrYXcXweI/видео.html
Check out Bon Jovi wanted dead or alive
Skipped it.
This was not good and incomplete. Please redo with the studio version.
Love this song didn't like the video.
Wow! Completely clueless
Oh Man! You missed the punchline totally!...
So many pauses,shame.
How do you find the worst version of the song on youtubr? Admirable but you missed out 😂
You stop it too much. Many comments can be made at end of song.
way too many stops to talk. No fun to watch.
Sorry that's just how we do it on this channel, just to avoid potential copyright and also we think it would be unfair to have the entire video play start to finish on here, without any discussion, as that wouldn't really qualify for "fair use" of the clip. I'm sure there's plenty reactions you'll be able to find without pauses though, thanks for checking out the channel
Why does everyone who listen to this misses the punchline?! So frustrating! Just after it you paused and talked about make up 😡
Great reaction..it's the Kinks worst song.
