So you want to know about the Midjourney aspect ratio parameter?
As awesome and fun as Midjourney is, most people tend to get bored by the default square format of the images it generates.
That's why one of the most common things new users want to change is the format, size, and dimensions of their images.
In this guide, I'll show you how to use the Midjourney aspect ratio parameter to control the format of your images.

With yesterday's update (2/1/2023), v4 and niji can now do any aspect ratio between 1:2 to 2:1.
Yup, saw that as well. Pinned!
@@TokenizedAI Does v4 even do ar 2:3 every pic it spits out is a square
@@househuntinghero Of course it does. I do it all the time. Just check my latest videos. Sounds like you're entering the parameter incorrectly.
@@TokenizedAI a leopard sitting next to a modern fireplace looking fierce, 8k, photorealistic, daytime, watercolor painting,--ar 2:3 --q 2 --s 250 , Does this look wrong?
Your prompt is broken. There's no space between your last comma and the parameter (,--ar) so MJ doesn't recognize the parameter flag. It thinks it's part of the last part of the text prompt. Add a space in-between (, --ar) and you'll be fine.
Keep going man. Your videos are great!!
I appreciate it!
Great explanation. precise and concrete. Good Work!!!
Glad you liked it!
I love all your videos man ty
Thanks so much!
never seen a so wonderful tutorial, thanks from Sicily!
Glad you liked it!
Glad to have found your channel and website, great resources!
I’m trying to figure out if custom aspect ratios in MJ are possible.
I need a website banner that’s 1200px x 270px.
I saw elsewhere ar 7:4 could be tweaked to 8:4 and 16:9 to 18:9 which made me wonder if it could be tweaked to something like 16:4 to get closer to a 4:1 ratio. If not, any suggestions what - -ar aspect# number I can use to get as close as possible?
Why not just use whichever is closest and then crop accordingly?
Very informative and fun to watch. Subscribed! :D Btw. loved that granny creation!
Haha, yeah I figured she embodies exactly what I wanted to say. Sometimes picture truly is worth a 1000 words.
Probably the most practical consideration is how aspect ratio relates to resolution. Especially if you’re looking to produce images larger than a thumbnail. e.g. 21:9 - (now available in V5), gives you the highest resolution of 2304 x 1024 compared to the maximum upscaled res that 1:1 offers (1024 x 1024). Wade McMaster has done some great YT vids that explain it really well.
Are you sure those dimensions are for the individual images or perhaps just the full image grid of 4?
Reason I ask is because the limit isn't really in the dimensions but in the total Megapixels available to distribute. Your statement kind of implies that there's more than 1 full Megapixel of unused resources when using a simple square ratio.
Not saying you're wrong or that Wade is. I just it hard to believe, considering that v5 doesn't even have a real upscaler yet.
@@TokenizedAI
Good point. I think this could form the basis of another great video. Over to you for testing and clarification. I’ve seen most of your MJ vids. Learning heaps. Many thanks. Keep up the great work.
@@TokenizedAI
Hi. Here’s an update on my last reply. After testing in V5, you can most definitely achieve a 1024 x 1024 sized image from a single, upscaled 1:1 MJ image. The catch is that you have to select “High quality” in /settings before you create the image, (which is twice the cost). The same image in “Base quality” gives you 762 x 762
The best way to get the highest resolution (within the limits of your quality selection is 16:9, 9:16, 21:9 or 9:21
I think it would make a great video if you have the time and energy. As far as I know, you would be the first to address this hugely significant issue. And at the end of the day, what’s the use of all this tech if you can only use your magnificent images to create postage stamps?
great examples as usual! Do you have any hint on how to make MidJourney stop cropping of the top of the head in a portrait that was originally created in square but now I'm trying to remake it in 3:2 ? Various combinations of seed and image prompts still give me chopped of top of the head )
MJ tends to crop a lot when you use wider ratios. Only solution to that it is adjust the ange of the shot (e.g. wide angle shot). But it doesn't always work.
I have now watched every video. Thank you! First MJ YT creator i watched all of their content! Appreciate it! --v 5
I feel so humbled 🙏
can you explain which aspect is needed for shirt prints? midjourney art always seems too small.
much appreciated!!
You're asking the wrong question. Aspect ratio only defines the "format" of the image, not the resolution. MJ's max resolution isn't really big enough for most print on demand application. But you can use sites like LetsEnhance to upscale them to much bigger sizes using AI.
Maybe trying to create something uplifting.?…Your humor is wry - but some of your viewers probably do not have any humor..If a designer watches your videos - they will want to learn HOW TO CREATE SOMERHING USEFUL - like a product design that is a derivative of their own original design. That is going to encourage inventiveness - in stead of saying “do your shenanigans…”AI is one of the most valuable tool ever created - lets tech people how they can use it for good and yes- practical purposes. All creative people on this thread will agree. The rest….they are just nubbies with time to waste….THANK YOU, Great step by step instructions!❤
hey,
how to make the promt be generated in several aspect ratios at the same time?
You'll have to use permutations for that. E.g. "some prompt --ar {2:3, 16:9}"
I'm a beginner and i'm learning a lot from your site and videos. I have a question that I can't find the answer to. On more than one occasion I have seen aspect ratio or --ar not just once in a prompt but multiple times. I saw one where the same --ar was repeated one after another and another used two different /imagine(url for an image), text prompt, --ar 2:3 --iw 0.85 --ar 4:3. What is the reason?
The reason is that the person was copy and pasting and just forgot to remove it. The second one is ignored.
Thank you.
Welcome!
thank you for being a teacher
extraordinary for me👍👍
It's my pleasure!
Is there a way to get a 1080X1920 image? I tried several ways but I can't in photoshop the image is a little small and loses quality.
Aspect ratio isn't the same thing as dimensions. You can get the same aspect ratio a 1080:1920, which is 9:16.
What you're looking for is a upscaler.
Question: How can I create a similar portrait of the woman at the beginning of your video, prompt wise?
Take a screenshot and feed it into /describe
You are amazing!!!!
Thanks 🤗
What’s the best aspect ratio to begin with before midjourney creates the image if you want to resize that image for different digital prints? Such as greeting cards, wall art, posters, coloring books, t-shirts, etc?
It's best to start off with whatever format you need. Trying to resize the exact same image after-the-fact by using the seed and only changing the aspect ratio is not a good idea because it will usually result in stretched or squeezed images. This behavior is specific to MJ v4. Although it's been improved since last week, it's still a bit of a issue.
@@TokenizedAI I was hoping that wouldn’t be the case. Thanks for your response. I enjoy your midjourney videos, very helpful!
@@icebirdd Just had an idea. Maybe try adding the original upscaled image as an image prompt. Maybe that will keep it more consistent in terms of proportions.
@@TokenizedAI I’ll give that a try. Thanks!
Just found you so so good. You have saved me days of wandering in the MJ labyrinth. Please keep up the great work. I’m heading back to watching but wanted to let you know you are appreciated.
Aspect worked. Thank you!
Excellent!
What's your take on the difference between midjourney v4 & v5? Love your videos btw 👌
My latest video answers that question.
So i cant make aspect ratio for mobile phones?
You can create images with a 9:16 ratio if you're using Version 3. With Version 4 you'll have to use 2:3 and then crop it for social media.
Square aspect ratio should be used on Instagram and in facbook ads, like they literally tell you to use it and not even worded the direction as a recommendation. Version 4 has limited aspect ratio options currently so some cropping may be needed for some uses on social media until it becomes available.
@@Edbrad Yes, for ads that is correct. But not if you're posting Stories.
When I type -ar 3:2, nothing changes; it still comes out square. Am I missing something?
Hey, actually when I type “aspect “ instead of “at” it works! 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks a million, these videos are gold!! This is the first channel I ever subscribed to. 👍
I think it's because you used the wrong prefix for the parameter. -ar is not the same as --ar.
Oh, I see! Thank you!
Yes Photoshop sound shocking! I prefer Affinity :D
Affinity is so much more convenient nowadays. If Adobe wasn't such an industry standard, I'd ditch it in a heartbeat.
Nice1
Thanks 🙂
Damn man, how do you turn this into a 6 minute video?
I do it on purpose, so I can trigger snarky comments like this one from a certain category of people on YT. They always make my day 🤣
A 6 minute long video only to tell you have to write --ar 3:2.....
A salty comment just to show that you're impatient.... 😉
