I don't ship them but I like the side of this fandom that tries to go in dept of they're relationship. I accually would love to see the prequel about them. Cuz I really don't get why Curly would just go comfort Jimmy instead of Anya when she was the victim. I get that theyre are firends but it would be way better to take Swansea and lock Jimmy in the cockpit together so Jimbo wouldn't do antything else, or just stop Jimmy for blowing up the ship. This is probably one of the best, if not THE BEST, mouthwashing animatic I've ever seen. Their relationship is so complex, and the game hints towards it, but not enough. This expansion of a possible backstory not only makes sense but it also understands that Jimmy is human. A human with probable severe mental disorders. The "struggle for a life" that Curly helped fight, the only person that gave a fuck about his existence. The metaphorical shadow horse is constantly circling Jimmy, bringing in the darkness, pulling him deeper into the shadows, and Curly pulls him away from it, back to the light. It's poetic how the horse shifts into circling Curly, ready to bite him, take away the light from Jimmy's life. And it succeeded. The crash happens, Curly burns. And now Jimmy is actually alone. No one there to pull him away from the darkness of his mind, and he goes insane (Please, dear reader, do not think this is me forgiving Jimmy's actions. Far from it. Honestly I think Jimmy should have went to the mental ward first BEFORE dying or going to prison. (As some people are hoping for) at least that would mean he'd suffer more if he stops being delusional and is forced to take responsibility, with the knowledge that he now knows what he did was wrong.
So in conclusion Jimmy became just like his father in this version of his backstory. Also I really like the animation, pretty sweet. Shown the abused becoming the abuser quite well along with handling that theme well.
HOLY SHIT THIS IS A WONDERFUL INTERPRETATION OF JIMMY. Jimmy is definitely a troubled kid. His family is broken, people bully him a lot, and he's just a destructive presence all around, especially to himself. Curly is Jimmy's only light, the only good in his life. He is the only family, friend, and love that doesn't treat him like shit. So he clings onto him like a venomous snake. As it turns out, Curly is his only reason to live. He can't imagine a life without Curly, so he won't let him go and allow him to make other connections. But soon he loses more and more of his light because other people 'want' Curly too, and Curly, in turn, reciprocates. So, instead of listening to Curly and trying to open his heart, he closes it further and hurts others doing it. As a result... Anya and Curly gets hurt then later, the rest of the crew.
My god, I love it sooooo much! Btw FINALLY artists started to understand HOW LONG Jim and Curly were friends till the day of the crash, because tell me if it’s just me, but have you noticed a lot of arts telling us a story about Jim who met Curly only in Pony Express. Way less artists pay attention to their possible relationship. I think it also may be the reason why so many people guilt Curly for not helping Anya. And your animatic so accurate that it gives all the answers. Sometimes we are blind when your closest person turns out to be a monster. We love them too much to guilt and understand. Curly needed time to fully discover Jim’d started to go insane, that’s why he lost opportunity to fix everything and help everyone. His view of «the bigger picture » played a trick on him. I'M FOAMIMG AT THE MOUTH! Finally someone who doesn't distill Jimmy's character to only a bad guy - yes, he is a horrible person, but he isn't a cartoon villian, he has depth and you portrayed it well. The Jimmy analysers are fighting an uphill battle thank you for another reason to keep fighting.
The thing about this is that it gives food for thought on why Curly felt that Jimmy had some goodness in him. He's no longer the person he knew and the fact that he may have undermined other red flags before letting him on the job for co-pilot is what makes me disappointed in Curly. This is a beautiful animatic! Other people have already said it but I like how you humanize jimmy instead of making him pure evil. Yeah, it’s important to not think of people like Jimmy as uniquely evil in a way that’s separate from the rest of us, because we all have that same capacity to do horrible things if we don’t check ourselves.
Amazing animatic about the relation of Jimmy and Curly. I hate how people don't give Jimmy the attention that he deserves when he is the best character in the game by far. He is a horrible person, but a very well written character.
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this or if this was purposeful in the animation or just something that went that way, but I feel like at the part where Jimmy holds the knife and then hands it to Curly who's sitting across the table by touching the knife from the sharp edge and having Curly grab the handle, I feel like Jimmy was the one who really had dirtied his hands but Curly in the pursuit of being a sort of people pleasing guy, always there to help kind of friend, ended up being the one to hold the handle and put his fingertips there while Jimmy's were on the side of the sharp edge. In a way I see it that all the fault did settle on Curly, with Jimmy being the true perpetrator though Curly's desire to fix it up and have no problems made him the last one standing and the one having the blood on his hands. Which connects directly to how if he had been able to do something, or at least even gotten Jimmy ostracized from the others in a way, he would have avoided the death ending for everyone and perhaps even the crash could be somehow stopped in some way, I really like to see it that it's this way.
I never considered that Curly invited Jinbo on the very first delivery on Tulpar as a co-pilot. I thought Curly stayed there for a few years and earned the title of a Captain, before noticing his friend's struggles and inviting him as well. But it makes sense. It would be difficult to stay connected when deliveries last literal years (although, not impossible). And giving a crew to a very inexperienced Captain Curly (who might have done couple of trips as a co-pilot prior but wanted to work with JImbo when he got a chance) seems like a thing that Pony Express would do. And jealousy of watching Curly succeed (very relatively) when they started at relatively same time ate JImbo away. All this backstory only makes Curly's pov more tragic. And there wasn't a single thing he could do to help, because he recognized how badly Jimbo was doing mentally only when Jumbo tried to kill him (and himself, and three more crewmembers, and actually succeeded).
honestly i don't think it was the first trip either, it seeming so in the animatic is just the limitation of the medium i'm afraid xD but i imagine that curly had his own ladder to climb (smth like intern -> mechanic -> engineer -> co-pilot -> captain), and at some point on that ladder he managed to get jimmy in too, like maybe they were stuck loading cargo for a month or so etc. he tried to share his opportunities with jimmy, but as jimmy was quite reluctant to take them it was on a delay and slower overall compared to curly's path

as much as i am disappointed with how curly acted when confronted with the fact jimmy raped anya, i still understand. jimmy has been his friend since childhood. it's like realising your loved one has committed horrendous crimes but they've been caring for you since your birth. also i love the dead pixel metaphor. for anya, the dead pixel (jimmy) is always there, haunting her. for curly, he doesn't see it at all.
the horse fetus in the glass with anya's id nearby is a symbolism of what jlitorius did to anya the method of drugging swansea was the same he used on her the horse fetus is yk bc anya got pregnant bc of the assault and he sees her on the same level as a cartoon horse, which he's "sexually aroused" by, and in game he sees a horse fetus rather than a human fetus, a symbolism for anya in its own way

To be fair, Jimmy is a total piece of trash, but his kind of people doesn't really born with it (well, there are millions of cases, what I mean is that is very weird to he something so natural), most of the time, they are raised to be like they are. Jimmy is basically a good example of what happens when you nurture someone with terrible behaviour and never teach them something about morals and responsability.

LOVE THIS BACKSTORY. Curly was the only light in Jimmy's life, keeping the darkness in his heart/soul/mind from consuming him (and others). Jimmy was never a good friend to Curly, but Curly never gave up on him because of his genuinely compassionate nature. Jimmy never loved or cared for Curly (he didn't know how to love), rather he craved his attention and wanted to keep him under his thumb, possessive jealousy. When Jimmy saw himself losing possession of Curly (when he moved up the job ladder, when he got feelings for Anya) it drove him to lash out like the criminal he always was, feeling betrayed and abandoned by his light. Too bad that crashing the ship led to Jimmy losing the only person in the world who cared for him. Curly was Jimmy's light, and when he lost him in the crash, the darkness consumed him and everyone else.
The thing, in this MV at least, is that Jimmy did care about Curly. Jimmy saved Curly at least twice (their first meet and at the rooftop) and I think that's a very important point.

The fandom loves to ship them as a romance, and Chloe saved Max from harm a few times, but I didn't feel any genuine affection from Chloe to Max. In the same way Jimmy kept Curly around for his own needs and wants, never thinking about what might've made Curly happy (which is not how someone in love would behave imo)

you're valid! i completely subscribe to the idea that there was a lot of abuse going on (perhaps of the subtle, more insidious variety), but there was only so much runtime i had to play with + as there is already a lot, A LOT of beautiful art focusing on the bad side of their relationship i chose to highlight the ways they were there for each other too :)

The thing is, I'm not even the biggest fan of the ship? (Love it as the canonical trauma bonded feral kittens flavored tragic misunderstanding mutually destructive but all encompassing they are Soo literally!! doomed by the narrative, your honor sworn brothers thingy) But it's practically impossible not to be at least a little bit insane about their relationship and see why, yeah, ppl give it that extra flavor to their relationship. I digress It just that if the villain/hero/abuser/enabler and how the abuser dooms them all by avoiding responsibility after feeling/being wronged by the world (jimmy because he refuses to acknowledge he could even be the villain and A-Jiu because he thinks he can only ever be a villain) AND the human sticking (and loss of one eye and speech to boot) didn't bring svsss to mind already, both the background/backstory you gave Curly and Jimmy, with both the bonds but also the obligation and yes, responsibility they probably feel towards each other, the creeping bitterness, possesiveness and jealousy and then taking it out on an innocent stand in and your points on the real horror of Jimmy's evil being how human he is about it /really/ brought to mind Qijiu/A-Jiu It's a bit of a mess, cuz svsss is very meta and technically shen Jiu isnt even present in the actual novel until the extras excwpt for an in universe novel and an inferred bad timeline refecting said novel that the svsss protagonist transmigrated into as A-Jiu, the titular scum villain (who abused and therefore blackened the in universe protagonist), but ah, yeh I could definitely keep going on the parallels and then the divergences and fucking themes but this is already long enough for a maybe courtesy question jaja The endpoint would still be that your style is incredible and expressive in such a poignant way? So in conclusion Jimmy became just like his father in this version of his backstory. Also I really like the animation, pretty sweet. Shown the abused becoming the abuser quite well along with handling that theme well.
HOLY SHIT THIS IS A WONDERFUL INTERPRETATION OF JIMMY.
Jimmy is definitely a troubled kid. His family is broken, people bully him a lot, and he's just a destructive presence all around, especially to himself. Curly is Jimmy's only light, the only good in his life. He is the only family, friend, and love that doesn't treat him like shit. So he clings onto him like a venomous snake. As it turns out, Curly is his only reason to live.
He can't imagine a life without Curly, so he won't let him go and allow him to make other connections. But soon he loses more and more of his light because other people 'want' Curly too, and Curly, in turn, reciprocates. So, instead of listening to Curly and trying to open his heart, he closes it further and hurts others doing it. As a result... Anya and Curly gets hurt then later, the rest of the crew.
My god, I love it sooooo much! Btw FINALLY artists started to understand HOW LONG Jim and Curly were friends till the day of the crash, because tell me if it’s just me, but have you noticed a lot of arts telling us a story about Jim who met Curly only in Pony Express. Way less artists pay attention to their possible relationship. I think it also may be the reason why so many people guilt Curly for not helping Anya. And your animatic so accurate that it gives all the answers. Sometimes we are blind when your closest person turns out to be a monster. We love them too much to guilt and understand. Curly needed time to fully discover Jim’d started to go insane, that’s why he lost opportunity to fix everything and help everyone. His view of «the bigger picture » played a trick on him.

this makes the events of the game a lot more painful. just makes you wonder where it all went wrong with jambalaya to think it’s okay to commit such heinous crimes and how literally anyone you know could become an evil person.
I'M FOAMIMG AT THE MOUTH! Finally someone who doesn't distill Jimmy's character to only a bad guy - yes, he is a horrible person, but he isn't a cartoon villian, he has depth and you portrayed it well. The Jimmy analysers are fighting an uphill battle thank you for another reason to keep fighting.
The thing about this is that it gives food for thought on why Curly felt that Jimmy had some goodness in him. He's no longer the person he knew and the fact that he may have undermined other red flags before letting him on the job for co-pilot is what makes me disappointed in Curly. Now for those who are still disappointed in Curly could see why he sided with J Diddy so much.... Thank you for producing this Magpie !

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this or if this was purposeful in the animation or just something that went that way, but I feel like at the part where Jimmy holds the knife and then hands it to Curly who's sitting across the table by touching the knife from the sharp edge and having Curly grab the handle, I feel like Jimmy was the one who really had dirtied his hands but Curly in the pursuit of being a sort of people pleasing guy, always there to help kind of friend, ended up being the one to hold the handle and put his fingertips there while Jimmy's were on the side of the sharp edge. In a way I see it that all the fault did settle on Curly, with Jimmy being the true perpetrator though Curly's desire to fix it up and have no problems made him the last one standing and the one having the blood on his hands. Which connects directly to how if he had been able to do something, or at least even gotten Jimmy ostracized from the others in a way, he would have avoided the death ending for everyone and perhaps even the crash could be somehow stopped in some way, I really like to see it that it's this way.
I fear I will be obsessed with this now and will be non stop thinking about this video 😭 the amount of talent and effort you must have/put in is crazy

I never considered that Curly invited Jinbo on the very first delivery on Tulpar as a co-pilot. I thought Curly stayed there for a few years and earned the title of a Captain, before noticing his friend's struggles and inviting him as well. But it makes sense. It would be difficult to stay connected when deliveries last literal years (although, not impossible). And giving a crew to a very inexperienced Captain Curly (who might have done couple of trips as a co-pilot prior but wanted to work with JImbo when he got a chance) seems like a thing that Pony Express would do.
And jealousy of watching Curly succeed (very relatively) when they started at relatively same time ate JImbo away.
All this backstory only makes Curly's pov more tragic. And there wasn't a single thing he could do to help, because he recognized how badly Jimbo was doing mentally only when Jumbo tried to kill him (and himself, and three more crewmembers, and actually succeeded).
honestly i don't think it was the first trip either, it seeming so in the animatic is just the limitation of the medium i'm afraid xD but i imagine that curly had his own ladder to climb (smth like intern -> mechanic -> engineer -> co-pilot -> captain), and at some point on that ladder he managed to get jimmy in too, like maybe they were stuck loading cargo for a month or so etc. he tried to share his opportunities with jimmy, but as jimmy was quite reluctant to take them it was on a delay and slower overall compared to curly's path

LOVE THIS BACKSTORY. Curly was the only light in Jimmy's life, keeping the darkness in his heart/soul/mind from consuming him (and others). Jimmy was never a good friend to Curly, but Curly never gave up on him because of his genuinely compassionate nature. Jimmy never loved or cared for Curly (he didn't know how to love), rather he craved his attention and wanted to keep him under his thumb, possessive jealousy. When Jimmy saw himself losing possession of Curly (when he moved up the job ladder, when he got feelings for Anya) it drove him to lash out like the criminal he always was, feeling betrayed and abandoned by his light. Too bad that crashing the ship led to Jimmy losing the only person in the world who cared for him. Curly was Jimmy's light, and when he lost him in the crash, the darkness consumed him and everyone else.
The thing, in this MV at least, is that Jimmy did care about Curly. Jimmy saved Curly at least twice (their first meet and at the rooftop) and I think that's a very important point.

The fandom loves to ship them as a romance, and Chloe saved Max from harm a few times, but I didn't feel any genuine affection from Chloe to Max. In the same way Jimmy kept Curly around for his own needs and wants, never thinking about what might've made Curly happy (which is not how someone in love would behave imo)

It just that if the villain/hero/abuser/enabler and how the abuser dooms them all by avoiding responsibility after feeling/being wronged by the world (jimmy because he refuses to acknowledge he could even be the villain and A-Jiu because he thinks he can only ever be a villain) AND the human sticking (and loss of one eye and speech to boot) didn't bring svsss to mind already, both the background/backstory you gave Curly and Jimmy, with both the bonds but also the obligation and yes, responsibility they probably feel towards each other, the creeping bitterness, possesiveness and jealousy and then taking it out on an innocent stand in and your points on the real horror of Jimmy's evil being how human he is about it /really/ brought to mind Qijiu/A-Jiu
It's a bit of a mess, cuz svsss is very meta and technically shen Jiu isnt even present in the actual novel until the extras excwpt for an in universe novel and an inferred bad timeline refecting said novel that the svsss protagonist transmigrated into as A-Jiu, the titular scum villain (who abused and therefore blackened the in universe protagonist), but ah, yeh
I could definitely keep going on the parallels and then the divergences and fucking themes but this is already long enough for a maybe courtesy question jaja
