    VERY GLAD that I bought for my 74th birthday (8 days to go), a 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 400 ABS KRT Edition.

      How is the wind protection

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  5 лет назад +4

      @@gigi9467 I find it pretty decent on the Ninja, but obviously you're not getting a touring motorcycle level of protection. I don't get wind to the chest on the freeway but do notice it around my helmet, and I sit fairly upright cruising at highway speeds.

    • @LoomFactor
      @LoomFactor 5 лет назад +2

      @@gigi9467 I am fairly tall at 184 cm, but I find it find for the quick commute day in and day out. On weekends when I get out on the freeway a lot more, I find it much better than my previous naked bike. The wind flows over me - no problem, probably because my position is slightly forward. I have thought about replacing the screen with a larger one down the track - when this screen is scuffed up and dinged a bit.

    Bit the bullet and got the Z400 as my first bike. Had it delivered with 1 mile on the odometer. After a few weeks of ownership, several practice session and lots of video watching (lol) I now have just over 75 miles on it. (USA permits limit the times you can ride, and I still have a full time job) No regrets. I find excuses to go to the store - to practice my riding skills. I look forward to taking a training course in the spring to get my permanent endorsement. I baby this bike, and am faithfully watching the break in period limits per the owners manual. I find that with any vehicle if you treat it right, don't abuse it and follow the manufactures recommendations they last a LONG time. I hope my new Kawasaki follows suit.

    I was looking at the Honda CBR300 R. I think the reason I started looking at the Kawasaki Z 400 and Ninja 400 was that they are parallel twins. It seems like a twin would be smoother than the Honda single. And there is only an added 50 lbs. I wanted to see them compared to each other. Thanks. I want something light and not too much power. A bike that makes training in a class not a weight worry. Great at learning tight maneuvers.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 года назад +2

      The CBR300R was always realistically one of the best entry-points into motorcycling if you wanted something light, easy to handle, manageable power and just an all-round great option, without pushing for more performance. The newer CB300R is even lighter, which is only going to help there. There's definitely some advantages with the 400 twins, they rev harder and longer and there's a fair bit more power, but it just depends on what you're after as a rider!

      I swear by the Ventura Luggage, which is what's on the Ninja 400 in that cover picture. It mounts via two L-Brackets from the pillion peg mounting points and there's a cross bar under the licence plate holder in the tail (with no cutting or drilling).
      You can choose from the EVO-22 which I've got there, which is like a sporty mid-size day bag, or something larger Mistral bag which is a bit more touring orientated. There's also a really small EVO-10 bag if you want to go really sporty and once you've got that mounting system installed, you can buy the different bags (and sometimes racks) to suit. The bags and racks are universal too, so if you change bags you can just get a new set of L-brackets for your new bike and it'll all fit.
      I really hate riding with a backpack, where with the Ventura system I rarely notice there's any luggage fitted at all.

      Believe it or not, camera bags make amazing motorcycle bags for much cheaper. They’re typically well made to hold expensive gear, have segments and sections to organize camera gear which is good for keeping stuff from moving around while you ride and good strap setups.
      Personally on my bike I run a cargo net on my pillion and just leave it there all the time, and I wear a backpack for my daily essentials. For food, I add a soft cooler I strap around my neck and shoulder and rest in my lap in front of me, keeps my takeout hot or ice cream cold. Drinks and small items in my backpack and clunky items in the net. You’d be surprised how much you can carry comfortably with that setup.
      I typically ride with a shoulder strap tactical day bag with a low buckle, so I can in buckle it to throw over my shoulder and helmet and buckle back up, it’s fast, small and doesn’t catch wind too bad. Downside is in certain conditions it will migrate sideways, and need adjustment.. but that’s are enough that it doesn’t bother me, I like being able to stop, swing the bag around to the front and grab water, or a wipe for my helmet or check my phone and swing it back and tighten it.
      Hope this helps, I’ve been riding this setup for a few years and it works for me.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  5 лет назад +9

      Absolutely, they are great models to compare as they both fill the same niche. Apart from styling which is subjective, bigger differences are between the highly strung single-cylinder in the KTM and the parallel-twin in the Kawasaki which is still nice and punchy down low but has a larger rev range. Performance is similar on paper but how it's delivered is quite different.
      The KTM is hard to beat in the brake department, but the Z400 and Ninja 400 are really good as well. The Duke also has a pretty snazzy display. I'd normally think about the KTM as being the sportier option, and more aggressive in the handling department.
      Both are quite compact too.
      What kind of riding are you planning on doing, lots of commuting and heavy traffic, or more weekend riding or a mix. Also worth sitting on the bikes to see how they fit, as that varies hugely between riders and some people just find one bikes feel much better than another due to that. That and think about local dealer support.
      I hope that helps, but if you've got any specific questions about certain things ask away.

    I have a 2006 Suzuki SV650 naked I bought new then, the only mods are a bar-riser and a rather large fairing....it is getting old and worn out...like me, I am getting older and in my mid 50s (but I cannot replace myself, only maintenance)...This means to me that I do not need to progress to faster speeds (naked 1000's) so something like the Z400 would suit me just fine. Just add Kawasaki's own 'Meter Cover' fairing ($75) for better protection, the "ERGO-FIT EXTENDED REACH SEAT" ($200) which should fix the discomfort of the stock seat maybe some after-market frame slider and bar risers.....Which leads me to my next point.....If there was a Versys X-400 (currently the X-300 weighs in 22 lbs more than the Z400) which already brings the more comfortable seat, more upright ergos and a windscreen as standard it would be game over.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  5 лет назад +1

      Sounds like you well and truly got your money's worth out of the SV650! The Z400 is great fun, but may be a little more compact than the SV depending on your size, while a Versys X400 would really be an amazing addition to the Kawasaki range. I think the 400 powerplant has enough power and torque for everything, as long as you're not trying to race mates on 1000cc sportsbikes in a straight line!

    Thanks for your thoughts on this bike. I am a new rider. Lots of reviews say this Ninja 400 is one of the best starter bikes. However I am also thinking to get the Honda CBR650R directly so to save me from spending much more money on changing larger bike for the long run in the near future. Is that true new riders will miss lots of riding techniques if they started on 650cc instead of lower power bikes? Any experienced rider can share your thoughts if I should go for this 400cc bike or just jump to 650cc instead? Thanks and safe riding!

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  5 лет назад +4

      Honda's CBR650R is also a great machine, the big benefit on starting on something smaller is it makes those very early stages a little bit easier, but particularly if you want a machine that'll last a number of years without the need to upgrade the 650s are a really good option and many - like the CBR650R are aimed at being a good entry level option. The Ninja 400 offers pretty amazing performance for the capacity, but most of the 650s still offer a fair bit more torque. The smaller capacity machines also force you to be a bit more technical in some ways, since you don't have the speed, but it's more jumping straight on a 120hp+ bike that can work as a crutch for working on a lot of skills. But even that varies rider to rider here too.
      The 'best' bike really comes down to the rider at the end of the day, for some people it'll be the Ninja 400, others might find the CBR300R does everything they need, some swear by the MT-07 (/FZ-07) or one of the other 650s. There'll be people running around the inner city where a Grom would be best for them too.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  5 лет назад +1

      Well to be honest I got the Kawasaki before the new R3 came out and I wanted to teach my wife to ride a motorcycle. She liked the look of the Ninja which made for an easy choice.
      Between the two bikes now I'd say the big advantage of the Z400 is all that mid-range torque and obviously being a nakedbike and new it stands out. The resale on these should be pretty good as well, since it's a big step up from the Z300.
      The R3 on the other hand has an exceptionally smooth engine and gearbox and while it doesn't have the same low down torque it really does deliver like a mini-R6. It also has a more comfortable seat and if you're doing lots of highway riding it'll offer better wind protection with the fairings.

      I've seen the R3 do similar indicated numbers on the dash (192km/h-ish) when people have tested it and videoed and that was with the older model which was less aerodynamic, but it would come to speedo error to see which is actually fastest, since it could be 5-10% out at 200km/h.

      @@MotoJournoKris Have you ever tried the R3 or MT03? That engine is so smooth! I own a Yamaha MT03 and I am thinking to exchange it for the new R3 which has just arrived in my country. At the exact same time Kawasaki released the new Z400, but I am more inclined to stay with the Yamaha...but still doing my research... it seems that the brakes on the Kawasaki are much better.
      I personally know an owner of the Kawa Z300 which uses the bike daily and I have to say the bike does not look good after 3 years of use, but this can be his own fault, I do not know ,, anyway, here Yamaha R3 has 4 years warranty and Kawasaki only 2 years

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  5 лет назад

      @@42much1 Yep I've got a test up on the new R3 and a comparison with the Ninja 400, and I rode the MT-03 a few years ago. They are incredibly smooth, especially compared to the Ninja 400! The Yamaha 321cc powerplant is definitely a standout in that regard, it might not have the extra torque of the Kawasaki but its buttery smooth and has an exceptional top end.
      I'd agree the brakes on the Ninja have a fair bit more bite, I kind of liked the R3 brakes though, they required a little more force at the lever but there was still good power. If you wanted more bite, a different set of pads should sort it for you.
      A four-year warranty is also exceptional on a new bike, I haven't heard about that many problems with either, but it's great for peace of mind as well as resale, if you can pass the warranty on to a new owner!

    Why does the ninja have a 25 mph higher top speed? (I usually see 114 vs 91) are they tuned differently?

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  2 года назад

      I think it may just be a conservative figure for whatever reason, as far as the Z400, 100 mph should be achievable with 110 a fairly common claim from many riders as far as gps/corrected speedo readouts. There's a lot of variance between riders though, some are saying 100, others are saying 120! (mph), with rider weight, how tucked in they can get, possibly even mods all being a consideration that may be forgotten when those figures are shared.
      The aero advantage of the fairings on the Ninja is huge though as you get right up top, especially in situations where you can tuck right in and just go WoT on an essentially endless straight like some of the American highways.
      It's also possible there's variance between machines and markets, some of the US spec bikes were dyno'd above the quoted performance figure back when the Ninja first launched, so that may be true of the Z400 too. Other places there's the 35 kW restriction, which is basically 47 hp, which is less than what may be otherwise possible.

      @@MotoJournoKris thanks, I kept looking after my reply to your vid. I found a guy who had a cam on his dash and hit 114. It seemed flat, and lots of other similar claims are out there. @@trailguy Sometimes there can be a really big difference in gearing with the nakedbikes which really hurts their top speed, but gives them more low and mid-range, but I think it's the same with these models. There's the genuine Kawasaki option that they call a 'meter cover' fitted to the one pictured here, or PowerBronze also offer what looks like a taller screen again, more like a sportsbike screen. Puig seem to do one that looks more touring orientated, it's taller and more upright.

    I think the clutch is a bit too light. I even read in forums about owners burning their clutch due to the weak springs. And i noticed on stand still that the handle bars and the front wheel is not aligned (but its normal).

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  5 лет назад

      I've heard of people with the clutch issue online, and putting heavier springs in to fix it, however I don't think this is necessarily that common, for every person complaining online there's generally 100 people without an issue out riding, while in this case there's generally about five saying they have no issue. Plus the way an assist/slipper clutch works means much lighter springs can be used.
      It's possible it is just a batch of bikes with a specific issue, or being so light people are just abusing them without realising, particularly if they aren't adjusted properly - which especially applies to new riders. I'll have a look at my Ninja 400 and see how the wheel alignment looks though, no clutch issues so far with about 6000km covered.

      I am a new 400 owner (coming from a larger bike). I dont think you can go wrong either way but if you're looking for a long term bike I would recommend the 650. • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  5 лет назад +2

      The Ninja 400 is a good choice if you want the sportsbike, the Ninja 650 isn't quite as sporty, although it does offer the bigger bike feel and ergos. If you're in a market with restrictions on the beginner motorcycles, the 400 offers similar performance too. Otherwise the 650 will have a performance edge, but it's also significantly heavier. There's plenty of potential with the Ninja 400 though and it's a great place to learn sportsbikes from.

    • @heroictesticles6870
      @heroictesticles6870 5 лет назад

      Twin brake rotors vs a single brake rotor. What is more important than being able to stop fast? 650 is by far the better choice, regardless of power. It's also more powerful by almost 20 bhp.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  5 лет назад +1

      @@heroictesticles6870 Most riders probably won't see a significant difference between the 650 with dual disc brakes on the front and all the extra weight, over the Ninja 400 with the single rotor, and would probably find it much easier to stop as fast as possible on the 400. There's also no extra power in any market where they use A2 type restrictions (35kW), but there's a definite benefit in having more of a full power machine where those restrictions don't come into play - if you hold onto the 650 long term, or get a few more years before an upgrade. Plus the 400s 30% cheaper looking new vs new.
      If you could get the latest gen 650 secondhand cheaper than a 400, that'd be a good deal, while the older 650s are even heavier again.

      @ Small trade off for being able to rely on a functioning public health system, and getting more riders on the road as safely as possible. Sadly they don't make training mandatory for drivers who go through the same process, which just churns out people who think driving is a right, rather than a privilege and have non-existent driving skills that put everyone at risk.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  5 лет назад

      @ No need to get so offended, lol. The only thing I was equating to public health care is the fact there's some responsibilities attached to that right. In this case, motorcyclists are rightly recognised as being the most at-risk group on the road, and there's some additional responsibilities attached here, which include a graduated licencing scheme, requirement to wear a helmet and mandatory training, and that's all setup because accidents cost money. It's actually based on the American finding, where the US Airforce recognised they were losing a lot of highly skilled pilots to motorcycle accidents and decided training was the solution, which is a great alternative to just banning people from doing something risky.
      If you're more interested in espousing your political beliefs than motorcycles, take it elsewhere.

Bragging because you can go and buy a liter bike straight away as if it made any sense is just another way to see the moronic cult they have become. Where their personal freedom is more important than the safety of everyone else in the road. Let them have it, let them believe their country is the way to go. Let them eat the far right lies and believe they are the best of the best. It's the only thing they have after all.

      From a reliability and build quality perspective I haven't seen the Zongshen versions, but I'd want them to be significantly cheaper than a Ninja 400 to consider them. Something like the Ninja 400 here will have a great resale, which means when it comes time to upgrade you get a lot more of your buy-in back towards your next machine. With a lot of the really cheap machines after a few years they are worth almost nothing, and even if you're keeping it long term, you end up with a bike that ages very quickly.
      With that said I'd have to see and test the Zongshen in person to see if that would be the case.
