    Kawasaki’s Ninja 400 made big waves when it debuted for 2018, and over the last year, the little Ninja earned itself plenty of fans, from beginners to expert riders. But not everyone wants a sporty motorcycle with full fairings and clip-ons. That’s where the new Z400 comes in, a small naked version of the Ninja 400 with a personality all its own. So which is better, and for whom? Spurgeon makes the trek from snowy Philadelphia to sunny California for a first ride review of the 2019 Z400. While he puts the new model through its paces, Spurgie also looks back on his time riding the Ninja 400 to pit the new Z against its sibling.

      I wouldn't go as far as stating great, it's just inherent in what it is and has been this way for a very long time. Lower price and harder for a newb to let it get away from them are the two biggest benefits. Less complicated? I don't think that is much of a factor, any modern bike trends towards more complicated and yet it isn't necessarily any more complicated than the same thing except heavier and larger cylinders, etc. Then there's the argument, is fuel injection more or less complicated? Depends on what goes wrong, I for one am happy to not have a carb.

    • @E2Moto
      @E2Moto 5 лет назад

      @Andrew Humphrey Even with that, I still wouldn't worry about it. My 2016 DRZ400SM costs $23 a month with Geico with partial(90%) coverage, and my 2017 SV650 alone costs around $32 with the same coverage as my DRZ which totals to about $55 a month, also with Geico. Age also determines insurance rate, so if you're over 25, it gets cheaper, and insurance companies tend to be hard on sport bikes, but the Z400 is a naked bike so it should be cheaper.

    • @DPloiDEBT
      @DPloiDEBT 4 года назад +1

      Redwanovic the thing about being 5’8” is we fit on almost every bike. Go to the dealer and sit on bikes. Make sure to ask but when you do go don’t buy right away because sales person are trained to pressure you depending on the quota of the dealership. Better to research though. I went in well informed on the ninja/z400 because it’s a fairly cheap bike new (prices were dropped since it’s previous year model). I say watch videos between the R3/MT03, Ninja/Z400, and RC/Duke390 if you’re going for new since these bike are amazing bikes. You can actually find used ones too but just make sure they have service records and all that. Just my own tip. I’ve had a ninja 400 since February and it’s a fun bike

    Loving this bike for a sub 600cc motorcycle. KTM needs to get it's act together with that RC and Duke. They developed a 800 twin, they can develop a 400 twin with that beautiful 285° crank.
    Personally as an experienced rider who has had a little of everything and demoed a little of everything, the Ninja 400 would be my choice for a second bike, turned into a project. Suspension, brakes, power, controls, etc. would be a superb funster, 350 pounds and nearly 50 hp. Nothing else quite offers the same weight category while having good reliable power to boot.

    I am 5'11" 195 lbs and 53 y.o. I currently have a fun 2006 Suzie SV650 Naked which is almost done and would not mind 'going down' to something like this. The bars could be a little bit higher, maybe I would put a bar riser like I did on the SV. I would also put some rubberized foam/filler inside the bars to quell some of the excessive vibrations which may be a killer on touring rides. Finally a tall windshield for them touring rides, which can be long and fast on Florida Hwys.

    Still using that HORRID BS seat. The CB300R has a better seat, the G310R has a MUUUUUUCH more comfortable seat than ANY of the sub 500cc sporty style bikes. BUT, both the CB300R and the Z400/Ninja400 come in so low on the price tag that a nice comfy aftermarket seat (Sargent's gel seat) is available for just a couple of Franklins. GREAT review Spurge! Very well done (as always)

  • @ForTheOmnissiah

    My bottom-line is that naked bikes just look cooler to me. Where I am, every random normie buys a sportbike and thinks they're cool for having it, and rarely do people pick up a naked bike, they're quite rare of a sight here. I'll pick up a sport bike for the look and get basically the same performance, yet more comfort, as a sport bike of the same caliber.
    It's ironic that the naked bikes, supposedly catered toward people uncomfortable with sport motorcycles, get picked up more by more experienced riders. The performance to comfort ratio is by far the most important aspect to riders. Most people buying sport bikes don't fully grasp the discomfort of it for daily riding for leisure. Get a naked bike if you want a good time and a lot of power.

    Hi there, loved the video!
    Maybe you could help(really hope so), I'm riding a scooter for about 13 years. Feeling really comfortable on the road(especially in Thailand, crazy drivers), and finally about to buy my first bike now!
    Was planning to buy the z400, went for a test drive, and it was so fun! Stupidly I tested the z650 too, and was even more fun(powerful of course). Now have to say, both were about 10min ride, can't really understand from it (although surprisingly felt comfortable with both).
    After this long intro (sorry), do you think the z400 will be enough, and better learning curve? Or I'll get bored fast? Kinda like speed(at least in the city, still a scooter). And planning to go for out-of-town rides (6ft ,180lb).

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  4 года назад +1

      Honestly, either would be fine. I don't think you would tire of the Z400, but if you like the extra power of the Z650, then go for it. 13 years on a scooter should mean you aren't going to put the Z650 into a tree immediately. -DrewZilla
