I just bought a 2019 KTM Duke 390 as my first bike Wednesday... I have done every bit of research I could on all the suggested beginners bikes but it’s funny that the KTM was the bike I saw that got me itching for a motorcycle. I kept going back and forth on buying a used vs new, private or dealer, and ultimately decided on opting for the KTM when I got a hell of a deal. I got a 2019 KTM 390 Duke Brand new, zero miles for WTD price of $4500. It was a no brainer. I love the bike. I already added a wind screen as she’s going to be my commuter on most days. Gonna throw on a slip on later down the road but the biggest issue I am having is the seat height. I’m 5”6/5”7 chick and I am fine with everything BUT mounting. The Duke wants to sit up right and she likes to sit high. Problem is that when I mount her and go to place my right leg over she wants to buck you off and tip onto the right side. I’m buying a adjustable side stand which hopefully will resolve the issue and make it easier for me to get on with a better lean angle. If need be I will have her lowered as well. Point being... if you’re interested in the Duke and 5”8 and under, be prepared to do some mods to ride comfortably, especially if this is your first bike. I am have a lot of fun and regret nothing but I know I could’ve had them lower it and throw it into my purchase price. Oh well. Lesson learned. For the money, KTM knocked it out of the park. ABS, traction control, Slipper Clutch, Upside down Fork, LEDs, the display and of course the tech on this bike is sick. I love that it has Bluetooth and I can upload my directions/maps on to it, listen to music as well as answer calls, all at the tips of my fingers. The ability to turn abs off, or go supermoto, and the track feature is cool. It’s a great bike, highly recommend. I did test drive a Duke before buying but apparently they changed the seat height and I thought it was still 30”... well it’s really 32” on my years. Great review guys.
I am 5,10" and it was just right when i went to go sit on one today. I would imagine at 5,7" it would be a little challenging. Is this for first bike? I am really trying to convince my wife to let me buy it. I live in NYC and think it would be a great commuter.
Rob L hopefully im getting the duke too after all this coronavirus thing is over. I havent had the chance to sit on both of them, might do thta later too. My concern is seat height since I’m 6’3”. I hope it fit me well, really liking the duke so much..
hold on, the 390 has bluetooth and navigation? i thought it wasnt available on anything but the 1290. did you have to go to a dealer to unlock it? or did you get it like that from the factory? and did you have to pay anything extra for it? if so, how much?
Thanks for this detailed review .. I'm the same height as you so are you saying I will not be able to flat foot it? That's a big deal foe me as a new beginner..Kawasaki is great too low seat height cheap and reliable parts for the most part ...ABS for both bikes is great..I think I'll go with the z400 ..
@@Tavinho502 wrong. Bajaj shares Engine with KTM. Those engines are made by KTM but since Bajaj manufacturers KTM's bike there, they can use the engine for their bikes.

siwavong yodnoo that power will delivered completely different in the duke though, you will get better torque through the low and mid range early on, which in my opinion is better and more fun
The only weakness I have found with the Z 400 is the clutch springs. Slips bad in high rpm shifts. It only has 3 plates and 3 springs. __A set of Barnet springs for about $ 30 is the cure.
@@loganmw I actually changed out my springs. Didn't have to do the rod or bearing. Mine is a 2020 Z400 and beginning in model year 2020, Kawasaki used the shorter rod and thinner bearing, but still used the weak springs. Awesome review. Just bought the 18 Duke 390 yesterday part of left over stock from the dealer and paid $5300 CAD is equivalent to $4000 USD. I can’t wait to rip around with this little bike. :)
Good to see you guys again. I enjoyed the comparison. Based solely on the looks, KTM is a clear winner. Kawasaki's headlight and wheel design aren't my favorite.
Yes! What were Kawasaki thinking with that headlight design? If not for that, I would have picked the Z400 for it's reliability and the almost on par with Duke performance.
How can two people have such differing opinions? I don't know. For me it's the exact opposite, one of my reason to stay away from the KTM is it's horrible looks. Like seriously, that headlamp looks awful. Like really really awful. If I saw both of these on the streets, I think most people would say the Kawasaki looks much better
Been riding Sport bikes since 1965. Got up to a ZX-12 and Numerous Duc’s but as John said I have been downsizing for about 10 years and I have never had more fun than the KTM 390. Had to get it cause my wife hogged her old Duke 640 and I wanted to keep up. John and Egan have been my gurus since 35 cent gas.
I have a 2015 RC390 and race it I have had only small problems and the bike has nealy 30,000km on it. And here in New Zealand we pay $8 for 1 us gal of fuel
I agree with most of your comparison, but like most RUclips bike reviewers, you didn't mention the elephant in the room- reliability and cost of ownership! The KTM looks better, might feel a tad more torquey (not why I buy small cc bikes). The Kawi gives you a great bike that's far more reliable for less $$. Make that a Ninja 400 for me though! 🏍
Both are great bikes to be honest. I have friends who rip around the mountains with these bikes. The only thing I cannot be sure about is is the long term reliability of each bikes(for those who want to use these bikes all year round).
Well I'm surprised to see the pricing of these 2 bikes in the USA. Here in India, it's totally different. You get the kTm at the half of the price of the Kawasaki. The 390 Duke we have at around like $3700 and the Ninja 400 at around $7500. The Z400 isn't yet released here. Though there is a HUGE price margin gap between these two here. Great video as always. Ride Safe ✌️
I'm pointing out at the margin gap and the price of the Kawasaki. I don't exactly know why Kawasaki has increased the price tag of the Ninja 400 by around $2000 in India compared to the as Ninja 300 was but the price remains same in USA I know KTM is made in India and that's why it's priced low. Why wouldn't I know 😄 I'm from India too.
Just bought a 2023 KTM Duke 390 after contemplating between these two bikes for a month. Both great bikes but love the character of the KTM! So far I’m happy with my decision.
I owned the 390 for three years and 35k km sold to my friend. Now it has almost 60. This bike is super fun but it you want to put more than 50k don't buy it. It ages badly and starts to fall apart. Has major electronic issues. Engine leaks. Harsh engine vibes in 1 and 2 gear. also it's not comfortable .
I agree, I ride with a friend who has a 390 and he's had a lot of engine problems, (runs sweet when it is running well) but I want to know that I'm not going to break down when I go for a ride.
You must get shitty 390's where you live... my 2016 Duke 390 is a few km's short of 110 000km, maybe a third of that off road... Here in Africa our summer temps are regularly way over 40 degreess C - no overheating... and I'm a big bloke - 6'5 and 97kg... So far I have had to replace one set of sprockets, 3 sets of brake pads and countless tyres (I ride it like I stole it)... no engine issues, nothing has fallen off or broken, even with some bad offroad conditions...
I've put 800 miles on the bike in 5 months now and I Love my Kawasaki z400 it's so light and fast for a 400cc bike....I feel 25 again every time I Ride it
"The older you get, the smaller you like". After 35 years of riding that is so true. I think I'd still prefer a welterweight (550-750 cc) but I'm waiting until my daughter gets her Ninja 400 before I make my final decision. Living in the suburbs makes me appreciate torque over horsepower.
I’m 6’4” and i own the 2020 390 Duke and I love it. It’s plenty comfortable and punchy torque. If you core drill out the baffle/db killer in the exhaust it sounds a lot better too without being too loud/obnoxious. I love it. Awesome bike, looks cool, handles really well and is really easy to ride in traffic and on a faster windy road. The tyres are okay but they wear out very quickly so you’ll have to factor that in. I had to replace mine at 4,000km and I put on Michelin Road 6’s that are supposed to last a very long time have great grip in dry and wet.

Not sure. Would have to evaluate all the nuance differences between the Duke and RC. The RC is still behind the times cohesively. It's got a lot of ignored bits and pieces that need updated. I'd buy a Duke over the RC as things sit right now, easily. But, that sensibility factor in the back of my mind knowing that a Kawasaki motorcycle just isn't going to give any trouble and can be trusted for well past 100k miles with proper maintenance? Hard to get away from that, in spite the character differences. Just hope Japan gets off its proverbial butt and starts making interesting reliable machines akin to the good stuff Europe has been churning out in the last decade, especially in the sub 1000cc sport market. I've got a unmodified '18 MT-09 right now, and that 790 Duke is really calling to me. I'm hoping to get a test drive this year.
@@jonasv19 Which is very true. However, people using the RC390 for club racing are doing maintenance, and using their machines to the limit. It's exposed a lot of issues (wiring, overheating, head gasket, etc) with the RC. Ari Henning has a video on that bike in full race trim.
I have no problems so far and tons of looks. I have heard from other riders the newer ones are having far less problems. So I think it's worth it if it's a 2018/2019 since they fixed the problems on those.
One of the better reviews online. I like the way you guys leave subjective opinions out of the mix and don't just talk about yourselves... Refreshing. I'm an experienced rider and I USED to own a couple Yamaha 1981 RD350LCs. The power to weight ratio (read FUN Ratio) is right close to these subjects. I sold the Yamaha(s) because by the time you get into the power band, the law enforcement overkill will ensure you lose your license and there's just NO way to ride an LC legally.... I always liked the ER6N, which was the closest thing to the LC in pure "feel" a little bit buzzy and a little bit twitchy and just about the same performance. But I have always had a soft spot for the Duke 390 and this review points out the Duke's advantages. looking at the aftermarket power commanders and so forth on the Duke forums it would seem that after overcoming the emissions tuning of the bike, there will be an acceptable level of fun and performance in the Duke. I think I'll be purchasing a 390 real soon. I didn't hear anything convincing about the ABS and the quick shifter, although I don't believe that is stock in the US. Also, I don't recall you guys mentioning the slipper clutch.
390 Duke is so much more desirable if you can accept that it will likely have issues. One of many vehicles for me so the issues have been no big deal! Great back road ripper.
In India ktm price is low. ..it is half of that of a ninja 400..ninja will cost more than 7500 $ ...so Indians always prefer 390 and we have a lot of 390sss

Though KTM has some higher spec components, I think my choice would be for the Kawasaki. The twin cylinder versus the single may prove more reliable in the long term. As for me, I typically upgrade my bikes with aftermarket pieces anyway, so the addition of braided lines, or fork springs is a small thing.
Had the 2017 Duke 390 for 1 1/2 years , no serious problems apart from condensation on the TFT display which they replaced. no over heating issues, but as the bike runs lean due to EU emmision law I fit a Rapid Bike easy fueling module which helps keep the pot cooler and have notice the fan doesn't need to come on as much.. Oh and the bike is awesome 👍
As much as I love the KTM, and it is a great bike, I keep my motorcycles at least 4-5 years or longer I just don’t trust the KTM long term. Every Kawasaki I’ve owned has been absolutely perfect in regards to reliability, although I’m sure that could be said for most Japanese bikes. Currently I have a 2005 Kawasaki Z1000 and it does everything I need it to. I can’t imagine getting another bike in the next 5-10 years, that’s how much I love and trust it. So my 390 will do 6yrs now (the first version) and the engine still performs well, getting a good mileage of 28-30kmpl and changed the sprocket ONCE... No other engine, coolant, suspension issues and i usually ride like a hooligan....have done 65k and the bike still touches a top speed of 100mph with little vibration(because you know the single cylinder) and most of all the only 2 times i had to get it serviced for parts was because i crashed !!! The only thing I’m hesitant on the KTM is the color. Green is my #1 in almost everything but as a first bike I’m having a hard time finding anything better for the price over the Duke 390. If anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear them.
I bought my white 390 Duke new in 2020. I did the de-cat, derestricted air box cover and a Coober piggyback ECU on a stock muffler. Engine cage, bark busters, and sliders. These mods turned it into a different bike. It now redlines just under 10k. I giggle every time I get on it but with that said, it's so light that passing 18 wheelers on the highway at 75-85mph can be like going into a wind-tunnel sideways. Also, I do regular maintenance on it and have had -0- issues in 6000 miles. KTM >> READY TO RACE
"Lightweight Rippers" SHOCK!! Motorcycle stopped using the title "beginner bikes" or "entry-level motorcycles" Kawasaki really missed their opportunity with the 400 when they decided NOT to use a 270° firing interval. Can you imagine? A 400cc twin sounding like a Ducati? Like a high strung MT-07?
Totally agree. I test rode the duke 390 and bought a ninja instead myself. Saw the Z at the dealer and can say that stripping it down to a Z it needs character to make up for the lack of fairings and sporty look - a great sound would be perfect here
@@vinerod12 In terms of quality, I think the Kawasaki is better. If you're buying new and don't mind the possibility of giving the Duke in for repairs under warranty, just go with what feels right - test ride them at a dealership to see what fits you. At these prices it's no brainer for me to choose Z400!! More HP, torque, reliability, fun, top speed, nibble and peace of mind. Oh the Z400 exhaust sound is so addictive.

It's PERFECT ... only thing I would change - it would be the bank because it's hard ... out this is WONDERFUL ...
KTM has a better looking design and is more fun to ride in the hills/canyons, but listening to its flatulent sounding exhaust blowing raspberries gets old really quickly.
I’ve had a test ride on the Svartpilen 401 and a Z400 as a rental for a few days. The Z wins hands down for the quality feel and more relaxed nature of the twin.
If you like spending a lot of time with your mechanic at the shop and on the internet figuring out how much your next maintenance and problem will cost then I highly recommend the Ktm! If you like riding your bike and simple maintenance and bulletproof reliability go with Honda Suzuki or Kawasaki.
Oh, I sat on the Duke and couldn’t get off of it fast enough. It was incredibly uncomfortable. The two bikes that I was having a tough time deciding between were the Yamaha RT 03 and the Kawasaki Z 400 and after driving both of them back to back, the Kawasaki for me was the clear winner, and I bought one this morning. I am 6 feet tall 185 pounds and was much more comfortable on the Kawasaki. Also, the Kawasaki had a much more forgiving and gentle clutch. Hope this helps someone deciding which bike to buy.

Duke 390 is more expensive than Z400 there? Wow Z400 is almost twice as expensive compared to Duke 390 in India.

@Bernd DasBrot duke has 43hp while z400 has 45
@Bernd DasBrot for me on most websites i see 43, also consider this
Duke
43hp at 9500 rpm
37nm at 7000 rpm
Z400
45hp at 10000 rpm
38nm at 8000 rpm
1 cylinder bikes have harder time reaching top speeds
siwavong yodnoo that power will delivered completely different in the duke though, you will get better torque through the low and mid range early on, which in my opinion is better and more fun
Duke: issues on engine but fun to use.
Z400: fast acceleration, much reliable and good for long ride.
The only weakness I have found with the Z 400 is the clutch springs. Slips bad in high rpm shifts. It only has 3 plates and 3 springs. __A set of Barnet springs for about $ 30 is the cure.
Please send me more info. Mine slips when I get on the gas at 5000 rpm or more.
@@rebman5150 like he said, barnet clutch springs. I got a set for my z400 because i’m having the exact same issue

Z400 is super refined, its a twin, parts r cheaper, doesnt need much maintenance , dpendable, reliable.....on the other hand! Ktm looks much sexier than the kawi.
Forgot to talk about acceleration and top speed? If I recall, the Z400 is slightly quicker which may tip the choice back to the Kawi.

Good to see you guys again. I enjoyed the comparison. Based solely on the looks, KTM is a clear winner. Kawasaki's headlight and wheel design aren't my favorite.
In terms of looks, the 390 Duke is way up
Yes! What were Kawasaki thinking with that headlight design? If not for that, I would have picked the Z400 for it's reliability and the almost on par with Duke performance.
Get some vinyl wrap in classic kawi green and cover that orange up and you get the best of both worlds!
But for reliability not even close.
Ryan O'Connor 1 gal= how many liters
I feel for you. Here in South Florida gas is $2.20 /87 RO and $2.80 /92 RO USD per gallon US. ( 3.7854 Liter is one / US Gal. )
The turn indicators are huge on this KTM, the Duke 390 we get else where has small LED units 🧐

I’ve had my 390 Duke for 6 months and haven’t had a problem as of yet. We’ll see after 2 years (like everyone is saying here).

Kawasaki really missed their opportunity with the 400 when they decided NOT to use a 270° firing interval. Can you imagine? A 400cc twin sounding like a Ducati? Like a high strung MT-07?
Totally agree. I test rode the duke 390 and bought a ninja instead myself. Saw the Z at the dealer and can say that stripping it down to a Z it needs character to make up for the lack of fairings and sporty look - a great sound would be perfect here
@@180FiftyFive kawasaki is better in terms of quality than duke?
@@vinerod12 In terms of quality, I think the Kawasaki is better. If you're buying new and don't mind the possibility of giving the Duke in for repairs under warranty, just go with what feels right - test ride them at a dealership to see what fits you. The Duke is a very fun bike, but too small and light for me, feels a bit like a rocket bicycle. The Kawasaki feels more refined, controlled and substantial.
Well these aren’t beginner bikes so calling them that would be incorrect.
@@gprcamp1435 That's the point. But my comment clearly alludes to the fact MO and other publications have used just that terminology in recent years.
Great review guys. All of a sudden I'm surfing craigslist for KTM 390s.
Awesome video guys really it felt more real than our Indian reviewers and especially the background was what you call lit AF 🔥🔥🔥
One day we'll get to the chassis from the KTM and the powertrain reliability of the Kawasaki. That would be a dream bike to own.
Always big 4 Japanese bikes for me for the reliability and fun! Had Duke 390, it was too stressful for me to ride, sold it.
Why was it stressful?
No matter what these reviewers says, I'll go for Japanese bikes all the way. For me, I always choose reliability.
Kawi may be reliable but when u are on the KTM it feels just awesome...pulls hard..handles like a dream...and it looks waaay cooler than Z400...
At these prices it's no brainer for me to choose Z400!! More HP, torque, reliability, fun, top speed, nibble and peace of mind. Oh the Z400 exhaust sound is so addictive.
They need to make adventrure Kawasaki 400 !!!!!!!
With comfort
Versys 400x; can't see why they wouldn't.
@@kleinbottled79 That's what I'm waiting for. Big call for dual sport and that 400 would be welcome change from current 300 Versys. Would make for a better distance rider on highways to get where your exploring off road.
I think it will come soon.. But in the meantime check out the 2019 Honda cb500x :)
KTM is looking pretty appealing
I'd pick the kawi any day. I've had horrible reliabillity issues on my rc125 and considering the fact that the 390 is built in the same factory i'd rather have the kawi.
KTM. is listening and also making changes as requested by its customers, and this makes it win every type of buyers. ... I LOVE KTM ... I have a DUKE 390 - 2015 and I can say it's a war tank ... It's PERFECT ... only thing I would change - it would be the bank because it's hard ... out this is WONDERFUL ...
KTM has a better looking design and is more fun to ride in the hills/canyons, but listening to its flatulent sounding exhaust blowing raspberries gets old really quickly.
Better-looking? ...I suppose, but it's not saying much when the Kawi is so utterly horrendous to look at with its putrid design.
Nice thorough comparison. Keep it up!
Did KTM fix their issues in regards to the reliability of these bikes? Great review.
I wonder, the RC390 has a legendary appetite for head gaskets.
For 2017 Ktm said they went over all the week points and fixed them.
Yes they certainly did. New gen 390 twins are reliable and practical to ride
@@theindianspeedster8229 true brother
I’ve had a test ride on the Svartpilen 401 and a Z400 as a rental for a few days. The Z wins hands down for the quality feel and more relaxed nature of the twin.
They threw around some specs but didnt mention seat heights or their own height for comparison. One of my biggest pet peaves on reviews.
I agree! Plus, short riders are going to be drawn more to these smaller bikes, but the testers always seem to be between 5'10" and 6' 2"
Troy where did you get your riding outfit it looks really cool, is it CE rated?
Fun fact : Kawasaki's ex is now dating KTM. Bajaj from India.
Bajaj owns KTM brother...get your facts right!
@@varunkhare1 Bajaj has 51.7% stake in KTM, not 100 %.
@@tamilturbo2647 Yes brother...in shares...and that means they own majority of the company...
@@varunkhare1 Bajaj owns KTM, good joke.

Comes down to the color for me. Hate orange and green is my favorite color 👊
