Great video. But my Saturn S series 2002 stock had an ultra flimsy headliner base. It was just foam fiberglass glued to flimsy cardboard-like fiberglass which made it terrible to remove and I ended up damaging the base board fiberglass quite a bit. If I would have used a metal wire brush like you were doing, it would have likely caused more damage. So I used a metal scraper tool and a drill with a nylon brush. Two of these side end pieces of the fiberglass backboard also came off. Tried to superglue it back together, but it got really hot and nearly started a fire. What material do you use: backed with polyethylene or with polyuretane? Where do you buy material? How much per linear foot (5 ft width)
Hello West, I use foam backed headliner material, The only one my supplier has carried for my 43 years. Keyston Bros. Length depend on the job. Every car and truck are different. I just measure the top of the roof from the windshield to the back window. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery foam can be polyurethane (yellow, open bubbles, the original one was like this) or polyethylene foam, white/colorless, shiny, closed bubbles. PE lasts much longer than PU. In the past I used PE-backed from Joann. Now you can only get PU, looks like...
@@west_park7993 Hello West, The automotive headliner I get from my upholstery supplier is definitely an open-cell foam. Can be a light beige or dark grey color. I looked on my sample chart for the specs, but there are no specs listed. Please keep liking and watching!
Can you recommend a rattle can spray adhesive for us diy types?
Hello Jim, I am so sorry that I cannot recommend any spray can adhesives for headliners. They are ALL unreliable. You are still better off at least applying contact adhesive with a brush if you are not using a spray gun. Please keep liking and watching!
Thanks! It’s been awhile since I’ve had a contact “buzz”. Guess it’s time for another one. Maybe better ventilation this time.

My headliner fabric was hanging from just the front edge of the headliner. I removed the headliner from the vehicle then the fabric stripped away from the foam backing very easily. The foam is not breaking down. Can I glue the new headliner fabric to the old foam and still get a good result?
Hello Paul, I would say that you need to continue to get rid of the old foam that is the problem to begin with. Use a good wire hand brush to strip it away. Be sure it is all gone before putting your new headliner fabric and do not use a spray glue from a spray can. Only use a contact adhesive even if you have to spread it by brush. Please keep liking and watching!
Where can I buy the glue ?
Google maps "Upholstery Supplier" In your area.
Que. how long can one leave the adhesive in the gun?
Hello Bruce, I leave my contact adhesive in the gun all the time. The only thing is, in the summer if left in and not replenished after a few weeks, it will be very thick because of the heat. Please keep liking and watching!

Hello Javier, Yes you can use a brush to apply the contact adhesive. Thanks for watching!

What size spray gun tip should you use to spray glue correctly to get coverage?
Hi, I have never changed from the stock tip that the Harbor Freight Paint gun comes with. It sprays the contact adhesive glue just fine.
@@oldschoolautoupholstery thanks, I have the same one so glad to know.
@@dewholdingsllc1050 Yep, it should work just fine!
Super great advice
Did you use foam and fabric for the replacement headliner? What is the result if you just use fabric and no foam? Thanks for the video.
Hello Roadster, Only use foam backed headliner fabric. Must have foam or it will look bad. Please keep liking and watching!

Ohhhhh nooooo! That looks really messy and difficult. I thought that I could just give it a squirt and stick it back up. Nice job tho ❤

Hi, how long need the glue dry before installation? Thank you
Oh yea, That is a trick. When gluing foam together with contact adhesive, you do not let the glue dry. See what I mean? Only when gluing something to a hard item do you let the glue dry for 5-10 minutes. Thanks for commenting and please keep watching!
How did you remove the headliner?
Hello Dionte, I remove a headliner by removing everything that is holding it up. Every car and truck is different. Thanks for watching!

Hello Jordan, Only use contact adhesive also known as contact cement. Please keep liking and watching!

Causing the headliner to look bulgy in certain areas. Can i use fiberglass to go over the cracks to reinforce the headliner. Any input appreciated brother.
