Which let them double performance each generation leading up to the 5870, which dominated performance and only cost $380 at launch. They couldn't quite make the same magic happen with GCN, so nVidia was able to catch up over the next few years, with notable exceptions like the R9 290X, which matched the GTX Titan in performance but cost half as much.
      RDNA is AMD hitting the reset switch again. With RDNA 2 greatly improving power efficiency, it's looking like a repeat of the Terascale reboot progression might be on the way. We'll have to see how big Navi stacks up to Ampere later this year.

      Kepler was a TERRIBLE uArch! It was Nvidia's transition to fully unified clocks - where with Fermi and earlier, shaders were double pumped (clock rate was 2x GPU clock) - and Fermi was MUCH easier to program for. The biggest problem with Kepler was its AWFUL Memory Crossbar system, second to that was the TERRIBLE setup for the Kepler SMs, with 192 CUDA per SM but just ONE Dispatch processor- it was REALLY very hard to program for max performance out of Kepler.
      Maxwell fixed all of this. No more memory crossbar setup, the SM was changed to 128 CUDA sub divided into 4 groups of 32 CUDA each with TWO dispatch processors, for 8 dispatch processors per SM!
      Pascal is simply Maxwell on speed. Sure there were a couple MINUSCULE upgrades, mostly smaller features. In the end though, Maxwell should perform 1 to 1 with Pascal when the same number of shaders and ram are run at the same speeds.

    Man, Kepler is really getting put out to pasture in a game like DOOM Eternal. Recall if you will the colossal R9 290X vs GTX 780 Ti battles of years gone by. In DOOM Eternal, the R9 290 (non-X, it should be noted) is ~268% faster on average, and 258% faster for the 99th percentile frametime. None of the Kepler-based GPUs put out anything like what I'd consider competitive performance, with even the top of the stack GTX 680 4GB from the 600 series getting crushed by the HD 7790 and HD 7870, neither of which were even remotely in the same ballpark in 2012. The GTX 780 is somehow slower than the GTX 680 4GB. Something weird is going on, it might be VRAM related and it's almost certainly partly due to having zero driver optimisation, but wow.
    Hell, the Hawaii GPUs (R9 290/X and R9 390/X series) are topping the performance of the GTX 980 in this game. It's not a huge margin, but it's there and fairly impressive given Maxwell was such a huge step forward from Kepler (and it really shows in a game like this).
    I'm a little surprised the R9 380 and R9 380X did quite as well as they did, being a bit faster than the R9 280X/HD 7970 GHz. It seems some of the architecture improvements in GCN 3 are being put to good use in a game like this. Even the R9 Nano shows a decent jump over the R9 290 and R9 390, and that's showing arguably worst case performance for Fiji. That said, you'd be pretty happy if you bought a Tahiti based card back in 2011/2012, as the HD 7950 and HD 7970 are keeping up pretty nicely in DOOM Eternal, even if it's at the low preset.

      I guess 560 2gb for 1050 & 560 4gb for 1050ti seeing as that's how even the xx50 cards were released with 2gb & 4gb variants.Also given the fact that this game is on vulkan which always runs better on AMD those results are normal.

      Not really, its just Vulkan being Vulkan.
      Vulkan is based on Mantle, an AMD-supported API from almost a decade ago that was supported by GCN from the beginning.
      Vulkan only started becoming relevant years later and Nvidia only started caring with Turing.

    • @twilightravens9798
      @twilightravens9798 4 года назад

      Well I mean Nvidia used to do like AMD and include all the features including the kitchen sink, they stopped with Kepler because the die size and power consumption figures were getting massive (look at the GTX 480 and 580, some of which had 3 - 8 pin connectors) so they then dropped a lot of features for a smaller more efficient die but with the cost of being not very future proof i.e. GTX 600 and 700 series. AMD on the otherhand still includes the kitchen sink R9 290X with its massive 512 bit memory bus and 300W tdp, Vega with its almost astronomical 400W tdp and even the R9 FuryX. Nvidia didn't intentionally gimp them (well its a debatable thing really), it was just a side effect of making a more efficient architecture, which isn't to say Vega, Hawaii and even Fiji were inefficient its just they were designed for a low overhead api like Mantle, Vulkan and DX12 which were not commonplace like DX11, which was where AMD struggled in the graphics department. Turing on the otherhand is a return to a more Fermi like design which is why its so much more expensive, because the die is massive and it has more than just normal rasterization cores (cuda cores) but the inclusion of tensor and rtx cores.
      Another example would be their CPU, when they released FX they expected games to become more multicore aware with DX11, but that was proven to not really be true until DX12 and the like, developers always lag 3-6 years behind on features, which AMD plans ahead, which thus far is debatable whether it bites them in the ass or not, because yes while it does make the consumer happier that they can keep their gpu longer, but they also want you to buy a new one so they can make money, because they aren't making money by supporting something several generations old anymore.
      Not claiming i'm a fanboy of either because I own from both teams, its just Nvidia puts out on the market what is needed now, vs AMD putting out what will be needed, with the exception of Ray Tracing. I upgraded from a R9 290X to a 1080 then to a 1080 ti because that's what was a compelling upgrade for me.

Do you remember when DX12 came out and it became apparent that all the current NVIDIA GPUs do not support it thus tanking performance in DX12 titles (for back then it was just Ashes of the Singularity)? The first architecture from the green team to properly support async compute was Pascal but only Turing truly caught up with GCN in terms of DX12 and Vulkan performance
