The kid isn't even interested in becoming a chunin and he ended up to be the first who get to be one
They said the people in the tournament could be promoted into chunin even if they lose, as long as they display the skills that make them worthy. Shikamaru was running out of chakra so it was better to give up there rather than risking to lose. This decision also contributed to him becoming chunin.

The reason they promoted him to Chunin was because he clearly won the battle, he just didn't proceed with it further.

This is the fight that made Shikamaru one of my favorite characters.

He's amazing. Reminds me of his strategy against Hidan later on. I mean... Take an Akatsuki member all by himself is already goat , but he barely managed to plan defeat 2 of them at once. I mean if Kakuzu didn't have several extra life (a fact Shikamaru couldn't predict) , Shikamaru's plan would have take them both down.

Nah... There's nothing in Shikamaru's arsenal that could take out Kakuzu. If Kakashi didn't follow them, the whole team would have die early.
@@chickenchop9757 but he did kill kakuzu once tho. by making hidan stab one of his hearts through the ritual. Matter of fact, the only reason kakuzu survived was because he had multiple lives, and shikamaru didnt know that. Had kakuzu been someone else, lets say, Itachi or something, Shikamaru's plan would have ended with both akatsuki's dead.

Out of everyone in the nine rookies only Shikimaru really paid attention to the Hokage's explanation of what the tournament was for. All he had to to was to show his skills in a meaningful way to impress enough visitors. Since he's already shown his one true ninja skill (The shadow capture) all he had to show was that he'd thought of a way to win. There'd be no point to showing the same thing in more matches.
He doesn't have to win the fight himself, just show that he could guide others into the same position
Shikamaru = The one kid that doesn’t study for exams but still gets 100% regardless.
I miss the era when Naruto battle is about combining unique ninjutsu and genius battle startegy (not only for Shikamaru, but nearly every early battle in naruto using genius battle tactics and unique ninjutsu technique)
It was all good till strategy stopped working.
Last time it was used against third raikage by naruto.
But tell me can u defeat madara by strategy?? Lol they all just got beaten badly without even getting the time to think.
@@namahshivaay5266 thats my point is Nowdays naruto battle is just like watching dragonball or any other shounen anime (you know just battling someone with his/her OP fire power or any other OP ability). Doesn't mean it bad tho, but I just miss the when startegic battle was more dominant in early naruto (after all i think that was a unique selling point for naruto at the time)

Let's not forget about Sarada and Mitsuki figuring out Boro's powers and weaknesses, then Sarada destroying his core.
Boruto also defeated Jugo through strategy.
For the battle between Jigen vs Naruto and Sasuke, Isshiki actually won due to better knowledge of the enemy, while the enemy knew nothing about him, and also because Sasuke made 2 big mistakes: used his Susanoo against a Kaguya-level opponent, when he should have remembered that Kaguya smashed his Susanoo without any effort, and also wasted his Chakra on someone that can absorb Ninjutsu when he casted Amaterasu.

Before this fight I used to consider Shikamaru a weak side character who just got lucky to get weak opponents to fight and Shino as some Strong mysterious guy. But during sand attack when Shikamaru was acting that he was under Genjutsu then I realised this guy will be going places.

Here's my impression of the end of this fight:
*Temari:* "Unbelievable! The purpose of the parachute wasn't to catch me, it was to make me retreat closer to the hole created by Naruto in his fight with Neji, which he could then use to pass his shadow underground and take me off-guard! Who is this guy!?"
*Kurenai:* "This kid is something else. As a strategist, he really is a force to be reckoned with."
*Asuma:* "Most people would think the parachute was a simple attempt to extend the range of his jutsu. But Shikamaru is the kind of ninja who always thinks 10 moves ahead. He was playing her the whole time, making her move into the optimal position to take advantage of the terrain. And now, he has complete control over her with his Shadow Possession Jutsu. There's nothing left for her to do. Checkmate!"
*Sakura:* "You mean to tell me the moment he launched that parachute, he was already planning to use the hole from Naruto's fight with Neji? I never realized Shikamaru was so amazing!"

You forgot two things, when Shikamaru was planning this, he had somewhere in the fight decided to make Temari his wife and call his son Shikadai - Sincerly yours - Masashi Kishimoto

If Naruto wouldn't be the main character and wouldn't be this ridicilous broken at the end of the series, Shikamaru would be better suited actually. The Hokage is not only about who's the strongest shinobi or who has the most respect, many people misunderstand that. There's actually a major misunderstanding that Naruto himself has about this position.
