So grateful for your help. Going to take a deeper look at your paid courses in the future. Really need help with that frightening masking 😊 but will view your free tuts first. Thank you!

This was incredible. I have had Affinity for years and have never really learned how to use it. I kept going back to Photoshop just because I was used to it and too lazy to learn a new program but I’m tired of paying for PS when I already own Affinity Photo and Designer and it will do the same things. Wish I had found you sooner. Definitely signing up for your course.
I tried to do the same in Affinity Designer but couldn't find a way, but imported the File into Affinity Photo and followed your Tutorial and it was perfect..Thanks..
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I'm 100% digitally challenged. Not ideal for an artist, but you have shown me they way. I will now have tea towels of my designs :D
The "lateral joining" is amazingly simple. Thank you. However, is there a similar "strategy" for opposing corners of the pattern? The plane geometry solution for the hypotenuse didn't end well for me.
Nice. Another direct approach (if you're not interested in creating a re-usable tile asset) is to turn on Snapping and Force Pixel Alignment, then do the following: • draw out a square shape with whole-pixel dimensions directly in one's working document, • use any combination of vector & pixel art as child layers inside this square to build a pattern tile design, • then rasterize the result, • select the rasterized layer and choose New Patter from Layer Selection. I wish Affinity would design the Pattern Layers in such a way that one could drag vector and pixel art into the Pattern Layers as scalable and re-positionable child layers. That would be a quicker and more intuitive way to build patterns.
Thanks for the alternative workflow! And I agree with your suggestion, that would make patterns much easier to work with. Hopefully they can add that feature at some point.
@@ArtsyLadyCrafter Well, if your working document units are in millimeters or inches, or some other unit of measurement other than pixels, it's possible that you might draw a square out to something like 98 mm x 98 mm that doesn't correspond to whole pixel dimensions. If that happens and your pixel dimensions are fractional (e.g., 98.145 px x 98.145 px) your pattern tile will have anti-aliased, partially transparent edge pixels, and then your pattern will show a thin white grid, which you don't intend. You can explicitly enter pixels values in the Transform Panel, even if your document units are in inches. Alternatively, you can reassure yourself by temporarily changing your document units to pixels before you draw out your box.
@@AffinityRevolution I just noticed that there is an "Open as New Document" button in the contextual toolbar when you have a pattern later selected. This will open the pattern tile you've created for your patter layer in a new document, which you can then save and name as a reusable pattern tile asset. So, I guess it is possible to build a pattern directly in one's working document and save the tile out as a separate asset.
Hi. This was a great video- it was the first time I have ever used Affinity photo and using this and another of your tutorials I was able to cut out one of my illustrations from a photo and make it in to a pattern, and it worked first time. Can I ask, as a complete beginner, is the background to the pattern tile and the final repeat pattern transparent or white? I couldn't work it out for myself with my complete lack of knowledge! I used a png file to make the original image. Thanks
That's great you are already getting the hang of Affinity Photo! 😊 In this video, my background was white. If you want it to be transparent, you need to turn on "transparent background" when making a new document (it's an option over on the right side). Then export your file as a PNG to keep it transparent.
There is a workaround for the iPad. See this page: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/134810-new-pattern-layer-from-selection-on-ipad-where-is-it/&tab=comments#comment-743244

Thank you so much for this video - so timely! I've been having so many problems with using a repeating pattern in Publisher the last day or so. Using the pattern as a tile left lines where the tiles join and trying to use it as a bitmap fill instead looked fine but wouldn't show up when exported as a PDF (seems to be a bug). Took me 2 minutes to create it like this in Photo instead and copy it across to solve the problem. :)

There isn't a smooth edges option for that tool, but you could use the Flood Select tool to make a selection, and then press Refine up at the top. That will soften the edges. Then apply a mask. 😊

Thanks so much for sharing; I would never have found that transform panel without you! If you don't mind me asking, can this method introduce visible edges on elements that cross the seam because of imperfect interpolation algorithms? For example, the default bicubic interpolation method considers a 5x5 grid of pixels from the original image for each resulting pixel of the transformed image, meaning some pixels that are not adjacent to the original pixel are being included. Does this include pixels on parts of the layer which are no longer within the canvas bounds, and if not, is there a way I can force it to do so?
Sorry, I'm not sure. That's getting a little more technical than I know about... 😅 You could try asking on the Affinity forums though. I bet someone there knows the answer. forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
UPDATE: I recreated a tile using my same 2 images but duplicated them less so the pattern has more white space. When I created my new pattern document it was fine. No distortion. It shouldn't matter how many images you have in the pattern, should it? The pattern should be able to be made as busy as you want, right? BTW, I even tried using the bitmap fill feature on the old tile and the same distortion happened. I have a strange problem that maybe someone can give the answer to. Used my own 2 images in the design, duplicated them more times than Ally did in her tile, so my tile is more busy. When I paste the tile into any size new doc, one of my images is distorted, though it's not distorted in the tile. In every line where that one image appears in the pattern, it is sliced horizontally into 3/4 and 1/4 and the slices are slightly sheared, no matter how I resize the pattern. I went back to the tile, deleted the problem image and made a new pattern and another one of the images had moved into that space and is now similarly distorted. 😠 I made a new pattern using Ally's images, duplicating her design as close as I could and the problem is not there. What could it be? Thanks.
Wow, that's so strange! I'm not sure why that's happening. I'd post your question on the official Affinity forums. I bet someone there knows the answer. forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
