  • In this tutorial, we will learn about a new Compound Object called ShapeMerge. This object will help you to imprint/Stamp a 2D shape onto a surface, also to cut out the 2D shape from that surface, also, you can invert the cutout operation. This is a useful tool if you like to create a road on a land/landscape or cut out a text, or any other closed shape pattern from a surface.

    man, this is exactly I was looking for. I was wondering about the point of all these old compound objects in 3ds max and their future with new modifiers being pumped out by Autodesk developers that will render them useless. Is the Pro cutter still needed now with the new Boolean modifier for ex? Im also wondering about this Shape merge and if its functions will be made in the future development of the same Boolean.

      Glad you liked it! :) i need to investigate the procutter more, and check out the new tools to give a more accurate answer.

      Thanks. I'm using 2023 now. I'll get to the 2024 soon. I heard it has nice new features, but still too busy to install it and try it.

    Hey, hi.
    When I'm doing the Shape Merge I can't select my text at all. I'm using the 2024 version. Can you give some help, please?
    Thank you so much for the tutorial.

      Hi, so you're selecting a 3D mesh, then clicking the ShapeMerge tool, and you click on Pick Shape button, and you cannot select the text? is that what's happening? did you try with different shapes other than the 2D text? Remember if the text shape has some modifier on it will not work.

      @@MiledRizk Honestly, I haven't tried with different objects and my text doesn't have any modifier, is just a simple 2D text. My object, on the other hand, does have modifiers but I think it's what we are suppose to be doing!? 😅 I'll try with a different object to see what happens. Thank you so much for the reply.

      @@MiledRizk I'm trying with just a simple box without any modifier and it's the same thing. Can't select my text.

      @@unyuu126 I'm currently still on Max 2023. Did you try with a different shape other than a text? The 3D object can have modifiers, only the 2D shape cannot, unless it's a modifiers that keeps it as a 2D shape like the Edit Spline modifier

      @MiledRizk No, I didn't. I'm just starting with MAX, and I'm modelling a simple soap and I wanted to add like the brand name on the soup but yeah, not happening. I'll try with a 3D object then to see what happens. I'm really sorry to bother you with such simple struggle, and I'm really thankful for your replies.

    after i shape merge and the shape is now where i need it when i convert it to editable poly some lines from the shape that i merged disappear ..helpp

    • @MiledRizk
      @MiledRizk  5 месяцев назад +1

      It's hard to know without seeing the geometry, but, what if you try to convert it to Editable Mesh, does it work better? also, the 3D geometry that you're trying to project onto, does it have some subdivisions where the 2D is projected, or it's just one polygon? if it's only one polygon, this will make it a bit hard for Max to create the Edit Poly topology. These are some quick ideas, but there are maybe other things.

      @@MiledRizk the shape that i merged is from autocad could the problem's source be that?

    • @MiledRizk
      @MiledRizk  5 месяцев назад +1

      Just make sure it's a clean shape, no edges overlapping, closed, no self-intersections anywhere,... You can draw a 2d shape in Max and do a test to see that it's the autocad shape that's causing the issue.

      Does your shape have modifiers? If so you should remove them.

      @@MiledRizk i have turned my shape to a 3d object with no modifiers, the reason is because when i import my shape as a vector from illustrator, it is invisible until i turn it to an editable poly, i dont know if its something wrong there..

    • @MiledRizk
      @MiledRizk  Год назад

      The shape has to be a 2D object. You cannot use a mesh.
