I suspect a lot of people couldn't tell what the line was, or didn't know what the line referred to (flipping over a single record to play that back 'not hit' side). I've seen BOC a small bunch of times and I've always remembered that for a while there while playing this tune Buck would mime flipping a record using his hand as the record while he carefully enunciated the line. So I guess they knew that the line was a mystery to some of their listeners. Fun song, and Buck NEVER failed to impress me with his playing every time I've seen them.
They're stone classics and I'd never dispute that. But at the same time they're also two of the least interesting songs in their catalog and I think that speaks volumes about the band. BOC at their creative peak were a weird, clever band with monstrous musicianship.
@@dmn23 yeah, I’d agree - their commercial songs are the most atypical BÖC offerings although Godzilla is just pure unadulterated rock. I’d always been drawn to their esoteric, mystical lyrics and stuff like Black Blade where Bloom collaborated with Michael Moorcock and they explored sci-fi, conspiracy and sword & sorcery themes, some dark controversy with songs like Joan Crawford, Unknown Tongue - just sublime. Their most popular song of all, Reaper, while an awesome creation is, again, atypical BÖC - I think they defy categorisation but my pictorial history or rock book had them pegged as Intelligent Hard Rock. Who cares? They’re just a great band especially in their original formation.
blue oyster cult were probably the only band who could effortlessly mix hard rock and pop music and sound cool - agents of fortune and spectres are sublime
One of the very first songs I learned to play all the way through on bass. Fun to play and a great groove. Not often you hear the bass playing the melody in classic rock.
@@davidfowler2720 You're absolutely right. I forgot to mention that. I was lucky enough to see them twice back in the late 70s and early 80s in New Orleans
BÖC remains one of the most underrated bands in the history of rock. They have produced so many genius, memorable songs. Cultosaurus Erectus, Fire Of Unknown Origin, The Revolution By Night, Spectres, Mirrors, the “Black & White” albums - there are so many. Even their later stuff is worth a listen. Heaven Forbid etc. fantastically talented group. There’s also a thread that runs through their albums courtesy of Sandy Pearlman (producer and writer for the band in the early days - RIP) that speaks to a conspiratorial type back story. A kind of conceptual continuity. One of my favourite bands of all time.
Always happy to see more BOC. One of the most underrated bands of the 70's. And when they have 3 or 4 decent radio hits, you know it means something when they're STILL underrated.
My (now) 26 yo daughter went to see them in Atlanta, brought me a BOC t-shirt! When asked, she told me “those guys can still shred it”…thank you Cammi!…I’ve seen this bunch 5x times! Your reaction was spot on! Excellent work gents!
I’ve seen them 4 times, first in Germany in 1978, last time 2018 at a small venue in Batavia NY. Got to meet them all in Batavia, as I was retired but working security at the venue, Batavia Downs Casino. Really nice guys. “ I love the night “ is my favorite.
Something of a pop leaning from B.O.C., but it's catchy and memorable. I'm always pleased to hear it when it comes up, and it was a successful rock radio hit for them.
Good choice. I think the guitar work on this track is particularly interesting. The solo is very tastefully done and is almost like a composition in its own right.
My most favorite thing about this song is how every fourth right-ear guitar stab is dry, with echo on the rest. Just such a satisfying and awesome production choice.
I'm off to see Blue Oyster Cult this Saturday night. Over 50 years of top notch rock-shows. I can't miss them as every tour might be their last. Thanks for the great warm-up!
BOC is always worth a listen, this was a big hit for them. For another great BOC song, try Black Blade, an underrated banger, they have many. Enjoy! 🎶🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶
The band of so many sounds. Prog, classic rock, blues, jazzy.. they could pull it off. This was a classic cruising song when it came out. Night time, running the streets...
Yes, "Black Blade" is their most underrated track IMHO. "Shooting Shark" or ""Take Me Away" are also solid and underrated, but "Black Blade" should be first....
When this first hit the radio in , looks like 81`, so I was 16. I thought BOC had `sold out`. It sounded like pop rock to me. Kind of funny too, because I still liked the song, so not sure why it mattered to me anyway.
Same here, thinking it was a bit of B.O.C. lite at the time, but it remains a great song either way. And it sold for them. Every band or artist likes to turn some product and have (a)nother hit.
When 45 rpm records were the only way to hear music on the radio, B-sides were the 'flip side' of what the record company was promoting for the artists 'hit song'...Sometimes the B-side was equal too or better than the A-side.
Richard Meltzer, along with Pearlman and several other students, earned money on the side as booking agents for the big musical acts that came to Stony Brook in the 1960s. Following that, the two started writing lyrics and arranging gigs for a musical group they were promoting, Soft White Underbelly, later renamed Blue Öyster Cult (BÖC). Meltzer wrote the lyrics for many of the band's songs, including the hit "Burnin' for You". In 2012, Meltzer contributed spoken-word parts to Spielgusher, a musical collaboration with bassist Mike Watt, drummer Yuko Araki and guitarist Hirotaka Shimizu. Meltzer and Watt had originally hoped to collaborate during Watt's time in The Minutemen, but it was not completed before the death of Minutemen guitarist D. Boon.
Glad to see you two appreciating BOC. Very under rated today especially by reactors. They were very important to the hard rock scene. People talk about the "Unholy trinity" of Led Zep, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, BOC was right there with them and are the American version, along with Mountain--to make a trinity throw in Jimi Hendrix or maybe even Alice Cooper or maybe someone else I'm not thinking of right now. Anyway, yall need to hit some of the early BOC--"Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll" or "Then Came the Last Days of May" are good to start out with.
My favorite Blue Oyster Cult song. One thing that's almost hidden is that the guitar has a real reggae feel to it, which adds a lot to the almost relaxed and smooth sense of the song.
Saw the Black and Blue tour they did three encores and Ozzy was on the side just rocking out like a fan . When he came on stage he said that was the best rock concert he ever attended and then he did his thing . Great show
Gentlemen great reaction to a great song. BOC is terribly underrated. Buck is a phenomenal musician. You guys should listen to one of there older songs like Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll? Keep up the great work…. Love what you are doing for the music world..
Love your BOC reactions. They are a true music lover's band. I strongly suggest checking out their early work. Songs like Then Came the Last Days of May, 7 Screaming Diz Busters, and the last 3 songs on Secret Treaties - Harvester of Eyes, Flaming Telepaths, Astronomy - which flow together perfectly.
Please check out "Secret Treaties." Amazing album! Not a bad cut. Much better than their later, commercial stuff. That being said, glad you're aware. Great band, especially their "black and white" albums!
This caught the tail end of the Classic Rock Era. But it is top tier, no doubt. Along with Don't Fear The Reaper. After this, the 80s started ushering in the abomination that were hair bands.
Such an amazing song. The bass and rhythm have such spectacular reggae groove! For me this is a summertime windows down song that has stood the test of time, like so many of BOC songs. Great review!!!
I'm glad you guys liked it. When I'm Burnin For You first came out I was in high school and I thought well maybe that's a little too pop compared to some of the other stuff I like from them, although I definitely liked it. It just felt good. But then I saw them in concert again around that time and they were known for their cutting edge laser light show at the time and they really went all out with this song, and the whole experience made me just kind of sink into it? And then it was stuck deep in me forever and it still sounds so good to me. I could hear this over and over again.
BOC had only a few radio hits, one of which was this one, and they were good; but the real gems are deep cuts: "The Golden Age of Leather," "Astronomy," "The Vigil," etc. Love that you guys appreciate them!
I promise you the bass player was messing around and came up with that Line, and someone walked in and said "What's That"! And the song was born from there.
Saw them a few times in the early 80’s. When it was still that full band you are hearing. Great stuff. They have a great story too. Their symbol is on every album cover, they had a science fiction writer doing lyrics and they started as the Soft White Underbelly. See you down the rabbit hole. Keep up the good ears. Peace
This is my first time on your channel. Great reaction! Plus I love that the volume on the music is nice and loud. To many music reactors forget that we are here to rock out with them, so loud is better. Thanks, hitting subscribe.
I would HIGHLY suggest the next from B.O.C. is THEN CAME THE LAST DAYS OF MAY from the live album ON YOUR FEET OR ON YOUR KNEES!! It is TRUE story about a friend or friends that Buck Dharma ( B.O.C.'s lead guitarist) knew when they were attending Stoneybrook College in NYC back in the late 60s. CHECK IT OUT PLEASE!!??
Remember coming home from school one day... Turning the tv on and this was just starting on The Mike Douglas Show. 3:30 in the afternoon Blue Oyster Cult live on tv
“Time to play B-sides”. One of my favorite lines in a song. 🎵

Totally agree, one of my favorite lyrics
Me too- very clever lyric.
Ditto
The level of craft in this song is crazy, it's just a flawless pop gem. Every layer is a hook.
The bass line is amazing. It's like a walking lead. I never get tired of listening to it and the later guitar and bass battle.
Genius. BÖC still one the most underrated bands in rock history.
Most bands would give their left arm to have a song like this. The fact that BOC had two, this one, and Don’t Fear The Reaper, is amazing.
They're stone classics and I'd never dispute that. But at the same time they're also two of the least interesting songs in their catalog and I think that speaks volumes about the band. BOC at their creative peak were a weird, clever band with monstrous musicianship.

You couldn't be more correct.

The bass line in this song is so satisfying
One of the very first songs I learned to play all the way through on bass. Fun to play and a great groove. Not often you hear the bass playing the melody in classic rock.
I love this song, it gets better with more and more plays and gets more significant the older you get, 'Time is the essence, time is the season...'
