Hey great idea! have you really tried that? is it exactly the same? usb directly reads data, but Bay's direct IO is it's system, could be different? or no?
Just be sure to check which USB standard your router is using. Some older routers use USB 2.0 so the read and write speeds would be dreadful. If your router has USB 3.0 ports that's a great idea though, so thanks for posting that comment as I am sure I would never have thought of it otherwise.
Good review....Does the drive support different raid modes on the other drives at the same time. Example, 2 drives Raid 1 , while another 2 is also Raid 2 ?

Hi, Tony. Thanks for the informative review. I did purchase one of these but I was curious: Does it have to be attached to the computer the RAID managing software is installed on? Or can it be unplugged and plugged into another system after the RAID manager has completed setting up the drive? Thanks again for the video and keep it up, Tony!
Great video! ,, just wanted to check that if I use RAID 1, and the enclosure fails, at least one of the mirrored drives will be readable outside of the failed enclosure? Thanks again :)
Thanks for this review. I'm thinking to buy this ORICO. Can you tell if it is possible to use: 2 disks as raid (clone) and 3 disks as stand alone drive?
Why does it help with that? No support for multitasking at all … if you have the enclosure or multiple hard disks attached … exactly the same outcome. Or simply one large hard disk. The benefit is that you can put multiple old hard disks into one enclosure as case space is limited … or combine smaller ones to a RAID system. I trashed all my external hard disks … binned cases and cables and have one tidy solution so I did not have 5 external each with usb connection and power connection. But with multitasking? Nothing at all aas just hard drives.
For a new build simply buy good sized internal drives. No need for an enclosure! I bought one to recycle 5 external drives … getting the HDD out if them and clean and tidy in one enclosure. And as my Lian Li case got too full with water cooling and the FE RTX 3090 Ti as well as plenty of fans.
I have a 4TB SSD and 16TB HDD in my main PC. I'm looking at this to potentially do a RAID 5 with 5 16TB drives for a total of 64TB. How is this enclosure and RAID controller holding up for you?
If you don't setup RAID do the drives show up as individual drives? Can you format them to any file system you want? I'm asking cause I'm thinking of using one of these to attach to my file storage server. Much appreciated, thanks :)
Yes, use JOBD, all 5 drives show up individually and it allows the SMART data to be read too. However, the one I bought recently was faulty. Bay 1 always gave read errors. I may have a poor example of one, the next may be ok, who knows?
Can this DAS turn on automatically when power is applied? I saw a toggle switch on the back. I want to connect it to mine NAS server to expand the memory, but I don't want to manually enable it.
For me, the primary purpose for using an external hard drive enclosure or a docking station like the ORICO 9558U3 is to access data from old 3.5" SATA HDDs from my old computers. If I don't need to backup data or write new data, do I really need RAID manager? Will it be better to get an external HDD enclosure/dock without RAID?
Thanks Tony, if I only use the bay as a backup + archive of backup (meaning it will not be powered on old day) with RAID 1 or RAID 5 mode, can we put HDD that are not for NAS? if yes, what are the benefit to use HDD for NAS?
I have a question about your last PC build does the Ryzen 5 3600 work with the Asus ROG Strix b450-f gaming motherboard out of the box or do you have to update it with a older CPU? (I want to use this motherboard with my Ryzen 5 3600 but it says it won’t work on pcpartpicker)
Nice video actually just started getting into Organizing my systems over the years.. and man was there a lot of stuff, lot of duplicates and things I sorted through. Currently have 2 docks, that I am looking to upgrade... I consolidated almost all my data from my laptops to a 4tb drive, and my media to to another 4tb drive. I now have 3 extra drives laying around that I am going to use for current projects, and as I finish those projects, I save onto the 4tb drives. The docks while, I had them, are nice, but they just don't give that professional look. I don't really care too much about having it connected to my router, as I can connect to my computers through my network so thats not a big deal for me. I do run a plex server off my main desktop and one of my docked drives. Looking for a nicer set up, not sure if this is the one I want... but it seems like a good start. Faster transfer speeds wouldn't make a difference connected to the router vs usb to the computer I wouldn't think, im guessing it depends on the connection and speed of the drives? Is there anything else you might reccommend to look for around the same price range? Gotta do some homework on RAIDS.. i know a little but not enough to where I am comfortable with it yet.
Build quality is very solid, trays are metal clad in plastic i think, casing is very thick aluminum, no vibration mounts required, its just solid unlike the yottamaster junk i tried. Its loud as an air purifier though, but not as loud as previous orico raid models that had raid level leds in the front and had no trays behind the doors. I'm considering purchasing an Orico Enclosure from Amazon. However a lot of the reviews people left have to do with their hard drives falling asleep after being idle for a short period of time, making it impossible to access documents and folders on without rebooting the entire enclosure. Is this true and is there a work around for this issue?
@@piepie61218 I ordered the Orico Enclosure but I returned it since I didn't like the reviews. I ultimately decided to go with the Mediasonic ProBox HF2-SU3S2 4-Bay Enclosure. It's cheaper than the Orico, but it serves my purpose. It was pretty simple to set up, it's super quiet(IMO), and 4 months in, I have no complaints. I have 2-10TB 3.5 HD's currently and in few more months, I plan on getting 2 more 10TB HD's. Nice vid. I enjoy your excellent channel, wish you great success, man 👍. A few droppings of free advice below; kindly take it whichever way you want in your discretion: ► (1) If you put one of these enclosures into production (i.e. deployed to your hardware stack), then be sure to own and store an identical second one. When any single component on the first one dies or burns out, you will need the second unit for a non-gory recovery and prompt continuity. For example, good luck quickly finding a la carte an off-the-shelf power supply PSU that looks like that one. Or a replica of the proprietary internal RAID card running the same. With a second unit, one can restore by either . . . . . (i) just moving the drives (preferred route; but test this out in advance; it is good that one can test this in advance); or . . . . . (ii) keep the drives in place in Unit A then scavenge necessary replacement hardware components from Unit B to Unit A with soldering, wiring, drilling, hot-gluing, hammering and screwing your way to the promised land (less preferred; not easily testable without guaranteeing non-destruction on Units A or B). ► (2) 2:51 In general about hardware versus software raid . . . All hardware Raid suffers this problem of 'vendor lock.' Cordially advise to explore software alternatives like ZFS. Along those lines, cordially advise to downgrade from a Raid-based enclosure to a cardless JBOD box, which . . . . . (i) if such JBOD is USB, then simple; or . . . . . (ii) alternatively which if such is SAS/SATA, then add and enable a HBA card to your file-serving 'puter. ► (3) 2:37 Cordially advise covering the red/white Raid switches with black tape so no one messes with them accidentally or otherwise. To repeat ►(1) above, cordially advise to requisition a 2nd duplicate RAID card (and maybe triplicate, too). Cordially cannot stress that enough. Meanwhile, take very, very good care of the proprietary Raid controller inside the enclosure; keep the fan on high and keep the h/w Raid's caps and Vrms as cool as you can for their longevity. Kindest regards, neighbors.
I'm having trouble adding a hard drive to the final slot. I have 3 hard drives already in it and I want to and a final 8TB hard drive to the last slot. Its coming up in the software as unreleased and I cant seem to get it to add to the over all hard drive space. I can click create raid on the new hard drive but im worried it will try and either A. create a new raid 5 and erase all of my existing data or B. just create a second single raid? Not sure what to do.
Never tried it, but when considering RAID the feedback was far from positive. If the enclosure dies the files are also corrupted. Several colleagues tried expensive data recovery. Despite hundreds of £ they did not get any or no usable dats back. Sounds like … if the enclosure dies the RAID data are lost.
noob q...can i connect this enclosure with 5 hdds to my router's usb and then share all those hdds across my home network? will there be any bottleneck in the read and write speeds if i do that?
I know it's very late, but as per the official documentation - RAID1 supports only 2 HDDs in the enclosure. Sadly, you can't do 2 RAID1 arrays, you can only have 1.
I want to buy this enclosure for România as fast as possible. Can you get me in touch with the guys at ORICO? I wanna use with 5x 8TB Seagate Barracuda 5400rpm 256MB Cannot seem to find it anywhere to buy it :-(
I have the same product but using the software for raid connection is not working. Keep showing me no disk when I open the software. Any solution to that issue please?
Here is a wild guess: S/w Raid (Orico's or Windows Raid or zfs) will not allow it with this unit because even when switched to 'Clear-Raid,' this unit's h/w raid card is presenting all the disks together as a single virtual volume. So sundry softwares sense there's little to nothing left. I.e. it thinks, "Only one volume or drive, my Precious? Thens nothings fors us's to dos." Kindest regards, neighbor.
its just an over glorified enclosure sold at a NAS price, better use the money to build a new pc used as NAS. Tbh this thing should be sold at only half the price.
If i have 1 hdd for movies storage in there, and i use a laptop connect to another larger monitor, the bay must connect to the laptop or can i connect the bay to monitor (without laptop on)
Interesting, I have the 4-bay version of the Orico usb 3 raid. With four 4TB WD Red's, I'm getting close to the same read speed (about 236 mb/s) but my write is like 168 mb/s. Way off your write speeds.
This is perfect, because i'm kinda of a compulsive hoarder but instead of having trash all over the house i have trash inside of a computer hard disk
Learn to use DaVinci and cut down on what you have, plus record using Handbrake.
But use cpu not gpu encoding. Save 30% more space overall.
Can relate to the hoarding... I tend to hoard files... It's not healthy..
You can plug it right into the router then you can access on the network.
The USB on the router can be used for storage devices.

I read somewhere that as soon as this is used, it caused all the hard drives to malfunction and all data got lost. What are the chances this could happen? I'm planning to buy one and will plug this to my dell xps 15.
DId u end up getting it? Would love an update
Nice vid. I enjoy your excellent channel, wish you great success, man 👍. A few droppings of free advice below; kindly take it whichever way you want in your discretion:
► (1) If you put one of these enclosures into production (i.e. deployed to your hardware stack), then be sure to own and store an identical second one. When any single component on the first one dies or burns out, you will need the second unit for a non-gory recovery and prompt continuity. For example, good luck quickly finding a la carte an off-the-shelf power supply PSU that looks like that one. Or a replica of the proprietary internal RAID card running the same. With a second unit, one can restore by either
. . . . . (i) just moving the drives (preferred route; but test this out in advance; it is good that one can test this in advance); or
Along those lines, cordially advise to downgrade from a Raid-based enclosure to a cardless JBOD box, which
. . . . . (i) if such JBOD is USB, then simple; or
I cwnt decide betwern this orico or the qnap tr-004
I'm having trouble adding a hard drive to the final slot. I have 3 hard drives already in it and I want to and a final 8TB hard drive to the last slot. Its coming up in the software as unreleased and I cant seem to get it to add to the over all hard drive space. I can click create raid on the new hard drive but im worried it will try and either A. create a new raid 5 and erase all of my existing data or B. just create a second single raid? Not sure what to do.
Can you use this to download steam video games?

Is the USB 3.0 enough speed for running PLEX 4K Movies RAW, no compression 50-80MB/s?
of course, and in raid mode the reads are even faster.
im wondering. if its on raid, what happens when the enclosure dies? just curious
Never tried it, but when considering RAID the feedback was far from positive. If the enclosure dies the files are also corrupted. Several colleagues tried expensive data recovery. Despite hundreds of £ they did not get any or no usable dats back. Sounds like … if the enclosure dies the RAID data are lost.
noob q...can i connect this enclosure with 5 hdds to my router's usb and then share all those hdds across my home network? will there be any bottleneck in the read and write speeds if i do that?
is there a way to shut down Orico in PC without using the switch?
Lessss gooo boi

the key is to lock your HDD from flying out lmfao

Thanks for watching!!
Can TrueNAS install on it?
great review, nice product! Data Hoarder Certified.
Hello Tony, it's possible make RAID1 with 4 disk : 16Tb & 16Tb & 10Tb & 10 Tb ?
I know it's very late, but as per the official documentation - RAID1 supports only 2 HDDs in the enclosure. Sadly, you can't do 2 RAID1 arrays, you can only have 1.
I want to buy this enclosure for România as fast as possible. Can you get me in touch with the guys at ORICO? I wanna use with 5x 8TB Seagate Barracuda 5400rpm 256MB
Cannot seem to find it anywhere to buy it :-(
I have the same product but using the software for raid connection is not working.
Thens nothings fors us's to dos."
Kindest regards, neighbor.

Do you know what parts would be good for a really good 1.1k pc are
Work in Xbox S/X o play 5?
can i use witout raid mode like normal mode. 5 drive with specific name?
JBOD mode (Just a Bunch Of Disks)
Has anyone had success expanding the RAID with a bigger HDD using the Orico software? If not, do you have any recommendations?
I may not be first but i am not last. Nice vid btw
Is it mac compatible?
When I go on your custom built pc website nothing shows up is your website down
Crossyboi 876 Banner at the top and FAQs page for more info. Thanks for watching!
How much$$ is it?
its just an over glorified enclosure sold at a NAS price, better use the money to build a new pc used as NAS. Tbh this thing should be sold at only half the price.
Cool
justin so Thanks
noti gangggggg
TIME FOR 8K with this upgrade huh
PRIZE ?
is this gluten free
wouldn't recommend this enclosure, I have been using it for a while now and it is crashing my drives as they use cheap sata bridges
RAID: Redundant Array of Independent Disks
If i have 1 hdd for movies storage in there, and i use a laptop connect to another larger monitor, the bay must connect to the laptop or can i connect the bay to monitor (without laptop on)
Hi tony
TWERK TONY PLS JUST TWERK
I already have ;)
Haha lets go
Interesting, I have the 4-bay version of the Orico usb 3 raid. With four 4TB WD Red's, I'm getting close to the same read speed (about 236 mb/s) but my write is like 168 mb/s. Way off your write speeds.
An EarthQuake?! FFS
256mb/s is complete trash. I have nother orico, not able to do raid, but it transfers 400mb/s for 150$
Early gang ---->
Thanks for watching so early!
