    This is just what I needed in order to grow more dust algae for my hillstream loaches and snails. I don't have any floating plants, but I do have dwarf lilies, some buce, and some guppy grass. The Guppy grass is taking over, so a trim is in order.

    Great video. I agree that the soil in a caridina tank is whats makes algae grow and the ecosystem alive. The last soil I used, SL Aqua, kept ph very low but it's so poor in nutrients that the tanks were very sterile and most baby shrimp didn't survive. Switching to Amazonia powder now and still cycling but lots of algae and microfauna on the walls already

    • @ShrimpMania
      @ShrimpMania  2 года назад

      Good choice - Amazonia is a good soil and contained a lot of nutrients

      Can I tell you something ? I growed thick wall of dust algae with no substrate and just a lot of moss. After a week with 8 hours of light a day the algae just grew and grew and spread all over. My point is no need for a soil to grow dust algae.

    Don't worry about the sediment at the bottom of your filters. That is just the soil particles that naturally settle to the bottom. As long as there is water movement it will not become toxic.

    • @ShrimpMania
      @ShrimpMania  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the info. When there is too much waste at the bottom it starts to get to the water column and cloudy the water this is why clean it mostly to make the water crystal clear.

    How can I lower my TDS? I’m using distilled water and remineralizing it to around 200 but once I put it in the tank it ends up going to around 550!!!!! I only have some plants and some driftwood in the tank! I don’t know why it is going so high! When I do water changes I don’t even add anything to the water at times and the TDS still ends up between 450 and 550.

    • @BDGMed
      @BDGMed 2 года назад +2

      Do you have any rocks in the tank? What’s the substrate? If it’s going from 400-500 something is probably degrading in the low ph. Possibly stones🤔 try doing a water change with di 0tds water and see if it goes back up. If it does something is leaching. Slow drip the 0 tds water in to not shock the shrimps
