    Which books did you DNF? Which book series you won't be finishing?
    Do you do it often or is it very rare?

      BookswithEmilyFox the library at mount chair I bought it because you recommend it and I couldn't go pass the first 100 pages but I think it was because I had so many other books I wanted to read and the beginning is so weird and slow that I replace it with another book but I would pick it up in another occasion !! Hope it gets better

      The beginning is really strange but it definitely is worth pushing through the first 1/3!

      BookswithEmilyFox I'm not going to finish the Lunar Chronicles series, Shatter Me series ( I actually loved the first book but I waited too long to purchase the second book so I forgot everything that happened), and I'm definitely not finishing Daughter of Smoke and Bones series. I was super into the first book but then when I got to the end I was super confused.

      BookswithEmilyFox the mortal instruments. Hated the characters, hated the writing, and it was soooo predictable. Meh.

      The Daughter of Smoke and Bone series. Holy shit was I disappointed. I bought this, super excited after hearing about that fantasy world etc. Through the whole book I just waited for things to start happening, for some action, anything. What I got was a really weird Instalove, and nothing like really happened 'till the end. I gave the second book a shot, but no. Daughter of Smoke and Bone remind me of why I have such a hard time getting into YA fantasy or hyped books.

    ASOIAF is worth it, at least through A Storm of Swords. The book and show plots really start diverging after a while, and in any case, there's SO much subtext to the books that never gets translated to the screen. I enjoy GoT, but it's a skin-deep adaptation of a much richer book series.

      I would totally agree with you. Especially in GRRM's treatment of women vs. the show's treatment of women. Numerous times through the series, GRRM makes it apparent how damaging it is to treat women as less-than-equals. The Cersei/ Tywin relationship vs. Arya/ Ned is a good example of this, I think. Cersei has ambitions and wants to prove to her father that she is just as good as a man, but because he neglected to train her the way he trained Tyrion and Jaime, she fails miserably, but has NO IDEA she's failing, because she is getting her way (until it collapses on her in ADWD). With Ned, he listened to Arya, initially resisted, but then armed her with a teacher, and enabled her to survive.

      I completely agree - I would say if you want to read the books after watching the show (and you are someone who doesn't like knowing what happens next) start with book four (maybe 3.5) since that is really the point where the show starts changing from the source material (I do think its worth looking at cliffnotes or something like that if you are going to start with book 4 just to get a little refresher)

    • @sara.fernandes
      @sara.fernandes 7 лет назад +13

      I agree. The books are completely worth it! I enjoy the tv show (not as much as used to), but I LOVE the books: they have a lot more to offer and they don't have the plot holes we can see in the tv show. There are so many amazing details that would be impossible to translate to the screen. And the further you read the more differences you will find.

      I can understand why she wouldn't want to finish though. Reading the series while the show is on its difficult to justify such a time investment when you are not enthralled all the way through. I will be continuing to read the series because it's been 20+ years for me. If it weren't that I would consider dropping it. Many friends of mine who have been there since the beginning have dropped the books.

      I have to disagree, the show maker changed the plot starting from book 3 cuz it was a bit trash in the books, I really prefer the screen adaptation to the actual story

    Game of thrones is one that I would continue. The books and show do separate and there are things in the books that never happen in the show. I recommend you finish the series. But again, I’ve been waiting for Winds of Winter for literally 6 years so...lol

    As a huge TMI fan I definitely think you should keep going with it because it gets better and better as it goes. But my favorite is the Infernal Devices it's just such a special and wonderful series. And then after reading that you'll see little ways it's connected to TMI. Cassandra Clare does an excellent job of connecting her characters all throughout time.

  • @booksbybrie
    @booksbybrie 7 лет назад +11

    The Infernal Devices is a million times better than the Mortal Instruments, so I definitely recommend reading that instead. And TMI actually spoils the ending of TID, just so you know!
    Also, for game of thrones, the show followed the first and second books really closely but started to diverge around Storm of Swords, and it left out some of the best plot points so I definitely recommend at least giving storm of swords a try! The books totally aren't for everyone though, so it's understandable if you don't ☺

    About the TMI series, try not to worry too much about that plot twist. The third and the sixth book are the best ones in my opinion. There's so much more action coming (beyond all the love interests thingies) and even more OMGG plot twists. But it'll be alright, try to finish the third book and if you still feel the same, then the series might not be your thing but yeah, it's worth it trust me ;)

    I read the Uglies series during high school and I remember liking it! If you don't like the beginning (I don't know where exactly in the story you stopped), I would try to finish it cause it does move on from the "woe is me, I'm ugly" part at some point :P

    I love the Lunar Chronicles, I have to say Cinder and Scarlet were not the best. Scarlet has Insta-love and Cinder was predictable. Even though, Cress was the best. It was everything and so was Winter.

    I would say the third GoT book is still like the series only with a few small changes but after that the books are 'completely' different to the show. Anyways I've read the ASOIAF series twice now and I love it it's my favourite fantasy! yeah they're big but sooo good! I'm really excited to read The Gunslinger to seeif I feel the same about it:D

  • @TheJoma11
    @TheJoma11 7 лет назад +1

    For me ASOIAF books are sooo worth it, there is plenty of stuff going on directly or behind the scenes that never gets mentioned in the show. But I agree, they are such a commitment. Also I feel like I got much more out of them only on second reading because it's impossible to keep up with all plot points and characters at the same time but after watching the show at least you can visualize some characters and places so it's easier.

    I loved The Gunslinger but I was the opposite of the opinion you've heard... I thought it was great as a stand alone. I got soooo confused in the second and third books and DNF'd the third. But LOVED the first. I also LOVED James Patterson. I have not read his books in years but I loved the Alex Cross series and still plan on continuing with them one day, especially since they are SUCH fast reads! You can fly through those books. I have not heard of the one that you mentioned though. I suggest trying Kiss the Girls or the first - Along Came a Spider (if you have not already seen the movies). It's worth a shot since they take a day to read! Good luck!

    I agree on Gunslinger. I was so looking forward to reading it and now I'm not sure I'll continue with the series. I can see all the King elements I normally like in there, but it's clear it's an early attempt.
    I currently have a pile of books I'm "reading" but really, I need to just accept I'm not gonna finish most of them.

  • @Celyndraa

    I couldn't finish the Uglies series too, I read the first two ones and said "never again! I just can't continue and adhere to that".
    I also remember when my mother read the Dark Tower series. She was like you, she didn't really enjoy the first book. But, luckyly, she had an edition with the first three books so she continued. And now it's part of her favorite book series ;)

  • @GemSola2

    For James Patterson if you wanted to check out more of his books I suggest the Maximum Ride series. It was the first of his work that I've ever read and I really enjoyed the first three books. Can't say I can recommend the Max Ride books after book three though...they started to get a little iffy from book four onward.

    The Confession's series (the one by James Patterson that you were talking about) is a great series. The first one wasn't the best, because the main character was annoying, but it gets better. There are reasons she's like that and there's a whole extra story to it that gets explained later. As the story unfolds, she becomes more likeable.

  • @Lilly1668
    @Lilly1668 7 лет назад +1

    The Dark Tower was confusing to me too and I just couldn't follow the plot. I actually felt bad for giving up on it because one of my friends really loved it. For me, I think there's something with King's writing that makes me put the book down. From the books i've read from him, this one was the hardest to finish.

  • @mbergie1313
    @mbergie1313 7 лет назад

    I totally agree with you about James Patterson, I tried to finish his Wizards and Witches series (I don't remember if that's the exact title), but I just did not like his writing style very much. As for the Lorien Legacies, the movie doesn't do the book justice, and I do think overall it is worth reading the rest of the books. There is quite a bit of cheese, but there are a lot of new characters that get introduced that I think are better than John and Sarah, and I think the plot gets progressively better.

  • @harmoniaaydeegonzalez7020
    @harmoniaaydeegonzalez7020 7 лет назад

    I have to say the Mortal Instruments, you should finish. The third book, about 60% through your plot twist gets resolved. It actually makes a lot of sense when you consider that there are 6 books total and the plot throughout the rest of the story. Just finished City of Glass but I've read the entire series before, so I already know what's going to happen. Good luck, either way!

    omg I can't believe that you didn't like the Lorien legacies series!!! it's one of my all time favorite series!!! the first book definitely isn't one of my favorites but the climax of every book gets more and more exciting as you get through it!

  • @sassysarahreads
    @sassysarahreads 7 лет назад

    If you are reading an older edition of The Gunslinger then it's highly unedited. I bought a very recent publication and any edition published before the last book came out is not completely in line with the story. King said that he was a young writer and there many inconsistencies and problems he found when rereading to write the final novel. That could be a problem if it's an older edition. I personally really enjoyed it, but I do see what you mean because it hops around a lot and there isn't a lot of explanation for a lot of the storyline.

    I read City of Bones and don't plan on finishing the series. I'm weirded out by the romance between Clary and Jace and I don't like the writing or any of the characters--the plot bored me too. I do plan on giving The Infernal Devices a try at some point, though.
    I DNF'ed Uprooted too, but I want to give it a second chance before the movie comes out.

    you said that alot of people loved the gunslinger but I don't think it's true. actually ALOT of people hated it but I swear the second book is so good and it's really worth it. try 50 pages of the second book and if you can't get into it then don't even bother because it's not for you. the first book is weird but the second book is so different from the first one and better in alot of ways. I'm new to the series myself and I doubted the series but the second one was a pleasant surprise and do much easier to read. I recommend you read his short story " little sisters of Eluria" in his short stories creation. the short story is about Roland before the gunslinger book's events happen and it's so good and from it you can decide if the series is worth it or not.

      Berna Baradan I'm really happy to help. if you have time check out his short story " little sisters of Eluria" in his short story collection 'everything eventual '. the story is about one of Roland's adventures before the gunslinger book. it's one of his best short stories in my opinion and you get to know Roland as a character better.

    I loved the Game of Thrones books, even though they are quite a mission to read. Although, I do think if you didn’t get into them by that far into Clash of Kings, it’s quite possible they’re just not for you and it’s not worth picking up the rest of the series

    Though I´m still trying to finish the SoIaF series (the last one has been on my shelves unread for almost a year), I completely understand why you wouldn't feel the need to finish it! It's definitely a big commitment you have to focus on and take the time for. I'm still not sure how I actually feel about the series and feel like I'm biased because of the TV show!
    I agree on the Uglies! I read the first two in that series and absolutely disliked the second book so didn't feel the need to continue. Now I'm sure I will unhaul them, when I next decide to clear out my shelves.

    I started reading A Song of Ice and Fire right after finishing the first season of the show back in 2012... and I've read all 5 books in a month :D I know, now I can't even believe it myself but back then I didn't know about booktube or goodreads and didn't have a huge TBR so it was easy to focus on this one series.
    I really recomment you to read The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey, it's an amazing and badass adult space opera, I'm obsessed with it. Also the 2d season of the show is airing now and it's also very good, I even get goosebumps from it.

    I've heard that James Patterson's later books are not as good as his earlier works. I haven't read anything from him recently so I can't speak from personal experience in that regard but I really enjoyed books like Along Came A Spider and Cat and Mouse from the Alex Cross series. I'd recommend trying those or other books that he wrote awhile back before deciding whether he's for you or not. I also heard that he doesn't always write his books now (don't quote me on this though because I'm not sure) but I think he uses ghost writers or something of the sort.

    I completely understand the Game of Thrones (or rather, A Song of Ice and Fire) DNF situation - it's just so difficult to get into, and to actually commit to a series that is so massive! I did read the first book, but now I've been stuck in the middle of the second one for about a year and a half! It's a really intimidating series, haha.

    I feel the same way about Uprooted. About 25% into it I realized I would forget what had just happened (which rarely happens to me) and I was getting worse. Also the main character is 2D in my opinion. The ideas in the story was cool but it wasn’t enough to carry the story.

    My husband finally DNFed Games of Thrones too!! I had to convince him to stop reading it because he was dreading it every time lol! He loves the TV show (which I haven't watched - and yes I need to get on that lol) so I think he was expecting more from the books. It's weird, it's like sometimes we feel guilty or obliged to finish a book or series that we don't like! I'm trying to break that habit because I rather spend my time reading something I like and since we are reading for pleasure it should be pleasurable 😁

    I LOVED Uprooted, but I understand your issue with the magical system. Personally, I enjoy Naomi Noviks fairy tale inspired novels (Spinning Silver is my favorite so far), so the only problem I have with the magic in Uprooted is the fact that - spoiler? - they just create food out of thin air. I know, it's only a tiny detail, irrelevant to the story itself, but I really get hung up on stuff like that ^^" That aside, I liked the book and I didn't feel like the heroine was surpassing her mentor. She just realized that she works magic by intuition instead of following a man-made path. I could try to explain in detail, but the fairy tale elements make it kind of difficult to grasp the magic in general. I like that though.
    Now to your question: I hardly ever DNF a book. Especially if it infuriates me, I feel obligated to finish it, because if I want to have such a strong hatred for something, at least I need to make sure that I hate it till the very end. When I DNF a book however, it's because it want to spend my energy on something else. Maybe I don't hate it, but it just doesn't do it for me.
    A series I definitely won't ever finish? The Iron Druid Chronicles. I got the first book, because I thought it sounded fun, but the execution just made me angry for so many reasons...
    Anyway, I enjoyed seeing your list and hearing your opinions on those books. Don't feel too bad about not finishing A Song of Ice and Fire. I read the books instead of watching the TV-series, because I want my stories as detailed as possible, but I'm currently taking a little break from all the devastation that happened so far. It's a masterpiece and all (I guess), but in the long run, I prefer my books with a bit more light-hearted humor.
    Keep up the good work :)

    I am actually completely with you on many of the series. I enjoyed Cinder and Mortal instruments was okay but both of those where nothing that in my option was worth the huge amount of hype they got and i don't really understand how they got to the hyped up point because they are good, but not in any way great?
    So happy to hear another person not love those.
    About the Dark Tower series.... I think it is a very specific thing. If you love Stephen Kings writing i think you enjoy it and appreciate the Fantasy series for what it becomes from the second book on.
    BUT if you didn't like the first book, why bother continuing because while the writing gets less muddled, the overall "what the heck is happening" feeling kind of continues on -for me at least....
    Great video!

    I almost gave up on the Lunar Chronicles after the second book. I'm glad I didn't because I ended up really enjoying Cress! It has a totally different feel to it, mainly because Cress and the Captain are really cute and Scarlet and Wolf didn't have a lot of scenes in the third book (especially not together - I loathed every page I had to read about them in Scarlet lol)

    LOL The Gunslinger is not a book series I would recommend to a first time Stephen King reader. If you really just want to get your feet wet before you commit he has several books of his short stories that are great to read. The oldies are 'Graveyard Shift' or Skeleton Crew. If you want just stand alone stories I can recommend 'The Long Walk', 'Cell' or one of my all time favorites 'The Mist.' They are some of his shorter works and are interesting without getting into the characters back stories too much. Mr. King LOVES to delve into his characters back stories and can be really excessive sometimes. I couldn't get into the Dark Tower series myself.

    One series I don't plan on finishing book is the Tarzan series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I love the first two and will probably reread them sometime in my life. That being said there are 24 books in the Tarzan series, and I've heard the series went down hill as Burroughs had to come up with more adventures. I don't want my enjoyment of the series to be tainted if I end up disliking the rest. I might read the 3rd book but I seriously doubt I'll read all 24.

    I won't finish the mortal instruments, I hated the first four books! And I'm still not sure about the lunar chronicles. I loved her other book, heartless.. and I only need to read cress and winter but ugh.... it's such a weird series.

    ASOIAF is a series I will not be finishing. I am definitely going to finish a Storm of Swords just to finish it. I find the writing to be so dense and little details are given as much emphasis as major events. It's definitely not as captivating as the first two or my attention span has withered.

    Finish the GoT series!! The first season stuck to the books pretty religiously, but after that they pretty much said fuck the books and went their own way. The show did some weird things and made some odd choices, and left out some really great plots and important things. I LOVE the series and I am rereading it via audiobook. You might prefer just going with the audiobook on this one, and it's done well.

    I have a terrible habit of trying to force myself to finish books and series even if it's downright painful. I'm trying to let go of that habit knowing there are way more excellent books than I'll ever get to in a lifetime.
    I totally skim A Song of Fire and Ice books. I watched the first few seasons of the series, but it diverged from the books too much for me to stick with it.
    I skipped the third book in the Divergent series. I enjoyed the first one, but the second one was a slog.

    I totally hear you about A Song of Ice and Fire series. I tried it over 15 years ago, hated it, put it down. Tv show came out so I tried it again, because I grew up and tastes change.... right? Well that's usually the case but...not so much with that one for me. But then I don't like the TV show either, at least not past the first season, I watch it if there is nothing else to see but I don't exactly go out of my way to find it.
    I have tried to get into Uprooted several times, I haven't DNF'd it yet but I might end up doing so. Considering it's sat without being touched for the last couple of years.
    I love Stephan King books but the Gunslinger is a horrible series. I believe I read up until about 3/4 through book 3 or 4 like 7 or 8 years ago, never did finish it.

  • @kirihara120

    I'm going to disagree with a lot of the people who commented that you should continue Ice and Fire. I read all 5 books back in 2011 right after I watched season 1 since I wanted to know more. Book 3 is definitely the best book and it really goes down hill from there. Book 4 is definitely the worst and honestly I don't think Book 5 is that much better. It just has more interesting POV characters. I understand that many fans like the intricacies and multiple subplots that are explored in the books, but personally to me they show that GRRM has lost the ability to control his own story lines. As someone who's read several series that explore worlds bigger than Ice and Fire's, GRRM keeps waywardly expanding his world and has lost grasp of how to bring characters back together. I think the show is excellent (for the most part) in its ability to condense and keep the relevant story lines. Even though I've read all 5 books, when the show finishes (and it might end even before book 6 comes out), I will likely not continue with the books. I'm sure I'll be more than happy with what the show does as the ending will be the same as what GRRM envisions.

    I also got stuck when I was reading ASOIAF, although for me it was largely due to the uncertain future of the series (George R.R.Martin seems to be doing anything but working on the sequels xD), and I'm not willing to devote large chunks of my (limited) spare time to reading a series that might end up unfinished. Also, it does tend to drag - I need to go out and say it despite the fact that I love the worldbuilding & plot twists.And I find it a bit depressing that so many people weren't all that keen on Uprooted. xD I'd say that the majority of the reviews I've watched here on RUclips were negative! However, I'm still going to give it go, because it sounds just like my kind of thing! :)

    A series I finally gave up on after like 8 or more books is The House of Night series By Pc Cast & Kristin Cast. It's vampire school sort of situation which I was really into like ten years ago when Vampires were all the rage lol. I liked the first few books but then I was just reading them because I felt like I needed to finish the series or something but it's freakin never ending! I think they have 14-15 books now and I have no clue if it's wrapped up nor do I care...
