I thought , for decades that Tanya's version was the original. But no; about 2 or 3 artists had done it prior, including writer Alex Harvey, Dianne, Davidson, and ( maybe, though not confirmed) Bette Midler. Here's are links to the earlier recordings Alex Harvey ruclips.net/video/5g3I6oVLecg/видео.html/ Dianne Davidson ruclips.net/video/pGMNsHGcqzQ/видео.html and Bette Midler ruclips.net/video/Y1FUoqVmLfo/видео.html. This makes Tanya about the 3rd or 4th artist to record the song, and most definitely the first to have a huge ginormous hit with it
That puzzles me too.Heard Helen Reddy's version on 70s Sirius today.I prefer Tanya's version...Reddy may have had the momentum from her previous big hit single 'I Am Woman'
Well, obviously Helen was inspired by Tanya's recording; because her version while more "poppy" than Tucker's, used a nearly identical arrangement. Nonetheless, I consider Tanya's to be the DEFINITIVE version!
Beautiful

She’s 13 here Chad.
Is that the original version or her remake? She doesn't sound 13 here...
That's what on the show dvd,if I remember correctly...I'll need to double check that if I find the original performance again from the library.
Don’t know why Helen Reddy had more of a hit with this song than Tanya did.
