It's been said Louis XIV was called the Sun King because when he was young he performed this lengthy ballet (about 24 hours long) and his role was that of the main character as 'the Sun' and the dancers were in effect the planets, stars and some constellations
This inspiring production is by far the best version (either in TV or Cinema production) of The Man in The Iron Mask, a masterpiece of unparalleled display of the art of film making. The more recent production of the story is so abysmally inferior to this genius 1977 production, that it's not even worth mentioning...
I think that, unfortunately, nowadays, the most of the people don't care about history and they just think that everything that is old is boring. And Hollywood has never been good at making historical movies ... as an example of the film "Man in the Iron Mask" starring DiCaprio.
As I commented on another video, Chamberlain forgot more about screen presence than Leo will ever know. That's not a criticism of DiCaprio, it's just the way it is.
The music is from Lully's Alceste, Act V, Scene 6 (look for the middle of the scene, you'll find this piece). It was at most orchestrated differently and adapted, not composed by someone else.
I remember watching this on local TV as a kid, and I already knew about Louis XIV then. Came to me as how a dandy king goes, sort of a Michael Jackson of those times.
I'm hoping this version will be released again...it was best!...I'm a bit biased. My father, Allyn Ferguson, composed the music, not Lully, as was stated below, many years ago. But, he always well-researched before composing any particular piece within a movie, to be consistent with the era/period ... wonderful players in London, some were with the RPO!
wow...beautiful music and suits the movie completely....i'm not old enough to know what their music really sounded like (lol) ..but i can imagine something like this...thank you..and your father....i love this movie...xx
Yes And A wonderful Job Allyn Made Of It. Aspects Of Course "Adapted ", From Lully. He Had To Make All One Tempo, For A Start. An Absolutely Marvellous Film. A+++ !. Terrific Actors, Music. We Wont See The Like If This Little Masterpiece Again !.
wow certainly the best version ever say it as a child was traumitizedfor years after it because of the wig snatching scene and Louis mean demeanor.Richard Chamberlain became Louis 14th in this movie never a more spot on portrayal bravo!
got 2 say this scene like the rest of the movie is mind blowing on magic mushrooms....watched it on tv 2day tripping ...it the best movie everrrrrrrrrrrrrrwow
Great movie! I think it's reakky better than the "man in the iron mask" with L.di Caprio.
I’d Say That Allyn Did Just What Matthew Dean has suggested. And added Something. Of Course, Keeping The Same Tempo Throughout The Piece Was Of Great Importance For The Films, Dance Sequence. It Works So Very Well. This Is Also A Great Film. They Don’t Make Things Like This Anymore !.
Maybe you can download it in some torrent host site like "Kickass Torrents" or "Torrentz", but it isn't easy to find, and even if you manage to find it, the film is in french, and unless you are French, finding subtitles to a film this old are almost impossible to find so you can eitheir learn French (but be aware that the French they speak here would be an advanced French, I doubt that they would use a modest vocabulary here) or you can ask someone who knows French if they can translate the film to you.
Excellent question. Afraid I don't know where this music was taken from. There are other tunes in the film taken from various opera-ballets of Lully. The ball in the final sequence features the Chaconne of Amadis, for example. Anyone out there recognize the tune in this scene?
Its inspired by Alceste ou le triomphe d'Alcide. specifically from Alceste, LWV 50, Act V, Scene 6: Triomphez, généreux Alcide. See ruclips.net/video/gD-lJRjwofE/видео.html
@derLullist ...Many thanks for finally solving the mystery for us. You are indeed the Lully specialist! It's interesting the way they merged the two pieces, isnt it? By the way, they are definitely not performing minuet steps anywhere in there. ;-)
Medieval History at most it was Jean Baptiste Lully..Not Richard Lully. And for the record, Lully is the Frenchized surname of the Florentine Giovanni Battista Lulli. Italian musician serving the King of France Louis XIV.
@@teomorandi I think they just put lully meaning jean baptiste lully and the richard is the @ to his youtube channel for example you say bach for short and not johann Sebastian bach
This movie is by far better than the 1998 version, and the music through all the film is superb. It´s a pity Allyn Ferguson has not the great acclaim he deserves.
Is this the version with the butter? I'm looking for the version of man in the iron mask where the musketeers free him, and when released, and set at a table, he eats everything like he did before: head in his neck, like eating a herring. After that, he just picks up a stick of butter, and takes a bite. Anyone know what movie that is?
Great movie! I think it's reakky better than the "man in the iron mask" with L.di Caprio.
I liked this version best of all. They haven't shown it in a while, though.
It's been said Louis XIV was called the Sun King because when he was young he performed this lengthy ballet (about 24 hours long) and his role was that of the main character as 'the Sun' and the dancers were in effect the planets, stars and some constellations
Look for the film "The King Dances" (Le Roi Danse)... 👑☀️
Richard is golden.l love treasure

As others already said, me too I think this was way much better than the movie starring DiCaprio...why can't they do this kind of movies anymore ?
+galerius61 Agreed. And to think it was a made-for-tv movie.
+galerius61 "They" have either forgotten how to, or they think the public can't understand anything that isn't gratuitous or over-produced, I guess.
I think that, unfortunately, nowadays, the most of the people don't care about history and they just think that everything that is old is boring. And Hollywood has never been good at making historical movies ... as an example of the film "Man in the Iron Mask" starring DiCaprio.
The directors, producers and actors these days just aren't as good.
As I commented on another video, Chamberlain forgot more about screen presence than Leo will ever know. That's not a criticism of DiCaprio, it's just the way it is.
I have it on DVD. One of my personal faves too. Classic bit of swashbuckling.
i love this movie! jennie agutter i remember so fondly, now i see her in call the midwife.
Love the hat on McGoohan!

I wish you could watch the whole movie, on RUclips !
You can! It's 10 years late but it's on RUclips right now. Enjoy!
I remember watching this on local TV as a kid, and I already knew about Louis XIV then. Came to me as how a dandy king goes, sort of a Michael Jackson of those times.
Yea they are both virgos

By far the best version of Iron Mask. None of the others come close.
What is the song called
Lully did write that piece of music look up Alceste ou le trimphe d’alcide
Yes And A wonderful Job Allyn Made Of It. Aspects Of Course "Adapted ", From Lully.

Stali jako slunce, díky pane! Králi slunce
Question: where are the musicians in this scene? Who is playing the music?
Always off to the side!
wow certainly the best version ever say it as a child was traumitizedfor years after it because of the wig snatching scene and Louis mean demeanor.Richard Chamberlain became Louis 14th in this movie never a more spot on portrayal bravo!
Superb!!
Amazing movie
very good, I liked it
The 17th century was quite a wild & colorful time in European-History
got 2 say this scene like the rest of the movie is mind blowing on magic mushrooms....watched it on tv 2day tripping ...it the best movie everrrrrrrrrrrrrrwow
Very insightful comment.

I think Allyn Ferguson captured the flavor of Louis XIV's majesty even better than Lully could have done himself.
Matthew Dean it is Lully he took a Lully piece and composed it

He looked fabulous. My favorite look was the purple ensemble. Patrick was stunning in period costume.
I LOVE DIES MOVIE!💛👑
Where can I watch the full movie? Any suggestions.

Thanks for your suggesting . I understand French, so I will search into website.
Yes, good luck!
I think they got to film at Fouquet's real place.

who knows the composer and title of this music, thanks
Richard Lully

Also the song is based on joan baptiste lullys piece called triophez genereux alcide you can hear the similarities which both pieces

That's the 1998 one with leanerdo decaprio
Perhaps is this a different version? Anyway, playing double roles, Chamberlain performed all the scenes perfectly. His expressions are very vivid !
@LexPhilogus ...Are you sure it's not mainly the crown and the funky wig?
This scene is in the gardens of Vaux Le Vicomte
Klasika...
Vive Le Roi!
KRASNY FILM A VUNE
Not his usual style is it? ;-)
cool
@LaBelleDanse That's pretty much it
And remember...if it is not baroque then it need not be repaired.
@LexPhilogus LOLL
ano
an excellent film, but one gets the feeling that this is'nt really a part of the richard lester series.much gloomier and less inventive.
"Drag Queen" ?!
Such ignorance!
This is baroque music... but not baroque ballet... but a bad interpretation of it.
