I have kept this my head canon for Thomas for quite a long time.
Thomas was built in 1916 for a parade for the 70th anniversary of the LBSCR. However, the plans for the parade fell through to the war, and so Thomas was sent to work. The other E2s mocked him for being different. Eventually, a man by the name of Sit Toppham Hatt ordered an E2 for his newly built railway. The manager sent Thomas instead of a normal E2 to get him out the way. His files were destroyed after he had left, thus explaining why there was no 11th E2 ever recorded.

Here to expand on that James headcanon
    1. James actually quite likes tank engines. He’s good friends with Thomas, talks to Percy (albeit only once in the RWS), and obviously is good friends with Duck. The only small engine he really despises is Toby, and is only rude to the others when Gordon and Henry are around.
    2. James is afraid of the trucks, and bumps them in the hopes that they’ll be afraid of him. Once he conquers the hill in Troublesome Trucks, he’s rude to the trucks, but only in the hopes that he can turn the tables and make them fear him.
    3. James is only vain and rude because of Gordon. Before James and the Express, James is actually jealous of Gordon and considers himself lower than him. Once Gordon befriends him, that’s when he starts putting on an image so he’s not shoved out of the hierarchy. When he’s not around Gordon, he’s a lot nicer (most of the time).
    4. James is often rude to Henry because he’s scared that, after Henry’s rebuild, Henry will shove James out of the big 3, so James is constantly making fun of him or trying to one up him.
    5. James actually likes Edward after Old Iron, but never says anything about it. In Edward’s Exploit, James doesn’t join in the insults, but only says “Did you see him straining?”. On other occasions when Gordon and Henry are mean about Edward, James also either isn’t there or doesn’t join in.

My headcanon is that Diesel 10 used to be with the other experimental engines seen in Journey Beyond Sodor. He was initially a crane engine like Harvey but was taken and modified into his current design with Pinchy instead of a hook. His hatred of Steamies comes from the defeatist attitude of the other experimental engines and him being repaired into a functional engine combining into a "Steamies can't do anything, Diesels can do everything" mindset.

Here is one of my favorite head cannons. After the Fat Controller bought Oliver in 1967, he was in hot water with British Railways, since they couldn’t get the money for scrapping Oliver. At this point, the North Western Railway was still very much its own thing. It had been the only railway not to amalgamate in 1923, although people don’t count it as such since it is so closely tied with the LMS, people just lump it in. The NWR became part of BR in 1948, and in my head cannon, all the engines would have had early BR crests somewhere on them. The Fat Controller was worried that if the engines were still owned by BR in later years, then they might not keep them around. And so in 1968, the Sodor Island Preservation Society was born, and they, as well as the Fat Controller and other Sudrian people, banded enough money together and bought the railway, engines, and rights to run trains. So I’m 1968, the NWR became an independent railway. You could just say that later engines like Rosie or Neville were on loan from other preservation railways, although I like to think that many were bought at some point.

I've always had a headcannon that when James was following Thomas through the abandoned quarry in a miller era episode, that it was James' thinking place to go to when he was feeling upset, he's afraid to talk to Gordon or Henry about them so he just vents in the abandoned quarry.
I've always imagined that Rosie wanted to be painted red because she wanted to change up her look, she didn't feel that her pink livery fit anymore so she wanted the next best thing to Pink, Red.
And my explanation as to why Nia was homeless when Thomas found her in Kenya was because her manager didn't have enough money to keep the railway going so he sold his engines, hence why her shed was taken down, and why she inhabits a small section of the railway in the middle of nowhere hoping she'll find some work, Thomas just happened to be there at the right time.
Rebecca was always bullied by the engines on the mainland for having a weird shape and her wheelslips, which is why she tries to be so nice to everyone, even those that aren't nice to her back, Neville suffered the same thing which is why he has such a low self-esteem, him and Rebecca are actually cousins since they were built by the same person but different classes, however they both share the same wheel-slippage problem.
I'd like to think that Whiff use to be a very clean and spiff engine but he was arrogant about how smart he looked but when he had an accident one day it damaged his eyes, hence why he needs glasses, and was punished by having to work at the dump, at first he didn't like it but over time he liked working with garbage due to how important he thought it was and from then on, he became a rubbish engine.
Marklin (the Marklin engine) was brought to the Sodor railway during WWII, they're only friend was Edward and they often worked at night or the early morning which is why no one really saw them or knew of them, they weren't put in the RWS books because they didn't want to become famous and they were rather camera shy, but they allowed small off-screen cameos in the TVS as long as their face wasn't shown.
Fearless Freddie was actually one of the engines that came and went on the Mid Sodor Railway, hence why Sir Handel knows him and why he's happy to see him again, him and Sir Handel use to race all the time much to Duke's chagrin.

I have a more morbid theory as to HIT Era Skarloey and Rheneas. In the HIT universe, Skarloey and Rheneas were both scrapped, and replaced by Sir Handel and Peter Sam. When the Railway's fortunes began to look up, the Owner decided to have two replicas of the original Skarloey Brothers built to commemorate the two engines who made the preservation of the line possible. The replicas were reckless and childlike, and their antics lead the former Mid Sodor engines to adopt more of a parental attitude. This is meant to explain why Sir Handel acts like an old man in the HIT Era, he was forced to grow up by the new Skarloey Bros.

This isn’t a major headcanon, but one that I’ve been thinking about for a while, nonetheless:
Frankie cried crocodile tears (when someone cries as a false display of sadness in order to gain sympathy) at the end of Journey Beyond Sodor. It’s so weird that she went from being hell-bent on keeping Thomas and James hostage to just giving up and breaking down into tears. Plus, her crying seemed kinda fake. My headcanon is that she faked it in order to make the others feel pity for her and to get extra help at the Steelworks, further showing how manipulative she can be.

I thought of a theory about why Derek wasn’t referred to by name in “Double Teething Troubles”. Because he didn’t have one yet! For Stephen, I would agree that he could've been one of those replicas of the real Rocket as the latter was preserved at the National Railway Museum (formally the Science Museum). I would love to see a story where Stephen was telling a few of the other engines about his history, but then accidentally spills the beans about who he actually is causing both his popularity ruined and his fans being cross that he wasn't the actual engine. He feels miserable as he started going through an identity crisis until Glynn and Millie comfort him that no matter what happens, he will always carry on the spirit of how the famous Rocket is and that he is still a valuable engine.

I like the explaination of George's hatred for railways, but here's what I would change:
Instead of George having a "girlfriend steamroller," it was, in fact, his first driver, who was clumsy, but took great care of George.
One morning, George was tasked with flattening asphalt which had just been laid. What used to be a branch-line was said to be a one-way-road shortcut from the village to the local school buildings.
George sat in a small shed in the engine yard. He overheard the engines. They spoke of how bumpy and rotten it was, and were glad to see it ripped up, as their conductor was cheap and made the engines take any route regardless of the state with little to no repairs done on lines. They spoke of how nice it would be for every bad line to be tore up, and one engine joked that the director should turn every line into a roadway, and rebuild the engines as vehicles so that they would never have to rock-and-roll again!
George had no opinion on the railways. His job was to flatten things, and he spoke primarily to the men that worked with him. Just then, a man dressed in similar clothing to his driver walked inside, climbed aboard his footplate, oiled him and started his engine. George had never seen this man before. He growled suspiciously.
"Are you a vandal? Have you come to steal me? Driver says he'll track me down no matter what, try all you like!"
The driver was startled. He leaned out of the left side and spoke to him.
"Heavens no! I'm your driver! What has gotten into you, boy? Has your fitter not told you? your driver has been in a railway accident. He is injured, and cannot drive you anymore! I've come to replace him."
George was silent for the rest of the morning. As he went to work paving roads, he thought and thought, and the more he thought, the angrier he grew.
"This wouldn't have happened if there were roads instead of rails. Why can't engines be careful? Why should there even be railways? We have lorries! Railways are no good. Those engines were right. We *should* turn them into roads."
The next morning saw George the Steamroller angrily flattening the new road. As he did to, he took his anger out by chanting "Railways are no good! Turn them into roads! Pull them up! Turn them into roads! Railways are no good! Turn them into roads!"
Nowadays, if George isn't yelling, he's mumbling, but he's always saying the same thing.

I have a good headcanon for Big Mickey.
After his fatal fall in the Tugs episode "Munitions," Big Mickey's remains were recovered by the salvage crew the day after the fire at the dockyard and moved to the inlet with all the other old and worn out cranes, where OJ later came across what was left of Big Mickey in the episode "Ghosts." After many years of being exposed to the elements, Big Mickey was purchased by the Brendam Bay shipping company on Sodor, who needed a large crane for their increasingly busy dockyard. After the purchase, Big Mickey's remains were dismantled, shipped overseas to Sodor, and restored. Once the restoration was complete, Big Mickey was reborn as the first large crane at Brendam Docks. However, he often got very lonely and thought of his friends back home in America at Bigg City Port. To make matters worse, he had to deal with Cranky when he was placed next to him a few years later. Big Mickey's loneliness got worse since Cranky never made an attempt to speak to him. Big Mickey never said a word during his time on Sodor until a few years into the 21st century, when a third crane named Carly was placed between him and Cranky. This event finally allowed Big Mickey to open up to the other two cranes, who all soon became good friends with each other.

I have one. The Grand Opening and Oliver’s Find take place around the same time. That’s why Harold the helicopter was late with the mail. He had engine troubles earlier that day on the same day the new line on the Skarloey Railway was opening. And, considering there was a storm the previous night, this ties in with the whole storm thing in season 7. I know it does have a few plot holes, but I like it. Also, I have another one about The Grand Opening. So after a few months of the red balloon only operating on the standard gauge line, STH wanted to test it on the narrow gauge railway too. That’s why he insisted on the balloon even though they could’ve taken the car, a train, etc. And after the whole incident with him landing in a tree, he declared the balloon unsafe and that’s why we never see it again. Confusing, I know but I like it.

A special headcanon: If you look on the map, there's a line that runs along the northern end of Sodor. I created the "North Sodor Railway," a government operation. This would explain why Hiro appears, he wasn't going to work on the Northwestern Railway, but the North Sodor Railway. Other engines I've included are: The Marklin engine (whom I named "Marklin"), Puffa (Tugs props in TTTE), 98462 (Alfred), 87546 (Crovan), Little Owl, the red engine (Eagle, because Winston is already taken), and a TUGS fan character (with credit to the original creator), Atticus. The line was absorbed into the Northwestern Railway, and the engines were split, with Hiro getting abandoned, Marklin showing up in the Diesel Works (before his preservation), and the other engines heading into storage in various sheds along the North Sodor Railway

I've got a head canon to explain the disappearing drivers: engines have limited control of their engines: they can "clamp down" on their regulators and brakes some, but that's about it. In Thomas comes to breakfast his regulator is thrown open by the cleaner, he has too much pressure to be able to stop.
Non - faceless steam engines are also more efficient than faceless ones as they *breathe* , superheating their fireboxes by way of extra airflow.

At the end of Thomas and the trucks you can see James coming through with a goods train, I’m guessing from vicarstown. The fat controller was proud of James for doing this with no problems and he became a nwr engine. This is why the narrator says that James had his crash on his first day because the trial does it count. On the day of his crash Henry bumps the trucks. My headcanon on why the engines have faces:
There is a rare plant mainly found on islands called the Shining Thyme, and it produces a strange amoeba known as the Gold Dust amoeba, that somehow survives off of magnetic force, so it sticks itself to metal and duplicates, taking control of whatever machine the metal is used for. Thought it has to experience some kind of motion to keep the amoeba alive. It also somehow copies the genetics of the last person that made direct contact with the amoeba before it took control of the machine, giving the colony of amoeba a personality. Scientists are still trying to understand the origin of the Gold Dust amoeba and its biological makeup.

Since I didn't find that community post in time, I'll comment on my headcanon here.
(I'm gonna be using The Unlucky Tug's map as a reference)
    Duncan was a Mid-Sodor engine.
Duncan was actually the last engine to be bought by the Mid-Sodor. Duke was first, then Smudger, Stuart, Falcon, and Bertram. After they were bought, an extension was made from the Valesbridge to the coal mine on Thomas' branch line. Since there was too much work for the five engines to balance at the mine, a new engine was bought named Duncan. The only time he would leave the coal mine was when the Mid-Sodor needed an extra engine. One of these times Rheneas needed some maintenance done. A girl by the name of Nancy was polishing Skarloey. Duncan was map about not being polished, and he stopped on a viaduct. He was pulled to the next station by Skarloey and had a stern talking to by the owner of the Skarloey railway. After this, he became a much nicer engine, and he became good friends with Skarloey. One day, a storm hit the Mid-Sodor and Skarloey railway. Duncan got into an accident and needed to be repaired, however, the Mid-Sodor's workshop was damaged during the storm as well. The Skarloey offered for Duncan to be fixed at their workshop so long as the Mid-Sodor pay for the repairs. During this same storm, a bridge on the Skarloey got damaged. Rheneas got stuck on it, and a scared but brave Skarloey rescued him. Soon after, the Mid-Sodor closed. The Coal Mine was able to stay in business, and they bought Duncan to work at their mine. After the events of Put Upon Percy (which in my headcanon happened a lot earlier in the series) the mine temporarily closed. Duncan suffered some serious memory loss due to the mines collapsing. Due to this, he became much more rude and bouncy, forgetting about what happened to him when he did so in his youth. In order to pay for repairs, the mine sold Duncan to the Skarloey. Skarloey doesn't immediately remember Duncan, but after seeing him in person Skarloey tries to talk to him about days past, and about how he was back before the Mid-Sodor closed. Duncan calls the old engine crazy and says that his old age is catching up to him. Duncan puffs away, leaving a saddened Skarloey to wonder what happened to his old friend.
This headcanon was made for the sole person of retconning The Old Bridge out of the modern canon. I had to go through this much effort just to get that dogshit episode to make sense.

What if the Hit Era is a TV show? I mean yes, it IS a TV show but I mean within the lore, it’s all a TV show. That’d probably be one of the best explanations for all of the out of character moments and just the general shift from the Classic Series to the Hit Era. I think this would also mean Season 7 is a TV show in the lore because of how the US received it. This would also explain the five new characters that were crammed in that season as the Hit Era is also very well-known for doing that. I guess this means you could connect Season 6 in with this theory too as it has the same style as the UK Season 7. It’s also when the square, box-like look changed to fit a wider screen so that could be hinting that from that point onwards, it’s all not real - if the insane, childlike predicaments the engines encounter from didn’t already hint towards that 🤷🏼‍♂️

    - One is that Bertram is Smudger, and instead of in the railways series cannon where he failed (as no 2) and the mine collapsed, in the TV show, he saved the miners, earning the nickname Warrior, and being allowed to be rebuilt into an engine, becoming Bertram. When the line closed, he was hidden away to protect him until Toby discovered him, as the miners were repaying the favour of him saving their lives.
    - The other is that a Thomas multiverse exists, and that explains the different Thomas', and Lady is a multiversal being holding it all together, amd sometimes appears in timelines if she needs to, to keep everything together.

I have a head cannon of Stepney's branch line in the tv series (Classics) being the Kirk Ronan branch.
Let me explain: After Stepney's short service from Crovans Gate to Bluebell Valley, Kirk Ronan station was opened in "A Better View for Gordon" and Possibly Rolf's Castle. When we reach series 6, Stepney has been seen consistently passing Rolf's Castle. The Fat Controller has Edward supporting Stepney on the loop line in "Edward the Very Useful Engine", which goes from Kirk Ronan, to Rolf's Castle, then Crovans Gate and finally Bluebell valley before looping back to Crovans Gate for the return journey to Kirk Ronan. It's one my few head cannons that I like, even though Kellsthorpe Road is not a station on this line.

This is an alternative head-canon in my mind, You see here, Edward was sent to the scrap-yard to find another tank engine. Then he approaches Thomas. Thomas tried to call his name. Edward did hear him and Thomas told him his name to Edward. and Edward got to know Thomas. Afterwards. Thomas told his backstory and he dreamt about working on Sodor. Edward was honestly surprised and Thomas begged him to travel him to the North Western Railway. And so Edward did. Pretty much Edward saving Thomas from scrap. and once they arrived at Sodor. Sir Topham Hatt sent Thomas to be repainted and mended.

  • @NWR81

One head canon I thought of not too long ago, was one to answer why there are so many scrapped e2’s across Sodor. This idea was that in the early 1900’s when the NWR was formed, they were inspired by the E2 design and had built 30 of these “baby” E2 tanks. They were sent to the mines and yards to work the line (if you like Timothy was the first one and died when crashing off the viaduct when it was being constructed). Eventually all of these engines were scrapped and left where they worked. Yet in 1923, The Fat Controller remembered this successful design and built Thomas to work as station pilot. It doesn’t really make any sense but seeing all the scrapped Thomas models in the show made me think this.

Percy and Thomas are stated to be best friends in the CGI era, but it doesn't make sense how since in the Model era, they're depicted as just two co-workers who aren't fully friends since they tease and insult eachother a lot, but throughout are on good terms. My headcanon is that Thomas and Percy had decided to spend more time with eachother in order to try getting along more and to learn more about each other. Through time they both began to grow more fond of the other, slowly becoming good friends, add on spending more time hanging out, eventually becoming best friends.

Theory: the Fat Controller died between seasons 2 & 3 and his son who much resembles him inherited the railway (just like in the books) hence the change in narration from Ringo Starr to Michael Angelis.
The engines don't seem to know because they don't; they often have a hard time telling humans apart (and are not aware of this) which also explains why everyone on Sodor kinda looks the same (it's how the engines see them.) Either that or that's down to island inbreeding. Maybe it's both!

And the scrapyard from Rusty to the Rescue is actually the smelters considering the Unlucky Tug has narrow gauge tracks going there on his map. I've got a few head-canons, mostly pertaining to the Railway Series. Here's my personal favorite of the bunch:
Gordon is _not_ an A1 from Sir Nigel Gresley, not after 1945. He's an A1/1 from Edward Thompson, the same redesign that was done to Great Northern.
Basically, is conjugated valve gear was always an issue for Sir Topham Hatt and he did plan to fix it himself (as described in the lore book by Awdry) but it ended up not happening due to the outbreak of WW2. After the war, Gordon's valve gear was still an issue, but STH didn't have the money to do the overhaul himself. That's when Edward Thompson approached him. He was currently rebuilding Great Northern, and decided to offer Hatt the option to have the same rebuild done to Gordon. Hatt accepted, and soon Gordon was an A1/1.
The main reason I came up with this is... well, I just like Thompson's A1/1 more than a regular Gresley A1. I like the longer smoke box and the be dome, plus I liked the dark blue Great Northern got. Only issue with this is the little interaction between Gordon and Scotsman in EE, but that scene could easily be reinterpreted to apply to an Thompson rebuild.

The classic series (seasons 1-6/7), early HIT era (7-9), Miller Era (10-16), Brenner Era (17-21) and BWBA all take place in completely different timelines. Thus, any discrepancies between these distinct eras of the show's writing and lore, such as characterizations of characters, the geography of the Island of Sodor, etc. can be easily explained without the need for complicated retcons.
And also _All Engines Go!_ was a fever dream Diesel 10 had after Mr. Conductor put sugar in his fuel tank.

First, I would love to see a second episode or more. Second, my head-canon is that the engines can drive themselves (which explains why the crew are stupid in the HIT era) but they need to learn how to control themselves (which explains why Thomas thinks he could brake in Thomas Comes to Breakfast) and during stroll along the line and pulling small trains they don’t need they’re crew, but they do when pulling long trains and passengers.

    • @lukechristmas3951
      @lukechristmas3951 2 года назад +3

I have thought about something similar. To explain the lack of crews that have happened, I believe that the engines and other vehicles have the ability to drive themselves but like human muscles and how babies learn to walk, the engines are only able to gain the strength they need to run crewless as they age but even then that takes a lot of their energy so they still have crews present when possible.

In case you make a sequel to this, here is my personal headcanon for William, or, as we all know him as, Billy the Orange Tank Engine.
We all know he is one of the most unlikable characters in the history of Thomas & Friends, but I've made up my own canon as to why he is such an unpleasant character. It begins like this:
William worked at some shunting yards nearby a big city station, and he was the pilot. He was nothing but a good, charming and polite guy, who'd always put in effort into his work. The big engines that would pull the trains would harass William and say he was useless, a waste of space and worse. Eventually this bullying was normalized for every engine and people stopped calling him his real name and started calling him "Silly Billy", with the controller joining in the harassment and forcing Willian to somewhat change his name to be his infamous nickname. At this point, William, now only recognized as Billy, was becoming depressed and was doubting if kindness, let alone good would help him solve anything. He would soon meet what seemed to be a nice engine, who "cared" for him. In truth, this engine wanted Billy to look even more terrible. He gave Billy bad advice, like acting rude and vain to "impose dominance", get into physical harassment whenever he needed to relieve stress, and worst of all, disobey anyone and everything, and do work his was. Billy, being vulnerable and morally questioning good, took the advice, and soon he went downhill, with the bully engines being mad, the sensitive engines got trauma from him and passengers gave endless complaints. It was so bad that it got to the point where the controller wanted to outright kill the orange tank engine. The fat controller came in to the other controller's office one day to see if there were any engines that he could buy, and the other controller immediately gave him the option of Billy, seeing the chance of getting rid of him for good. Without giving in much hesitation, Billy accepted, knowing he'd finally leave the place that gave him torture. This is why he's such a brat in the infamous episode "Don't Be Silly Billy", because of the engine that influenced him, and because he thinks good behavior doesn't solve anything due to multiple bad experiences.
Now I do have a arc where he redeems himself and manages to better himself, but that's still in the works for me.
BTW If you're wondering why I'm calling Billy by the name William, well that's because Billy's real name is William. Look up the Thomas the Tank wiki for info.

My headcanon for Oliver is that he once had a few encounters with Duck on his old line, and the two did not get along well. Oliver had a cocky attitude back then, and didn't heed any advice Duck had for him. When he was eventually assigned to banking duties he met Toad, who had worked with Duck before, and spoke highly of him, and would always stick up for him whenever Oliver began complaining. The pair would frequently butt heads whenever Oliver was to bank a train with Toad, until one unusually heavy train was due through, and Oliver was assigned to banking. To his dismay, Toad was on that train. An argument began as usual, but then Oliver's safety valve burst, and the train broke away. Thinking quickly, Toad slammed on his brakes, and shouted at Oliver to do the same. The two were able to slow the train down, but not enough to avoid a crash. Meanwhile Duck was resting after his last train of the day, when the alarm was sounded, warning of a runaway. Duck bravely moved onto Oliver and Toad's line, waiting until the last possible moment to begin moving. As the runaway slowly caught up to him, he slammed on his brakes, and with his help, Oliver, Duck, and Toad were able to bring the train to a stop. Oliver apologized to both Duck and Toad that night, and gained a new respect for both of them. And when he was eventually sold for scrap, the first place he went was to find Toad, knowing the same fate would likely meet his friend.

I want to share my strangest head canon which is my take on Marklin. It was a German engine bought in 1940 by Sir Topham Hatt. He did not know Marklin was a German spy. Marklin was found out in 1944 and was scraped and the scraped remain of Marklin was abandoned. The final remains of Marklin was finally scraped in the 70s. When TTTE season 1 was made they bought a model train of Marklin’s class which was used as a spare engine to pull trains to make Sodor look busier. The team bought that type of engine because of the idea that if season 1 would be a success they would have to make more engines for season 2 which would make a spare engine useless. So they bought a model train which could be made into a scrap model that would be historically accurate. When Day Of The Diesels was being made the animators heard of Marklin’s tale, so they modeled a scrap engine after Marklin.

    A headcanon for Alfred/98462.
When Henry arrived in 1923 he was prone to breakdowns so a new engine was loaned (because the NWR just bought Henry for a lot and didn’t have a lot of money) from the newly formed LNER.
The engine, 98462, arrived in 1924 and took Henry’s trains and other’s when they were away or I’ll.
In 1924 Gordon arrived from the same railway and they made good friends.
The next year 98462’s loans were paid off and he was given a name by the NWR.
He chose Alfred, after Alfred John Hill, the last director of the GER, his first railway before grouping.
    So yeah

My head canon for sir handles absence for the model series is that while Sir Topham Hat sent him to the quarry the reason why the hit era portrays sir Handel as a wise old man is because he was secretly kept at the quarry while a replacement for him was old, also having some real life sense because the corris railway has a lot of “Peter Sams” and “Sir Handels”

Derek and Boco being sent to the other railway as missionaries is great. I mean that explains how we got Emily, Arthur, Murdoch, Billy, Neville, Molly and Flora. I’m now guessing that Sydney and Paxton are also missionaries and could also be the reason for steam engines like Ryan, Rebecca, and Timothy were brought.

In addition to the James head cannon about him not really being vain I’d like to take into account the fact that really he is just a modified 0-6-0 no bigger than Donald and Douglas and probably feels hyper insecure about that fact already as he is the smallest of the “big engines” as they say and probably would be terrified of people found out the truth about him.

My fiancé and I have a headcanon attempting to explain both generally how the locomotives are alive and certain specifics about how things like maintenance work.
The basic gist is that the engines are awakened by soul magic and that the faces aren’t real, at least physically. When these machines are built, the workers literally put their blood, sweat, and tears into their work, perhaps even some of their souls. It all combines to give the engine its own unique soul, which is then projected as an illusory face over the smokebox door. Of course, the door must be opened regularly for maintenance, so the face can be dismissed and resummoned at will.
As an explanation of why other railways had little qualms about scrapping their older locomotives, we suggest that the faces can only be seen by those who come to appreciate the magic of a steam locomotive. The sounds, almost like the engine is breathing as it waits at the platform, enshrouded in its own steam; the smell of water vapor and coal dust in the air; the sheer mechanical might expressed perfectly in deep chuffs from the stack, slowly gaining tempo as it pulls away. It almost feels… alive. And then, it is.
The executives (or politicians, with nationalization) deciding to scrap all the steam locomotives had never discovered for themselves, or had forgotten, that magic, and so see a blank smokebox on just another piece of equipment.

Here’s a great headcanon of mine: The old quarry that Diesel tricked Percy into going into in Wild Water Rescue is in fact Boulder Quarry. This is evident by the quarry being closed down after Boulder destroyed the shed. So when Percy goes to the quarry, it had been abandoned for some years now.

As a dark add-on to the missionary theory, i feel like when they got to the other railway to convince them, the other diesels turned against the two being that diesels seemingly hate steamies. And because of that were put on line for scrap. BoCo probably was spared, but Derek wasn’t, being that salty has Derek’s horn. What happened to BoCo if we never see him again but didn’t get scrapped? He could’ve been sent to actually work on the other railway being he has no problems running like Derek

    • @rmgilyard

That’s insanely impossible! Diesels couldn’t catch others to scrap, besides there are some diesels who don’t believe a tree am is bad nonsenseZ

Many of the engines seen once or twice aren't owned by The Fat Controller, rather locomotives owned by private/heritage railways on Sodor to be repaired at the steam works and are seen on trial runs/test runs.

One of my headcanons is err… more of a theory.
What if the TVS Mid-Sodor Railway never existed?
This clearly isn’t present in the RWS, but the MSR is only referenced in four episodes, and after S4 it’s never referenced again.
What if it IS just a story?
What if Duke and Smudger were never a thing?
What if Duke wasn’t ever there in the first place?
What if the MSR is just a series of stories?
    *Fiction?*
And also, my headcanon for Stepney.
Stepney came to Sodor on his visit, but while he was there, a catastrophe event occurred on the Bluebell Railway, like a forest fire.
So his stay on Sodor was slightly extended.
However, when he actually left, probably to be on a Railtour somewhere else like Gloucester, he was kidnapped by what I can presume are the Ironworks diesels before the Ironworks actually opened and they were just BR diesels.
Left in the scrapyard, cue the Unlucky Tug’s headcanon for how Rusty reached the Vicarstown goods depot, and Stepney stays on the Norramby line until the end of S7, when he FINALLY goes back to the Bluebell Railway, and who knows, maybe BoCo goes with him and stays there, explaining why he never appears again or something.
And maybe Derek guards him or something to prevent another kidnapping.
( also, Thomas is a Nelson Reid 0-6-0T, AKA the Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway’s Thomas, or should I say Lord Roberts )

A slightly strange headcanon: The engine Rusty saves is NOT Stepney. Instead it is 32644 Fulham. After Fulham got sent to the scrapyard, his driver painted him up in the Improved Green livery, but messed up and put the name Stepney on him. 32644 remains on Sodor to this day.

i don’t remember where i first heard it but i still believe smudger was turned back into an engine when the mining company needed one and was rebuilt into a different model because his parts were canibalized like godreds from the culdee fell railway. he was then renamed bertram and learned from his mistakes and was a reliable engine

I have a headcanon that Samson once worked on the Sodor & Mainland Railway, considering his similar shape to the boxy S&M engines. After the railway went under, Sampson was left on a siding like Glynn, but was found by Marion, (Again, like Glynn), and was repainted and got the number 15.

This isn’t really a headcanon, but this relates to another franchise that is set in the UK, Harry Potter.
On Pottermore, it was confirmed that the Ministry of Magic stole the locomotive and coaches for the Hogwarts Express from Crew works. There are no exact dates, so I pictured if both Harry Potter and Thomas occupied the same universe that Henry was being overhauled at Crew when the Hogwarts Express was stolen. Just picture Henry’s horror at some people turning a freshly built steam engine invisible.
Also, having the two worlds exist as one can explain how Thomas and his friends have faces to begin with. Some squibs are workmen at train workshops and randomly their dormant magic causes machinery to gain sentience.
