Absolutely Nailed it with this review. Babysitting a MUST with the first mapping. (I have the D7). Mirrors to the floor are this vacuums kryptonite. I Had the Neato D5 for 4 years and I decided to upgrade to Roborock s7 maxV Ultra. Yes, the Neato falls behind in terms of navigation and getting stuck, but in my eyes it's still number 1 in terms of vacuuming ability. I have 4 cats, and there's just no comparison: Neato ends every run with an almost full dust bin, while the Roborock barely picks up half of that. Even after a Roborock vac+mop run, I can still feel some dust on floor if I'm barefoot, which was never my experience with Neato.

As an owner of a D7, when I first saw this I was wondering what was new beside the design. Looking at your review the issues that I have with my D7 are also in the D8, so doesn't seem like much have changed really. And it will continue to do so again and again and again ... All in all I think there is much better options out there.
I have been a Neato fan for close to 10 years. I’ve had 4 of them over these years. Yesterday I moved on and bought a Deebot. I just really got tired of feeling like my old XV were better than the new D4, plus getting stuck everywhere, plus having to run over and over again until it mapped our house. Still a Neato fan, but until they come out with something that can really be matched to some other competitors, I won’t be buying another one so soon.
I am currently in the market for a robot vacuum and I really appreciate your videos and reviews. That being said one brand of vacuum I have not noticed you ever mention or review, I may have just missed it, is Miele. Now, while putting aside the onset performance, the reason I bring it up is that when discussing with more than one vacuum dealer and repair they often bring up that there is only one brand that they have not heard any complaints over and never have to fix, and that is Miele, their performance being top notch, they last for very, very long time with out any problems, and they have great customer support should something get broken (not fail or break down). I know in my experience that my family has had one of their canister vacuums for I believe over 20 years now and it operates basically the same as when my parents got it. Now I know that there is no really good way to test longevity and performance over time so that can't really be part of a review, but as I said before I am currently in the market for a robot vacuum and I know that they have one now and given my confidence in their brand I would really like to know how it compares with other current available models.
I have a Miele Scout RX2. It cleans well, but is dumb, frequently getting stuck in stupid ways. The unit has been replaced a few times, and the side brushes stop spinning frequently. The app is next to useless. Avoid.
I think it’s Vacuum Wars duty as the leading robot vacuum review on RUclips (possibly world) to send a link to this video and a copy of the comments section to Neato.
I just did a tear-down of the D8. Complete overhaul of the electronics with several key things resolved such as the side brush motor is now gear drive (no more o-ring belt). From a hardware perspective, they have been working hard it seems. Will see how the firmware and software evolves since it is a new platform.
Neato by far cleans better than most of the robot vacuums - I find its practically superior to Deebot, for example, in cleaning floors. That said the cons you mentioned here with it getting stuck and being "dumb" in freeing itself is a problem ongoing since the release of the Connected series units. Neato boasts its D-shape, but it causes it to get stuck more, cause more damage to trim, furniture, and walls, and they clearly haven't fixed the algorithm that helps the robot get around advanced corners and furniture. All signs point to Neato not fixing this issue (for some reason) so I wouldn't be able to recommend this vacuum myself at this point. And while LIDAR is superior in general navigation, a camera allows for object recognition and avoidance. A combo of the two is really the best move moving forward for robot manufacturers. This D8 is effectively a visual re-design of the D7 but doesn't seem to offer much superiority. It's a shame. Anyway, great video as always - and thank you.
Had a D7 and fortunately, a friend who worked at Neato got if for me at a vastly reduced price. It vacuumed OK, but a lot of "schmutz" from wool carpet stuck in the brush. The Roborock seems a lot smarter and gives less trouble. Mr. Neato was re-homed. It would be interesting to see how well robots clean around things. I recently moved and when I picked up my desk, there was a huge amount of dog hair the robot did not get that was unseen when the desk was in place.
Jeez it’s unfortunate they haven’t fixed the pinch traps. Such a simple fix and it’s something that’s seen in their parent company’s robots, Vorwerk. Granted, you’re correct, once you map the house it performs phenomenally
@DikoMan Vorwerk bought them way back in 2017... which also coincides with the point where Neato stopped being innovative...🤔 Also, Vorwerk is the most prestigious manufacturer of vacuums in Germany.
Great review. Looks like the D8 has the same problems as my D3's, so I wouldn't expect a software fix to improve its navigation issues since they've been there for years, models, and generations. The one thing that made the D3 much better was buying a larger battery for it. It's well worth it, and something that VacuumWars should include in its reviews is the frequency and price of battery replacement. The original D3 battery lasted between 12-18 months before it started giving me issues I realized was related to the battery. Also, Recharge and Resume functionality isn't the same as capacity when you need the vacuum to be finished in time to for you to log in remotely from work and can't have it restarting its cleaning in the middle of a Zoom meeting.
I just returned the D8 after 2 weeks of babysitting. It cleans really well, it just gets lost and bangs it’s head too many times. I experienced the same as this video, if you lifted it to move it after it got stuck, expect it to get lost. It’s software just isn’t ready. IMO it’s the best high pile carpet cleaner though. I ran the old D85 and it can navigate better.
The D shape also makes it better with larger debris, like dry beans.. screws etc (stuff that i have laying around here a lot :). The vacuums that have the brush in the center will end up having larger items lodged between the bot and the floor. There is a big benefit in having a large brush in the front.
I had a Neato D85 and switched to Ecovacs Deebot 930.. because i wanted an app for room select cleaning. And it was a really disappointing switch.. going to replace it with a neato D7. Neatos are really good, even the old ones.
Excellent review as always. My biggest complaint about robots without an external bin to empty itself after each run is that the bin gets full too quickly especially if you have a dog. My neato D4 ‘s bin fills quickly up after doing the kitchen, lounge and small dining area so I hope that Neato releases a robot one day with an external bin system with a Lidar and AI camera..
I don't expect them to fix their navigation issues ever. This has been around since 2019 when I got the D6 and is why I returned it and got another brand. Their app is also inferior to alternatives.
I have a D7 and I bought an i7+ because I wanted the self cleaning feature but found out the i7+ isn't nearly as good as my old D7 on picking up pets hair from the carpet. Ended up returning the i7+ and bought a D10. The first run was very annoying. It's a shame neato still doesn't have the self cleaning feature, but at least it aces on the main goal, leaving the floor spotless.
I run my D7 regularly, but I hate that even the slightest movement on the base means I have to remap the whole floor. And when I do remap, that babysitting... I really wish Neato could do something about this, but it doesn't look like they will.
Very interesting machine. I bought my d7 after watching your great review of it a few years ago. I liked it but we always forgot to empty it so it would leave streaks of dirt on the floor. The brushroll also tangles really bad for me. So we replaced it with the shark IQ robot a little over a year ago and we have liked it. It’s not a perfect robot. It does have some issues. But we have liked it for it’s value and auto empty features. We do want to upgrade in the future. But I haven’t seen something super worth it yet.
Can you please do a review of the app? I loved my d5 and was bitterly disappointed in the d7 and how they seemingly abandoned the "old" app not adding features in years. And now the new app is incompatible to the legacy robots??? If you do an app review could you please look at features like selecting multiple rooms, live progress, and other things worth mentioning?
The problem with your "Deep Clean" Test is in that tiny area the robot goes over the same area say 20 times in a normal vacuuming run it MIGHT go over it twice.
I have the slightly older D5 and the Floorplan setup and Floorplan related stuff is horrible. I have my unit in my dining room. If a dining room chair is moved 6in from its normal position it doesn't recognize the Floorplan. Also like you said times when I changed furniture I had to redo the entire initial Floorplan process over and it sometimes takes many tries and a lot of babysitting. I wish neato would at least offer a "Floorplan run" that doesn't clean just goes around to map like another robot you reviewed kinda recently does. It's my only gripe of the D5. Based on the fact it's been 3 or 4 years and no improvements to the d5 I personally don't have faith in them to fix the d8 either sadly
A few years ago I got a Neato to replace my Hombot and, while suction was better, I was quite disappointed overall. Navigation was reasonably mostly good but it would always reverse into the wall (why?? having lidar it knows exactly where it is). It was louder and the exhaust in the back would blow dust around. Sold it after a week.
When do you think you will review the new shark Wandvac? Seems like its approaching the same market as the dyson omniglide being an ultra light quick cleaner, but it has carpet capability as well.
I've been running a D7 for a few years now. Seeing same issues as this video.. getting wedged under chairs and tables with a foot rest.. Agree the software is a bit dumb when it gets stuck. Bin fills up way too quickly on carpet.. The most annoying part is that the mapping system rarely ever works.. I have tried many many times relearning the room, making sure furniture is in the same place, trying new positions for the base, cleaning all sensors including the LIDAR.. but it still cannot seem to lock onto the room. Room is a 3m ceiling and approx 45m2. When the D7 comes out, it seems to just scan the room and throw an error.. I have since given up on the automatic feature, which is a shame. I simply start the vacuum manually with one press and it then spins round the room no problem (other than the other under chair wedge). What would massively improve this room lock issue is some better error messages or showing me what part of the room it cannot recognise..
Looks like they didn't really improve on their last gen bots. My D6 suffered the same navigation issues. It's really missing a lidar tower bump sensor and corner side brush like their Vorwerk siblings to actually get into corners. Personally I would miss the app features of the competitors, but they might be fine for others.
firmware 1.7.0-2933/app ver 1.5 ---The map works perfectly. The robot will not get stuck and will find its way back to the charging base. The only problem is the side brush. Only works on hard floors. It turns off on carpet, but does not turn on again when leaving it
My D6 died 2 times in 6 months and replaced by Neato after lots of arguments. The new one was repaired by Neato when it died again after 4-6 moths of use. It is almost 2 years I am using the 2nd one with issues. Neato refused to support any further.
Hi, did ya'll ever get around to reviewing the D9 or D10? I know they're outdated but my D80 was a tank and I'm just hoping its a D80 clone with more suction and mapping features.
Great review! I tried the D7 last year but the navigation does not hold a candle to Roborock, so I returned it. Speaking of, is a Roborock S7 review coming?
Hey, if you haven't done so before, could you make a video about the gaps in between tiles on the floor and cat litter? A friend of mine has an older robot vacuum and that thing just pushes the cat litter into the tile gaps and can't pick it up. I have tiles and cats, too, and I am considering buying a robot vacuum. But if it's a common thing of them all, that they only push the cat litter into the tile gaps - then I don't need to buy one. I would love such a video
Can you please review and compare the Shark WandVac. Its supposed to be the most powerful cordless for its weight. I'm considering that one or the shark rocket pro pet cordless for my new hard floors.
If you haven’t heard, the company that bought Neato 5 years ago (Vorwerk) is saying they weren’t reaching the "self-defined economic goals". It’s sad to see them go. P.S. they will keep the servers online for at least 5 years. If you want to know more, search up “is neato robotics going out of business?”.
I was excited for the new Neato range. Having both the D3 and D5 I’m a neato fan but I am not seeing much innovation. Yes there is a new app but it really does appear that it’s a D7 with a newly designed lid. I feel saddened and I will probably opt for the D7 and save some cash.
The D8 does get stupidly stuck in the weirdest of places and one would think as a smarter robot it would have a command or programming to recognize those trouble areas and avoid getting stuck. But once I identified those trouble areas I was able to add No-Go zones to keep it out of those areas. But often even though the base is within 10 feet of my Wifi router, it would often loose it's position and ask I to pick it up and bring it to the station, or it would spin around while exclaiming, "I need to find my bearings", but usually after that it's 50/50 if it can go back to the base. The times it can, great, but the times it doesn't, then its the go pickup and baby remedy. But once back at base it seems to reset its lostness and can start fresh like it never got lost. The odd times it would simply skip areas I zoned as clean zones and would have to manually select those areas and send it out again. What I find amusing is the sample pic of the APP screen all videos tend to show is a right side up or aligned with X and Y mapping. But ever since I got mine, the map aligns with true north. But the street i live off, is on a slight angle from true north, so even the map it creates is on an angle, but the no-go zones follow an X and Y axis... I wish I could get their previous line drawn no-go zones instead of standard sizing boxes which are locked to the X/Y axis even though the map is not. The solution according to Neato if it misses areas on the map is to clean the sensors from the underside of the robot. That fixes that problem until they get dirty again, which is weekly or basically after each cleaning.
I still can’t believe Neato didn’t release a model with a self emptying base. I love my D7 but it does have those navigation issues where it gets stuck or it will randomly decide to ram into the dryer or the couch over and over for no reason then finally decide to move on. I recommended the D7 to my aunt before mine started having issues and have had to fix hers for her 2 or 3 times now because it was non functional. It makes me look bad that I recommended it to her whenever it decides to stop working. We both love them when they do what they’re supposed to do. I’m just disappointed that they haven’t fixed any issues with the new versions. I’ll probably end up getting a different brand whenever it needs replacing
This sounds like it's having the exact same issues as the D7. The babysitting on the first run is a huge issue for me on the D7. Now we've moved some furniture, and I need to remap my house, but I am dreading the process. Did they fix their issue with Mesh Wifi?
You only need to remap the house if you moved the base and the furniture around it. I changed almost all the furniture in the living room ( the base is in the kitchen) and my D7 did not care at all, since it still knew how to get to the living room and just took it from there.
Thanks for the review. Hmm, I have the D4, which is doing okay, but there are limitations to what it can do. It seems however these limitations are still present in the D8. What are your thoughts?
Soo D3 and D10 are more or less the same robot minus some battery difference and a bit of suction power. That's a shame, I have a D3 and it's a nice robot, but why would I ever upgrade to a D8,9,10?
I thought in 2021, a self empty base is a thing. Why would you spend $700 on this Neato when you can get a Shark IQ with self empty base for under $400? My shark IQ is the best Robot so far and I've gone through over 10 robots including a Neato over the years.
I used to be a big fan of Neato, I’ve owned 3 and currently Own 2 the D5 and D7. At first they were at the leading edge of features, mainly the no-go zones. Ever since then they have fallen behind big time, and with the new line of robots they haven’t really brought anything notable to the table. On top of that I have had 0 software updates for each robot in the last 3 ish years, along with a repeatable issue where I can’t edit no-go lines on a map on iPhones. I have reached out to support so many times with this issue and each and every time it’s the same, factory reset your robot create a new map and the problem returns. No help after that unfortunately. The robots are however are very reliable. I will definitely not be shopping with Neato again and most likely will go with Roborock.
Neato app had multi-level support for quite a while now. In fact, that was the primary reason why I bought one back in the day. Did they actually REMOVE it in the new app?
I modified my neato D5 by cutting some of the white plastic strip under the brush roll as the side brush kept catching. Looks as though nothing has changed. 😒
I own a D7. What happened was the original owners sold the company off and the new owners never fixed anything after an update broke the software. Then they proceeded to take an eternity to release this new line which is garbage. So many customers complaining about problems, and they really didn't care. I'm pretty sure they honestly don't care about these products at all and the company is effectively dead.
I've been a pretty big neato fan for a while but I think they dropped the ball on these D8/9/10 models. They are expensive, have no new innovative features like they used to have, the design/motor/lidar is basically unchanged.. no improvements to noise, only slight to suction, etc - no vision, no mopping, no brush improvements.. there is like nothing here for this pricepoint. They sell it by saying "it pairs faster with bluetooth" but I should have to do that one time.. it's not really improving anything. And if the 9/10 only differences are the filtration then the value is even worse. The "stuck" segment of the video pains me because Neato's didn't use to do this. I have both a D5/D4 for a few years now and neither one had a problem getting unstuck until 6 or so months ago, pretty sure it was after a firmware update. Now I regularly see both of them get stuck in my kitchen chairs and dumbly do the same thing for several minutes until they give up and report it. I do feel like the D shape is probably an advantage - I would think in the embedded test if you embedded sand in the corners and compared it to circular bots the neato would come out ahead. But the rest of the bot is just lacking at this point. Also it's pretty annoying that Neato created an entirely new app for the D8/9/10 and basically abandoned the earlier models. Looking forward to the Roborock S7 review because I think that's going to be my next vacuum.
How do you like it? We have 2700 sq ft carpet, tile and vinyl. One Persian cat and 1 girl. Concerned about pet hair and ability to clean carpets. Any issues with emptying the dirt bin or hair breaking or getting stuck on rollers etc? How is the maintenance?
Had the D7, failed just outside of warranty period, a very expensive mistake to have purchased, never again will I buy a Neato. Roborock is the way to go.
Regarding his dumbness when it finds itself in weird positions: my D7 is absolutely the same; once I counted over 30 attempts to get over a chair leg making the same “evasive manoeuvre” over and over ….pretty worrying as I thought it got possessed like an object in “The Conjuring” movie
For me if the Roomba S9 had Lidar it would be the perfect robot vacuum. Problem is with lidar is there are some many components that could fail, I’m just waiting for the lidar belts to give up on my neato’s

I was lucky enough to get this vac at clearance deal.. $77 brand new 😅
4:49 does the robot charge all the way to 100% or it knows to just charge enough to get the last part of the job done?
just how much it needs plus a buffer
Excellent review as always. My biggest complaint about robots without an external bin to empty itself after each run is that the bin gets full too quickly especially if you have a dog. My neato D4 ‘s bin fills quickly up after doing the kitchen, lounge and small dining area so I hope that Neato releases a robot one day with an external bin system with a Lidar and AI camera..
Can you review the 360 S5, S7 & S9 and the Bissell spinwave please!
S7 review comes out today at 4PM EST!
Owned three Neatos but these days i changed to Roboroc when Neato for some reason gave up in developing their vacuum cleaners.
are you at all going to do a review of the Bissell Spinwave Robot?
What about the smoke test for the hepa filter?
Would love to see if your battalion of robot vacuums could handle different types of carpet edges: shag, ruggable, etc... Love the channel
Can you do a review of the LG Cordzero Thinq Robotic Vacuum?
I don't expect them to fix their navigation issues ever. This has been around since 2019 when I got the D6 and is why I returned it and got another brand. Their app is also inferior to alternatives.
When are you gonna do the D10?
Neato is dead to me
Why not a review of the “Vorwerk vr300”?
Very interesting machine. I bought my d7 after watching your great review of it a few years ago. I liked it but we always forgot to empty it so it would leave streaks of dirt on the floor. The brushroll also tangles really bad for me. So we replaced it with the shark IQ robot a little over a year ago and we have liked it. It’s not a perfect robot. It does have some issues. But we have liked it for it’s value and auto empty features. We do want to upgrade in the future. But I haven’t seen something super worth it yet.
Can we get an updated review as well as a review for the D9 and D10 now that they’re available?
I'd love to see you do a full review of the Hoover UH30600 or UH30301, they're excellent budget bagged upright vacuums under $200.
Can you review the narwal self cleaning robot
Shark continue to butt head with Dyson cloning a more affordable version of Dyson stuff.
I still have my D3 and once I got to know my little buddy, he has been faithful ever sent twice a week.
Is this at least as good as the Nestor D7 which you loved?
I keep hearing radio ads for the Aerius (Electrolux?) air purifiers and their “MASA” technology. You should review one
love your channel. is there a vac that has lidar but not a camera?
I love this thing. Makes maps good pickup does what it should. I seriously don't know why ppl hate these ....even my D85. Gramps still doin good
I've been running a D7 for a few years now.
Hi mate, can u suggest an all purpose vacuum for both home cleaning, car cleaning and wet carpet cleaning. Please thanks
Tengo una Neato modelo 9050262 la tengo fuera de servicio al o poderla programar.En Bahia Blanca habra algun service?
How's it performing after three years & subsequent updates?
Love the reviews! Will you be reviewing the Narwal? I'm really curious to see how good it is and you are my go to!
5:21 whats that song?
Shock O Banana by Randy Sharp
@@VacuumWars thanks!
firmware 1.7.0-2933/app ver 1.5 ---The map works perfectly. The robot will not get stuck and will find its way back to the charging base. The only problem is the side brush. Only works on hard floors. It turns off on carpet, but does not turn on again when leaving it
Which model?
@@TheTurbomopar D8
8 months later, have the software glitches been worked out. I have one of these coming from Amazon today.
Does it actually still have any competitive advantage relative to its competitor's flagship models?
Thanks
My D6 died 2 times in 6 months and replaced by Neato after lots of arguments. The new one was repaired by Neato when it died again after 4-6 moths of use. It is almost 2 years I am using the 2nd one with issues. Neato refused to support any further.
Hi, did ya'll ever get around to reviewing the D9 or D10? I know they're outdated but my D80 was a tank and I'm just hoping its a D80 clone with more suction and mapping features.
Can you please review the robo Rock s7
I'm hoping to have that done for this Friday!
Great review! I tried the D7 last year but the navigation does not hold a candle to Roborock, so I returned it. Speaking of, is a Roborock S7 review coming?
hopefully this Friday!
@Vacuum Wars I didn't find your review on Neato D9. I just bought it for 199€ (around 210 $). Did I srike a good bargain?
Can you please review and compare the Shark WandVac. Its supposed to be the most powerful cordless for its weight. I'm considering that one or the shark rocket pro pet cordless for my new hard floors.
I need to get to that one!
What’s the quiets robo to vacuum?
I was excited for the new Neato range. Having both the D3 and D5 I’m a neato fan but I am not seeing much innovation. Yes there is a new app but it really does appear that it’s a D7 with a newly designed lid.
I feel saddened and I will probably opt for the D7 and save some cash.
Yes, really sad indeed, my D7 side brush motor has stopped working, so looking at other brands now which have so many more features.
@@Lill-Q the side brush is weak on the Neatos but the D shape design is the best.
Sadly I can’t afford a roomba S9
When do you think Neato will come out with the D9 and 10?
I really don't know either!
Does it worka with charging station from D5, D7?
we had it for a week and it is yet to complete its first run. it keeps getting stuck and canceling the run.
Is there a review of the honiture Q6 coming. I would love to see one from your testing stand point.
Which vacuum has the highest performance on deep clean in carpets?
Will you review the new Dreame Bot L10 Pro with 3D lasers system?
This sounds like it's having the exact same issues as the D7. The babysitting on the first run is a huge issue for me on the D7. Now we've moved some furniture, and I need to remap my house, but I am dreading the process. Did they fix their issue with Mesh Wifi?
You only need to remap the house if you moved the base and the furniture around it. I changed almost all the furniture in the living room ( the base is in the kitchen) and my D7 did not care at all, since it still knew how to get to the living room and just took it from there.
When will you review the D10?
Please review the xiaomi 1T there are basically no reviews anywhere in english
Thanks for the review. Hmm, I have the D4, which is doing okay, but there are limitations to what it can do. It seems however these limitations are still present in the D8. What are your thoughts?
When will you do the Roborock s7
I missed the first batch but got an order in last week.
Soo D3 and D10 are more or less the same robot minus some battery difference and a bit of suction power. That's a shame, I have a D3 and it's a nice robot, but why would I ever upgrade to a D8,9,10?
You should try the makita robot vacuum, I have only heard good about it but I dont know
Do you own every robot vacuum available? If so, how much did it all cost
I thought in 2021, a self empty base is a thing. Why would you spend $700 on this Neato when you can get a Shark IQ with self empty base for under $400? My shark IQ is the best Robot so far and I've gone through over 10 robots including a Neato over the years.
Why haven’t u test the s7 roborock ?
It went out of stock almost immediately. I hope to get to it soon.
@@VacuumWars waiting for S7 review! Hope you'll get it soon 👍
Waiting for that review as well.
I used to be a big fan of Neato, I’ve owned 3 and currently
Own 2 the D5 and D7.
I wonder why you didnt include the S9 in this comparison.
Neato app had multi-level support for quite a while now. In fact, that was the primary reason why I bought one back in the day. Did they actually REMOVE it in the new app?
Same garbage side brush.. If it were closer to the front corner, it could really get into corners good.
I modified my neato D5 by cutting some of the white plastic strip under the brush roll as the side brush kept catching. Looks as though nothing has changed. 😒
Can you please review the roidmi eve plus?
Ugh.
Friday! I hope!
@@VacuumWars I been seeing Roomba but now I like neato
Had the D7, failed just outside of warranty period, a very expensive mistake to have purchased, never again will I buy a Neato. Roborock is the way to go.
Regarding his dumbness when it finds itself in weird positions: my D7 is absolutely the same; once I counted over 30 attempts to get over a chair leg making the same “evasive manoeuvre” over and over ….pretty worrying as I thought it got possessed like an object in “The Conjuring” movie
Great review but at that price I really would like to see a automatic dust bin.
I have a question what robot vacuums do you use
Deebot T8 AIVI
@@Diego-1 I mean all of them plus he may be using the deebot n8 pro+
This robot is totally OVERPRICED ...but still better than roomba s9 that doesen't have lidar...
For me if the Roomba S9 had Lidar it would be the perfect robot vacuum.
Problem is with lidar is there are some many components that could fail, I’m just waiting for the lidar belts to give up on my neato’s
