  • Paddy Ashdown was born in New Delhi in 1941. At 4 years old, his family returned to Britain, and between 1959 and 1972 he served in the Royal Marines and saw active service as a Commando Officer in Borneo and the Persian Gulf. In 1972, Paddy joined the Foreign Office and was posted to the British Mission to the United Nations in Geneva. After leaving the Foreign Office, Paddy worked in industry in South-West England and worked as a Youth Worker with the Dorset County Council Youth Service. He was elected to Parliament in the 1983 General Election and was elected Leader of the Liberal Democrats in July 1988. Paddy stood down as the leader of the Liberal Democrats in 1999 and retired from the Commons in 2001. He was made a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2000 and a Life Peer in 2001. Lord Ashdown was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George in 2006 for his work in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He now sits in the House of Lords as a Liberal Democrat peer. He is the author of many books, including two acclaimed volumes of diaries. His most recent book is A Brilliant Little Operation, about World War II’s Cockleshell Heroes.

As a former Royal Marine, I knew this story. Tears welled up as I listened to Paddy Ashdown's presentation.

1942: when a working class milkman of 19 could write more eloquently than your average university graduate of today.

Funny that I thought the same both letters home were well crafted and eloquent, intelligent lads trapped in the working class quagmire.

Can you imagine, having your CO say, if you want to write that last letter home, now's the time, Lads.

It was 12 young marines that went out from Britain for the attack in France, it’s just unfortunate that one of the six crews ripped their boat lifting it out of the submarine and were stopped from going. The other five boats were able to disembark from the Sub and of those only two boats managed to get there.

I met Lord Ashdown weekly as a young Captain in Sarajevo in 2002. I disagreed with him politically but he was one of those rare people that ‘has something about them’. Bright as a button yet modest. And yet with soooo much experience behind him. Great man. Great adventure.

He was a brilliant latent historian Paddy taken far too soon. Do read 'A Brilliant Little Operation' and 'Game of Spies', both gripping publications. But there is a beautiful line at the end of his Operation Frankton book I think is worth the repeating here, "In an age of easy living when we are rarely faced with the need to choose between ourselves and something greater, they should be an inspiration to us all".

It just proves one or two good men can do more damage than a division. I believe the ships were easily refloated and repaired seems such a waste of good men.

The only comment that I would suggest in your preamble was either forgotten or ignored in this Heroic story, was that if the Battle of Britain had NOT been resisted by the R.A.F. the U.K. would have been likely speaking German and under German control .... and this raid would never have taken place Mr Ashdown.
May I suggest whilst you criticise Politicians you MUST include your self!.
