My brother and grandfather left me a 73 fj40. I'm far from mechanically inclined. Been slowly trying to rebuild it. When I get discouraged or stuck with frustration I watch this video to give me a little bit of motivation. I'll drive her some day... take her up the mountain to the pond we all used to fish at...
I did the same to an ‘80 fj40 as a “hobby in the garage “ I called it. Painted it the Same color. No wonder it took me so long. Reminds me just how much work it was. You did a great job 👍
I couldn't stop watching this. It is wonderful to watch people who are good at understanding what needs to be done. I am not one of those people when it comes to cars. Thanks for the effort, i appreciated it.
Wow! I worked for Toyota in the parts and service departments in 1970-1972. Always wanted a Land Cruiser like the ones coming in new. Young family so I couldn’t do it. Had plenty of Jeeps including military ones since. This one makes my heart glad!! Thanks 😊
That was amazing. You are one talented guy. My dad, brother, and I did that to a 68 Land Cruiser. It had a 350 Chevy in it. We put a automatic transmission and power steering in it. We took it down to the axles, cleaned, painted, and restored a few things. Nothing like what you had to do. My Land Cruiser was nine years old when we did it. This video brought back good memories with my dad and brother. I’m 68 now, wish I hadn’t sold the Land Cruiser. Bad decision on my part. Again, amazing job, and thanks for sharing your journey with this Land Cruiser. 👍
Thank you for showing us the total rebuild of your '74 FJ40. Your Restoration has brought this back to NEW. 1400 hrs of hard work, timelapse and editing, well deserved. I worked in the Toyota Factory in Durban, South Africa ( now Retired) and fondly remember being in the Assembly Hall where the FJ40 was on my Production Line. My Brother in Law had the LHD Diesel, ''SMOKY''. (We drive RHD's in South Africa).
I really enjoyed watching this restoration video. I love Toyota and seeing someone keep these classics in fantastic shape and useable is a testament to the value of these iconic vehicles. Absolutely a great job!
I sure miss mine. It was a 73 that was just like this one. It was still like new back then, and I traded it in on a new 86 Hilux pickup, which I drove for the next twenty years. The wife and I called it Elsie(LC). You did a beautiful job, and I am jealous.
And I get all proud of myself after I change the oil and brakes on my truck. Crazy mad, MIND boggling set of skills on display here! AMAZING finished product. Very, very envious!
You Heal, you travel on time, You teach us magic, patience, History, Design...No words exist to describe the beauty of this process and product... Blessed you are Masters of Restauration. How rich would I feel to drive that car , smell the new interior and admire that piece of art...Thanks for sharing!!!
You did an excellent job! Swapping the knuckles for disks good call..If you want p steering there's two choices,83 pu box bolts to original LC box perch add pu pump and fluid tank with lines almost bolt in no frame mods !!!
Knew the FJ43 from owning qty 2 in Saudi Arabia so quite similar to the FJ40. Beautiful job restoring this. They are amazing tools for exploring trails and are as tough as a stock vehicle can be. I never experienced a breakdown and traveled over 4 years with friends that had other early Toyota Land Cruisers (FJ40s, FJ43s and FJ45s). Currently running a Tacoma lifted with a straight axle in front. Again, Toyota quality helps you stay out of trouble. Tough, dependable vehicles.
Amazing job guys !! You send me back in time when i made some restorations too. What an exhausting task, but when you finish , you seat on a chair with a bourbon and music and just your eyes travel at all the details. That feeling is priceless. God bless you all.
Inexplicable feelings Because every step is very attentive and responsible Glad to see works resurrecting forgotten things back to life Thank you for allowing me to see this. Encouraged the team
Supongo que una tarea tan gigantesca solo es posible cuando unos genios de la mecánica sienten el mismo amor por un coche. Gracias por dar una nueva vida un coche tan bello y mítico. Felicidades!!!
Beautiful! I had a pale blue '73 I bought new, and I swear that was the most honestly built vehicle I ever owned. You treated your '74 with respect and did a beautiful job. (Mine had the older style door handles, the little French doors at the rear with a lift gate above, a separate factory heater in the rear, and IIRC less padding on the dash.) 😉
What a great frame-off restoration time laps presentation! My first FJ 40 was a new 1972 white I 'lost' that in a trade and later purchased a new 1976 yellow which I traded in as well. Then I bought a new 2007 FJ Cruiser silver which I still have and intend driving until I can't. These machines were made to do one thing only and do it extremely well, climb! That they do!
And he lives to fight another 45 years!! nice job with the restoration mate! I'm more of a Rover person when it comes to off-roading but in the Toyota side of the planet, these FJ40's are my absolute favorite!
more like rammed and scrapped in the first year! my friend restaured an old pickup truck like this, it took him 2years and a woman rammed him while putting make-up on while watching herself in the center mirroir. my friend just had the bare minimum insurance and only got 4000$ for the car.
Im at 34:17 and I havn`t been able to turn away for more than 2 or 3 seconds since your timelapse awesome video began. We had a 72 Fj the same color back around 76-81 and went down to Baja many many times with a TRW dive (party)club. That tank never once even hiccuped with any problems ever. It just ran, ran, ran till it was just time to retire. Your video brings back so many memories of great times. You did a great job on this video especially with the music. it sort of reminds me of Bolero by Maurice Ravel with the gradual"ramping up".
I am in here watching an FJ 40 restoration that "keeps it real" I just get nauseous about all the other guy's who post FJ 40 "restorations" who bastardize perfection with an LS swap! Thank you for NOT doing that!
Awesome! I had a ‘71 just like it (except 3 in the tree) drove it for 10 years in New England so it rusted badly. I’ve had Toyota trucks ever since but there is nothing like an FJ40!
Great job. I used to work with BJ40s in the Sahara desert back in the 80s. They were 4cyl diesel pickups. Great and tough machines when your life may depend on them!
Jesus, a year of your life? YOU are one seriously dedicated individual. I owned one of these things waaaaay back when they were brand new. I NEVER had any idea of how many parts went into that thing, I thought at the time that it was the simplest and therefore would be the most reliable 4x4 around :) It was, but was soooo slow, and frankly beat me to death on the highways, much less off road. Reliable tho :) Otoh, I now have 5 of the old 90's aluminum bodied Range Rovers. 3 I maintain and drive, and tw0 for parts. Gotta tell you, they ride one hell of a lot better than my old FJ did, easily comparable to some of today's offerings, and yes, 2 of the ones I drive still have the variable height air suspension, and 1, the tall 'mtn' coil springs conversion. From 90k miles to 210k miles, I STILL haven't had to rebuild those engines (a Buick design btw) or Transmissions, AND, they *cruise* comfortably at around 90mph (designed for European motorways.) HUGELY more Luxurious than the Toy (Queen Elizabeth used to drive a Green one as her personal vehicle- she LOVED toolin around off road on her country estates:) A Chit load more maintenance though; LUBE< LUBE< LUBE!!! lol. I'm an old guy, its nice to see a young guy like you who appreciates these FJ's, from a time when Men were MEN, and drove SERIOUS 4x4's to prove it ;:) ENJOY THAT TOY!!!!
They should return to this body style once again, surely there will be many thousands people wanting to buy it. Truck had great personality, iconic symbol of exploration.
Felicitaciones por tan Excelente y Profesional trabajo , magnífica restauración. I been seeing a great restorations, but this one is rare, is what a call the restoration of the masters!!!Excelente job, practicaly you made the Toyota again!! incredible!!
Wow! I bet that you guys would not have too much of a problem changing a flat tire! Gorgeous restoration. Thanks also from restraining from obnoxious hard rock music.
Such an incredible build to see this from start to finish can’t imagine the hours that you spent doing this and from the looks of it a lot of it was done without help wow you have a lot of talent I have a 68 in the garage it’s mostly all tore apart down to the chassis I can only imagine the work that’s ahead of me. Thanks so much for the share this video!
Nicely done. I remember being a teen when these came out and we went to a dealer and sat in a new one, sadly I could not afford one but this rebuild is as nice and clean as the new one I remember. Bravo, job well done.
Was soll ich sagen, eine absolute Top Arbeit, besser wie aus der Farbrik , mit Sichrheit !! Danke das man so etwas mit dieser Leidenschaft , noch sieht. Dein Papa flippt doch total aus , oder ????

Very tidy resto, i'm Rover owner who also appreciates the FJ 40's. It will last for decades. Excellent work.
this is not restoration , its fabrication !
What a fantastic job

@@vforvendetta275 yeah, she didnt have any pain, but my friend had his head whiplash and he had to go to the doctor for 2years after.
@@Francois_Dupont your friend has a good temperament. I can't say she would have survived the accident if it were me
@@vforvendetta275 pretty sure it only hit him when he got the minimum from his insurance.

Technically, a resto-mod since the doors, top side panels and ambulance doors are all from later years. Still an excellent job. Strong work.
I didn't catch that! well spotted.
