Choose AGPCNP 😛😛😛...I'm a little biased 😁 I did my research a few years prior to applying to my NP program. I knew I wanted to work with the Geriatric population doing home visits but they did away with the GNP certification (I was very sad). Realized they just combined adult and Geri together into one certification. So that was my mission (accomplished 😉) in spite of folks suggesting FNP for the supposed marketability. Naaaah, I'm good, don't want deal with or learn about the pediatric population, thank ya very much! 😉
Yes, that GNP certification is no longer there and many don't realized about the ACNP certification either, I had someone ask me the other day and that's why I decided to make this video!
Thank you for explaining. As others say, it is overwhelming. I am finishing my B.S.N. now and will hopefully start NP school in 2022. Trying to look into the future is difficult so starting with baby steps and breaking it down really helps. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your videos, insight and wisdom. As an MN-NP student, I follow many NP blogs, videos and groups. I have heard of acute care NPs going back for FNP or pediatric and adult NPs going back for the FNP. It seemed that specializing can be limiting. Some also mentioned that FNPs are being hired into hospitals anyway for roles like hospitalists or emergency departments. I am an ICU nurse, and I also have my certification, which helps market my acute care experience. I chose the PHC (Canadian FNP equivalence) for the marketability reason that many mention and to keep my options open. Thanks again for your videos! 💗 Unfortunately, there's not much representation here, so I love your content! So encouraging, motivating and uplifting.
Already knew I didn't want to deal with the peds population but this is the affirmation I needed to wipe off any lingering doubts. Informative and educative. Thanks.
Great Video .. graduated 5/20 AGPCNP ..definitely knew i didn't want to treat peds or women's health... I currently work in primary care as a provider... which is cool and interesting for now .. not sure where I'll end up but I like knowing I can work anywhere treating adolescents to old age ....
Believe me ,what ever you do never give up finally I've become an FNP on my 3rd attempt , I can’t believe I almost gave up after not making it for the 2nd time ,fortunately for me I was recommended to a tutor by my friends
I am a AGPCNP you have some valuable tips, just to piggyback to what you are saying, specialize in the area you want to work in not the most popular. or what others say. I choose (AGPCNP) because I have absolutely NO desire to work with kids. Finding a job is also dependent on who will hire you. My co-worker who did Acute Care would like to work in the outpatient setting but is unable to find a job, due to her training ( she is more knowledgeable that some MD. I am Impressed by her knowledge level. She is now going back to school for FNP,. I work in the hospital and I did not do Acute, our job function is the same. A NP can work in any specialty ( cardio, nephrology, urology, podiatry) just depends on who will hire you. I think a solid nursing foundation prepares the NP for any specialty.
So as an AGPCNP you can also work in the hospital. I just made the decision to become a AGPCNP because I love the LTC setting but I would love the option to work in acute settings with geri.
I am currently in an FNP program as people have also told me they are more marketable. I don’t want to work with kids at all ever. I reached out to my advisor who said I am able to change my concentration, so I think I’m going to change to the AGNP. Thank you so much for your video.
I stumbled upon your channel and immediately hit like, subscribe and the notification bell. I'm in my second last term of MN-NP PHC (Canadian versions of FNP). I have a 55% paper that I should be finishing, but I can't stop watching! So happy to see a Jamaican female NP! #representationmatters 🇯🇲 👩🏾⚕️
Laurie I want to tell you how much I appreciate your videos. I am doing a career change from MHA admin to Nursing - NP. You go into such depth with your explanations. Thank you!
Hi ! Thank you so much for this video ! Can you please explain why would you have chosen to do Acute Care Adult Geri NP over FNP, like what are you reasons ?
Lordie-- wish I had this video back in 2017. Have my FNP. Decided this because I have experienced in peds & adults. I believe because of the " marketability " that was a good deal. Currently, 4months in and realize I should of went with WHNP / CNM. Nonetheless, I am seeing my role as FNP in FQHC as added bonus when I transition into WHNP/CNM role.
I've been accepted into both FNP and AGACNP programs for this Fall I'm so confused...I don't know which to pick ultimately I think I'll have some regrets. I most likely will need to get an additional certification that way I can be dual certified...
Your video was amazing and very informative, but I am still stuck between the FNP and the ACNP. Which one would I eventually need to open my own practice?
Right now, I think I am leaning toward AGACNP to work in acute care setting (ICU, ED, Urgent Care) and maybe do rounds on nursing home patients. I also want to keep my options open for executive administration in addition to maintaining a clinical workload presence.
I am happy you know exactly what you want to do especially in the long run, keeping your options open for long term goal is always a great strategy! best of luck
I'm a first-year AGACNP student and was thinking of switching to FNP because people say it is more “marketable” and working in an outpatient setting is less stressful. I have always worked in a hospital as a RN. I don't even know how it is to work in an outpatient setting... I don't know whether I should switch or not. I don't like seeing peds...
I am FNP and when I went for FNP I was told the same thing, honestly for me out patient setting is not for me. I had all my years of nursing working in the hospital. If you have never worked out patient please try and shadow different out pt role that is one thing I should have done. I don't see Peds pt, I prefer not to. All the best to you.
I absolutely love your channel and look forward to your videos! I am currently applying to FNP programs and the information you have provided on your channel has been very inspirational and informative!
1st....love your videos & content! As I am completing prerequisites for nursing! I am looking forward to advancing my education & career...this is very beneficial in choosing the path in which I should take! TYFS ❤️
So I am considering getting certified in wound care while I await acceptance to a DNP program. I already have my Masters. While researching I have gotten twisted all around I think. Prices for these program are all over the place. Some "courses" cost arounf 600 dollars, while som e"program" through unicersities range from 1500 to 2500 dollars and run a full semester like a college semester. What is the difference between these certificate and board certification. I guess I would like a more thorough explaination of your certification. Do you have a certificate or are you board certified? What is the difference? which is better? how does this weigh in on pay? does it affect billing and documentation? And do you have any credible program recommendations (next video recommendation)
Hello Lisa! I just uploaded a video about the different certifications, for me my job did require me to have one over the other when I did my research and spoke with my boss he wanted any course and any certification, you are right they are very expensive. I do not believe it affect billing. I do not do my own billing but I have never heard them say it affects it! hopes this help. Good luck on DNP
Is it true that the nursing field is over saturated with NPs? I heard that there are many nurses walking around with a NP certification but cannot find an NP job. Can you do a video about if this is myth or fact.
Thanks for this video. Curious. You did FNP but also then mentioned that if you could go back, you would much rather have obtained your AGACNP. Why is that?
@@fromcnatonp FNPs do work on the hospital. It’s the Acute care NPs who are not able to work in the outpatient setting. I can see the difference, caring for patients with chronic illnesses is different than caring for acute problems. The best example I can give is working in ICU versus med surg.
I have always been in geriatric for my whole career and that is what I will be doing but my question is do I need to be certified to be a nurse practitioner in a skilled nursing facility or is that something extra you can get? Also, I am in the beginning phase of choosing a school any ideas of things I should look at when choosing? I know there are many great schools but I am not willing to pay an extra $20 thousand dollars for the name recognition of one school over another when the programs are the same quality wise.
Thanks for watching. Honestly the only thing I look at in a school is if the school is accredited make sure they are bc you will not be about to do nothing with a degree from a school not is not accredited and some of them loose accreditation for multiple different reasons. Name recognition I don't look at either. You do not need another certification to work in skill facility, just getting your NP in either AGPCNP or FNP skilled nursing will hire you. Good luck you
Well there is no more just "Gero" so getting the Adult-Gero NP means you can work with anyone late teenaged - old age. As far as Psych NP I thought about that too but I just don't want the danger. I'm small 5'1" woman and in my 40s already, I don't need to be defending myself on the daily! (Maybe that sounds paranoid but the risk is there!)

AGPCNP! Graduate June 2021🎉. Don’t Like kids, no inpatient, eventually want my own practice in Dermatology! Great video👍🏾
That’s awesome 👏🏾!! Congratulations and Dermatology is in my wish list as well!!
What would you do with that? Like I have visions of owning a medspa 😍😍😍
Hi I am just starting, what would you recommend to help with the studying? ADv Research?
Dermatology with a Adult Gero degree? I’m confused
The kids part😊

Are you still in primary care? How has the AGPCNP helped you compared to your FNP peers who might field more patients?
That's so much for sharing your thoughts. I'm an AGACNP. I want to get my post certification in Family bc I want more options.
Thanks for narrowing it down for me. Women’s Health all the way. 👍🏾
There’s so many options, it’s overwhelming and confusing! Great video explaining!
It is and so over whelming when trying to decide what route to take. Thanks for watching
Along with choosing a program, which many don’t share here. Maybe I’ll do a video comparing some of the post masters np programs out there
I should say share here on You Tube in general, not on this channel

I love this channel and your twist out looks amazing😍! Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much!! Will do!
Thank you! Helped a lot as I started to be confused about my future route now as an RN
You are welcome! Best of luck
AGNP is my choice I’m not into pediatrics, but I will be OK, but working with adolescence I want to focus on teen pregnancies and young women
Just found your channel, love it!
Yay! Thank you!
Thank you!!! I have been debating between FNP and AGPNP but this video has given me so much clarity
Thanks so much for watching!! And I am glad this video was helpful in your decision
Which did you choose, Gloria? I chose AGPNP. I've heard many now say that whole "FNP is more marketable" idea is wrong.

thank you!
Can you touch on the job market for each speciality.
I will do that! Thanks for watching
I did AGPC and definitely am interested in a more acute route
I should have done the same!
Thank you!!!!! Very 😊helpful
I’m already a cardiac nurse and I want to be a cardiology NP. I want to treat acute illnesses but I don’t want to work 12 hours 😭😭😭😭

So very helpful and so glad you explained them all so many great tips 👍🏾👏🏾🤗
Glad it was helpful!

Love your videos! This helped me a lot!
I'm applying for some direct entry MSN programs for fnp. I hope to eventually became crna.
