In fact this was a perfectly planned cutting. The heavy leaves from the top have been removed, so there is no risk of the stump falling onto the road from its weight. More importantly, there is a cable tied to the top of the tree, which is being pulled by 2-3 people behind the man, and they are pulling at the stump in exactly the direction he wants the stump to fall. This video is probably from south India, and I've seen coconut trees being cut like this a lot of times.
That's the thing about videos is the angles are completely deceptive especially with people using different type of filters and wide camera lenses. The tree would not have landed in the power lined or in the street It was just a depth perception trick.

lumberjack: the top of the tree arched back towards him after the curve, putting all of the weight actually behind him rather than in front like you would assume. he noticed this and rather than do an advanced cut he realized due to the curve and weight placement he could do an angled wedge cut followed by a standard back cut. notice that the wedge has two angled cuts rather than one flat and one angled, this is so that the tree acts as more of a hinge rather than a braking point. he also places his back cut above the center line of his wedge, meaning the trees weak points aren’t lined up with eachother, further preventing too fast of a fall or too uncontrolled of a snap. while some of you may point out the lack of safety which i agree with, i recognize a saw man when i see one, and that was a crisp cut! edit in regards to rope comments: while a rope will HELP with directing the fall of a tree, they aren’t as effective as you think, especially when a tree is that tall and that heavy. also if you take into account the lean, there’s too much weight in unstable/uncentered places for it to not spin and twist if it were being pulled that hard. you could argue that if it was attached to a wench it would work, but the problem with that is that you need cable on an electric or even most hand wenches. seeing as that’s a rope, and it’s being tugged and not constantly over tensioned, it’s most likely being pulled by a guy or two. that or it’s just tensioned and tied to another tree to prevent it from falling on the power line. a lot of the time people attach ropes to add steady tension to the tree which helps with the fall in heavy leans, but mostly only in the sense of lightly directing it and not completely redirecting it in the other direction. and while i appreciate the 60 comments pointing out the rope and how the rope is the simple easy answer, if ropes were THAT useful in tree felling, arborists wouldn’t exist and i’d be a rich man. i’d like to think i know what i’m talking about considering it’s my trade and i do it every day, thank you

For that notch to work by itself with just gravity the center of mass of the top of the tree has to be on the side of the lever point (the bit of wood that is left) you want it to fall towards, which it does not appear to be.

Arborist here. What he did is incredibly dangerous. You're never supposed to notch anything towards yourself, he isn't on spurs or in a saddle, doesn't have a hard hat, no chainsaw pants. Pretty much, osha would have a heart attack watching this. He made a really deep face cut as well, which could have caused it to hinge prematurely depending on the wood, pinning him between the now cut log and the spar, and if you can help it, always use a rigging line if you can. I'm glad it seems he made it out safe but I definitely wouldn't make it a habit to do it this way.
I get the whole ppe, its important.. if you don't know what your doing, this guy clearly does. The best safety is yourself. Chainsaw pants will only help against a quick nick..

IF you notice in the top right corner there's a rope. The tree was pulled in that direction as he cut it. Also why he looked back, because there were people pulling the rope.
If you don't understand, that tree bends back. It would never fall that way if the weight was on the opposite side. The tree bends back and the top and hangs over him, so the weight is neutralized and you can cut freely using a simple wedge. However, this guy almost gutted himself when he pulled the saw back.
Watch the video again and look at the upper right corner of the frame. There's a line on the tree. Which is fine, that's perfectly acceptable when cutting a tree in an urban environment, but this isn't some big brain physics genius at work.

Arborist here. What he did is incredibly dangerous. You're never supposed to notch anything towards yourself, he isn't on spurs or in a saddle, doesn't have a hard hat, no chainsaw pants. Pretty much, osha would have a heart attack watching this. He made a really deep face cut as well, which could have caused it to hinge prematurely depending on the wood, pinning him between the now cut log and the spar, and if you can help it, always use a rigging line if you can. I'm glad it seems he made it out safe but I definitely wouldn't make it a habit to do it this way.
I get the whole ppe, its important.. if you don't know what your doing, this guy clearly does. The best safety is yourself. Chainsaw pants will only help against a quick nick..

As a person who had lived in rural places like up a mountain in the middle of the Canadian Rockies and a remote island in a cabin in the woods, heated my house with wood I've cut most of my life, this just looks like another day. If you don't understand, that tree bends back. It would never fall that way if the weight was on the opposite side.
The tree bends back and the top and hangs over him, so the weight is neutralized and you can cut freely using a simple wedge. However, this guy almost gutted himself when he pulled the saw back.
Watch the video again and look at the upper right corner of the frame. There's a line on the tree. Which is fine, that's perfectly acceptable when cutting a tree in an urban environment, but this isn't some big brain physics genius at work.
