    I am expecting #5 and I would still pack a full bag for baby. You can leave it in the car if you want, but have one just in case. I went from a routine stress test to an emergency induction with #3. I was full term and our son had the cord around his neck. He had a 7 day NICU stay. Because he was full term and not the typical premie the NICU didn't really have much of anything for him to wear. The unexpected can happen either at the hospital or the drive home. You could get stuck in traffic or make an unplanned stop. It's ok to be minimal for you but make sure you have everything for the baby. I also think it depends on the nurses that are taking care of you on how much you are sent home with. Some nurses loaded us up with stuff and others did not.

      I was told by my sister inlaw not to bring any clothes for the baby aside from the going home outfit.. I am glad I brought extra clothes because the "clothes" they said the hospital provide is like a crop top on him and we ended up staying 2days. I do not recommend not bringing extra clothes for you, your baby and uour husband. It is always best to have on hand.

    I’m due May 20th with my first baby. I packed my bag at 30 weeks. However, after talking to my doctor recently about covid, I decided to really cut down on the number of things I was planning on bringing to reduce the chance of bringing germs home. My pillow, letter board for pictures, diaper bag with baby’s clothes/linens, and my boppie pillow are all staying home. We were also opted to pack canvas duffel bags instead of suite cases so everything can be put into the washing machine to be disinfected. Good luck with your baby! I’m having a little boy.☺️☺️☺️

Now 25 weeks with my third, really hope my third comes on time lol Only thing I bring differently because I’m bottle feeding is I do bring a bottle for otw home just in case. Things I learned from my first two definitely bring snacks esp for dad, chapstick and gum/mints (dry mouth is real)! And our hospital only supplies bars of soap like the motels 🤢. So now I know to bring my own. That after birth shower is heaven.

    You have the most realistic and helpful video I’ve seen for packing your hospital bag for baby and I. I’m 36 weeks and this is my first baby so not knowing what exactly to pack for baby and I (not wanting to take too much) had been so overwhelming! I’ve watched times of videos of “you’ll need this and that and yada yada” which is great but I’m looking for bare minimum being that we’re still dealing with Covid so it’ll just be my partner and I at the hospital and I don’t want to overwhelm ourselves with carrying so many bags while we have our little one to navigate through this maze of a hospital. So thank you so much, I’m convinced I too can pack for the three of us into one carryon luggage bag! Your video was also relatable being that you too were waiting to know baby’s gender. So thank you so much mamas, and congratulations to you and your little family on baby number three!!! I hope all is well and your recovery is going great! 💞💞💞

    Every hospital and place is different. My hospital in Boston gave me mostly everything but if you want specific brand ( they gave us Johnson baby soap, I know most people don’t like that) I would bring it. Also I have heard for people go in and they have NOTHING for them at the hospital. I think it depends on your personality. I am an over packer and I don’t mind having an extra bag with us for just in case stuff. Like a diaper bag should always be with you. Walking out of the hospital my son spit up, I needed wipes and a change of clothes and other things that were in my diaper bag. Also c section is always an option so extra can come in handy. You can go from staying a day or two or five if something happens.

    Second time mom here, I watched videos for the first one and ended up bringing nothing because I was so stressed out by all the stuff people said I needed.... luckily my husband was able to leave the hospital. This time my list is pretty close to yours. The only think I’m unsure about is for my husband. We have a tiny county hospital so I think they will let him come and go.

    I formula fed from the beginning...one tip for my FF moms is to bring some newborn nurser bottles of a few types of formula (ask your OB for samples ahead of time). My hospital only supplied one brand of formula and baby boy # 2 didn’t like that brand! I had to have hubby run out to the store. Haha he wasn’t thrilled.

    • @gfdereus8967
      @gfdereus8967 4 года назад

      We got lucky, they asked about who we wanted to feed and when I told them with formula they gave me a pil to stop milk production and then I could pick from three different formulas. They were little newborn bottles you could heat up and give when needed. They also had three diffrent tips for the new born bottles so if the baby didn't like a certain tip you could try another one

      @@gfdereus8967 did the hospital/doctors/nurses judge you for choosing to formula feed? just curious because I want to ff but the media has totally changed the outlook on choosing not to breastfeed and I'm afraid of getting told I am an awful mom for example

    • @gfdereus8967
      @gfdereus8967 3 года назад

      @@gagasfan1 first of all f anybody who tells you you're a bad mom for feeding your baby. Second I do live in Germany I know in my hospital they were really relaxed about it. No one gave me the idea they were against it no one told me to reconsider. I had a doula and I talked to her about my choice (she needed to know because it would determine if she would have to do more after visit as German women who have a doula have the right to 1 year of breast feeding advice so she will support you in your journey) I told her I wanted to bottle feed she said thats fine and adviced me on different formulas and their variations. That all said, my choice had to do with my mental health. A happy and relaxed mom is a happy and relaxed baby. If bottle feeding is doing that for you then more power to you. Also small tip formula (at least in Germany/Europe im sure it's the same for america) it's all made to the same standards. Basic formula is made to fit any babys needs. Lots of stuff they advertise to "add" to premium formula is bullshit as the baby cannot process it yet, certain things the baby can't even properly break down without milk bacteria from mothers milk. So just stick to the simple formula it has everything your little one needs by default. Don't get slapped in the face by Marketing and them pushing your guilt buttons. I'm sorry this is so long tho hahaha

    Love your videos, Abby! Can you make a video talking about fitness levels with all your 3 pregnancies? I remember you mentioning that you didn't exercise with the second pregnancy as much as you did with the third. Do you think it made a difference? Do you think it will make a difference during labor?

    Whether you need stuff for the baby depends on where you live/what hospital/public or private care. Here in Ireland they don’t generally provide baby items.

    Life hack for toiletries! Clean out some used mio bottles (those water flavor things) and twist then open. You can use them for shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotions. Smaller than filling up the 3 oz travel bottles, cheaper than buying trial sizes, and you get some yummy water flavors for a while before it's done.

    If no one can bring you things from home, you might want to take some of your nursing stuff. When my daughter was born, the hospital was out of lanolin and I was in so much pain by the time I got home! It doesn't take up much space but it is such a lifesaver!

    Not all hospitals throw the pillows away by the way! The hospital I worked at earlier this year used pillows that were plastic basically so you take the pillow case off and then sanitize the whole pillows plastic outside with a purple wipe before letting the chemical dry and then we had a pillow closet they stored well in. It’s too expensive for them to throw them away so they make them as sanitizable as possible to avoid that cost. But that’s also why they suck, the stuffing is never comfy and it’s thick plastic to lay on so they’re the worst from patient perspective.

    Really good video. Realistic stuff to take. I would leave some of the outfits, but that’s me personally. I was at the hospital for 4 days total and before having baby I couldn’t be bothered with any clothes or makeup or anything because I was so stressed about the labor, that was the first day. So I was wearing the hospital gown. After I had my son, I stayed for 3 more days before going home. They didn’t want me to wear clothes because it was easier for them to open the hospital gown and do things, especially if I was napping or sleeping and the needed to clean my csection. So wore their gown and socks, and underwear all the time I was there. I only had to use my going home outfit. For my son I packed a few outfits to change him and take pictures, but they also were a bit annoyed with that saying is better to leave him with the clothes they put on him because they take him to get wash and they dump the clothes in the laundry. I got so mad when they took one of my sleepers and didn’t bring it back... I think they did it on purpose to force me not to dress him up. Anyway, I’m having another boy in April and it will be in the same hospital. They have remodeled the maternity ward so I hope they also remodeled the staff. Lol.
    But I’m just taking one outfit for me and two for my baby. One to take pics as soon as he is brought in the room and one to go home. I will be taking blankets because baby gets cold at night with just the one blanket they wrap him with. But everything they will provide as you said. Thanks for the video.

    A good tip is to always check with your hospital what they offer postpartum, my hospital dosent offer dermaplast, tucks pads. They only offer mesh underwear and pads. No breast feeding supplies other than a medical grade pump you can borrow! ❤

    On my pregnancy app that I have you should see the new moms bags! 😆😆😆
    Oh bless them! They pack everything except the kitchen sink!
    Including speakers, blankets, breast pumps ECT! 😆🤷🏻‍♀️
    They don’t realize your only in the hospital for 24 hours with a natural birth!
    They also don’t realize breast milk doesn’t come in at first! It’s so funny!
    I’m not being mean just honest 💙

    • @msaijay1153

      My hospital has you stay for two days. Also they had me pump, even colostrum, because my daughter was in the NICU and they didn't want her burning too many calories while trying to figure out breast feeding. Because of that I could see that my milk came in about 24 hours after my daughter was born. But the hospital provided me with a pump to use.
      Anyway, not everyone's experience is the same.

    I’m planning on a birth center birth, so I had to buy a lot of what is usually provided by the hospital, but I also have a history of preterm birth, so I may be doubly stacked with supplies if I end up at the hospital 😂 makes packing my bag a little harder

  • @mrspokitstheriot477
    @mrspokitstheriot477 4 года назад +1

    I am in no way a minimalist, but I feel like after grossly overpacking with my first i bring even less than you do, granted I always knew I could count on if I needed something someone could bring it to me. Im not due for another two months but seems like hospitals will be very similar to now so I'm more likely to overpack this time if I cant depend on if I need something someone can bring it to me. Qith my second most of what I brought was snacks and toys for my 1y/o. With my third my husband went home right after I went into post partum recovery to take care of our then 2 and 3y/o and I dont think my bag was brought in until like 5hrs before we left (we left literally right at 24hrs.)
    Something I always tell women to bring that I never see anyone else recommend is toilet paper. And if you don't usually buy the more expensive, extra soft toilet paper then this is the time to splurge. It wasnt even 48hrs into my 5 day induction that my husband was complaining about the hospital toilet paper, and I too was grateful to have someone bring some from home. I also like having sensative baby wipes or flushable wet wipes after delivery.
    After delivering my third i finally decided to try adult diapers instead of pads and I will never go back. I even continued to use them afterwards for the first two days of my period because they were so heavy after having my third. I found them to be a life saver especially with having so many little kids because cleaning up and changing the diapers vs the pads was so much quicker and I didnt really have to worry about leakage. (In 2 months when I have this baby I will have 4 kids under 4.5y/o.)
    After my first i had full foot slippers brand new and I was so excited. It was a mothers day gift (I was due a few days before mothers day but delivered 16 days late) and I had so much swelling afterwards that although they fit (I love oversized slippers) I broke them in with my big swollen feet and legs (literally walked like a pirate with two peg legs for a month) so once the swelling went away the slippers didn't really fit at all. (I got character slippers from buyhappyfeet .com) after that I've only brought flip flops. Thankfully didnt have swelling like that with any other baby. They think it was because of the induction because even though I've been induced with all 3 babies I've delivered, my first indiction was 5 days where my other two were only 24hrs and 12hrs. Something about IV fluids for that long apparently can cause swelling.

    Q, did you find that taking a carry-on with everyone's stuff (baby, mom, dad) was better than taking 2 bags (mom/baby & dad)? Just trying to gauge if a carry-on looks a bit much 😅 I tend to overpack & I really aim to pack minimally... thanks!
