Maria Elena Salinas on Leaving Univision: “It’s Time for Me to Do Something Different”

” Maria Elena Salinas-co-anchor of Univision Network News and one of the most influential journalists in the U.S-came to American University in Washington, D.C., to screen her award-winning documentary, “Risking It All: Children at the Border,” as part of the “Films Across Borders” immigration film series in Washington, D.C. Described by the New York Times as “the voice of Hispanic America,” Salinas was interviewed by AU School of Communication professor Jane Hall and engaged with students about immigration, media and politics and her outstanding career. In this segment Salinas discusses her decision to retire as Univision co-anchor after 36 years. She says she wants to explore telling stories in documentaries and long-form journalism. “It’s time for me to do something different,” she says, noting that she always tells young people to pursue their dreams, and now she should, too. She wants to explore possibilities in other media, including reaching young people across media platforms. She says to laughter from the students that she is grateful to all the parents who forced their children to watch her Univision newscast every night because now she is known to this younger generation today.

She left because she didn't want to be reporting during the Trump administration. Many well experienced latin journalists retired before and just after trump became president. Therefore the "I wanted to do something different", the "I wanted a challenge", the "dream" reasons.
