I suggest find a place where they rent Sprinter vans that are all decked out for camping. Rent a short base one take it out play with it. Then rent a long base one do the same thing. And then make up your mind from there.
@mr.m325 He kind of did it - but a real test would include at least 2 overnights with cooking and all that goes with it, a ferry ride, a hill climb and Cruzie!😊
Dude. I think you should go with the larger one. Longer one. If you're doing 80-90% in city camping.... that extra space will be a premium. Save the Ford for the bush camping and tight areas.
Chrome I have a 2021 170ext built out without all the upgrades. I recently bought a 144 with all the upgrades and am currently building it out. There are some things that I love about the upgraded version. Adaptive cruise control, 360 camera view, AWD, all steering wheel controls. I installed the Agile Offroad RIP kit on my first sprinter and will be doing the same on the new build. My experience with Agile has been awesome!
Blue one wins. Your voice just says it all when you talk about it. I like the less bells and whistles better. Less things to break and be a head ache. But make sure it has the ones you want for sure. Dont sacrifice whats important to you. The right one will be there for you.
If you plan to take it into the bush often, go with a grey van with black 18-inch bottom trim and black roof rack. This will blend better in the bush than a big blue box.
Thanks Chrome! My husband ordered one of the van city keep it real hoodies for me for Christmas. He just gave it to me early. I love it. Thank you for all the stickers. Some will go on my van and our guitar cases, but I will post some on our travels. Merry Christmas!
I'm really excited for you. We're about the same age and we need to preserve our knees and back. My husband agreed to buying a new 2022 high roof Sprinter 170 4WD for me and we had it built out with super suspension and tires. It's white with minimal exterior bells and whistles (the inside is all bougie) because I like to be stealth when I'm in cities. I LOVE my van and I feel very comfortable going anywhere. Go for it!
Chrome definitely the gray / blue gray and without a doubt the longer van I believe you and Cruise would be much happier as far as being able to stand up and you will have more room❤😊❤❤
OMG I wish I could FF time to see which one you buy!!!!!!!!!! You will effing LOVE a big window in a slider! You can totally deactivate the automatic slider whenever you want so you can close it partially while camping etc. It's funny bc I wish my Transit had the two side doors and looks like you'll be going with a slider now. So fun to see you wiegh options for YOU and I think we all know where this is heading! Live large, my friend! Can't wait for this next chapter!!!!!!!!!!!
@@dross24MA It's crazy. I know when we bought our Transit and was building it out, I learned on RUclips how to disengage the power door for manual use. Never did need to and now I can't find the video and it's not in my build notes. Could be as easy as pulling a fuse? I honestly can't remember. 🫤
The Blue long wheel base looks amazing. I think going with less bells and whistles is a smart idea Chrome! This will be so exciting to watch you build it out
No matter what brand you chose i hope you go witht the extended van. Like you said you still have the OG van for that rought offroad adventure. Extended will be a great future proofed vehicle since your getting older.
As long as you are finally able to stand up in it - that’s most important. But, longer one provides Cruzie his own ginormous doggie bed and a hangout space for friends as well. 😊

Only big concern is the turbo. Turbos eat up your engine quicker. As for color, a light grey or white will be more comfortable in warmer weather. The darker the color, the more heat is attracted. Only mistake I made with my van is the color: black..and it gets hotter than Hades when camping out. Longer wheel base and high top a must! I'm only 5'3 and that high top works best for me :)
I HOPE THAT YOU READ THIS: I also researched the same three vans as you did for the past few years, always the extended versions. The blue is beautiful but it goes against what you always talked about. Stealth. You gonna be able to see that beautiful blue wale from a mile away lol.

And these options open up a whole new world of choices that can get some of us stuck in the state of indecision. Plus, you can protect the finish from scratches and from the elements.
Sprinter 170 owner here, living full time in van last 4 years. You won't regret upgrading to the Sprinter. A suspension upgrade from VanCompass or Agile Offroad should be your first purchase if the van you buy doesn't already have it. The difference in ride and handling on a heavy conversion is improved immensely. The move to full standing headroom and running hot/cold water plus a big galley cooking area and toilet/shower makes vanlife very comfortable. You'll love the Sprinter!
Check out the RUclips channel "We're The Russo's" when they compared the Ford Transit to the Mercedes Sprinter. They found that the Sprinter lacked power on an uphill climb whereas the Ford Transit didn't lack power. Now, there were differences as far as roominess and functions that you'll have to watch their comparison video.
I love the blue, however one major advantage to the gray without all the fancy exterior trim is purely from a psychological view, will draw less attention. Important when you park on the streets for the night.
My opinion only. I feel the Gray one would blend in nicely with the surroundings that you’ll be in. The blue one will be well we all have heard of the saying the pink elephant in the room. Again my opinion. Thank you for another wonderful video Chrome.
the longer wheelbase also needs longer parkingspots and are probably pricier on ferry. One other thing , I really like the way your door opens. I think for living it is better than sliding doors. Beeing able to stand up will be such an upgrade!
Welp , my idea is what ever color you like .... I am more particularly into Grey's , Silvers .. the 170 is the best option for you because you are 100% full time in it , cheers 🍻
If you ever want anonymity and privacy, go with the grey. But if that is not a concern, go with the fun color blue! Both will be beautiful all tripped out! Happy for you!
I have a 2016 170 rwd. Love it, great mileage too. The engines are not horrible at all. Maintenance is very important on this van. Two thoughts, go with the 170 but not the extended. You won't need the extra space and the departure angle is much worse. Secondly, read up on the net weight when outfitted. I had to go light on everything to keep it under GVW. more room, more stuff/weight. You wig regret this van at all.
Go for manly colour. The blue looks cool but if you get bored of it the will cheese you off aftwards. The dark grey looks classy. I can imagine that beefed up to the max. Match your apple watch! Danica can always buy hers in blue. But it's your choice
I have the extended high top silver sprinter with all the limo tented windows all the way around. It's the touring van that rides like you're in a sail boat. Since you already have the 4x4 go with comfy - comfy is nice. 🙂
I vote sprinter for a few reasons. 1. Awd. all wheel is totally necessary if you plan on going down dirt roads. 2. price. the mercedes is nice and all, but its hard to justify the price considering the sprinter can do everything the merc can. 3. extra high roofs. i know all models have the option. but for not much more than the ram van you get awd and the raised roof. Downsides is, sprinter can cost more to repair. but nowhere near as bad as any mercedes parts. best of luck
In my opinion, I think that the grey one would fit your lifestyle as you get older. The size of the van on the trail would be a minimum. You don't want to bushwack with that van. But, for traveling and for doing some backcountry while you're on the road. You are starting to do more traveling and your van you have now is set up now to get you into the bushwacking areas. Just my thoughts. It's just great to be a part of your journey.
Chrome, go with the long one, be comfortable! then get a lil trailer and a quad/atv and tow behind it. Use that for your brushbusting and have the best of both worlds. :)
As a sprinter owner with a 170 extended, if you want to Bunnyhop your van, you’re not gonna like what that does to the inside build - your shocks and upgrades help your suspension, an overall chassis from tweaking. it doesn’t help the build inside.
Wow, your research is invaluable - thank you! I plan on moving into a van sometime within the next few years so this video is very, very helpful. I really like the blue one. Happy Holidays, Chrome!
Buy based on specifications. Color is ridiculously easy to change on your own. If you found a long wheelbase in blue, then go for it. But if there's a plain white or grey that has better specs that fit your needs, get one of those instead and then get it custom painted to your exact color scheme.
Definitely the Sprinter, 170 Long wheelbase, double tires in the back, and a high roof so you can stand up. That true blue van is a royal coach indeed, love it, gorgeous. Hey Chrome, don’t park on the side of the road or in a T-intersection, someone could plow into you. Seem to be many medical emergency accidents lately. Stay safe.
I’m so happy for you Chrome your going to love your new home. Plus glad that we are going with you on your whole shopping journey. It’s will help me when our time to get one later this next year🙂

Grey. Doesn't standout. Doesn't look as dirty when it's dirty.
I have to agree with you on the dirt issue. I once owned a silver car and sometimes I only washed it every three months 🤣. It NEVER looked dirty.
Totes agree WN. Blue is asking for a knock in the night.

Just my thoughts. It's just great to be a part of your journey.
It's nice when you don't have to ask what the price is.
Chrome, go with the long one, be comfortable! then get a lil trailer and a quad/atv and tow behind it. Use that for your brushbusting and have the best of both worlds. :)
Extended Shiney Dark Grey then you can paint the Ambo the blue for Danica.
Interesting idea...😮surprised!
As a sprinter owner with a 170 extended, if you want to Bunnyhop your van, you’re not gonna like what that does to the inside build - your shocks and upgrades help your suspension, an overall chassis from tweaking. it doesn’t help the build inside.
FYI any modification on a brand new vehicle which is not from the manufacture will be voided the warranty.
Not necessarily. As long as the shops doing the work are CAA and Mercedes approved then the warranty is protected.
Your putting a non factory part in a major drive train component will void the drivetrain warranty regardless of where the work was done.
Wow, your research is invaluable - thank you! I plan on moving into a van sometime within the next few years so this video is very, very helpful. I really like the blue one. Happy Holidays, Chrome!
Ohhhh I like the blue on the longer base.
Buy based on specifications. Color is ridiculously easy to change on your own. If you found a long wheelbase in blue, then go for it. But if there's a plain white or grey that has better specs that fit your needs, get one of those instead and then get it custom painted to your exact color scheme.
Great job Crome you could go white and have it wrapped any color and protect the body work at the same time
Definitely the blue one. The LED headlights and heated seats are the only options that are a must have.
You asked so I will say the grey one, not the blue. But it's your house man!!
Stay safe.
Grey all the way
I’m so happy for you Chrome your going to love your new home. Plus glad that we are going with you on your whole shopping journey. It’s will help me when our time to get one later this next year🙂
Don't buy a sprinter unless you want more transmission problems! Finish the ambo then make your decision
Greatful for the real life updates and struggles. Thank you
