So I'm a superfan of this movie (seen probably 20 times) but I've never understood the interaction between Curtis and the MC: Curtis: 5 dollars says the Dreamettes don't win MC: You got it, they weren't gonna win anyways I'm having a really hard time matching their meanings with the words. So by intention, Curtis is clearly bribing the MC so the Dreamettes don't win (and become more likely to sign with him). But usually when you say "$ that (condition)" you're making a bet FOR that condition. Like if I said "$50 says Giants win this Sunday" that means I'm betting they DO win, and if they win, I COLLECT $50 - not give it away. So the phrase "5 dollars says the Dreamettes don't win" should imply that if they don't win (which they don't), he should be COLLECTING $5, not giving it away. Whatever, chalk it up to weird language, but I understood the intention. Then the MC says "you got it, they weren't gonna win anyways" - is this supposed to be implying that the contest is somehow rigged? But like, couldn't that also just mean he knows the result already cuz - I don't know - he's the one hosting the show and announcing the results? Why would it seem strange that he knows they wouldn't win, seems totally normal to me. Which brings up why is he so smug that they weren't gonna win anyways? Cuz he took Curtis's $5 for free or that he somehow "gamed" him? This confusion I don't even understand the intention. Is Curtis trying to get him to get the judges' results then go rogue and announce a contrary result - uhh wouldn't he immediately get discovered and in trouble because the judges knew he read the wrong result? If you actually were trying to collect a bribe, wouldn't you not make the guy think he did it in vain and risk angering them? I don't know, this exchange never made any sense to me.
The MC said they weren't going to win because Effie stopped him from grabbing Deena's butt. What Curtis meant was that the five dollars are saying to keep the Dreamettes from winning. Like here's five dollars to keep the Dreamettes from winning.
Love this much love from Ghana.
