The choreography was done by a woman called Fatima Robinson. She has done some iconic dances like "put your hands where my eyes can see" by busts rhymes and "backstreet's back" by the backstreet boys. The dream girls DVD has an uncut version of her audition tape to choreograph this movie and it's this entire sequence from start to finish. It was epic! I wish it was in youtube. 😓
Exactly. I never thought much about Tambourines but after seeing Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, my attitude changed dramatically. Also what happened to The Dreams with Cadillac, is notorious in The UK. For example, A Girl Group called Girlthing who were the proteges of Simon Cowell saw their Song Pure & Simple given to another Group called Hear'Say which they took to Number One. They never had another hit record after that and fell into obscurity. Take That who were created by Nigel Martin Smith after seeing the success of New Kids On The Block. Their debut song was "It Only Takes A Minute" originally done by The Tavares but the "Kids" didn't know that. Then Girls Aloud had a Hit Record called "See The Day" originally done by DC Lee who was one of the "Original" Members of Wham who was in The Club Tropicana Video. Girls Aloud have also covered Push It, Fame, Flashdance, and Jump For My Love by The Pointer Sisters. In her Book Kimberley Walsh complained that their Version in Look Actually wasn't in the Movie but The Pointer Sisters Version was but she didn't realize that what they did was part of History since the 1950's of White Artists taking Black Songs and having the bigger hit.
The Supremes actually wore Red Dresses on The Ready Steady Go: The Sounds Of Motown TV Special with The Late Dusty Springfield in 1965. Check it out, it's very good.
Yes. The Supremes wore Red Fringe Dresses when they did The Ready Steady Go The Sounds Of Motown in 1965 with The Miracles, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder & Martha & The Vandellas. It has never been on DVD as far as I know but Dick Clark bought the Rights and Berry Gordy sued him for Royalty Rights. They settled but Dick was a smart Man. He later acquired rights to The TAMI Show (Teenage Music International).
Yep. It was like an incarnation of Jackie Wilson whose Music reached a whole New Generation of Fans. On The UK Talent Dance Show The Greatest Dancer, Two Of The Judges Dances to "Reet Petite", then The Company who did The Claymation Style Cartoon Wallace & Gromit did a Video Tribute to him, and then They had a Video of a Couple Dancing To "The Sweetest Feeling" that was one of the Audition Songs that Will Young Sang who became the First Pop Idol in the History of the Franchise. Also they used "To Be Loved" in a Commercial for Milk.
The amazing choreography and Eddie being robbed aside, as SOON as CC started talking about Curtis’ fraud going back to Steppin’ to The Bad Side I rewinded all the way back and saw what he was talking about.
I remember seeing this in the movie and this number got a round of applause, among others. What a joy it was, we had to see it three times. Phenomenal film!!
All star cast first rate show Thanks to all who worked to bring this to life From the cast to this cleaning up the stage Put art at it's best May art never die for the world would become a dark place with out it.
Mary Wilson saw Dreamgirls when it first debuted in 1982. She admitted she cried because she said it was The Supremes Story and it was. Michael Bennett who created the play was once a former Dancer who appeared on some of those Old School Rock 'N Roll Shows from the 1960's.
One hell of a movie all star cast and don't forget those working behind video those who did everything from setting up the stage to those who cleaned up afterwards
Curtis was very devious but very smart. He knew where the Demographics were. Chicago, was next to Philadelphia, and New York at one point the epicenter for Music. Philadelphia of course had American Bandstand, Chicago had Vee Jay Records that Jerry Butler & The Impressions Recorded "For Your Precious Love" in 1958 not to mention Chess Records that Recorded Chuck Berry & Bo Diddley amongst others. Also what he did was of course was "Payola" (Monetary Bribes) and Alan Freed was ruined because of it while Dick Clark "covered" his Tracks. He owned a Factory that pressed Records recorded by Artists who appeared on American Bandstand. He also had a small ownership in Swann Records that had Artists who also appeared on American Bandstand. He never actually took Monetary Payments but when he had to testify before Congress he was told to give up The Music Business and say with American Bandstand. He chose Bandstand but he lost 8 Million in the process. In 1963 he turned down The Beatles for distribution and admitted he couldn't have been more wrong about a Group. Also there was a strong Black Population in Philadelphia, as well as Chicago who were descendants of the South.
I'm glad they showed more of the bottom as far as the choreography that way we can actually see the footwork and stuff. Cuz for the life of me I couldn't get that little hop Lorrell and Jimmy do right 😂 Am I the only one who doesn't here the soprano towards the end on "step step to the bad side"? I just here alto and tenor.
Hard to believe it's going to be 40 Years next year for Dreamgirls. God Bless David Geffen who "Financed" this play as well as "Cats." He sold a Mansion in Connecticut to Michael Bennet who created Dreamgirls.
I have a girlfriend, Ethel Beatty, who was in the original stage show. Terrific cast. Wonderful to see Loretta Devine in the movie as an homage to the show.
@@lesliecolyer_brown6208Also Sheryl Lee Ralph did Search For Tomorrow after she left Dreamgirls and it is probably next to Grease The Musicals with the strongest ties to Soaps.
Another fun fact was what they were doing was "originally" created at Motown in terms of Choreography and it was recreated with Popstars all over the world not to mention K-Pop in Korea.
Exactly! He grew up seeing of top R & B Singers get "robbed" and even to this day it happens. In fact in the UK alot of Boyband/Girlgroup Icons cover Songs by Chic, Diana Ross, The Tavares, and Shalamar not to mention Silk and even Adina Howard. If the Songwriters still owns the Rights, they get "Paid". I had no idea that "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell was an obscure Northern Soul Song from Philly by Gloria Jones. Even The Moody Blues did their version of "Go Now" when Denny Laine was in The Group before joining the Faces then Wings. It was originally done by Bessie Banks.
Curtis was also smart that he kept the money in a safe and not in a Bank Account. No trace of payola. Yet he kept the accounts up to date knowing what Radio Stations were playing the song. 😊
Eddie got robbed. He should have won the oscar for this role
Karen Morris that is true
FACTS!
You think!! He made everyone look like amateurs compared to his greatness in this.
That belt 3:05 alone should’ve gotten him the Oscar lol sang his ass off
Right
Eddie Murphy was Awesome as Jimmy Early
they offered Andre 3000 that part first. he turned it down
But most importantly, it was a great part.
Jimmy early was Eddie murphey
@@gamerincorporated154 Got love for Andre 3000 but I don't think he could've brought the same swag that Eddie brought to that character.
Agreed!
I would love to see the mens' rehearsal sequence uncut. The choreography is outrageous and the dancers are workin' it.
I'm sure that they wanted to make Michael Bennett and Michael Peters proud because they were the ones who helped Dreamgirls become a Classic.

Wow I seen this so many times and never caught that lol

When I seen it I was like WTF
them back up dancers are lit
Eddie Murphy killed it! His vocals are off the chain....talented brother!!!! Take him out of the movie it is not worth watching!
He should have won the Oscar for Jimmy Early that year. He was robbed!!!!

I don’t see enough people talking about how amazing this performance was. 🔥
The choreography in this scene is ridiculous..I love it!!!!
I just noticed that CiCi was the dance instructor for this scene. So he's not only a singer/song writer but a choreographer too.
Early in the movie they say that he choreographs all of the Dreamettes' routines.

The slower intro by Jamie was amazing!
Jaime Foxx did the DAMN thing!
