I'm from Galle and studied at St Aloysius College.
In 1962 if you are sinhalese, you could study in only sinhala medium.
If you are tamil you could study in tamil Medium.
But if you are a Muslim or a burger or of mixed parents or of other country of origin, you could study in any medium. This is fact.

Thank you very much for all your hard work. Excellent presentation as usual. However I have to correct you on one point. Mr. DS Senanayake had a fall and sustained an intracranial bleed. Those days no CT facilities and it was probably a late diagnosis. There were no qualified neurosurgeons at that time and a neurosurgeon from Pakistan was called. Unfortunately by the time he arrived it was too late. So the real cause of death was intracranial bleeding following the fall from the horse. I confirmed this with one of my teachers: the senior most neurosurgeon in the country.

Dear Kaari, thank you very much for educating us about the false assumptions in relation to the concept of "official state language", particularly about the difference between the use of Sinhala language in education institutions and the use of Sinhala language as the language of political administration of the state.
Even after the independence, English language had become another weapon for some elite class to thrive in our society. I would argue that authorities did not want to teach English properly in schools as they wanted to keep the language as their weapon and a mean for the persistence of themselves at the higher class.

Yes, one of the best approach to keep people politically illiterate is to keep them from the positive aspects of the western society and expose them to the negative aspects more. Whether we like to accept it or not the English language has become the path to those positive aspects of the western society due to the actions of the colonial invaders. In that scenario, the English language has been kept in an elite status to keep the ordinary people politically illiterate.
@@domari9459 the elite class what I defined is the local political class who nourished from colonialism and has been in the power since 1940s. Still they are decision makers in economy, education and every key sectors of Sri Lanka. They represent the Authorities. I agree with you. English language is the key to lterrate our society. Yes, that is true.
In an ideal world we should not create significant political differences based on linguistic differences. However, the language is only a one aspect of cultural differences even though it is a major factor among cultural differences. Other cultural memes, habits, religion, environmental differences etc come into play as well. The population in north and east in Sri Lanka has been somewhat isolated from the majority Sinhalese, particularly during colonial times, hence the reason for the significant population in north and east who couldn't speak or understand a word of Sinhalese. Having a political administration system that would allow them to use their language in educational, political, law administration and other administrative sectors is a wise approach to prevent them from developing a feeling of abandonment and discrimination due to their cultural differences. North and East are harsher areas to develop when compared to other parts of Sri Lanka. Therefore, the economic difficulties also come into play. The abovementioned political elite exploiting the grievances of people(both Tamil and Sinhala people and Tamil/Sinhala political and social elite) has continued the infamous "divide and rule" policy of colonial administration. This has been the major cause of the modern phase of the conflict between Sinhala and Tamil population. However, it is advisable to view that the majority of Tamils(or Sinhalese) would not have bought into the idea of oppression due cultural differences rhetoric if there was no economic pressure on people in north and east(or south).
Any power devolution politicial system in Sri Lanka should avoid devolution of power that is based on any ethnic divisional lines as it would re-enforce the notion of oppression due to ethnic differences and would also allow India and the west to keep exploiting the grievances of Tamils(and Sinhalese) for their own political and economic needs. Of course, such devolution would also allow local born political elite to exploit the grievances of Tamils and SInhalese to continue for their own political and economic benefit .
In essence, I agree with you. But, we need to aware of and take into account the historical background of the Tamil population in north and east. The major reason for the existence of Tamil speaking population in north(and east) is the historical influence from South India due close proximity to South India and the persistent invasions from South Indian kings when they were strong. Of course, non-invasive migration throughout the history has been happening in significant numbers from time to time, but the reality is that the people in north and east have been switiching between majority Tamil Hindu and and Sinhala Buddhist which would've coincided with the influence by South Indian kings and their invasions of those times. In other words, these are(were) the same people that had to either stay as Tamil Hindu or gradually become Sinhala Buddhist according to the whim of rulers of South India (and perhaps Sinhala kings). This is why the education system and the teaching of historically accurate history is important for both SInhala and Tamil population. Now, you can understand the reason behind the active avoidance by post colonial political elite from teaching accurate history in our schools. The more divided the Tamil and Sinhalese people are, better for the political elite.
Getting rid of these political elite class is of paramount importance to be able to rebuild Sri Lanka.

if not for those reforms srilanka would have been like singaore . i like to say it that way why ,because even tho the country run well by indian ,han chinese,and and malay muslims . the native people livin inside has worst conditions .. bcz there low access to education ,local buddhist have to convert to islam to have better economic oppotunites . it like a banana republic . you get what im sayin right
