Sir, could we get an upload of this scene? It does not seem to be anywhere in the internet. "If I stay here, your families are in jeopardy. Is anything more important than their safety?" "Yes, their freedom." -- G'Kar and a Narn in Babylon 5:"A Day in the Strife"
"Ah, arrogance and stupidity all in the same package. How efficient of you!" Can be said about politics and politicians in many countries. B5 is really a gold mine of quotable quotes.
I believe Heinlein said it best: "Coruage is the complement of fear. A man who is fearless cannot be courageous. (He is also a fool.) - Time Enough for Love
I'm reminded of a similar quote from a paratrooper sergeant when he was asked to describe courage. His reply? 'They're the ones that are scared. But they go anyway.'
Susan saying that races such as the Mimbarie are more human than her x-boyfriend is all the more powerful when one remembers that her brother died in the Earth Mimbar War.
"Reason's not useless, but it's also not enough. Faith and reason are the shoes on your feet. You can further with both than you can with just one." 😎 An excellent quote to be sure, and one that MANY people would be able to benefit from. Especially in this insane day and age.
@@AuthorDodgeMerrin Faith and reason are not competitors. There is nothing to "balance" between the two. The key is to realize that neither is the ultimate end; they are both merely essentials in the pursuit of that which is good and true.
You may travel further with faith, but your more likely to get lost. Reason may be slow, slower than many have the patience for, but you get there for sure.
have quoted that last bit to a priest , when i was about 16 , was suspended from school n almost expelled , till i explained what it meant to the school board , quickest backdown ever
The tears of Truth B5 wrenched from my soul... Help me know I'm alive... Few experiences came close. Thank you JMS for sharing such wisdom. It helped build my foundation
"There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain." One of my favourites.
I thought he looked familiar! It was nagging at me, especially when they started talking about gropos and I was thinking 'Wait, I thought he was a pilot??'
For an atheist to write about "faith" as being equal to "reason" was refreshing, and showed that JMS wrote human characters, even if they were sometimes aliens, not just proselytizing stereotypes for particular political or philosophical views.
Definitely one of my biggest reasons for loving the show so much. Same idea with what Shepherd Book said in "Serenity". "I don't care what you believe in, just believe in it."
@@robertbusek30 DS9 came pretty close, the Federation downplayed it but the Bajorans took theirs seriously. Even if it turned out to be aliens they worshipped.
Not a quote in itself, but humans who get into space usually have their 'fight or flight' reactions mostly permanantly on the 'fight' setting. We get *mean* when we're frightened.
I still like the episode ending in season 1 where the reporter ask Commander Sinclair why go to outer space when there is things to do on Earth. Sinclair's response resonates with me. I have the clip on my channel if you are interested in hearing what he says.
It could be really dangerous to resist during turture. All you achieve are pain and suffering, sooner or later they will break you anyway. Better would be to convince yourself that a different reality is true and tell them that. This way your loved one's are safe and you keep your sanity. Afterwards you can always strangle them in they sleep...
I'm so bloody sick of the Blake Association and their " alternative realities ". I thought we were fighting the Bolsheviks- wrong, we were fighting the Russians! And they didn't break me yet.
JMS had so much wisdom about the relationship between our secular and religious lives back then. It's kind of sad he's become something of a raving Social Marxist.
Remember this is the same man who is an atheist but who portrays religion and spirituality in a way that no sci fi or fantasy epic ever has. Do we the viewers win? Of course we do. Every time we acknowledge that sometimes the message will always outstrip the messenger.
WORDS OF WISDOM I`m Polish and you may ask so what ? And than I will and must answer you this . We know what it`s like to be broken and accused of things , I know of pain and I know of freedom , and having a choice between the two My choice is ? ___________
You're still broken. You live in a la la land- the Volyn Massacre had never happened. Do you and JMS remember what was written on that stone??? " Lord, if I ever forget about them you can forget about me! " I say it every day like a prayer. What " freedom " are you talking about?
If the faith and reason quote had said belief, then maybe I would agree. But faith is belief indifferent to evidence, and that I don't see any possibility of being a positive. If you keep believing something despite evidence to the contrary, you are a fool. Sometimes your emotions don't allow you to easily surrender a belief you have, but that is when reason needs to come in, to try to adjust your beliefs, which is not really a process you're in conscious control over..
the character saying it may be religious but you can use it as an atheist too. it doesnt have to be about religion. it can be about a philosophy you have or an ideal. no one truly acts on reason alone we all have certain things we'd like to be true or aspire to such as how we would want society and the world to be instead of how it is. if you have gone through hard times and depression and had only reason you most likely wouldnt survive.
I think you missed the point. Fath and reason go hand in hand. Even if one were not to admit. Your assumption (Faith) is that it is unreasonable to believe in such things because it's based on emotion. Assumption itself is born out of an emotion, that is thr belief of what you know is to be true. To the religious and the atheist, faith in something is reasonable. Both parties have faith that there is a God (for the religious) and no God for the atheistic. There is no evidence to prove or disprove either. To do so would take assumptions and logical leaps. Hence why the easiest dispelling for atheists is "if there is a God why does he allow X, to happen". To the faithful, whom read or listen to the Gosepel that same question was one of Jesus' temptations and thus knowingly at a subconscious level they know thr answer is free will. Faith and reason go together because as they say, when reason fails...its often faith that keeps a person moving forward.
@@everyonethinksyoureadeathm5773 i think you are falling into the assumption that everyone has faith which is simply not true. an atheist doesnt have to prove there is no god juts like he doesnt need to prove there are no unicorns.the burdens of proof is on those who claim god exists.atheists simply see there is no evidence that god exists.
@@everyonethinksyoureadeathm5773 Faith is, by its definition, not reasonable. If it were reasonable, it would not be indifferent to evidence, and the person would hold a reasoned belief, not a belief on faith. And I disagree with you one there being no evidence in the issue of a god existing or not. There is a whole lot of evidence, and so far, none of it indicates the possibility of a godly existence, not to speak of any one particular nature of such. It is not disproving the existence of a god, but it is merely saying that we have no indication whatsoever that one might exist, and as such can summarily dismiss any claim to the contrary until those claims can actually hold up under scrutiny. We can however look at any given religion and see that even without looking for physical evidence for that particular god, the descriptions of and definitions for that god is either internally inconsistent or inconsistent with each other, for every religion humanity has come up with so far. Once we have found a god concept that actually doesn't disprove itself, we can start looking at whether there is actually any evidence for that god's existence.
"That poor Drazi" was one of Sharridan´s torturers, he was just there ahead of the time as a sympathetic character, a fellow inmate to create an emotional connection before going in to hurt him.
