  • Video shows the construction of a Teardrop trailer. Started in July 2010, the build took just over a year with the first trip in August 2011. The trailer is 63 inches wide (60 inches inside dimension) and 126 inches long. Video shows a lot of building hints.

    That is a beautiful build. One of the best builds I've seen.FYI to viewers you can buy plywood larger than 4x8 at lumber yards...i buy 5x10 and 5x12 all the time...

    Excellent job! one of the nicest I've ever seen, and I've been looking at them on youtube for about 3 years now. Getting all kinds of ideas for when I build mine (hopefully this summer). This is the first time I've commented on any of them, but this one is just so superb!

    4x8 seems so tight to me (I'm tall) although I may end up in that size. The filon siding and the checker plate, along with all the detail, makes for an excellent build. Really well done.

    Even though it took over a year to build it was worth it. Even the problems were fun to figure out. The metal on the front was to thick to bend without too much spring back. I built a 24 inch diameter mold and clamped the metal around it (it took 3 adults) and left it for a week. When I took it off the mold it had the perfect curve . the building process was very relaxing.

    This is when you keep building them and selling them off until you build that "perfect" piece of art for yourself, and never make another one again.. great step by step run through.

    4X8 is the traditional size for Teardrops because of plywood size. The Box on this one is 5x10 which does sound like much more but increases storage and building opportunities greatly. Inside holds a Queen size mattress.

The first time always take the longest but I do not believe anyone would be willing to pay me fr my time even at a few dollars per hour, .Working on a website showing and giving more details on the build process.

  • @cthorn54
    @cthorn54  11 лет назад

    made the molding out of scrap mahogany left over from build...Hardwood comes in random widths so with the initial cuts on the rough lumber you end with a lot narrow scrap.

    What a total hack job! [not] lol! I believe that's the finest built teardrop EVER!

  • @cthorn54
    @cthorn54  11 лет назад

    hard to guestimate... I spent a lot of time sitting and trying to plan my next step since I ha no plan. What size to make! The most practical is 4 foot by 8 foot the size of a standard sheet of plywood and most other building materials. I decided for the sole reason that I wanted to have queen size bed (60” wide) that I would build one to meet that spec and since I was going to have to make allowances for widths greater than 4 foot wide that I would also go longer than the 8 foot standard.

    Materials $3000-$3500 but I did not cheap on anything. I probably have another $1500-$2000 in new tools I bought. My plan, if I have a picture and some dimensions I can build it. The trailer was designed around queen size mattress, 60 inches by 80 inches.

  • @1hot57

    What did you use to glue on your Filon? Nice job!

    • @cthorn54
      @cthorn54  7 лет назад

      Contact Cement, apply to both pieces and let dry to touch, once they touch, there is no adjusting, press firmly. The trick is to get the two pieces close and then press. This can be accomplished with sticks of wood between that are slid out to allow a control movement. For this installation I built a temporary rack to hold the filon above the Teardrop and used sticks to control the process, look at 6:32 of the video for pics.

  • @surfdude990

    what was used to trim the edges of where the roof and wall meet?

  • @1hot57
    @1hot57 7 лет назад

    Is for the info! How has the filon held up? I had a guy yesterday tell me do to use it that it will bubble up! I told him to bad I had already bough it and I was going to use it!

    • @cthorn54
      @cthorn54  7 лет назад +1

      The filon was held above with temporary rack after the glue was applied you need to make sure the glue is dry to the touch before applying pressure. Try some experiments with some small pieces till you are comfortable with the procedure/
