Shifter Problems on an SVT Focus -- Cheap, Easy Fix!

- In this video, I found my SVT Focus Shifter not working properly. The car would not shift into 5th or 6th gear. There is a small bushing on the back of the transmission where the shift cables attach that can be terribly worn out. This makes getting the car to shift properly difficult. Also, there was a white plastic piece on the shift tower that was broken and fell out of place. This also contributed to my shifting problems. After talking with experienced members of the SVT Focus Facebook Page (join if you haven't already), I was able to dig in and fix the problem. Many different sources exist for buying these shifter bushings and other miscellaneous parts. Please purchase from an active member of the SVT Focus page such as the following:
Vince Morasco, Admin of "SVT Focus shifting issues and solutions" page on Facebook. This was the source for my Delrin bushing as seen in this video.

Matt Rowe, Owner/Admin of "5 Acre Focus" Facebook Page. He works on these cars and offers a metal shifter bushing for purchase as well as many other hard to find SVT Focus parts.

Either are great guys and very helpful in my experience. They should be able to get your car shifting better than ever. Thanks guys for all you do for this community!

Means a lot. Thank YOU for watching. It has been a fun project.
Nicely done...looks like it did drive like a new car and I love the pull at the end. Just picked up a new to me '03 Black 5dr SVT with the EAP rims like yours but have been afraid to even power shift the car with unknown timing belt history...parts for timing job are literally in my trunk lol. I too just received my 2lb spring from Mike at 5AcreFocus and going to be performing open tesioner surgery on my new Continental Litens tesnioner 😆. Maybe I should film & post it 🤔
Keep up vids, love the Focus content
Haha niiiiiiice. Ya that's damn similar. The pulls are fun. I can finally push the car after owning it for what seems like forever. How long has your car been on this belt? I'm assuming it's due for a change. Ya it's nice at least the springs are available even if it's a pain now to have to swap the springs. you definitely should film it. The more videos on here the better is what I say. Thanks for the kind words. 🙏
I am so glad that I found this video because I have had my car worked on twice because it stopped wanting to go into 5th and 6th gears.. So now I have been driving back an forth to work in 4th because I don't have the top 2 gears since some time early last year.. But thanks to you I now know EXACTLY what I need to upgrade to make it stop breaking or whatever it's doing, so THANK YOU so much
Dude that's awesome!!! I drove mine for a month or so around town in only 1-4 and it was so annoying. Felt like a different car when I figured out the problem. Good luck and please post back if it fixes you up!!!
@@605BOLT I am DEFINITELY going to order a few things from the same guys that you went through and hopefully it solves the problem.. But I at the very least know exactly what is causing my problem.. So for that I thank you so much for your help on this
Just saw this comment for some reason. My pleasure to help.
@@605BOLT great video, thank you! do you have a link for where I can get that bushing?
@@j.lipton9631 it's in the description of this video. 👍 Two good options for purchase.
Nice, got my air box out I’m going to check the bushings. Got a couple of 2lb timing tensioner springs from 5Acre focus. I never knew the svt part was discontinued until I saw your clip a few posts back. Keep em coming please!
That makes me feel good man. That's the purpose of the videos. Keeping these little cars alive. Very cool.
@605BOLT Had the issues when I got around to checking. Ive looked for that white plastic piece, no go. How did the zip ties go? Might cut/grind something the right size from scrap automotive plastic like the arms of an auto level headlight or something else thats graded for a moving part.
also you can add a washer behind that clip on the shaft on the shifter in front of that white plastic arm on the right, only a matter of time before the cables bust while youre driving.
Sorry I missed this comment. That would be a great idea.
Thanks for this series! I have an 03 and had a similar issue with the linkage. I completely removed the counterweight that you ziptied the bushing onto and I can still shift just fine. It has no linkage "feel" any more but it does work. Now I want to go back and see if I can get that part working again. Also, I am looking for the square bushing too and I am not sure where to find it.
Oh dang. Ya I didn't think about removing that counterweight. Maybe some of the guys I linked in the description would have access to a new white plastic bushing. Mine is daily status so no biggie it's a little bit cobbled together. Thanks for the nice comment. 👍
the SVT-F is running nice
U know it. Ran 100 miles on it in the last two days. Fun little car for sure.
Do you know why my svt has trouble going into 1st when the engines running? I have no shift issues when the engines off.
I can't say. Sounds to me like it's either clutch or throw out bearing related. You could try shifting the gears without the shifter mechanism by unhooking the shift linkage and using your hands to shift the gears under the hood. This would rule out potential shifter linkage issues.
Hey I have a svt ford focus 2002 where do you get your parts from? Because I’m having trouble finding them.
It's always a pain to find them. Usually I link the parts in the description of the video. But generally I use Amazon, rockauto, and tasca parts. Just kind of depends what I need. If I can't get it new I get it from a local salvage yard or sometimes even off the SVT Focus Facebook page. Lots of guys sell parts on there. There is a classifieds page on Facebook too.
How did you remove the bolts with the transmission in the car? Mine are so tight!!
Idk. I used a bunch of different wrenches to get up in there. I prefer swivel head gear wrenches if you have them in your toolbox.
New sub ! Liked 🚀🚀😀❤️❤️
Much appreciated. Glad you found the vid interesting. 🍻
Thanks for the video. Is the first shift bushing you replaced accessible without dropping the trans? I'm not familiar with the underside of the car(yet) as I just acquired the car and felt the slop in the shifting.
All these bushings are replaceable by just reaching in under the hood. Need to remove the intake tube. 👍
@@605BOLT Cool, thanks so much. Your video seems to be the only one addressing what causes the play and how to fix it. The other ones I found just seem to cover getting a new shift lever, which doesn't fix the source of the problem. And thanks for linking us with who sells the bushings as I've just gotten in contact with them👍
@@ronchang9791 Great to hear! The guys that sell the bushings are good dudes. Glad the video was helpful for you.
I need to change the damn cable, but I can't find it, please help me 2004 ford focus svt 6 speed transmission shift cable
Going to have to try the junk yards. Hit up car-part.com to search yards local to you.
@@605BOLT Thank you for the information, but I don't understand why it's so difficult to find a part, especially in such a big country
@@selahattinyaman4340 they only made these cars for three years. 14000 total svts in existence from factory. Most of the parts have since been discontinued.
Had this same issue now i have all gears but reverse now went out any ideas on how i could get reverse to work?
If nothing of your fix came apart then it could possibly be in the shifter area as well. Pull the shift boot off and have a look. If it was me though, I would have someone help you and basically reach your hand down in where the shifter cables attach to the transmission. Use your hand and try to verify that the shift tower is in the reverse position. You want to try to make sure the problem is shifter/cables related and not internal to the transmission. Based on the result of that test, you'll know which direction to be looking. Hope this helps!
@605BOLT I have reached down and put the tower into reverse position with my hand does that mean it's cable related?
@@SCRAPPY- ya if the car moves now in reverse you know your transmission isn't screwed up. It's something in the shifter bushings or the cables or something like that. Must be a broken piece somewhere. Either under the shifter or on the tower or maybe a bushing is wore out or broke. Have to check around and see what you see.
Thank you appreciate it
Can you give us the link where you bought the bushing
The guy I purchased from is named Vince Morasco. He is just a regular guy who contracts these made so he doesn't have a website you purchase from directly. I used paypal and paid that way and he sent it directly to my house. Very easy. Sorry if that was confusing.
@@605BOLT i got mine from vince as well. Great guy.
@@benjaminkunkel2239 right on Ben. Thanks for mentioning for future people browsing. 🍺
Hey I got an 02 focus svt and was wondering how do you get this shift knob off?? I’m having a hard time haha
I don't remember for sure but I think it was just lefty loosey unthread it from the shaft. Most are that way.
Actually I think I had to pull the shifter boot up and get underneath it. I think there was a nut under there. Been a long time since I had this car though. 😬 Be careful with the shifter boot.
@@605BOLT mines already broken lollll but thank you I’ll do my best to find it
@@01Samuraii haha dang ok. Ya I think it was under the shift boot somewhere.
I have a 2003 svt and reverse only works sometimes and it doesn’t have second and all my down low gears fee like there not there and I don’t know what it could be
I would imagine something in the linkage is broken or worn. Definitely check out these parts and see if anything seems loose. You want to look at the tower on the transmission that I show in this video and also the bushings under the shifter boot. There are multiple areas where slop can develop.
So you think the trans is good?
The reason I lost second is Bc I kinda let out clutch to fast
But it still works sometimes
@@bdayungin4935 hmm that almost sounds like a different deal. Clutch let out speed shouldn't really matter. Might be something else broken on your car.
Goodmorning bro where did you get those bushings from?
Links in the video description but there are a few different guys that sell them.
@@605BOLT oh ok I missed it I will go back and watch it thank you bro.
@@eottracingteam8274 no problem. I have it linked in the video description though. So you don't really need to watch it again. It's in the drop-down under the video on this page. 👍 If you can't find it, hit me up.
need to replace shift cables.
It shifts real nicely now. Could use cables sure but it's night and day different and plenty good for a daily (which is what this is).
11:03 hmm, engine temp really dropped after doing those pulls.
I filmed the closing comments before I did the WOT pulls but reordered it in the editing. Good eye though!!
@@605BOLT hmmmm. Not according to the trip meter. Pulls were at 102 miles and comments with lowered temp was at 104 miles. Awesome videos btw. I have the same car but I don't have the ability to rebuild it like you did though. Wish I could do all the same work you did.
@@danbsomething1217 oh weird. I see that now. I filmed this a long while ago and assumed I reordered. It had a coolant leak at the time. The coolant crossover was cracked. Maybe that caused it? Shit i have no idea. I may have filmed the wot pulls just before I pulled it into the garage to do bushings. No idea anymore really. I realized I didn't have any pulls in it and figured I'd get some recordings. Don't remember the sequence exactly.
@@danbsomething1217 what year svt do you have? This car has been one hell of a project. Steering rack is leaking now.... So I guess there's another video coming then hahaha🙄😂
@@605BOLT Mines an 03. Wanna see it? I'll post a video if you'd like to have a look.
