NIce !! I did similar when living in Maine. Paid $1,000 and went to classes with computer time for rules of the road (the hardest part). Then took the class test, passed and got my certificate. Had to take that to the Coast Guard in Boston and actually take the sailing endorsement there. Passed. Brand new Master 100 ton. Best wishes and go for the largest license you can.
Thank you for the video. I would very much like to see your summation of the entire course once you have finished and gotten your license. I am about to begin the course and related process to get my 6-pack licence. By the way, I'm a 72 year old combat veteran. The government doesn't help with the costs of the course. Like you, I love to learn new things and I'm super excited. Good luck, you can do this! 😊
For those not ready to make this huge investment, there are lots of US Sail & Power Squadron chapters around ("USPS" now called 'americas boating club' or something) and their classes are inexpensive & taught by local volunteer sailors & power boaters.. like for only $65 or so (+ yearly membership fee of $60 or something more) you can get a full 8-week class on chart plotting, or engine maintenance, etc.. In the local engine maint class for example it was taught by a local well-respected diesel shop owner-mechanic, total A+ class, he was an expert on everything about maintaining engines. Even including a master navigation class with sextant. Pretty cool. But in recent years it seems the u.s.p.s. has suffered a bit in local classes because things are moving all online, so the local pool of knowledge especially important in piloting class, (the "local navigation knowledge" stuff) has been diminishing. Official capt'ns license sure is a great longer term goal.
Good for you passion for a hobby is wonderful while acquiring knowledge along with becoming certified your able to speck and share with confidence plus job opportunities looks good on you captain ...
How many years do they go back on sea time??,,,back in the day I ran AB OFFSHORE on 200ft ,,and went to 100ton inland later.I also wanted to go into delivery service ,but was told my sea time was expired.☆☆☆GREAT VIDEO,,,,-☆☆☆
Sea time never expires but you need documents signed by the captain or owner of the ship signing off on your time, and you do need at least 90 days in the last three years
Thanks all information is good information thanks for taking the time and giving us a heads up I'm what's going on good luck on your license be cool we'll see you later.
Just a note on sea time: 360 days at sea is required for the OUPV (Six-Pack) and Master Inland credential. Master Near Coastal requires 720 days. Make sure you document enough time to qualify for the level and route you are applying for! Paid commercial sea time would be preferable as it can be supported through the vessel's log books, but the USCG will accept personal time on pleasure boats as well. The only proof required would be copies of the ownership papers if it was your own boat or having the owner sign the sea service form if the boat belonged to someone else.
Great to see a new captain taking the course. $1k is cheap! CG Testing has sketchy answers and this clues you in on WHICH answer is "CORRECT" .... according to the CG
Let me know how it works out for you. If you would like to try out uscaptainstraining.com let me know. I know there is one of our instructors in the L.A area. My Training site is uscthawaii.com Also, you need at least a 50GRT for commercial work such as dive boats etc. 25 is good for smaller sailing charters etc.
Hey James thanks for the heads up to this product. Is therr a continuing education to maintain your license after you have it or do you just pay the annual licensing fee? On a side note, I have been watching your videos almost from the start when you purchased your boat. You are doing a great job. I am out of Seattle but working on assignment in Torrance but that is coming to an end sometime soon. I wondered if you would like to get together and meet to talk about sailing of course but whatever else cones up? I will buy you dinner, bring Camille along if she's game. No stress, no worries I just wanted to make the offer. Keep up the good work my friend.
Renewal process is the same application as the original. Does not need a new first aid/cpr card but does need a physical and drug test. If you have another 360 days sea time since issue there's no test. if not they send you a take home test. There's also renewal courses available
Yes for sure, when will you be leaving LA? We are planning a meet up very soon or we can meet up with you someplace near Torrance, shoot me an email when you can jamesthesailorman@gmail.com
Ooh, just happened to see your video today and I see you are taking your test!!! All the best! I was curious as to whether you checked out any other companies. I have looked at Mariner's but my understanding is you only have a year to do and I still need more time on the water. I have looked at another company that also has useful videos on youtube and there is no expiration... Thoughts?
Hi Chrissie ! I actually took my test last night AND PASSED!!!! I took 7 tests (4) for the OUPV (1) Masters upgrade (1)sail endorsement (1) Tow endorsement. I found The Mariners Learning System to be of the very top quality and they way they have the modules set up and the learning aids they provide are the only reason I passed all of those tests the first try and I completed them all in less than 2 hours. If you still need time on the water then there is no rush to do this schooling. Time on the water will also make the lessons easier because you will have real world experience to reference in regards to the problems on paper.
