I really enjoyed this book. I got so involved in all the characters' struggles and triumphs and felt so sorry for Joshua but just knew he couldn't help himself no matter how much he wanted to at times. I had so much respect for Tabby and Graham when they chose to do the honourable thing. It must have been so difficult. What a wonderful story. Wow.
The narrator also added so much to the atmosphere with her reading talent.

A beautiful, but sad story. A lovely woman who never gave up and never allowed her awful circumstances to change her outlook on life. Thank you.

I'm half way through and my heart is just wrenching for Phillip. With an almost 4-year-old mama's boy, I cannot help but draw comparisons.

Tabbis story was so heartbreaking yet so real.
Some people just refuse to take responsibility for their own lives. I hope your story written here is not drawing on your personal experience.
My favourite scene was Philip serving fairy cakes proudly stating he was not a young footman but a boy.
Thank you for sharing and for the excellent narration.

Thank heavens that modern women have more choices to escape an addict's octopus grasp of promises on broken promises. Thanks for a excellent story

I was born in the U.K. at a time when women had very few rights. The big change happened when, in the 1970s, women began to gain rights through the changing of laws. Coupled with the availability of the contraceptive pill, women slowly began to stand tall in our own right and have control over our destinies. It wasn’t easy in the early decades. The change was slow, but the younger generation (now in their 40s) are truly beginning to reap the benefits in abundance. There is still a way to go, but at least modern women and men are co-existing, pulling together, and sharing on a more equal level. 👍

9:12 - I am loving this book - and I'm not even 10 minutes in - I think a lot has to do with the narrator - she sucked me in and the story keeps me glued here! lol
59:00 - the way this part is described - spoiler - where Tabby is standing in front of the captain's sister, needing a job, seriously broke my heart - like - I'm tearing up - and I don't think it was really meant to be so sad - but dang - I feel so much for this woman right now. The way it's written, the humiliation, the raw need for a job... I'm really liking this book a lot!
4:44:46 - The thoughtful way Tabby is written, and that all her troubles with her husband are kept inside her - just breaks my heart. The title of this book fooled me into thinking this was going to be a predictable, thoughtless, generic regency romance - but it is so far away from that. I'm so caught up in the story, it's uniqueness, and fluidity... I say bad words when ever I have to pause it! lol
OH! What an incredibly wonderful book! I loved every single bit of it! Every bit! It was so perfect! The slow unfolding of Tabby's character, and the captain's... spoilers - their slow sweet building of affection for each other.
I loved how there was always the comparison of Tabby's husband and the captain - how Tabby's husband was a "gentleman" in society's estimation, but his character was nothing close to a gentleman.
(the whole rest of this is spoilers)
I loved how Tabby fought her feelings towards the captain - and even went as far as going to look for a job away from him so that nothing happened. AND - the best thing was the realness - the believably of Tabby's husband's death... I mean, I hoped he'd die (dang that's terrible), but I did, so Tabby and the captain could be together... but there was the build up of it, by his unpaid gambling debts, the threats from the bad men - it was told perfectly - so it didn't feel manufactured, or phony... it felt convincingly plausible, solid and real.
And then the ending, so sweet - and even perfect too - how they had to wait, so her reputation was not damaged - just perfectly written! Dang! This was the best story I've listened to in such a long time - where it had a love story, and turmoil and worry, and sadness thrown in but accompanied by hope and goodness - and then a wonderful believable ending! Just everything was so so good! a 10 out of 10 - well worth the listen!
