This was kind of what I was thinking. Like I'm knee deep in chapter 2 and there have only been between 3 to 5 human or semi human characters in the entire game so far. Or at least characters that you SEE as human or semi human. What's interesting to me is that noone has ever complained about the lack of diversity in Dynasty Warriors and it's on it's like tenth game in the franchise.
To be fair Hogwarts was a bit "woke" & Stellar Blade was a game for internet pigs, so the same depravity, but the other side of the coin. I did buy Hogwarts, and enjoy it, and just bought the Wukong Monkey Game.

all of the serious reviews (non meme reviews that actually played for a while) I saw basically said it's a 6 or 7/10, nothing special. Don't judge a game by its player count, or meme reviews.
You are not the problem, but these journalists can influence some game studios who are afraid of negative press. This is why it is important to speak against them, so the media is not filled with these nonsense and skew people's judgements.
You should not even care about reviews or word of mouth....ppl told me forspoken wad a bad game, but it was great with sweet combat and a decent while predictable story... I never listen to ppl, I just wish they had more demos( this is why I bought forspoken cuz it had a demo), gamers should DEMAND all games have demos.... Fight for real problem

Starfield was very positive at first and took less than a week to get mostly to mixed reviews. Not saying the game is bad, just that early reviews are kind of BS filled with jokes and no criticism whatsoever. The player count does say more, but other top games are filled with bots at times so who knows.

True inclusivity and diversity is when an Eastern mythological character gets loved and embraced all over the world by gamers of different color and culture. Its not the tokenistic gesture of force writing a female protaganist for the sake of doing so.

The reason why this game is so big in China - I'm assuming, is because they had similar exposure to Journey to the West as kids. I'm Chinese-American, immigrant parents, busy working, etc. We put ourselves to bed when we were kids. No bedtime story or anything because my parents were always tired at the end of the day. But we listened to Journey to the West on cassette tape, we'd play one side of a tape every night while going to sleep. We did this for years. Was really excited to see a "more or less" faithful adaptation.
Audience review also often just sucks. They give everything a 6/10 or 7/10, and then I buy it and it is slop. Best is to have 1-2 reviewers who align with your tastes and somewhat trust them in their ratings.
I think this game is a sign no one takes game journalists seriously at all,all those sites were banded together against this game and it sells like crazy all the boycotts they attempt do is pump up sales. The game looked interesting from the start and thats alot more than alot of new games can say.
I don't usually play Souls like games, but I bought this just because journalists were yelling about diversity. This is a game based on a very famous Chinese novel, journey to the west, so people yelling about diversity is crazy for me. Its like you took Christianity and said that Jesus need more diversity so lets change Jesus to a woman and make it a black person, and change all the disciples to all different races just because. It doesn't work and really stupid.

@@Jonderlei Its cool that you are hearing about it, its a story that pretty much every Chinese person, also Japanese , maybe korea knows about. Lots of mythology spawn from it, creatures, deities, and various novels came after Journey to the West. It deals with lots of topics, with moral and ethics added here and there, story about brotherhood, sacrifice, and determination and what it means to be heroic. Its why Monkey King is super popular, and same name as Dragon Ball character, Dragon Ball came after just an FYI.
Did that Screen Rant reviewer even play past chapter 2? Right in Chapter 3 there is a boss called Kang Jin Star, a woman dressed in traditional Chinese dress that turns into a dragon. I haven't beaten the game yet, but I'm sure there are other female characters that aren't rock monsters.
The thing about these "criticisms" about these games such as lack of diversity, opinions on women, opinions on the rainbow flag... the thing is these people working on the game are ENTITLED to their feelings and guess what? These games and their devs DO NOT OWE anyone diversity, they don't owe you female characters, they don't owe you rainbow flag characters. All they owe you is a FUN WORKING game, ideally from Day 1.

Im really looking forward to more and more chinese game developers gaining momentum in the industry. Say what you will, but just 60 years ago, China was a mostly rural agricultural society. Here we are today, and they are a global behemoth of power, with vast amounts of influence, global trade, and prosperity. The gaming industry needs far more diversity, im looking forward to seeing new gaming studios emerge from all over the world. We need more competition in the industry. The largest gaming studios have ruined gaming in the last decade, with all the micro-transactions, unfinished games launching with massive bugs and problems, 3-4 different versions released of the same game , they are charging $120 dollars in the U.S for the complete game , this is an unsustainable business practice thats biting them in the ass. Black Myth Wukong, even with its performance issues on consoles, released as a full game from launch, I want to see more of this in the industry. The only recent title I can think of that launched as a fully finished game upon release was God of War Ragnorok.

It's not political correctness but political activism. These articles aren't bland and generic and neither are the games. There are no triple A games that are bland. They are actively aggravating people. Nor are the games generic as they put in all types of new busy work and meaningless story related task. Finally, they legally can't cookie cutter a game. Its incredible that a relatively unknown studio has disrupted the entire game industry and has shown these so called "Triple A" studios how a game is supposed to be made and most likely become Game of the Year.

A game that has mythical creatures from ancient Chinese mythology doesn't need "diversity", unless they mean diversity in monsters and other mythical creatures, which it has plenty of. The main character isn't even human. I'm not sure if the game even has any humans in it at all. I'm amazed that this even needs to be said a this point.

Sweet summer child, the entire reason these journalists still have their jobs is they are willing to write these hit pieces for their corporate masters. Why do you think these big media companies have been buying up all the smaller struggling game Journalist outlets these last four or five year? Take note of when all these nonsense inflammatory hit pieces started showing up. It's not a coincidence. The primary reason this game is getting the slander treatment by corporate game journalists is it refused to pay SBI's 8 million dollar e̶x̶t̶o̶r̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ consultation fee. Look at any of the big titles we have seen get slandered like this in the last few years. Notice how its only been the last few years for starters, but beyond that the one thing they all seem to have in common is they are games that refused to pay Sweet Baby Inc's multi-million dollar "consultation fee." To discuss 'Black Myth: Wukong' purely from the perspective of a video game is to somewhat underestimate this title. Assuming the overall score for gameplay and artistry is 80, the artistry alone would score a perfect 100. I'm not sure how many people have finished the first chapter, but the quality of the ending animation is simply outstanding.

As a male player I am highly offended by the life is strange series especially the third one because I don't feel as if the main character addressed most of my masculine life issues enough. I think the developers should have spent the time to create a male presenting character and a male centric game alongside the existing story. Even though yes it would be almost like they were creating two games but that's the price of inclusivity and the only way to appease my ego and it's need for attention. I really don't feel represented enough in those games. Yes all of what I just wrote sounds illogical irrational and insane. And I'm sure some of these sensitive journalists would agree that I sound unhinged. So maybe occasionally they should try applying some of their concepts across the board and see if they stand up to scrutiny.
The thing that sticks out to me (and I'm glad you mentioned it) is the "No women in Chapters 1 and 2". It implies that she never finished game. And she focuses on it like the first two chapters represent the entire game. She never mentioned how far she was in the game after that point. She never says something like, "Sure in chapter 5 more women showed up but..." I mean if she did the smallest amount of research before typing that she would know 2 years ago they had a trailer with women in it. This is incredibly dishonest.
Wukong looks and plays great, I just hate the lack of DEFENSE, its a bunch of rolls and rolls, couple flips and more rolls, OP bosses everywhere and Wukong hits like a bitch compared to his opps, idk about a 10/10 but its good 👍🏽
The only game reviews i trust is player steam reviews because i can see who bought the game, how much time they played and what they achieved ingame with their achievements.

@SuperZura91 I played it on PS5 last night for about 2.5 hours. The loading times are a little longer than other ps5 games (about 20 seconds). The only technical issue I had was when I walked into a waterfall to see if there might be a secret passage, my frame rate fell through the floor. As soon as I walked away it picked right back up though. And I am playing on performance mode. Other than that, the game played wonderfully. Looking forward to playing more tonight.
I really liked Elden Ring but Wukong has more complex bosses with more different abilities. I would say the game has better boss fights than Elden Ring. I wouldn't compare it directly to that game though. Rest of the Wicked also has Darksouls elements but that doesn't mean it's a rip off. The game has such a huge lore and the game conveys so much of it. I honestly want a DLC for the game. What I also like are the different monsters that act differently. In Elden Ring, many of them were repeated and here there are many more different mini enemies.
How someone can take a review site seriously after it subtracts points for lack of inclusion and diversity is beyond me. Can that site please go broke?

Excellent video and a great summary of the topic. Another thing that I find infuriating about this is that most of these sites have either disabled comments entirely or turn them off for specific articles, citing toxic commentary. But we all know there are options to remove toxic commentary without making it impossible to comment at all. For me, that is just them wanting to be able to make the wildest accusations and claims, without anyone being able to directly call them out for it.

It really is just fine on PS5 I agree. I’ve also also noticed some frame dipping with some lightning spells used by the rats. And then the only other problem I have and this problem is for the PC version too is their awful placement of invisible walls that seems so fucking random. It’s really bad. That’s such a minor nitpick in grand scheme but definitely something they need to really improve on if they make a second game.
@SolidSL510 unfortunately, on the ps5 version at least, the loading screens are just straight up black with a small progress bar on the bottom. It would be great if they added tips or button mapping to look at while we wait.
@iaqh Of course the PC is better if you have the money, but good luck building a PC for $450 with the same performance of a PS5 without resorting to buying used parts. A Radeon 6650 XT or a RTX 2070 Super (PS5 equivalent GPU) still goes for $250 to $280 by itself. A Ryzen 3700x is another $170. If you want a noticeable jump in performance you'll need to buy a Radeon 7800 XT or a RTX 4070 and pair it with a Ryzen 5800x 3D or an i7 13700k. For the money the PS5 is a great option.
I don't listen to Main Stream Review outlets, I don't listen to Main Stream RUclipsrs who get early copies or get's invited out to play games before release. It's not my kind of game, meaning it's a bit souls like. But it sure looks mint, but this isn't enough to make me go out and buy it

Tbh at this point I'm more surprised that after all the money loss, the negative reception and pretty much the Drama, that big CEO's and CFO's aren't noticing SBI is not worth investing into. I get that buisness ppl don't have any connection to their audience and only care short-term about profit; but even short-term Profit is being affected now so they should take notice; or at the very least be more curious as to what's going on. Ah well, not really a problem for us if we just ignore them; don't give them money and buy stuff we actually like and enjoy. There's a wise saying that fits here: "If we do not learn from our past, we are doomed to repeat it" which is pretty much all this woke stuff going on. When they complain about a lack of diversity, they're not talking about "Why isn't there more of X demographic", they're saying it doesn't push "THE MESSAGE".
I like it when a game journalist starts talking about diversity, inclusion or modern audiences. It communicates quickly and clearly that whatever they are writing cannot be taken seriously when one is looking for reliable information.
I remember a time when games journalists who reviewed games did so based on gameplay, graphics, story and you know the content of the game. Which... you know is their actual job. Seems to be these days the journos that work on these sites are the ones that are such terrible journalists that the only job they can get is for ScreenRant or some such when they really wanted to work for some politico shill place instead. The majority of games I play, books I read, movies and tv-shows I watch I watch to escape from reality for a moment. Sooo, the further it is removed from the "current real world" shit the better. And if said piece of media is based on a piece of literature, history or what have you, I want it to cling as closely to that source material as possible so it feels authentic. For example if a game or movie is set in the Scandinavia during the viking age(I know, so very overdone by now) I dont want 20% of all vikings to be ethnically non-norse because around a fifth of Sweden happens to be first or second gen immigrants today. It makes the setting feel inauthentic and just throws me out of my immersion. Respect for the source material and the setting is very important, it's important to keep the world believable, it's important for the people who are fans of the material, and it's important to the people who's cultural heritage is on display etc.

As a fan of the Journey to the West and a HUGE Sun Wukong fan, I was ecstatic that such a beautiful and polished game was released based on the myth and that the story will be shared to hundreds of other people who might not be familiar with it. Imagine how pissed I am that these game "journalists" are trying to shoot down the game and by proxy its wonderful story by transplanting their Western values of "DiVeRSiTy" and "InCLuSiVitY" onto an Eastern-developed game.
How are people/characters from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, India, China, Singapore, and the rest of Asia not "diverse"? Isn't it about time they just drop the veil and stop saying "diversity" and just start saying "Black", because that is seemingly the ONLY "diversity" they apparently care about.

I believe what has the journalist and others pissed at Black Myth is that they may actually be the first video game since the days of PS2/3 that actually feels like we are just playing a fun game like we used to. I’ve been playing Black Myth the last couple days & something about it gives me vibes like I’m back in 2003 playing Ninja Gaiden or Tenchu. No forced narratives… no modern conflicting view points. No force fed inclusivity. Just a great story within a great game. I legit felt like Ive been playing OG Spyro or Sly Cooper & I mean that in the best way. I remember a time where games used to just be fun. I never cared if I looked like or could relate to the character when I played Spyro the Dragon, or Splinter Cell, Perfect Dark & The Bouncer. Gone are the days of no social media to ruin them for you through spoilers or poor reviews. They were just good games back then & they were fun. In today’s gaming industry…it’s as if these people WANT games to be bad. Even as consumers we get pressured into what we’re supposed to like & not like. Look at what happened with Hogwarts! Black Myth WuKong IMO is going to be one of the most renown & remembered games of this current era. And all they did was make a fun game. I put Black Myth WuKong as one of the TOP games to release in the last 4/5years right next to Elden Ring for its own reasons 💯

This was kind of what I was thinking. Like I'm knee deep in chapter 2 and there have only been between 3 to 5 human or semi human characters in the entire game so far. Or at least characters that you SEE as human or semi human. What's interesting to me is that noone has ever complained about the lack of diversity in Dynasty Warriors and it's on it's like tenth game in the franchise.

Starfield was very positive at first and took less than a week to get mostly to mixed reviews.
Not saying the game is bad, just that early reviews are kind of BS filled with jokes and no criticism whatsoever.
The player count does say more, but other top games are filled with bots at times so who knows.

The reason why this game is so big in China - I'm assuming, is because they had similar exposure to Journey to the West as kids. I'm Chinese-American, immigrant parents, busy working, etc. We put ourselves to bed when we were kids. No bedtime story or anything because my parents were always tired at the end of the day. But we listened to Journey to the West on cassette tape, we'd play one side of a tape every night while going to sleep. We did this for years. Was really excited to see a "more or less" faithful adaptation.

Lots of mythology spawn from it, creatures, deities, and various novels came after Journey to the West. It deals with lots of topics, with moral and ethics added here and there, story about brotherhood, sacrifice, and determination and what it means to be heroic. Its why Monkey King is super popular, and same name as Dragon Ball character, Dragon Ball came after just an FYI.

Did that Screen Rant reviewer even play past chapter 2? Right in Chapter 3 there is a boss called Kang Jin Star, a woman dressed in traditional Chinese dress that turns into a dragon. I haven't beaten the game yet, but I'm sure there are other female characters that aren't rock monsters.
The thing about these "criticisms" about these games such as lack of diversity, opinions on women, opinions on the rainbow flag... the thing is these people working on the game are ENTITLED to their feelings and guess what? Im really looking forward to more and more chinese game developers gaining momentum in the industry. Say what you will, but just 60 years ago, China was a mostly rural agricultural society. Here we are today, and they are a global behemoth of power, with vast amounts of influence, global trade, and prosperity. The largest gaming studios have ruined gaming in the last decade, with all the micro-transactions, unfinished games launching with massive bugs and problems, 3-4 different versions released of the same game , they are charging $120 dollars in the U.S for the complete game , this is an unsustainable business practice thats biting them in the ass. Black Myth Wukong, even with its performance issues on consoles, released as a full game from launch, I want to see more of this in the industry. The only recent title I can think of that launched as a fully finished game upon release was God of War Ragnorok.

Its incredible that a relatively unknown studio has disrupted the entire game industry and has shown these so called "Triple A" studios how a game is supposed to be made and most likely become Game of the Year.
GotY for 2024 will either be Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree or Black Myth Wukong or Stellar Blade.

A game that has mythical creatures from ancient Chinese mythology doesn't need "diversity", unless they mean diversity in monsters and other mythical creatures, which it has plenty of. The main character isn't even human. I'm not sure if the game even has any humans in it at all. I'm amazed that this even needs to be said a this point.

Assuming the overall score for gameplay and artistry is 80, the artistry alone would score a perfect 100.
I'm not sure how many people have finished the first chapter, but the quality of the ending animation is simply outstanding.

As a male player I am highly offended by the life is strange series especially the third one because I don't feel as if the main character addressed most of my masculine life issues enough.
I think the developers should have spent the time to create a male presenting character and a male centric game alongside the existing story.
Even though yes it would be almost like they were creating two games but that's the price of inclusivity and the only way to appease my ego and it's need for attention.

The thing that sticks out to me (and I'm glad you mentioned it) is the "No women in Chapters 1 and 2". It implies that she never finished game. And she focuses on it like the first two chapters represent the entire game. She never mentioned how far she was in the game after that point. She never says something like, "Sure in chapter 5 more women showed up but..." I mean if she did the smallest amount of research before typing that she would know 2 years ago they had a trailer with women in it. This is incredibly dishonest.

The only technical issue I had was when I walked into a waterfall to see if there might be a secret passage, my frame rate fell through the floor. As soon as I walked away it picked right back up though. And I am playing on performance mode. Other than that, the game played wonderfully. Looking forward to playing more tonight.
I really liked Elden Ring but Wukong has more complex bosses with more different abilities. I would say the game has better boss fights than Elden Ring. I wouldn't compare it directly to that game though. Rest of the Wicked also has Darksouls elements but that doesn't mean it's a rip off.
The game has such a huge lore and the game conveys so much of it. I honestly want a DLC for the game. What I also like are the different monsters that act differently. In Elden Ring, many of them were repeated and here there are many more different mini enemies.

It really is just fine on PS5 I agree. I’ve also also noticed some frame dipping with some lightning spells used by the rats.
And then the only other problem I have and this problem is for the PC version too is their awful placement of invisible walls that seems so fucking random. It’s really bad.
That’s such a minor nitpick in grand scheme but definitely something they need to really improve on if they make a second game.

@SolidSL510 unfortunately, on the ps5 version at least, the loading screens are just straight up black with a small progress bar on the bottom. It would be great if they added tips or button mapping to look at while we wait.

@iaqh Of course the PC is better if you have the money, but good luck building a PC for $450 with the same performance of a PS5 without resorting to buying used parts. A Radeon 6650 XT or a RTX 2070 Super (PS5 equivalent GPU) still goes for $250 to $280 by itself. A Ryzen 3700x is another $170. If you want a noticeable jump in performance you'll need to buy a Radeon 7800 XT or a RTX 4070 and pair it with a Ryzen 5800x 3D or an i7 13700k. For the money the PS5 is a great option.
I don't listen to Main Stream Review outlets, I don't listen to Main Stream RUclipsrs who get early copies or get's invited out to play games before release. It's not my kind of game, meaning it's a bit souls like. But it sure looks mint, but this isn't enough to make me go out and buy it

I like it when a game journalist starts talking about diversity, inclusion or modern audiences. It communicates quickly and clearly that whatever they are writing cannot be taken seriously when one is looking for reliable information.
I remember a time when games journalists who reviewed games did so based on gameplay, graphics, story and you know the content of the game. Which... you know is their actual job.
Seems to be these days the journos that work on these sites are the ones that are such terrible journalists that the only job they can get is for ScreenRant or some such when they really wanted to work for some politico shill place instead.
The majority of games I play, books I read, movies and tv-shows I watch I watch to escape from reality for a moment. Sooo, the further it is removed from the "current real world" shit the better.
And if said piece of media is based on a piece of literature, history or what have you, I want it to cling as closely to that source material as possible so it feels authentic.
For example if a game or movie is set in the Scandinavia during the viking age(I know, so very overdone by now) I dont want 20% of all vikings to be ethnically non-norse because around a fifth of Sweden happens to be first or second gen immigrants today. It makes the setting feel inauthentic and just throws me out of my immersion.
Respect for the source material and the setting is very important, it's important to keep the world believable, it's important for the people who are fans of the material, and it's important to the people who's cultural heritage is on display etc.

As a fan of the Journey to the West and a HUGE Sun Wukong fan, I was ecstatic that such a beautiful and polished game was released based on the myth and that the story will be shared to hundreds of other people who might not be familiar with it. Imagine how pissed I am that these game "journalists" are trying to shoot down the game and by proxy its wonderful story by transplanting their Western values of "DiVeRSiTy" and "InCLuSiVitY" onto an Eastern-developed game.

I believe what has the journalist and others pissed at Black Myth is that they may actually be the first video game since the days of PS2/3 that actually feels like we are just playing a fun game like we used to. I’ve been playing Black Myth the last couple days & something about it gives me vibes like I’m back in 2003 playing Ninja Gaiden or Tenchu. No forced narratives… no modern conflicting view points. No force fed inclusivity. Just a great story within a great game.
I legit felt like Ive been playing OG Spyro or Sly Cooper & I mean that in the best way. I remember a time where games used to just be fun. I never cared if I looked like or could relate to the character when I played Spyro the Dragon, or Splinter Cell, Perfect Dark & The Bouncer. Gone are the days of no social media to ruin them for you through spoilers or poor reviews. They were just good games back then & they were fun.
