If black myth Wukong’s success and concords failure happening at the SAME EXACT TIME isn’t the clearest wake up call to game developers, then I’m afraid nothing can make them learn.
Either you waste energy waking up the old ones, or you appreciate new blood. There are many stories out there showing veteran devs leaving rotten companies to start new studios. If there is money to be made, then we just need to keep our eyes open. On that note, now is probably the best time to bring one's ideas to the table, now that it's pretty much confirmed that the market void is there.
Yes, we keep winning and this fake controversy stuff is getting old. We've gotten a continuous flow of good games but every single time people are like "this is a wakeup call!". Stop it. Baldur's Gate 3, Helldivers 2, Palworld, Hogwarts Legacy, Black Myth Wukong, and like a dozen others I'm forgetting just in the recent past. All with people trying to farm that same tagline. Selling the idea of a sick industry so they can sell you their commentary on it pretending like they are some subversive underdog for being as mainstream as it gets.
Black Myth Wu Kong’s dev team took 6 years of time scanning over 100 ancient Chinese monuments and loading them into U5. That is why the buildings took real… because it is.
@@Clarkeyrules1i mean... you need to find them, choose them, gather a team, gather funds, get permission, scan them, model them into the game, make sure they dont jave any bugs, and optimize them for a hella big game. It does take a while, maybe not loterally 6 full years but when its a whole game youre making you cant imvest 100% of your time into scanning..
@@kitther they could have been all over the world, it still doesn’t take 6 years. I’m just critiquing the verbiage. “They scanned over a 100 buildings over a 6 year period” is more accurate.
Sales, reaction videos, twitch viewers, etc, this game brought a lot of things to life, i haven't seen that in a while, it's sad what the gaming industry has turned into.
Let’s not forget, an already dead game in Concord got a 7/10 from IGN while BM Wukong, the most concurrently played single player game in steam history, got an 8/10….
wukong deserve a 7-7.5 cuz bad fighting mechanics (button smashing at its finest) no voice acting for main character (which is wild knowing how far they couldve done the voice acting of a character like wukong) and IMO bad story... story telling? amazing but story in itself? where's the main vilain? i was expecting way less on some aspect but MUCH MORE on others...... concord deserved a 0.. if i could go lower i would
32:08 , this is absolutely true. If a game was made by Africans and all the characters were black, those people would never say that the game lacks diversity.
Fair price, good experience, no loot boxes, it's a finished game without any future DLC to know the "full story", and it has a great gameplay. It's how games were always designed to be like, it's normal. But now, it's mind-blowing. Sad.
@@RIP_ZYZZ1738 I can't speak for him, but what I think he means is that the entire story exists in just the base game. And you don't need extra DLC to experience the full story. DLC is meant to be extra story, not part of the main story. So you're not, essentially, paying 60 bucks to play 80% of a story and need to pay 40 bucks to play the last 20% of a story.
As an Asian that grew up with a lot of Western media and Western mythology, it is extremely stupid to say that this game isn't inclusivity. This is Eastern mythology on the biggest stage, and I for one who loves and enjoyed the Journey of the West story, I appreciate this game for its ambition
It isn’t inclusivity they really want, they want to spoon-fed you their version of inclusivity, and when it organically happens outside of their hands they don’t like it. So they oppress it, which shows them publicly for who they really are. It isn’t about enriching and sharing of global cultures, its about control and power. It’s fascistic hypocrisy. “You can do it your own way, if its done just how we say.” Or “you can have a difference of opinion so long as it’s the same as ours”. This game looks dope, i plan on playing it. The design work is beautiful and it is so unique from everything else out there because it’s intent isn’t to be formulaic, assembly-line schlock.
THIS is diversity. Letting a culture be itself and us learning about it, appreciating it, and celebrating it. Not washing it out into the grey landscape western journal wants.
As someone who has a family and only an hour or 2 to play a night if that. I just finished chapter 2. That cut scene was amazingly well done. Same for chapter 1s cut scene. I love this game. It feels like I'm playing something that was made with love, care and actual craftsmanship. It feels more like an experience than a game.
Hell yeah. I just reached chapter 6 which feels like the last one. Its honestly a fun time, even when i rage at a boss dying 30 times. It really does feel like a labor of love.
@@jabronirigatoni4648 oh boy enjoy chapter 6 :))) look around the big area carefully before u miss something :)) I hope u got the secret areas to in the chapters they where absolutly amazing 🙌
I see this as racism. If Black Panther, a movie that mostly consist of black people and African tribe culture contribute towards diversity, then why a story focusing on Asian mythology and asthetics does not? The only reason it's criticized is because it's not made within the US like Shang-qi, and apparently cultural diversity outside the US is not diversity.
It's also most likely due to America's ongoing trade war with China. But, yeah, this country does have long history of rampant racism, and hates to admit it.
@@Ilestun And don't forget women's rights. Collectively together, I call these three categories (racial minorities, women, the LGBT community) The Big Three. This is the exact reason why I myself (98% African-American and 2% Native-American, whilst also being on SSDI, Medicare and Medicaid for autism, ADHD, Developmental Coordination Disorder and Clinical Depression) have had my civil rights as a neurodiverse individual violated time and again. The civil rights of The Big Three are the only civil rights that get identified and protected time and again in this country. When if you were to look up the actual definition of the words "civil rights" in the dictionary, these two words pertain to baseline human rights intended for EVERYONE - white, black, Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin, Indian, men, women, straight, LGBT, rich, poor, etc.
Understand that when Western "Journalists" or game journalists say "diversity", what they really mean is women, gays, trannies, and blacks. Which yes is racist in and of itself. Long as whatever product has some combination of those, it's "diverse". So of course a Chinese mythology game about a destined monkey taking on dog, rat, tiger, insect, or snake people (or even tiger-snake people, see chapter 4) with a pig companion isn't diverse to them. So, they have to destroy it, they have to create backlash against it. Except that backfired (same with Stellar Blade) so now they seethe and cry, which is a glorious addition to an already great game.
As a gamer from Beijing, as far as I know, gamers in China actually are aware of what's happening with IGN, and the general consensus is most people from the Gobal North, mostly western countries, are getting delusional and petty, they won't tolerate any challenger to their gaming industry that is from a 'lesser' country, so don't be suprised if Black Myth: Wukong isn't nomiated for GOTY. To me, as someone spent almost 10 years in the US, this whole event made me realize that it doesn't matter how great I can be, I will always be treated as "someone from China", and to most Americans, everything I do right is because I was educated in the US, every mistake I make "makes sense" to them by default, and I don't expect this situation will change any time soon.
We're not all racist brother. Some of us have love and respect for all of the cultures and civilizations in the world, and China is one of the greatest civilizations of our Era. Chinese people are like all people, but you should be proud of the ingenuity and work ethic your country is well - known for. There seems to be a driving push to force people into division and strife. Forget about the internet and make your own judgment based on personal interactions in real life. When you take a real interest in another human being and another culture they tend to take interest in you and yours. We are all at different levels of development and not everyone is there, but we are all one and you belong.
@@andrerodon3921 Thank you for the kind words, I do meet many great people when in the US, but that doesn’t change the fact that the current US government spent 1.6 billion on demonizing my home country, I can only wish the good people like you will be in charge of the government in the future
Go cry about Americans some more, surely that'll help your disposition. Are you serious? It's a video game. Relax. It did extremely well, it's goal was to sell copies. It succeeded. Taking this to be more than that is just sad. Look at how good Space Marine 2 is and IGN trashed it too. So WHAT? Those are failing rags from a by-gone era. Nobody cares in the US what they think. They are the butt of jokes. 7/10 from IGN is a meme for a reason. Kotaku as well. You taking this to a racial place is unacceptable. If you want to be racist that's your prerogative. I also think that Palworld talking positively about Black Myth: Wukong and praising them, was a great move and a refreshing wave of positivity from the dev space.
What I love so much about Wukong is that every second of every minute Im playing this game, I feel like I am playing a tall tale from a bard, but instead of being sung to I am the tale that the bard sings. I play as a monkey fighting a frog in a pond like arena, I challenge 5 giants and a 3 eyed deity to a duel, I turned into a bug to sneak past wolf spirits in the forest. It just feels so whimiscal and unique like nothing i've played before.
They call them "white adjacent" to excuse racism, but yes, preaching diversity and inclusion while trashing others cultures is not a good view (AC shadows and now BM wukong)
RDR2 is a wake up calls Elden Ring is a wake up calls BG3 is a wake up calls BMW is a wake up calls. I think they need some bank-rupt to truely wake up.
You did not just use BMW us an acronym for a Chinese game. That’s just flat out disrespectful to one of the greatest German engineering firms of the 20th century
To me, a Chinese player in China 36 years old who understands the meaning of “journey to the west”, do you think I care about what those journalists saying? Sorry I like this game and I love to pay for it, the most important thing to me is nowadays so many fucking games just trying to rip me off from different in-app purchase transactions or other things rather than please, telling a good story in a good way. If I got time I can explain more but in short: who is the destined one? Everyone who with unsatisfactory with now, but eager for the future, means every one of us.
I’m from China, I can confirm that people in China do not like ai generate games, one of the biggest selling point of black myth wukong is every location is hand modelled, where the developer actual visited the original location, and made the scene them self, every single sculpture, you can find the origin version, which is built exactly the same. In the contrast, ubi is massively using ai generated rubbish in assassin creed shadow.
@ ass creed shadow, all the building is used wrong, Chinese building in to Japanese, wrong type of tree, one piece sword, those surely not created by human. Think, if human want to use one piece sword in to game, he definitely know this is illegal, then how we have all above happend? AI
I am not Chinese nor I ever played any Souls/Ring/Borne game. But I stepped on Wukong hype and I am rocking solid 40 hours so far. They said it is a 50hr game, well.. Not for me but I am digging every minute :D Atm at the end of Chapter 2.
Well i had close to 50hours on my first playthrough and to my surprise i did pretty good with exploring and such (ofc i missed some things here and there) but i will cover them on my next playthroughs 😂😂
It may be at least for sony. Not the activist devs. It's so bad that Sony again is shutting through fucking game down and issuing refunds. Like holy shit when was the last time that's happened?
Unless the development team fabricated or rigged play testing isn't this really a Sony upper management failure? How does leadership manage a 100 million asset and not realize till the end that the foundation is made of cheese and no one wants to play it

I love that Wukong's success goes against everything what EA has been yapping about, single player games with no MTX are no longer profitable. Fuck you, good games are always profitable, no matter if it's single player or online.
during the time it took to make this game ea made 2 billion from utlimate team stop dreaming gamers do not reject microtransactions UBI soft made 1 billion on ac valhalla and 40% was micro
@@johansvensson833 I didn't say those game isn't profitable, it's that single player games with no MTX isn't profitable, by their words. And they're wrong.
It’s not that single player games aren’t profitable, it’s just that they only profit once per gamer. Maybe twice with DLC. Whereas with a live service, they can charge season passes twice a year, skins, weapons, DLC, cosmetics, in-game currency, online subscriptions, etc. EA, and studios like them, want to essentially change the standard from single player, no nonsense, games to live service multiplayer slop that drains your wallet.
What they want to do is have a system they can throw money into and get more money out. They don't want to take a risk trying to make every project good and maybe taking a loss ehen they get it wrong. Exploiting whale, selling subscriptions, and drip feeding content is more reliable. That's what they mean when they say "profitable."
As someone in the game industry, I have to say one of the reasons black myth succeeded is their design choice and cost control. UE5 (Nanite+Lumen) + model scan enabled next-gen environment art pipeline for photorealistic game and Game Science ran through it and delivered a great end product. Motion matching + motion capture enables fluid character movement given they have no animation library. They chose not to build mechanics or structural complex levels, rather they made tons of bosses to focus on battle dynamics. Lacking any of these choices (added other advantages) they cannot finish the game on time or meet the quality they promised. They are truly talented and passionate developers who have lifelong dream and experience to make a Journey to the West game.
BMW is the most visually epic things I've ever seen. The way it brings mythology into the reality of the game space is beyond what i imagined was possible. It. Is. Insane.
As a Chinese, I want to add some information. 🤔The controversy over Black Myth Wukong on the Chinese Internet was much earlier than the IGN article. Do you think those remarks made by the creators of Game Science more than a decade ago were found by IGN editors? That was the masterpiece of Chinese radical feminists. IGN only did some sorting and translation (re-creation) work. To this day, content creators who have a female fanbase will avoid making Wukong content, otherwise they will lose fans. Therefore, China has never been a pure land of anti-woke. The global situation is equally precarious. I think what we can do is to support games like BMW.
I play videogames to get away from politics and the vast majority of players do to. This loud group of feminist activists is really too small to move the industry because most women are not consumers and players for AAA games or action RPG.
Just to add to that ,some of these extremist groups are funded by, the 3 letter agency ( you know who). Not saying all of them, but some of them. Same as some animal lover extremist groups, etc. The infamous NGOs funded by the 3 letter agency around the world. These will turn into a weak point within a society, when it’s needed.
Dude, it’s not black and white. Do some comments (including some official company recruiting posts!! If you haven’t seen them) from core members of game science offend me as a female video game player and a feminist? Yes. There is clearly some misogynist culture at least early on within the gs team. Do I think bmw is a freaking awesome game? Yes. I pre-ordered it on my ps5 and really enjoy the game play and hope it will at least be nominated as game of the year. In an idea world, I personally would not want them to change any of the game (add more diverse characters bs) but really reflect on their previous comments and issue official public apologies.
as a polish person i would sue any jounralist who would say that the majority of players for the Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk are polish- that's actually a xenophobic remark from those who accuse us of being -ists and -fobes. I might not agree with policies of a certain government(chinese, russian or even american) but if their citizens produce a product i like - i will be interested in that product.
The fact that you fight "yourself" and he just straight up mocks the shit out of you, catching your heavy attacks, stealing your bamboo stick and throwing it back to you, stealing your healing gourd, emptying it, and giving it back, that fight was so much fun, the creativity, off the fking charts. 100/10 would buy 10 times over.
South Korea and Japan care because they are colonies of the United States, have troops stationed there, and are politically and economically aligned with the United States. Only China can ignore US ideology.
Black Myth was the right game at the right time. A time full of broken premises, Day 1 DLC's, excessive monetisation. Like BG3. They came and they delivered. For them it was like feeding a very hungry community.
You konw what, as a Chinese, I'd like to bring an important political context in this conversation: Why Chinese people don’t seem to care about or participate in today’s politically correct discussions is because we once had far-left social movements, which are way more left than the so-called "politic correct" in the United States today. During many far-left social movements (including the Cultural Revolution), we forced all classes of people who disagreed with equality and those who created inequality to apologize, made all capitalists unable to hold their heads high (and killed couple millions), and made everyone seem Averaged the moral level and wealth level. But this has indeed caused a great humanitarian disaster. Families are falling apart, and everyone is in danger of being afraid of saying anything wrong. Even CCP adimt these social movements are mistakes(which is really hard for them) I just want Americans know we've been through all that. I know American is "culturally" a new country, and it will reform during these all movements. But Chinese people know this will only lead to the bad ending, and it's also the reason why most Chinese people nowadays are practical then ever in our history. ;)
"Core gameplay loop" I've been screaming this into the wind for a long time. Take the 1-2 things your players spend 90% of their time doing and make sure THAT IS FUN. This game has simple controls, but deep combat. It has invisible walls / linear pathing but has great performance, tons of bosses, fantastic art and animations. The UI is minimalistic. The voice acting is fantastic. There isn't a "grind". I've said it elsewhere.... its a modern retelling of old school beat-em-ups. Its fantastic.
I was 15 minutes in and thinking that the overall feel, pace, and linearity was more like an arcade beat-em-up (TMNT came to mind) than a Souls game, and it works great.

Mao Zedong once wrote in a poem: "Today we cheer for Sun Wukong, only because the demonic mist has returned once again." The meaning is that people cheer for Sun Wukong because yaoguais (monsters) have reappeared. Elden Ring, Wukong, Stellar Blade, BG3, Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 (after all the bugs were patched) all great single player games that were successful. This shows they don’t care about success, just how much money they can milk from players, and it’s a lot easier to do that in a live service multiplayer game that mimics the mobile game formulas, which are designed to keep people addicted, not engaged, addicted
When a company says their game is a AAA product, it is not saying it is a good product, it is saying it is a safe investment that will sell enough to make investors good money.

It's not even quantity, they're spending 8 years on certifiable trash. That long and the game is incomplete, buggy, and plays like shit. Western devs working for corpos are just trash at worse, and overworked/not given enough time everywhere else.
Ehh I'm living in China and that's not true at all. I have a friend that works at a company and it just shits out crappy games on a weekly basis. It's not so much different over there. Wukong and MiHoYo games gets attention because they're the outliers.
Profitability over everything else, if they could make one single game that keeps milking you money they would rather do that. Why do you think they want to do more than they need to take money from you? So no quantity, no quality, just profits

I simply adore how EACH and EVERY character (including each enemy) has their own unique moveset (well, maybe except the Archers but...that's just Archery). There are a lot of them in each chapter and (I'm at Chapter 4 at the moment) I have not seen ONE repeated attack or move yet, even between the Wolves and Rats (which are built a little similar). I’ve completed "Black Myth: Wukong," and it far exceeded my expectations. The incredible animations and music make it almost like a piece of art. It’s likely that we won’t come across a similar game for a long time, so we can only place our hopes on some innovative and independent game development teams.
Technically, PlayerUnknown is Irish (his name is Brendan Greene). He made the PlayerUnknown’s Battle Royale as an Arma 3 mod. One thing led to another, and he was hired by a Republic of Korea game company, Krafton, to develop the PUBG we know today.
PUBG was the 4th BR title of Brendan Greene aka PlayerUnknown from Ireland. His first one and also the very first BR ever existed was ARMA 2 DayZ Mod Battle Royal. The second one of him was, who would have guessed ARMA 3 Battle Royal. The third one was his first big title. It was H1Z1 in partnership with a pseudo Sony spin off company called Daybreak Game. And his final one where all of his experience went inside was PUBG, he was for quiet a while on the hunt for a fitting partner and studio. Which could 1st conquer the project and 2nd also provide the Dollars and that was BlueHole from Korea. That was all out of my head, did not bother to research because till H1Z1 I whitnessed everything Live and I even played several rounds with Brendan at ARMA 2 BR :-)
I am starting to feel like that the main reason why people LOVE FromSoftware games is because how well and how simple they are. They are just games which if you launch, you just play, you don't have to create any accounts, no battle pass, no microtransactions, no skin DLCs, no useless cutscenes and stupid stuff like that, they are just great "simple" games. That is also why Lies of P is such an amazing game even though it's pretty much their first big game, it's because Lies of P is pretty much identical to FromSoft games, you just click play and you play. Even though Wukong isn't a souls-like, if the devs didn't say that it's not a souls-like, I am sure that like 80% of players would describe it as souls-like because it has so much in common and guess what... it's a great game as well, most likely because they also took a big inspiration from FromSoft games.
I think what made FromSoftware games great is that they have a deep mastery over game design, they stick with the same game loop but every iterations always fits so well. It's so good that it become a genre defining game; letting every other gamedev know that the gameloop works, you can just modify the content.
At the same time, Wukong does do its own thing to differentiate it from FromSoft's storytelling style. Seeing all the different animation styles for the storytelling cutscenes is quite amazing, and along with the music really shows how much love the devs put into the game.
Also great variety of weapons, spells, movesets and builds. Also silent protagonist who doesn't blabber all the time what you have to do. Compare it to upcoming star wars: outlaws. Just pew pew and stealth.
People just want to be go on an epic journey where they experience highs and lows in both the storytelling, and their struggle in the game itself to overcome whatever stands in your way. Pretty simple.
Everyone in China knows about the controversy. Chinese are extremely well informed about Western media with countless social media translating everything written in the West (not so the other way around)

just going to throw this out there but, who cares if it completely cut out women, black people, and white people. This is a CHINESE MYTHOLOGY. Not Greek, European, American, African, but CHINESE. I'd imagine that Koreans and Japanese may have their own historical culture of Sun Wukong as people often migrated during wars, spreading culture. BUT ultimately this is an oriental tale about oriental people. WHY WOULD others be included. This would be like making a game about Oda Nobunaga and then portraying him as a girl to feel inclusive to genders. ITS NOT WHAT HAPPENED
appreciate bro. Western developers can never understand how hard it is to make a triple A game in China and how hard Game Science tried to achieve this game. There are many restrictions in China and the fact is they spend 2 years to convince investors and the government to allow them just do it. 7 people for the first 2 years then grew up to 36 ppl and finally found 130 only to finish this phenomenon game. That's why many Chinese love it and believe it's not the final game but the beginning of the Chinese AAA era

In fact, tracing back to the source, Sun Wukong did not originate from Buddhism. His master was the ancestor of Chinese Taoism, and the entire Havoc in Heaven is about him fighting Taoist gods, Erlang Shen, and Nezha, all come from earlier myths:封神演义(The name cannot be translated into English, Probably explained as the battle of gods.) After Sun Wukong failed in his attempt to cause trouble in Heaven, he was punished by the Buddhist leader and was imprisoned under a mountain for 500 years. Then, Buddhism arranged for him to protect Jin Chanzi's reincarnation and go to the West to obtain Buddhist scriptures. The purpose of the game, the second ending, is to break free from the shackles of Heaven and Buddhism. In the hearts of Chinese people, Sun Wukong is a symbol of freedom, indomitable spirit, and the courage to face difficulties. This is why Sun Wukong became so popular. The game company used games, cutscenes (including shadow puppetry, landscape painting, stop-motion animation), and music to show us the Sun Wukong that Chinese people imagined when they were young. The greater charm of this game is that most of the statues and temples in the game scenes can be found in real life in China. This is the inheritance of China's 5,000-year-old culture. In addition, after the cutscene, the interpretation of the narration, the style and exquisiteness of the paintings can be referred to the Dunhuang murals. And the Chinese characters that players see are all rubbings from cultural relics and paintings that have been unearthed or preserved over the past 5,000 years. Finally, I would like to add that the Chinese system of gods and immortals will scare you. There are thousands of orthodox gods and immortals alone, and these are only the official gods and immortals appointed by the Heavenly Court.
@@georgevan2606 There are many interpretations of Journey to the West, as it is one of the four great classics of China. The root of this myth should be the struggle for belief between Buddhism and Taoism, which is equivalent to the redistribution of interests in our modern times.

The only thing I am having trouble asserting is how much of the American media criticism towards this game is 'wokeness' and how much it's geopolitics. Because if it's geopolitics, I hope gamers realize this anything China-related smearing nonsense goes way beyond IGN and Otaku, and it's a lot more insidious and subtle than one might think. I moved from NYC to HK around 2018 so a year after I got to live through all the anti-government nonsense that took place in 2019. I was disgusted at how biased the Western media was and how much they omitted or twisted facts, painting this Umbrella movement people as some sort of heroes. Again, I was not naive but I was still shocked at how shameless and right down liars these news networks are. And don't get me started about this NGO's that are supposed to 'protect the oppressed'
Western mass media are glorified propaganda outlets. They all work directly with the US state dept to push talking points. The modern Western "journalist" is little more than pencil pushers and stenographers.
I think geopolitics is using the genuine wokeness to split America and keep a certain growing population feeling favourable about China for not being cringe.
Identifying the CCP as a government borne in blood and perpetuated by stepping on the faces of its own people is different from smearing the people and businesses of China, who really don't deserve that. Apparently western media can't tell the difference.
The problem a lot of western games studios have is that they really do think they can do it better, whilst they stand on the shoulders of giants they mistake it for looking down on them. History becomes a skin they wrap around ideas, scratch the surface and you find out how shallow it is. Assassins creed respects the cultures it bases itself in about as much as a thief respects a door, and this plays well until they touch something people actually care about, but in hindsight all of the games were truly vapid cultural vandalism masquerading as deep storytelling, but they did have some fun gameplay. Witcher probably did it best, but lacked the scale that this game has, obviously someone in China really wanted this game to be massive and they pumped a lot of heart, time and money into it. Wukong really is a game based in a culture and history, even the things that are just background are drawn from it in a coherent and honest way and it all fits together so well, and because they aren't ashamed of the past and constantly trying to one up their ancestors they can simply use their words as dialogue and it works very well. They have pulled off using thousands of years of myth and storytelling in a game, and the quality and depth of everything is far beyond what would be possible if you wanted to rewrite every anecdote to somehow adhere to the modern truth regime. In ways this does hurt the narrative of the game because it is truly difficult to be sure that what you think is what was intended, and not being Chinese makes this all the more confusing as I'm sure Chinese people also miss the nuances of western myths all the time, but at the same time, this is part of its charm. Unfortunately there will be no wakeup call, because the people with their number actively hate you, and I'm not being hyperbolic. Realistically it is us who should have received the wakeup call when they made the 10th game where the protagonist, who is an ugly woman or of mysterious ethnic origin, is beset by mediocre and pathetic white male allies and evil white male enemies. Or the complete desecration of Tolkien's works, where people who obviously have no intention of respecting the spirit of the work attempt to convince you that you are the one that is wrong, they are unironically like demons attempting to convince you of things that are obviously false, but they are adept at wrapping their deceit in truth and twisting words to confuse you.
Very well said. In terms of the nuances of the western myths, yes some Chinese players didn’t care as much and only played the games for fun, but there are also lots of them that got interested in western myths and started looking into them in more details, just to understand the nuances better. I’m sure the same would happen in wukong’s case, although the scale is yet to be confirmed.
You are correct in most of what you say, except Witcher lacking scale? It is, until now, the best RPG I have ever played in many, many aspects. And it is HUGE in scale, also having received the success it deserved. Sure, it didn't have the amount of concurrent players Black Myth has, but it did still sell over 50 million copies. For a relatively unknown studio at the time of the release, it is an INSANE success.
@@tihonannenkov4114 I don't mean scale in the sense of people playing it, nobody could play it and it would still have more, I was referring to cultural scale. And I didn't mean Witcher was small, I just meant it had less than Wukong. Wukong damn near made a movie, a book and a game, it resurrected a myth and seems to be making Chinese people crazy with pride. As good as Witcher was, it wasn't that, and I don't mean that as some sort of slight against the Polish.
@@sukablat5938 I would say it is debatable. Poland has 40 times less population than China and Witcher 3 basically made millions of people aware of Slavic mythology and could be the thing that made them aware of this country in the first place. 1,5 times more people bought the Witcher 3 than the ENTIRE Polish population (50 millions of copies sold, the whole population of Poland is 36 million). That would be equivalent to 2 billion people buying Wukong, which would be more than 25% of the entire world's population. And the Witcher 3 is absolutely a source for national pride for the Polish people. Before, most people in the world knew zero cultural works of any kind from Poland, be it art, video games or music. Now, most of the gaming community knows about TW3 and C2077 and in the broader public even more people saw The Witcher series and animation. I would say, in absolute terms, TW3 is more meaningful to Poland than Wukong is to China. CDPR's new engine was literally funded by the Polish government, this is how much of importance they have there.
There was a statement jn a film a few years ago (i cannot remember the film unfortunately, but the quote stuck with me) Paraphrased it went like this: "you make the popular film so that you can fund the artsy passion project" This is very apropo in gaming.....make a gacha style game to generate ongoing recurring revenue, use the funds generated by that to make a high fidelity, single player game with a highly engaging story etc. As asmon said "everyone wants to be fortnite, but there is omly enough space for such games"
57:26 100% Helldivers did this super hard. Had a German, a Russian, A Black American, and some French dude. A many a warcrime memes were made, and a lot of flamethrowers were used lol. Unfortunately, helldivers has no guillotines, but it has plenty of traitorous speak and uh... not so friendly fire as a response to the discovery.
@@ElhajMahmoud So stop reading them and play the games you want? It literally has no effect on you, unless you're sensitive to random journalists calling you random isms.
Yeah but they’re trying to farm dopamine as long as they can. I’ve always said this and I think it’s unfortunately true: Making games good and with love is a bad business decision. The truth is, you’re not gonna always make games like Wukong and Elden Ring. These guys that have no idea what makes a good game just see an inconsistent flow of money. There’s no “changing” their minds because that implies they understand games at a base level. Do you really think they’re making bad business decisions on purpose?
Another situation is that many players have learned that it is cheaper to buy games on the STEAM platform in China, so many overseas players will switch to using Chinese STEAM accounts to buy this game.
Chinese developer requirements: Base this game on it's own merit. Good or bad. Western gaming journalist: This game is garbage because it hinders my freedom of speech to talk about everything but the game.
Before I start watching, all I’m going to say is that is one of the GOAT’S. I’m pretty sure I’m on the final boss and the feels that you get in chapter 6 is just astonishing. It’s almost the same same level as the Witcher three blood and wine.
Give any indie game company another 10-20 years of continued success and they just become any other AAA studio prioritizing the bottom line....remember billzard, riot, etc all started off as indie companies that created really good games.
we should just make "wakeup calls" as a game category above AAA. An absurdly well made game that rejects modern predatory monetization practices but still do extremely well in sales. Elden Ring, Baldurs Gate3, BlackMythWukong,(probably poe2)
No single-player 1-time purchase game is a “wake up call” to the big global studios. They have zero interest in investing $100mil to make $200mil. They want to invest $250-$500mil & make over a billion per year forever. I’m not saying that’s right, but it’s the reality of the economics. Genshin Impact, Fortnite, WoW, CoD, are the type of success that matters to them.
@@ganggang3788haha yea I wish it wasn’t! But I’ve worked in a big studio on smaller single player game that got cancelled, & this is basically what our team leader explain to us
Exactly right, the real wake up call is realising that the companies they think need to "wake up" are well aware of the market and make great profits doing what they're doing. They have enough money to make a game of this quality, but it makes less money, it's that simple.
Finally, someone in this comment section with common sense, like cod sold double the numbers that elden ring or baldur's gate 3 did, that's the real wake up call right there, zenless zone zero made 100 million buck in less than a week, that's a wake up call for a company whose only goal is to make money
I'm 46 years old I've been a gamer since Atari and ColecoVision and when a game does no marketing but gets as popular as this you've obviously done something right
My only complaints in Wukong so far after finishing chapter 5 is how the heals and medicine/item uses dont always go off when pressing the keys AND the ease of missing out on boss fights. Like if you end up facing and beating the boss Duskveil before beating scorpion lord or taking the requested item to Daoist Mi character. You will be locked out on facing them or getting the items from them. Or if you beat chapter 4 boss before finding all the purple seals it locks you out. So very minimal complaints. Game is incredible and just like Elden Ring, it exceeded every expectation i had.
Its okay to miss stuff on a forst playthrough of a game like this with optionnal stuff and secrets. I know i have missed a few things per chapter but i will probably tackle the game again after i finish it, and use a walkthrough to find all the bosses i missed.
The healing and medicine things are actually my only complaints as well. The healing works, but I wish there was a better indicator that the game accepted your input. Medicine, on the other hand, is very annoying because I don't think you can buffer it like with healing
Healing was definetily not good in this game and in found the level design boring but overall a nice game. I also had technical issues because of my pc but thats more my fault then the games. Overall a solid 9/10 for me
A few disagreements with this RUclipsr. Mainly on his insistence that people are tired of the same old genres and games in western gaming and want fresh mythologies like the Chinese mythology when that is not really the case. The Chinese mythology and legends are incredible and varied but that isn't the issue. The repetitive tropes or repeated genres based on Norse, Greek or just European fantasies are not the problem. Elden Ring is heavily based on Norse mythology and also on Tolkien's created mythology. It's heavily based on medieval Western fantasy, but look at how successful it was. Its western influences were presented in a different way than before, a new way, while at the same time maintaining the core aesthetics of these mythologies and cultures in the game. Look at Dark Souls, it's all based on medieval Europe but it has twists and turns and presents it in a fresh way, never done before with the only thing that is closest to it being some Japanese manga like "Berserk" that is also based on dark medieval western fantasy and lore. The Witcher series is based on central and Slavic European cultures. While still maintaining similar traits it did present the story and characters in a different way than the shallow American developers, with an incredible story, worldbuilding, cultures, moral themes and depth that has been lacking in other RPG games in the US and in the UK. There is nothing wrong with Western cultural influences, time periods or genres. The biggest issue is that current western developers have stopped making games for their audiences and properly adapting these mythologies in video game forms, and instead they've started to push divisive identity politics and are driven by greed, not by making a good product. Game Science created a game based on their own culture but they created it knowing who are the core audiences and how to appeal to gamers worldwide.
Being able to RE-SPEC anytime was amazing and all games should have it. 9 out of 10 just finished it. Last two main boss fights were so challenging and fun. The 6 chapter was a big time let down and felt unfinished by game science. To have all that space with not much to do sucked.
I think they had all taht space because you were flying but if they had put too much to do in that space, it would be too easy to feel like you missed things while flying around on the cloud.
@@soapcang696 yes. And I’m glad to be in the gamer community: you can always count on a true gamer (as opposed to the media losers) to be honest about games.
Gaming studios/devs are beholden to its investors. And apparently nowadays western investors don't care about return, they want to be as woke as possible (Blackrock)
I think people need to realize the pendulum always swings. It's what made games like Shadow of the Colossus, Elder Scrolls Oblivion & Skyrim, World of Warcraft, the OG Assassins Creed, The Witcher, Breath of the Wild, Baldur's Gate, and Genshin Impact all standouts of their categories-they were swinging the pendulum in a new direction in ways that felt novel yet familiar. Lots of games released since have just been a rinse and repeat of those models without trying to swing the pendulum in a new direction in any significant way. They're afraid of trying something new that can't be proven as a commercial success to investors. Bottom line is, people just want something new that elevates what already exists. And to do that, devs and investors needs to get comfy taking more risks and taking bigger swings. The tech is there to do it, now we just need the talent and better leadership to pull it off.
I really admire for his thoughtful and respectful approach to reviewing games and works of art. He consistently evaluates them with an unbiased perspective, showing genuine respect for different cultures, which is truly commendable.
Every single person and I mean every single person in china have watched or grown up watching 1986 version of journey to the west tv show which black myth was based on, the rerun of the show is still on most tv stations to this day, you have no idea how popular this tv show is in china, or in asia, It's a cultural phenomenon. Black Myth is literally a love letter to a billion people.
He'll, in the west Black people loved that show, watched it as a kid in the 90s in London. Channel 4 I believe. Buddha was played by a woman and everything!
It's like these gaming journalists are taking out all the frustrations they couldn't bring up about their abusive parents (e.g ubisoft, EA, etc) on this Chinese company because they see an easy target. It's textbook bullying
You have to think about this from a corpo/MBA mindset set. This game isn't a wake-up call that they should make good quality games. Otherwise, they would've picked up that lesson with Elden Ring, BG3, Nier, TLOU, and other great titles that hit GOTY. If anything given all the analytics its a signal that they need to tap more into the 1.4 billion people in the chinese market, given that they are nearly 60-80% of the players who are playing Blackmyth. In terms of being GOTY, it could be a contender, but I honestly believe people are being blinded by the big numbers and not actually realizing that it's less a global audience surging it forward, but the silent majority (i.e china) that up untill this point haven't really surged onto a single game that was also marketed and visible to a western audience without it having its own unique closed off store front, with a chinese exclusive version. Chinese exclusive games/ versions have playerbases that would eclipse most western titles, just people aren't aware of that fact.
I think corpo are well aware of the fact that Chinese Market is Huge because of its population size and people becoming wealthier. The issue is a lot of Western Dev doesn't understand Chinese Market. Not only in gaming, but in every other industry, such as Cars or Food. Chinese Market are extremely competitive for all type of Business, and there are new challengers who enter the scene constantly. Their bars of entry is higher, a generic cookie cutter ain't going to work in China. But is the same over in US and EU. If a game flops in US, it most likely won't sell well in China, and vice versa. Iirc, Baulders Gate had a lot of Chinese Players too, I think it was like 6 million copies sold in China.
To put it simply, it means returning to what a game should be like, "fun", telling a touching story to the best of your ability on the basis of fun, and then using the scene to recreate the world you imagine
If black myth Wukong’s success and concords failure happening at the SAME EXACT TIME isn’t the clearest wake up call to game developers, then I’m afraid nothing can make them learn.
Your money will slap them awake
Either you waste energy waking up the old ones, or you appreciate new blood.
There are many stories out there showing veteran devs leaving rotten companies to start new studios. If there is money to be made, then we just need to keep our eyes open.
On that note, now is probably the best time to bring one's ideas to the table, now that it's pretty much confirmed that the market void is there.
They don’t want to Learn tho, they want you to buy what they make, that’s all.
What is the wakeup call?
China makes more money with gachas, they will not care about Wukong success that much. Only western people think it matters.

For them, diversity means black and LGBTQ.

And don't forget women's rights.

When we step back from social media, news, and the comments sections online… push away the technology (controlled by others) and take control of our own realities, meeting real people and forming bonds & friendships over real interactions… You suddenly realise that the world and people of other countries are generally pretty nice and we have a lot of love, respect, and kindness for each other, their different nationalities and their cultures. ✨🙏
Headless monk was so good at that. The music was banging. 😭
When i was turned into the bat in act 3 i was Just 'welp we are a bat now, let's See what happens' it was great
When you SAY it like that I start to wonder just what you are smoking.
Haven't played it but it just makes the game sound super fun.
Except you only turn to bugs for very few scenarios. Quite boring

They call them "white adjacent" to excuse racism, but yes, preaching diversity and inclusion while trashing others cultures is not a good view (AC shadows and now BM wukong)

I already wasn't going to buy assassin's creed shadow..now I'm absolutely not going to
Ubisoft is ? If this is true i'm surprised i haven't seen people talking about it

one reason I always loved the STALKER series. Hand made locations, made with care

I love that Wukong's success goes against everything what EA has been yapping about, single player games with no MTX are no longer profitable.
Fuck you, good games are always profitable, no matter if it's single player or online.
during the time it took to make this game ea made 2 billion from utlimate team stop dreaming gamers do not reject microtransactions
UBI soft made 1 billion on ac valhalla and 40% was micro
That's what they mean when they say "profitable."
when was the last time a EA single player game made profit? compared to college football and fifa making them millions every week.

You konw what, as a Chinese, I'd like to bring an important political context in this conversation:
Why Chinese people don’t seem to care about or participate in today’s politically correct discussions is because we once had far-left social movements, which are way more left than the so-called "politic correct" in the United States today.
Even CCP adimt these social movements are mistakes(which is really hard for them)
I just want Americans know we've been through all that. I know American is "culturally" a new country, and it will reform during these all movements. But Chinese people know this will only lead to the bad ending, and it's also the reason why most Chinese people nowadays are practical then ever in our history.
;)
@@treelineresearch3387 from chaper 2 onward the map open up and level of exploration is great, despite invisible walls and non openworld, it felt straight similar to Elden Ring. Mao Zedong once wrote in a poem: "Today we cheer for Sun Wukong, only because the demonic mist has returned once again."

Definitely a souls like 👍

"Lacking in inclusivity and diversity" is not something that should ever be considered in a review of a fucking video game. Fucking crazy.
43:39 this is such a good point, I’m someone who does not have a lot of time so Wukong is perfect for me maybe even a little bit too long. But the frequency of awesome content and challenges and scenery and leveling and loot and surprises made it so the game felt like it was rewarding my time. I felt like I was being spoiled.
In fact, tracing back to the source, Sun Wukong did not originate from Buddhism. His master was the ancestor of Chinese Taoism, and the entire Havoc in Heaven is about him fighting Taoist gods, Erlang Shen, and Nezha, all come from earlier myths:封神演义(The name cannot be translated into English, Probably explained as the battle of gods.)
After Sun Wukong failed in his attempt to cause trouble in Heaven, he was punished by the Buddhist leader and was imprisoned under a mountain for 500 years.
So essentially, the original novel depicted the clash between Buddhism and Taoism?
@@georgevan2606 There are many interpretations of Journey to the West, as it is one of the four great classics of China. The root of this myth should be the struggle for belief between Buddhism and Taoism, which is equivalent to the redistribution of interests in our modern times.
@@georgevan2606 The interlude in the song, fart, the lyrics of the song about the Three Realms should be the Three Realms of Buddhism, and the Four Continents are also the Four Continents mentioned in Buddhism. The 81 difficulties encountered by the team to obtain scriptures, the yaoguai in it are all the subordinates or mounts of Taoist gods, or boys

I'm Leaning towards Geopolitics under the guise of Wokism
Essay 😝
There was a statement jn a film a few years ago (i cannot remember the film unfortunately, but the quote stuck with me)
Paraphrased it went like this: "you make the popular film so that you can fund the artsy passion project"
This is very apropo in gaming.....make a gacha style game to generate ongoing recurring revenue, use the funds generated by that to make a high fidelity, single player game with a highly engaging story etc.

First Black Myth Wukong next big one Phantom Blade Zero!
we should just make "wakeup calls" as a game category above AAA.
Too much common sense in your statement 😢

Might be due to them reducing the scope of the game from 13 chapters to 6 cos of budget restrictions.

It's like these gaming journalists are taking out all the frustrations they couldn't bring up about their abusive parents (e.g ubisoft, EA, etc) on this Chinese company because they see an easy target. It's textbook bullying
This game (also GoW, lies of p, stellar blade and ghost of Tsushima) showed me that good games can still be made in modern times.
