Hi Scott, I'm going to tell you something funny and painful at the same time. I closed my account in a bank here in Spain because I started to feel they did some unfair things. After a couple of years as a client in another bank, it was acquired by the first one. Then, I moved my account to another bank. One year later, the same story, this bank was acquired for the first one. With Adobe, it happens exactly the same. I'd been for years running away from them, and always, always, they became buying my preferred tools and destroying them. Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and now Figma.
Ofc this happens, but its a different story when it involves open source projects, i dont really know how open penpot actually is, but in general, open source projects cannot "die", because everyone can replicate them (in a totally legal way), because the code is open to look and replicate, thats why you will never have to worry about microsoft buying linux for example.
Adobe sucks! Full disclosure; I grew up with Adobe software, they did amazing things, right up until they forced my hand by demanding that I rent their software for a monthly subscription. I turned my back on them when I started freelancing and vowed never to subscribe to their dark arts. Now that they have acquired Figma, I fear that the best features of Figma will be locked behind an extortionate monthly subscription. A dark day for design. 😢 I'm going to try Penpot tonight!
Yeah, even renting their software is ridiculously expensive -- compare to say Microsoft Office. I know it's a different space, but I think it's an apt comparison.
If enough people had signed up to pay for Figma licenses they wouldn't have had to sell their product to Adobe... Honestly as a professional if someone can't afford to pay $12 per month for a tool that will help them make thousands per month then they might want to think about a different profession. Many other professions have way more expensive monthly overheads. For example an average Uber driver spends about $200 on fuel per month... Considering that, $50 per month for a Creative Cloud licence isn't actually that bad.

If Adobe acquired this tool and make it proprietary, we still can have the code up to date point. Someone/another team can fork it and starts developing on it. OpenOffice had faced similar situation. It didn't go closed source but development was slow and there was problem with other things. Some of the developers forked it and made Libre office.

Bro why does open source people just copy proprietary products just for the sake of open source. What good does having a open source design tool do for ux designers ? Well if figma turns out to be a worse product after acquisition then its other story, but open source just copying proprietary products is something i find truly disgusting
@@syntaxfm no buddy, linux isnt just copying windows, it has real advantages, where it actually benefits from being open source. You completely missed the point by mentioning linux. I was obsessed by Adobe, run away from it. now they still find the way to appear in my life again T_T
is the deal confirmed?
like confirm confirmed?
Have the same feeling about this as when Trello was consumed by atlassian.
Back to sketch!! :)
Oh man. You are right. Adobe will mascarade figma. Figma is competition for xd.
Nah, they will prolly massacre XD.
@@benfrese3573 figma adobe deal went on a tossed
I bet that MS and Apple has stocks from Adobe or maybe they are in the main board so they ensure that Adobe never make a version for Linux.
is being open source a definite garanty of nether being acquired by adobe?
If Adobe acquired this tool and make it proprietary, we still can have the code up to date point. Someone/another team can fork it and starts developing on it.
OpenOffice had faced similar situation. It didn't go closed source but development was slow and there was problem with other things. Some of the developers forked it and made Libre office.
Pixso is like twin brother of Figma
Yes. Adobe killed it. Moving on.
Lets us join the penpot comunity
Nice find!!! 🤩
Agree. Adobe is evil, but on the other hand I use it so many years. I don't image to operate without Photoshop, Illustrator or Lightroom. Probably there are alternatives, but it is not easy to switch ;(
You can do it!
Yep I've been using Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher now will look at Penpot & Lunacy. All this learning new software has gotten me out of my Adobe rut now if Icould only find a good replacement for Adobe After FX then I would be completely free of my Adobe addiction. Man it takes time to wean :-)
It actually is. Try is.
@@ElPetrenkoI'm looking for an Adobe After Effects replacement software know any?
Open source alternative: inkscape->pureref, and back it up with git.
not long after PenPot matures to v 2.0, adobe shits the bed LOL. Love it.
Try Akira
Cool. Thanks Scott!
Goodbye Figma 😢
figma is great , def not dead.. they just made ui messy and complicated lately .. but they arent going any where .. still the leader forever .. its not dead cmon
lol
Open Source is the future 🙌
All PenPot needs is auto layout and I'm good to go.
I have to try this. Never gonna use Adobe shit
Oh, lord frick adobe, now no figma anymore
Well, now we have to look for alternatives for real, f*ck Adobe, I'm sure it's gonna be expensive for some of us😭😭😭😩
we are being manipulated by all software providers
Bro why does open source people just copy proprietary products just for the sake of open source. What good does having a open source design tool do for ux designers ? Well if figma turns out to be a worse product after acquisition then its other story, but open source just copying proprietary products is something i find truly disgusting
You find having an open source option disgusting? Do you find Linux disgusting?
@@syntaxfm no buddy, linux isnt just copying windows, it has real advantages, where it actually benefits from being open source.
You completely missed the point by mentioning linux. I even explicitly mentioned ux design tools and what not. Whats mind boggling is many people automatically shunning a commercial product just because the devs chose to make the said code closed. Open source isnt disgusting, but just think about it, what good is copying a product just for the sake of being open source actually worth for. A UX design tool at that
@@syntaxfm You know lets just leave it. Not saying you are doing it, but It just grinds my gears when devs attempt to market a mediocre product solely because its open source as if thats helping (for the most part). If penpot just plagiarising figma or figma being worse than penpot remains to be seen i truly hope not.
