Tiny Baby Seal stuck in fishing net

  • This very small baby seal gave us sleepless nights. We spotted him first a few days ago. He had a big piece of green trawler net wrapped around his neck and mouth, but we could not get close to him. He would always hide in the middle of a group of seals and escape into the water, before Antoine and Naude from Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN) were able to reach him. Once in the water, we have to wait for a while before they re-emerge on the beach. When we finally got to him, it took only a few moments to cut him loose from a potentially fatal entanglement. He had no signs of injury, but the net was heavy for him and would have slowed him down when hunting, and it would have become tighter and tighter from his movements and his natural growth.
Ghost fishing nets like this green trawler net are responsible for many of our seals' entanglements. Until legislation gets changed, we will encounter this situation over and over again. We will continue to patrol the beaches around Swakopmund and Walvis Bay and Pelican Point. 🦭

I discovered your channel literally a week ago and it really lifts my mood everyday. The thought of all these precious babies dying because of our trash and no help around is horrible. Therefore I am so happy that you are doing this.
If there are Karma points then you are getting them for sure. There are a lot of seals voting for you guys. 🙂
When we "run" with you after the seals, I always try to guess which seal you are going for. That makes a lot of fun 😂. And when I get it although it is hard, I am like: "I knew it! It was this one!"
And I always think that the captured seals are like: "Okay, now I die. This is it." But when they run off, they are like: "What dump predetors! They let me loose. I will live! Hahahaha" Not getting how nice you just treated them. So while I wish they would recognize you finally as the good guys who come to help them, I think they will always be like "Ahhhhhh, predetors!!!!" And then be smug when you let them loose. (Only exeption: The thankful ones who realize immediately). So thank you again for your great work!

@@ayyappanchithambaram4575 It is already a nature reserve, but the seals get their entanglements from the Ocean. We are a busy harbour town, with a huge fishing industry. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do.

No it isn't a preserve even if they wanted it to be. Just 500 meters off shore I keep seeing fishing vessels. How many seals get caught in their nets each day?
