I have a set up that I did to my ALICE back in 2006 that looks just like this. I used scavenged parts of an assault pack to sew PALs webbing on the pack lid and sides. this allowed for the attachment of USMC issued MOLLE sustainment pouches and two HSG saw drum pouches on the lid. I, too, replaced all the metal for fastex that was salvaged from the same pack...I made some removable shoulder strap pads and it was perfect. still have it. Thank God that my Grandma and STA platoon made learn to sew! Semper Fidelis
The way you went about attaching a pouch to the Alice pack lid is pure genius. The overall effect of attaching the pouches the way you did makes my attaching a Molle Sustainment pouch to each side of the pack seem like amateur hour.

The medium ALICE is maybe the best pack for most Marine infantry operations. I used one extensively from 04-15 and somewhere in there had TT modify it. Claymore pouch on the lid, reinforced stress areas, MOLLE above the pouches and on the sides. I’m not sure if you’ve seen them or not, but check out WTF straps. They’re hypalon malice clips essentially, you can use them to replace all your gator clips. More secure, no worries about rust, no noise and a bit more svelte.
The scrim is epic on that pack . I really like pack covers I think they are a must if nothing other than making them more weather resistant but the camouflage is a huge bonus if not a must.
For those trying to save some money, there's a setup known as the 'Hellcat' that you can Google that uses surplus MOLLE gear to replace the shoulder straps and hip belt. Will save an absolute ton of money. This also makes the shoulders adjustable for height, though as others have alluded to, if you're an 'average' height of 5'8" these are redundant (can speak from experience on this), however the MOLLE shoulders are still a huge improvement over the originals. Frame replacement you may or may not need of course. The Hellcat mods can be done on both the Med and Lrg ALICEs. I have a Large pack I've done the Hellcat stuff on, but nothing like all the extra pouches quite like this. My BOB is that pack, but being a T1 diabetic I have extra supplies I have in it that take up a solid chunk of space and weight that one of those large sustainment pouches would solve nicely for me. And I really need to get on the 2-quart canteen bus, those things are awesome. Thanks a ton for your work man, you're doing great. Sound was fine; there's no way around the noise when it comes to working with stuff like that IMO. I can tell your pacing regarding presentation is improving also. Excellent video!!! UK 🇬🇧 based and just brought an Alice pack. Very different to anything I've ever used so looking at what others do with theirs. Very interesting to see how you have molded yours.
Having served during the reign of the Alice pack, I can tell you Alice packs weren't issued any better than old beat up molle packs today. My first unit I got issued an Alice pack that probably was used in Nam. The frame was cracked in multiple places, it had Lc1 straps that were flat as cardboard, it had holes in the pack bag itself. But CIF told me if the holes didn't meet a specific size it was still servicable.....yeah. Troops beat up gear. That's all their is to it. But I am a huge Alice pack fan. A large Alice is my current go to pack for my own civil preparedness. 💪🤙
This definitely brings it to the next level. I used the straps and kidney pad from fire force tactical though for money reasons. Looks like there's more work to do.
Nice mods. I’m definitely gonna use some of this stuff on my setup. I use a British bergan with tailored pouches. Similar setup to yours but your mods will make it even better. Could you show us how you pack the ruck out and how all the kits/ tools you mentioned in earlier videos would be packed? Also I was wondering if you could do a video on what boots you recommend and footcare tips.
To help with the 2 GP pouches take a piece of 550 and tie a large knot on one side. Slide it through the metal grommet at the bottom then tie that down to the bag or frame if they have the metal drain holes.
Wow, ALICE pack, great memories and nightmares. I remember the day I switched to a Dana Terraplane X... I took my ALICE that I had cussed for years and unceremoniously slung it into a dumpster with a few choice words of good bye... now I wish I had kept it just for nostalgia. I am looking at an LBT Enhanced Warfighter JUmp Pack now and seeing your video of an ALICE with "upgrades" (didn't have that option ) and the price of yours compared to the LBT... hmmmm... makes me think twice.

You're dropping real knowledge for the masses and young soilders. Keep it up! I got the ILBE to replace my army issued ruck and love it. Why do you choose the ALICE over the Marine issued?
Just because the marine issue one is prone to breaking. The frame breaks under heavy loads over time, as well as the shoulder buckles on the top. They always tear off when you need them most, and you have to walk however far with all of your weight on one shoulder.
@TheGruntPerspective Thanks for the heads up. It's funny you mentioned the straps. I haven't had any issues but it's been a couple times when loaded down it seemed a bit fragile, but it's held up so I just figured it was me being paranoid. I'll start looking for a replacement.
I put my molle2 shoulder and waist straps in my large alice and its lightyears better than the original suspension system. Its even more comfortable than my molle2 pack and my ilbe . Super lightweight as far as millitary surplus goes
I have the grey ghost bar 5200 (sister company to tactical tailor and their version of the malice) same frame and straps, but I'll use that in colder months and swap it put with a medium alice during warmer months.
Your concealment blanket is very interesting. You mention it is a 4'x5' fishing net. Could you provide a little more info on it. Is it a Gill net? could you provide a link to what you purchased? Thanks.
Have you ever considered making a typical ruck packing list video? Like, for a three day FTX with ranges and patrol bases, how would you pack your ruck?
I'm gonna have to give something like this a shot with my spare medium pack. I got one only for the frame to replace the trash plastic one that came with the FILBE ruck when I was a comms guy but now that sack is way too big
creative. but the extra pouches and such feels like a lot of extra weight. feels like you put a lot of work into it, and I like the thinking. but I can't help but wonder how much better it would be if you removed the old stuff and just sewed new buckle straps on, and sewed the pouches right into place. eliminate the old attachments and extra layers of material, extra webbing, etc. being able to sew really opens up possibilities, and you can sew some pretty good stuff even if it doesn't look perfect. would definitely like to see a bit more on your camo cover and how you attached it to the ruck.
@@TheGruntPerspective yes, but it's not just about weight. it would be potentially more durable, more slick, more optimized, can replace all of the ALICE clips and such with whatever attachments you wanted for removable items, etc. The more things I start to fix by sewing, the more things I start to just think about sewing right from the start. What you're doing isn't wrong, but once you've gotten something into a config that works, it can benefit from being made better or more permanent (assuming it doesn't need to change from that config sometimes). I've modified my gear as you are too. And I've even done mods along these lines to military vehicles, and weapons. I made a mod to my rifle to fix an issue in Afghanistan using 550 cord, that I still use today on my personal rifles, as It works so well and I haven't found a better solution yet (noncritical issue). But sometimes the effort I put in would be far better spent sewing it than just jerry-rigging it. But by removing excess straps, zipties, buttons, webbing, redundant layers, optimizing pouches, and consolidating pouches (fewer larger ones as appropriate), the amount of extra savings can add up while resulting in a far simpler and less floppy pack.

Ive been up all night modifying my Alice figured id scour youtube and see what everyone else is doing. Been out for 5 years now and i still think about the corps often. Keep up the vids man great work 👍
Nice setup man! I did a similar mod on an ALICE Medium back in 2011. Didn’t end up adding any pouches to mine, just the buckle Mod, paint, and TAG Hip belt and shoulder straps. Got it all setup to use in Afghanistan and then I got put in a Mobile Platoon, the pack ended up staying in the FOB 98% of the deployment 🤦🏽♂️ Couple questions, Is there any reason you opted not to use MALICE Clips for the pouches? And, have you considered using smaller individual pieces of netting or scrim to each pouch/section of the pack in a way were each pouch is individually accessible, but still visually broken up?
No particular reason for using alice clips instead of malice! On the big pouches I used malice clips cause that’s what I had laying around! And for the smaller ones I used alice clips because I didn’t have any short malice clips. And yes I have considered using smaller pieces but I choose to use the large piece so I have the capability to take it off of my ruck and bring it with me on patrol to plus up my individual concealment in something like an ambush or observation position!
Can you do a more in depth video of where you got the frame and suspension and a closer look on how you mounted everything like a close up look it would be greatly appreciated i really want to build one of these
Mannnn I would want this damn thing if the shit hit the fan. I have a medium Alice and I’m going to build it pretty close to this… right after I sell my house to afford all those dope ass pouches lol
So, why not go with a Large version? Pros and cons I know but with as much exterior pouches I had to ask. I have carried both in service and opted to buy the large for my civi gear stash. Amazing mods and creativity on your modernization, you provided some great ideas for me, thx.
I’ve used a large, and I have a malice pack right now for if I need more then this. But i go for the medium whenever I can just for the sake of having a smaller and lighter pack
Hey man, this is probably the best SOP set up video I've ever seen. Being a prior 0351 section leader, it would have been awesome to have this kind of knowledge modeled for us. Quick question on the bungees, do you use any particular length that you know of for securing the isomat, the 2qt canteen carriers, etc? Semper fi brother.
Thank you for the support! As far as the bungee cords, I think all mot mine are about 3 feet long or so? I’m not sure, for the iso mat I have to wrap them twice so some shorter ones would probably work better for that
@@exvan3571 Hell yeah. I'm old enough that I sent my ruck into TT for the mods and they sent it back. I wasn't cool enogh then for the full MALICE, but maybe I can be now.😄😄😄
CMC reading list has great reference on loads, march, & combat training. BUT COs wont read and learn. 6000cuin is just stupid. how much does the extra straps, buckles, weigh? extra big, fill it with crap you won't need. rigged my large alice to work w/o full frame, added 2 extra alice pack pockets , rigger made claymore pouch. aircraft first aid kit stiched on. had riggers make up spie rigs to keep rigged into 782 belt gear. wanter big so i would not have to dump entire pack. an early malice type circa 84. at the time we still teams. scrounged enought kit to outfit the 12 marines in the sub teams for fighting. sleep pads cut to add to straps, 782 belt. then the inspection kit for the remf inspections. the thing seems to always be pack everything you will need for year on your back, out for a week. when the line crossing WOs came into the teams, they began to destory the entire show.
My humble criticism is only on the ghillie cover. Do you veg it? if not, it looks like a big mossy wire brush that is not naturally occurring in nature. Im not super experienced, only applying the little i know about ghillie suits to the ghillie pack cover. Great content and thank you for all the time effort and information!

Looks like the price has gone up quite a bit since I bought mine unfortunately.
Nice, your lid has that weird lining like mine.
When do we get an updated video of whats in it?
Yuuuuuuuut!!! Comin at ya from San Diego! keepin it classy and just alot more nasty. Just subscribed. Ive been up all night modifying my Alice figured id scour youtube and see what everyone else is doing. Been out for 5 years now and i still think about the corps often. Keep up the vids man great work 👍
I have a more in depth tutorial on my Instagram if you have questions!
Keep going!
Aye aye
I add a grab handle. to the top of the ruck frame . Thank You for Your Service !!!!!!! .
Thanks for watching!
OV Innovations makes a really nice grab handle.
Nice setup man! I
did a similar mod on an ALICE Medium back in 2011. Didn’t end up adding any pouches to mine, just the buckle Mod, paint, and TAG Hip belt and shoulder straps. Got it all setup to use in Afghanistan and then I got put in a Mobile Platoon, the pack ended up staying in the FOB 98% of the deployment 🤦🏽♂️
Couple questions,
Is there any reason you opted not to use MALICE Clips for the pouches?
And, have you considered using smaller individual pieces of netting or scrim to each pouch/section of the pack in a way were each pouch is individually accessible, but still visually broken up?
No particular reason for using alice clips instead of malice! On the big pouches I used malice clips cause that’s what I had laying around! And for the smaller ones I used alice clips because I didn’t have any short malice clips. And yes I have considered using smaller pieces but I choose to use the large piece so I have the capability to take it off of my ruck and bring it with me on patrol to plus up my individual concealment in something like an ambush or observation position!
Can you do a more in depth video of where you got the frame and suspension and a closer look on how you mounted everything like a close up look it would be greatly appreciated i really want to build one of these
The frame attaching is very straightforward, if you buy one you can’t fuck it up
Mannnn I would want this damn thing if the shit hit the fan.
What is the length of the bungee cords? Thx
I have no idea. If I had to guess I’d say 3 feet
Thanks for watching!
Where did you find 2 qt canteen pouches that face the same direction?
I just put the canteen in there backwards
literally came here to ask the same question ha
@@TheGruntPerspective Oh ok. I thought Maybe they were different pouches than standard 2 qt USGI. Nice work. Im in the process of modding mine
Gibson's tactical make 2qt pouches that face opposite
I swear that looked like a hay bale at first!
Thoughts on putting a 117 pouch on the inside like the issued pack?
My thoughts are that it is heavy
Hey man, this is probably the best SOP set up video I've ever seen. Being a prior 0351 section leader, it would have been awesome to have this kind of knowledge modeled for us. Quick question on the bungees, do you use any particular length that you know of for securing the isomat, the 2qt canteen carriers, etc? Semper fi brother.
Thank you for the support! As far as the bungee cords, I think all mot mine are about 3 feet long or so? I’m not sure, for the iso mat I have to wrap them twice so some shorter ones would probably work better for that
Wow. Good job
Very nice video! I have an ALICE pack and need a little more space, so this video is perfect, thank you
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
is it possible to get the dimensions for the top centered pouch ?
I don’t know what they were and I don’t believe I have it anymore
Any plans of making a video on a waist/war/battle belt set up?
I’ve already got one! Check out my channel!
Crossfire frame if you want the best for use with armor. Nothing comes even close.
i have their dg3 pack. it looks liek they don't make that model anymore. sad. great pack!
Great setup! We would love to send you one of out Fortitude frames to try out! shoot us a line brother
Thank you! Hit you up on instagram!
What are the general contents of this ruck?
Well in this specific video? A bunch of bullshit to give it some form. In the future I plan to do a ruck load-out video though!
i'm 6'1 the alice frame is too short for me. when the kidney pad and belt on, the top of the frame is digging into my shoulders.
@@MrSGL21 the malice frame is a little bit longer. I’m 6’2” and it works great for me
Are you sure you're wearing the pack right? I'm 6'1" and with the belt buckle right over my belly button, the pack rides perfectly.
Cool vid
Bro can you deconstruct and rebuild your pack so we can get a better idea of how you actually attach your pouches?
I need to replace the main bag, when I do I’ll make a build tutorial.
@@TheGruntPerspective hell yea! I just bought one and I wanna rig mine up like yours for the scout indoc
I posted a tutorial on my Instagram!
@@TheGruntPerspective you’re the man! Thanks for not forgetting about me lol
Can you send a link to the jute you used ? Or how you made it?
Yes please
MALICE good in 2004. Still good in 2024.
Timeless design
MALICE frame is $200 now. Still worth it.
@@exvan3571 Hell yeah. I'm old enough that I sent my ruck into TT for the mods and they sent it back. I wasn't cool enogh then for the full MALICE, but maybe I can be now.😄😄😄
How did you send it over?
@Tovashi
Go to Tactical Tailor, then Ruck Mods. You choose what you want, pay, then ship your ruck in per their instructions
Keep going!!
Definitely an expensive pack, but the Tac Tailor Rhino pack is a modern malice pack and its phenomenal
What are the 3 pouches attached to the Alice webbing that sit over the 3 external pouches? I think you said "Tac Shields"? But I'm not sure.
Yep the brand is tac shield. I’m not there the model but their website has them in stock!
We use to use a claymore or satchel bag on the top flap
Huge claymore fan
My humble criticism is only on the ghillie cover. Do you veg it? if not, it looks like a big mossy wire brush that is not naturally occurring in nature. Im not super experienced, only applying the little i know about ghillie suits to the ghillie pack cover. Great content and thank you for all the time effort and information!
I told him it looked like a hay bale.
I’m going to build my large Alice like this well except for the middle pouch I can’t do that cause I have the large and there is little pockets there
Thanks for watching!
@@TheGruntPerspective crazy I used to hate rucking in the military but now that I’m out I enjoy being able to pack what I want and not have to just pack for weight lol
Where did you get your malice frame, straps and belt?
Tactical tailor
what is the zip tie mod, i’m not sure if this is on the under section or where?
@@namethatcorn2879 basically just using a zip tie to prevent the Alice clips from coming undone
1:01 "I'm putting out as much as I can..."...that's what she said 😎
