I’m making a similar one out of black locust as we speak. Probably the hardest wood in North America and very light weight, it grows wild here in my area of Alabama and it grows VERY fast.

Awesome! I've been wanting to make a Monk shillelagh myself. Where did you get the wood from? Also, what did you use for the dark finish?

I make a lot of shillelaghs so I'm always on the lookout for suitable materials, I usually collect from local woodland but I was lucky enough to find this in a friends woodstore (fully seasoned!)
The finish is with woodstain, burning then varnish

Well I know that shillelaghs are typically made from blackthorn, I would imagine that’s hard to come by (especially a root burl) what kind of wood did you use for this particular build?, Hickory, Maple, or have you found another material?

This one is beech (we don't have hickory here & there's only one species of maple & it's quite uncommon)

Beautiful work, as always. Do you ever get ash or mountain ash? Hazel?

Yep, though I don't find suitable ash or mountain ash pieces as often as I'd like. I've a nice one in crabapple in
