So what does Anne Rice, author of The Vampire Chronicles Series, think of Stephanie Meyer's massively successful Twilight novels and the True Blood series?
Not a legend, and didn't she always sue her fans for making fanfictions? And I find it disturbing that she glamourize pedophilia and incest in her vampire chronicles.
She made a very smart statement: " *My* vampires don't go to high school." In one sentence she showed she is aware that Edward and Bill are other kinds of vampires that aren't linked to hers, and that there is no reason behind the comparison of the two. Her work stands by itself, as do the others', and nobody in their right mind compares apples and pears.
She was the first author to turn vampires into conflicted heroes. Before her, vampires were monsters preying on humans. Readers were supposed to be scared of Dracula and Nosferatu, but when the Vampire Chronicles came out, people started fantasising about becoming vampires themselves. Louis and Lestat were portrayed as superstars, she made them glamorous and gave them real depth of character. That's her great contribution to the genre. All these new authors are influenced by that.
She did not turns it into conflicted hero only favored villains . You may apply that to Louie alone or Pandora if they would really tell her story.Mostly it is about getting people to identify sympathize with the villain and excuse his or her behavior.
I love how graceful she was with this interview. She can aknowledge that different types of vampire stories are happening, and it's not a bad thing! Would she put hers in school? No way. But she understands why domesticating them works so well. Every author has a different vision, and just because it's not her idea doesn't make it bad. Kudos to Anne for being so classy.
Agreed no other comes close to The Brat Prince Lestat, he was the first vampire in the film adaptation that aroused my interest of the vampire mythology before I saw Interview with the vampire I found vampires to be risible generic typical clichéd movie monsters until I saw the film and read the whole series, Lestat became the vampire that I identified with when ever I here of vampires 💯
She is very gracious when speaking about other authors. Many authors have put themselves on pedestals and have attacked others about their quality of writing. I think it is up to the readers to judge. I am not fond of some of the books out there and feel their subject matter is distasteful plus consider them poorly written. I have peers who think otherwise. It is a good thing there is enough material out there for all of us to read what we like.
miss Pamela Kullo Egelton thinks for the coplmamet i am a author myself the truth is its not easy has you think i been writeing since 2010 i got five books three involing vampires first fansty second a paramnormal romance thriid the prequel to it about two side chacters
You didn't internet in the early 2000s did you Anne Rice was anything but gracious when it came to fanfics and critics of her work and was quick to litigate. She's since toned it down but it was pretty insufferable...
YEAH, UNTIL THEY BAN THOSE BOOKS TOO- OR PICK UP BURNING BOOKS BECAUSE OF THE IDEAS OF WHATS INSIDE ISN'T "RIGHT"... AND NO I'M NOT SHOUTING, IT'S JUST EASIER FOR ME TO CATCH SPELLING MISTAKES WHEN THE LETTER ARE ALL CAPED- JUST SAYING.
I agree that Twilight isn't the best compared to Anne Rice. I hated Edward's seemingly immature and pathetic nature but the vampires in that universe are terrifying if you think about it. Humans have no defense against them and are helpless to stop a vampire if they are chosen as their victim. At least Anne Rice took pity on the humans in her books.
LOVE Anne's reaction to the host saying "... lemme show you how to do werewolves.' in relation to Twilight. Cracked me right up, she was speechless and I am sure we all thought, 'yup.' I read The Wolf Gift and fell in love with her writing all over again. I heard the 2nd may be coming out in October... can't wait for it.
Anne Rice don't worry even how many vampire characters spring up nowadays, I will surely assure you that I will eternally choose and put your vampires up in the top of my list.. nobody can beat them!
She pays homage to Bram stoker and recognizes that Dracula and Dracula's daughter laid the foundation our pivotal towards opening the door the type of work she does
Love Anne Rice the most! True Blood may have vivid (raunchy) characters but Rice’s depiction of a character’s flaws, even (especially) a vampire’s flaws, is great.
clearly you haven't seen True Blood, let alone read the books the tv show extensively depicts character's flaws including vampire's flaws, there are constant plotlines surrounding flaws and backstories of characters which make the characters complex and morally grey since they do some good deeds and also some bad deeds and are often faced with moral dilemmas
damn.. she is soooo polite and classy.. I would have put Twilight down if I were in her place.. with mentioning that indeed domesticated vampires in high-school is a stroke of genius in business.. all those full of angst teenagers are a easy prey market.. but still.. she is lovely and still for those who are careful can see the subtile hints there... she is a genius and a realy clasy woman.. love her and love the book:X
I love how she's not hating on it, see? That's how cultured people behave. Now, I would love to see her reaction to What We Do In The Shadows, both the movie and TV show 😂 and how Guillermo wants to become like Armand (Antonio Banderas)
Clint Ronnow as if the whole “tortured soul” thing didn’t come from Rice’s characterization to begin with. Yes, I agree that Lestat is why Meyer or Harris have the lead vampire as such an inward, reflective person.
Interview with the Vampire, was an Iconic piece of Literature, she basically single-handedly revived the Gothic Horror Romance Novel! Her work is a great deal like Mary Shelley Wollstonecraft. Frankenstein, is never adequately done justice in any of the movies, but, a little secret, The Incredible Hulk, is Frankenstein. Hulk looks like the Monster, but, in the Novel, he doesn't have some muscles even covered over, with skin, and Frankenstein's Monster, is highly intelligent, and speaks.
I know! It's crazy how it was rejected 5 times before getting published! She said that in an interview. But her tenacity got it published and the rest is history.
I am a huge Anne Rice fan, and I must say Yes she is an Original Vampire Author, if it was not for her vampires you would not have Edward, Bill, or even the vampire d, she is the one that made vampires beautiful and wanting, there is a whole lot of information and documentry about her and how they say "She is the one that made A vampire look beautiful".
I emailed her and she emailed me and we had a great discussion about one [particular book and it was actually HER not an assistant, she’s wonderful to chat to!
Yup team Eric over Bill. And Twilight would have survived sparkly vampires if only it hadn’t focused on Bella Swan! and been more edgy instead of angsty. Like if the story had been Alice’s it would have been sooooo much better.
In Queen of the Damned Lestat mentioned he can go in to uncontrollable fits of laughter I think I saw it in Anne's face there towards the end of the video 😆💙
I like that she is kind about twilight. It doesn't hold a candle to her books, but it doesn't need to. We already have her books. I would like to see a darker story within the twilight universe though. The Cullens and the Denali clan are the only vegetarians mentioned. How terrifying would the others be? They have almost no weaknesses and they are as cruel as any other vampire from other stories.
I read vampire chronicles like 20 years ago. And recently I began to listen to the audio books while I drive and do chores around the house. I've been listening to Lestat and Louis meeting each other after so many years over an over! I haven't been able to continue the story! hahaha That part is so superb!!! And of course, I loved reading about Marius!!
I wonder what she would had said about the Vampire Diaries 😄 Though there is one scene I liked which was when Damon put away the book "Twilight", shook his head and said "I miss Anne Rice". Good taste, Damon, good taste! 😄
There's no need to compare and criticize Charlaine Harris and Stephanie Meyer. There writing weaknesses have been highlighted all over the internet. Anne Rice's style is not without critics. What most successful novelists have in common is that they know how to create a great story and drive the story to a satisfactory climax and completion. Style is important, but never important as story and pacing. I think of Dan Brown. I'm sure a college writing teacher could mark up his manuscripts for copious style errors, but people love his stories.
Eh? Stephanie Meyer kinda deserves the harsher critiques, from what I remember she was very much self centered and thinks her poop don't stink, I otherwise agree with you when it comes to charlaine harris.
Anne rice was such a great writer she’s kind of my writing hero. Sorry to hear she’s gone. Love her style. My mother was a hopelessly bad writer. The anne rice vampires were the best by far. better than bram stoker. She was a brilliant woman. So much bad writing out there it makes you love the good writers more.
brilliant interview ... the writer proves to be beyond all expectations ironic ... as in the end are lestat and Louis .... the irony of not getting old in an aging world
The Lady had class and grace, she could have been disparaging towards other Vampire fiction, but she didnt. She appeared to appreciate other writers Vampire- lore.
I do agree. The reason why we have Bill and Eric is because of Lestat and Louis her orginal good and evil vamps, Lestat would kill Edward and bill, with one finger.
Oh come on... To go back to Bram Stokerr just proves that this amazing woman changed the game. She recreated the modern vampire decades ago. and if you can't give her that, somethings wrong with you. lol Her books opened the genre to the mainstream and started the whole fixation, we still have,to this day, with vampires. If not her who? Bram Stoker? thats a little remote not to take anything away from him. I love ANNE
Across several videos I’ve seen, I don’t think some of the comments meant it this way but they make Anne Rice sound smug. I think she’s just a humble person who recognizes a book that she doesn’t enjoy but is a fresh take on the supernatural/vampires for a younger audience. She is diplomatic, but I don’t think that makes her smug. And also, her books are her babies so of course they may reign over all other supernatural/vampire books to her. Just my opinion.
Ann Rice was the queen of the vampires. If you really look at Vampire Diaries, True Blood, Twilight they all draw from The Vampire Chronicles in some form or another.
Im sorry am I the only that thought that the way the wolves were created in Twilight were VERY MUCH THE SAME as how the vampires came to be in Anne Rice's Queen Of The Damned????
Anne Rice is gracefully diplomatic, but she knows she will forever be the Queen of of the Vampires. No one else comes close.
Colette that is the best way to put Anne Rice!
Anne isn't the Queen !! She's the Empress !
She is the queen of the damned

@@stephanobarbosa5805 I did I also liked Only Lovers left Alive. It reminded me a lot of an Anne Rice novel. In style that is.
She did not turns it into conflicted hero only favored villains . You may apply that to Louie alone or Pandora if they would really tell her story.Mostly it is about getting people to identify sympathize with the villain and excuse his or her behavior.
Have you read the books? The vampires she writes about are apathetic navel gazers at best or bloodthirsty, sadistic, manipulators at worst...
I love how graceful she was with this interview. She can aknowledge that different types of vampire stories are happening, and it's not a bad thing! Would she put hers in school? No way. Anne Rice being beautifully diplomatic

The world needs more negativity. She ought to have dumped on other authors rather than praised them. Well, too late now.
R.I.P Anne Rice. Your novels are trully revoluctionary .
Twilight took one of the most terrifying monsters in folklore, and turned it into Dawson's Creek.
I’m living for this description!
Now that’s an insult to Dawson’s Creek 😂😂
@Red Triangle: the best statement ever concerning this subject 👌👍
YES!!! So true , and now those kids have turned the Mafia into romance novels.
Team Lestat forever! 👑🍷
That's because Anne Rice is a class act to the very core. There isn't a single reason not to like this gentlewoman.

Anne Rice is the Queen of the Vampire novels,Twilight and True Blood author's should pay homage to her.
She pays homage to Bram stoker and recognizes that Dracula and Dracula's daughter laid the foundation our pivotal towards opening the door the type of work she does
True blood does pay homage to her works a bit, the author of twilight is a bit of a snob though....
Charlene Harris (True Blood) and LJ Smith (The Vampire Diaries) pay homage to her. The other one is a different story. She’s a snob.
I love her I love how she's respectful of other artists. Anne I do love other vampire/supernatural aspect books but you're forever the Queen
