I haven't tried this, but as you say, there are lots of videos on RUclips on the subject. There is clearly a knack to getting this right. You need a supply of bottles to practice on, and the right stuff to polish it off to a usable finish. That video that Sparks Tron linked to, seems a reasonable demonstration.
Got a few bottles that I want to do this with. Because you submerged half the bottle thats where it caused the fractures I think. Can be dangerous Id advise wearing some gloves just in case and if you are sanding them wear a mask especially dry sanding as you dont want those glass particles in your lungs, best to wet sand less or no airborne glass particles.
