That was just bonkers Ron and hats off to you for sticking with it. You came up in the chat portion of "Scott Rails" live stream and all were in agreement that the guy from "Classic Model Trains" is a hoot and I thought you would like to know that. Great Job sorting that thing out and now you need another video installing a new decoder in that locomotive, lol. Great video, Jersey Bill
Thanks for the info J.B. A good sound decoder is like $140 ish I believe.....Seems excessive for something I will turn the sound off, in 10 minutes ;-)
Momentum - Phhhhht! When I was a kid, we drove our locos off the layout the old fashioned way, full throttle and on fire. Didn't need any high falutin' "momentum" to get us there.
I have an order in for Athearn. Their turn around time is 3 months. I ordered brushes, brush springs, motor mounts & screws toward the end of December. I opened a case for shipping and they said all items were back ordered and wouldn't be here until March. So I have a couple of Athearn's torn down on my bench and won't get back together until March when I get the parts. I now have 6 MRC HO scale engines. They made some really great F-7A's and B's. Cheers from eastern TN
Hi Ron, always enjoy your videos. I was forced to get into DCC headfirst a few years ago, and I can tell you that the conclusion you made regarding MRC Sound decoders is spot on. I've had a few engines with them, and just replacing them even with a simple silent decoder yield leaps and bounds better results. I completely understand your frustrations with DCC, but I would love to see what you think of the newer decoders! I am a big fan of the Soundtraxx Tsunami 2 decoders for steam engines. I have a number of them in my Hudson's, and with the right speaker setup they bark like hell! Looking forward to the next video!
Reason number 423 why I don’t monkey with DCC. Great video trouble shooting its DCC. I am sure that it helped many! I did like the remote DC sound control!
With you - the “benefits” of DCC are outweighed by the problems-am staying with DC. Also, not totally satisfied with the sounds-seem toy-like-especially the bells & horns - to each his own….
these older first gen locos from athearn are difficult sometimes. i have begun switching mine over to soundtrax and TCS sound decoders. with great success.
Even though the problem was most likely the decoder, many times intermittent problems can be solved by getting rid of those slide tabs and soldering the wires directly to the pads.
Nice video Ron, you're really coming into your style and presentation. I dig what you have going on. How time flies, those early DCC units from the development stage are not my favorite. I really prefer the Atlas and trusty ol blue boxes. Can't forget Roco F units(Milwaukee Road). Thanks for the entertainment and instruction.
I have learned alot from the work that you do to locomotives. I got some beauties that you would like to do a English 5000 Pacific locomotive and a aristo-craft mountain too.
When I was a kid I had a small layout that fit on a 4x4 table and it had a decent amount of scenery on it it had a river and roads and grass and even ballasted track unfortunately the track eventually became rusty and I had to rip up the track and I eventually switched to o gauge
Ron, I think this is the very reason I will stick to DC. Its working, or it aint! All the bell and whistles (pun intended) are great, but what a PITA!. No thanks. I will stay analog for as long as I can!!
That 33% thing is hard to believe how it doesn't fluxuate - strange indeed. Jodi - still looks the same. I am still scratching my head on dcc ... sound thing is nice for about 10 minutes, then it gets annoying. When did you get that John Wilkes I saw on the layout ? I have the whole set - they are banging some big money on ebay .... like a $1000 $$. Love the channel - I am becoming a member. Thanks for the education.
Yes Jodi has aged very well. The John Wilkes just showed up here a few days ago. Channel donation. It's a Rivarossi and have not had any time to research it any further. Sure is a good lookin loco for sure!! Thanks For all your support of my channel Pat!!
@classicmodeltrains yes, when the truck frames were molded, they pulled them out of the mold too fast, causing them to twist. As far as I know this was an issue on the very first pressing of the first production run. I've never encountered it, but there are some forum posts about it.
I say old boy, me thinks yea should put a couple of stoppers at the end of your track, before you give yourself heart failure, Plus I think I am staying with DC end of story. I have noticed that with my long videos that youtube always says only 1.10 or so view rate time, Got some of that Super Lube & carbon grease you use so once my tube of grease I am using now runs out I will try out the super lube, should last a while along with the carbon grease as got a big tube, well it looks bigger than the one you have any way, mine is 80g. Keep up the good work mate
I agree I need something at the track ends. That conductive grease will last a long time. Very little of it is needed for the job. My tube says 85 ml. (3 fl oz)
its an MRC. Junkiest old decoders ive ever seen. Heck ive had two that blew up the moment I put them on the track. Capacitors were wired backwards! im an ESU guy 100% today. excellent motor control and sounds that can be fully customized.
Hi Ron, on this great day for freedom and democracy, your video is longer than Trumps inauguration. I'll stick with analogue over digital withchcraft anyday😂
Just finished watching president Trump's inauguration, and following it with you Ron! I don't even have a DCC loco yet, but I love your videos! Great day so far! 🚂🚃🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🚃

Faithful 33%er here Ron. Excellent video as always. Made my day
Thanking you Big W!!
Jody Foster is the model. Great RUclips show. Your views on taking things apart, cleaning, lubing and assembly are detailed enough to follow.
Yup! I try and make it easy for people to pick up
Hey Ron, another fantastic video! Guys like you make the hobby even more fun! Thanks again
Glad to be helping out!
Momentum - Phhhhht! When I was a kid, we drove our locos off the layout the old fashioned way, full throttle and on fire. Didn't need any high falutin' "momentum" to get us there.
Love my DC block system! Another interesting video. Thanks Ron!
Nice job. Glad you like the wheels! No safety squint needed!
Those are real nice, Thank you very much Steve. Can't wait to try out the 300 grit for doing some good rootin' around!!

That's too bad they are so slow and back ordered that far out
Nice job working on this Santa Fe sd45-2 by athearn genesis
Thanks
Nice Job Ron as always!! 😊

Hi Ron & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Ron & Friends Randy
Hello Randy thank you for watching

The DC side with the sound buttons is real nice. Funny how that never really caught on
I have a pair of Genesis F units with that decoder. JMRI decoder pro handles them perfectly.
Oh? Well that sounds inspirational. Will have to look into that. Thanks for the info!!
I've only watched a few mins and rolling on the floor laughing (sorry). Remember, I said it has a Mind of its Own.
@@lynnmccurdythehdmmrc2561 it gets better and the “it does its own thing” will be answered.
Great video Ron very informative. This will help with what I'm working on now, I think I have it's brother 🤣
Happy to be part of the 33%
Right on!
thanks ron, informative as usual.
Thanks

Thank you for sharing.👍

Thanks Brian
Hey Ron. 2:30 on a Tuesday here in Kyoto. I'm mostly a Kato and brass guy. Love your channel and videos. Very informative. Keep on conducting sir.
Thank you Jose :-)
great video ```` also a great reason to stay dc dont have that kinda patience
Thank you and I agree!
Hi Ron, excellent look into this model. Can i have a high five? Cheers!
Thanks (smack) High 5!!
Heck yeah thanks bro
Love the channel man, you genuinely remind me of Vice Grip Garage but with model trains. Keep the awesome content coming!
Thank you
I use Digitraxx controllers and replace older DCC chip trains with Soundtraxx Tsumami dcc/sound chips and they run beautifully.
I hear ya
I've got a hankerin' for some fava beans and a little Chianti.
He He!
Christine Went from A Car To Train? Oh No!
Too Funny :-D
I have those handrail sets from that ebay dealer. I am going to try paint made for RC car bodies. It is a bit more flexible.
Right on!
nice
Thanks
love the genesis line but the great details are sure delicate
RIGHT!! I guess if you touched it only once to put it on he layout and it stayed there for 10 years it wouldn't be bad :-)
You are Rockstar, that sound is pretty distorted. I would throw that decoder out and run dc only 😂
Bad sound files. It would make a GREAT DC only!!
I have learned alot from the work that you do to locomotives. I got some beauties that you would like to do a English 5000 Pacific locomotive and a aristo-craft mountain too.

My experience with dcc is comparable to my experience with analog and I never really had trouble
How did the track get so rusty?
Ron, I think this is the very reason I will stick to DC. Its working, or it aint! All the bell and whistles (pun intended) are great, but what a PITA!. No thanks. I will stay analog for as long as I can!!
I agree Ray
The early MRC decoders were not very good.
I agree
Jodi Foster, thanks for the video. Have you ever worked on an E-R Models loco? I’m trying to figure one out right now. Thanks again.
Yup. never heard of E-R model loco's though.
That 33% thing is hard to believe how it doesn't fluxuate - strange indeed. Jodi - still looks the same. Hire A Priest And Have Him Perform An Exercisim on It Lol.
I am a priest and I wouldn't touch it!
Lmbo😅😂❤@@NewTestamentDoc
Yeah I took the words right out of my mouth
He He!!
First generation Genesis was quirky. The SD70/SD75 had a problem with warped trucks. There are a ton on Ebay brand new at just around $100.
Warped trucks? Thanks for the heads up!
@classicmodeltrains yes, when the truck frames were molded, they pulled them out of the mold too fast, causing them to twist. As far as I know this was an issue on the very first pressing of the first production run. I've never encountered it, but there are some forum posts about it.
The coupler that came on it is a McHenry by bachmann I believe Ron junk for sure
Yup I agree
Can you tell me what the Dremel wheels are called? Thanks again for another great video!
I wish I could. Someone sent them to me and there is no name on the box. heres the part # X0029VA89H
U should have primered the stanchens bfor spraying the yellpw a grey primer
Agree
Jodi Foster
Yup
I have always been a 33% on most the videos I watch. Which NCE system do you have? Do you like using it?
Powercab. It's the only one Ive used so I have no comparisons. seems pretty straight forward
Get sum medium couplers i run shorts on cars an mediums on power
I agree
MRC DECODER EARLY
Yup
Jodi foster
Yup!
sometimes I think I want DCC trains, then I realize how "high-needs" they are and think again. it is a nice looking loco though.
High maintenance for sure
Mc Henry couplers
Ick! Dont like them, but that's just me
jodie foster
Yup

I came for the trains and stayed for Jodi Foster...
:-)
Ron get a priest to protect you from her watch for her head to spin.
He He!!
Jodi Foster
Yup
In this case I m on of the 33 percent 🙂
Right on!
Uh needs a new decoder and lights and speaker good lord that really sucked
The trash bin was invented so we'd have a place to put MRC decoders.
Lights worked good, speaker would sound better if it had better sound files playing thru it.
It is an N battery
:-)
Jodie Foster
Yup!
