- I had not used my Laowa 25mm in the field for quite some time so I thought it was time to dust off this awesome ultra macro lens. Even though it can be quite difficult to use even in optimal conditions, I can highly recommend this lens for more advanced macro shooters who'd like to capture intricate details of very small subjects.

Awesome stuff as usual! I'm considering a laowa lens but I and kind of leaning toward their new and TINY 85mm f/5.6 for full-frame or APSC. Of course, it's only 2x unlike the 25 that goes all the way to 5x I think. However, I'm getting the best macro results I've ever had with my RF 100 f/2.8 1.4x macro lens so I may just stick with it alone. I'm pretty sure I'll sell my Tokina 100mm Macro and maybe even
my Nikon 105 2.8 macro both of which are 1:1.
Thanks Phil, very kind of you. I think the RF 100mm is a killer and has plenty of magnification for most scenarios and optically pretty much the best. The 85mm is tiny and its image auality looks pretty decent, but not sure how much value you’d get out of it for a little extra magnification. Cheers
I have both the 25mm and the 85mm. I find the 85mm a lot easier to use out in the field. The 25mm is great on a rail with a stationary subject.

Hello, Peter, and thanks again for sharing your amazing videos with us. Let me ask you something, If I have a crop sensor (Canon90D)with a Laowa 25mm it becomes 40mm, and I'll have a little more distance from the objective right? Thanks again 😊
Hi here, thanks a lot. The working distance or MFD is not affected whether you use a crop sensor or FF with a given lens, only the field of view changes , the optical magnification ratio remains the same as well. When you use a crop sensor only the apparent magnification increases due to the fact that the image is cropped. Cheers.
@@peterviragphotothanks so much! I have read somewhere to get 1:1 with the APs-C body, you will need to be further back than the full frame to achieve the same image at 1:1. I know the magnification ratio remains the same. It is kind of a confusing topic 🤔 ..but I think I got it. Thanks Mr.Peter 😊
Good job. It is hard to keep your camera from moving closer or father away once you set your focus. People don't understand how important lenses be equipped with an aperture control motor and CPU chip. The Laowa 100mm 2:1 has this for Canon EF. The aperture is wide open so you can see your subject and focus (especially helpful for MF) then closes down to F8 or 16 or whatever setting you have when you go to shoot your image. There are so many other things you have to worry about.. distance to subject, subject movement, focus, exposure, then have to worry about seeing through a lens at F8 and trying to focus. Personally I will never buy a MF macro lens or one that does not have aperture control ever again to go out into the field with. For studio, it is a lot easier but going outside on location, just not going to happen. Canon or Sigma need to release a 100-180mm 2:1 2.8 AF macro lens
Thanks mate. Yes, aperture coupling of the EF version of the 100mm is very useful. If the ambient light is strong then it’s much easier to use the Laowa25mm in the field but as you mentioned a gazillion factors make it quite challenging. Assist lights would be great but they also get in the way sometimes, lighting can be a pain in the proverbial! I’d love to try out the 180mm macro from Canon one day as well, that’d be fun. Cheers
It's not so bad with mirrorless lenses as the viewfinder will just be as bright as you need it even when stopped down.
@@MichelleCox Sure but if it is stopped down alot like when doing astro photography, it because very noisy and hard to see focus. But for macro, I agree, it is ok but having the aperture coupling is better especially when you stack the lens, a teleconverter and a Raynox magnifier.
@@IAmR1ch Better, yeah, but it also makes them bigger and more expensive. I can live without it for macro because the R6's viewfinder shows it just fine even stopped down. I wouldn't mind AF if I didn't need to sacrifice lightness and cheapness because in camera focus bracketing is sweet but that would be a bonus.
@@MichelleCox You can get a used canon 100mm 2.8 USM macro for 269 at B&H right now. It is sharper than the L model and the RF which suffers from backfocus according to" the digital picture" site. To me 25mm is too short a working distance for outside. If I were working in the studio, it is not as big a problem. My R5 has such great AF that I use it all the time so I can run and gun. But each person has different needs. I personally would like the 100mm Laowa, but not having AF is a no go for me.
